The monograph describes the embryonic development of the arteries of a primitive mammal, the tree-shrew Tupaia belangeri, explains the variability among other mammals on the basis of a common developmental pattern, and establishes reliable criteria for the comparison of data published in the literature. Some abnormalities of the arterial system of adult individuals can be interpreted as retentions of a state that normally occurs only during early embryology. Since, for example, the teratogen thalidomide primarily affects the anlagen of the blood vessels and only secondarily the development of the complete limb, it is impossible to understand the normal development of limbs as as well as limb malformations without considering the morphogenesis of their blood vessels.

The previous reviewer, Mr. Gurgel, beat me to the punch. This is the type of guide to NYC that I will be giving to out-of-town friends as well. And for just about the same reasons.
As a lifelong student of New York City's history, I've always been intrigued by what these guidebooks say about my town's history and present attractions. Some have been dismal. One made mention that Houston Street was named after the Texan, Sam Houston. WRONG! Another had Times Square still listed as a "dangerous place--a must to avoid", as late as 1999, four years after the area had been totally rehabilitated and became the No. 1 tourist attraction in town.
Editor Martha Ellen Zenfell has done a fine job of keeping the city's history straight, and keeping its current tourist (and not so tourist) spots up to date. I recommend that you recommend this book to anyone who has just moved to or is visiting the greatest city in the world.
Handy Simple Guidebook, Good For NYC Newbies.......2003-07-31
I bought twenty-five of these and gave them out to twenty-five out-of-town (Midwest) couples that I hosted for a bus tour of NYC on the day after my daughter's wedding. I wanted something nicely printed and not too expensive with good photos that would serve to help my guests remember their day in the City. There were lots of choices on the shelves of .... , where I made my selection before ordering from Amazon. This book seemed to fit my needs best. Insight publishes a larger version of this same guide; and I had that in my pocket as I played tour guide.

The guide is interesting and compact, with a lot of information, but it is not always easy to retrieve it. It is somehow dispersed in different chapters and sometimes you come across what you look for only by chance.
The map is very useful and good quality (plastified) to be carried along without damaging it too quickly.

Whether you already know how to do ribbon embroidery or not, this book is for you. The books starts with the basics from choosing fabrics to setting up your sewing machine to do ribbon embroidery. This is followed by step-by-step, easily understandable instructions on how to do the various stiches. From there, you are shown how to join those stiches to make everything from flowers to bugs and birds and monograms. It finishes with a number of projects that showcase the techniques shown in the book. Best yet, there are brilliant colored photographs throughout the book to show you how ribbon embroidery can be used in any number of ways. They even feature a section on using ribbon embroidery to embellish crazy quilts. I found this book not only helpful, but very inspiring.

This book takes a difficult time consuming art form and makes it seem simple. You can achieve the same delicate look of hand embroidered silk flowers much more quickly and easily using any sewing machine. The step by step instructions are supplemented with color photographs of the author performing each step. This book is excellent for the beginning sewer as well as the most advanced.

This book is easier to follow than other books on silk ribbon embroidery by machine. The drawings are clear and the projects are nice. I enjoyed using the silk ribbon on the bobbin for reverse work - and it's not hard! Pretty photos help a lot.

Very Good Reference Material.......2006-12-04
I'm a landscape contractor and have a lot of material available to me and have somewhat of a small library of encyclopedias, reference how-to books, etc. Ordered this book not knowing if I would get just another repeat of what I already have. This is one book I will return to quite often. Towards the front of the book will outline how the book works. The index in back is alphabetized with Latin nomenclature. Some common names are included too. If you want to look up Maples, you will find it under Maple, but will refer you to Acer and page #. Each genus entry gives you some info about the species over all and some 'cultivation'. Then gives you more specifics about each species/ variety alphabetically. First the Latin name then common name. Then includes range, size of the tree or shrub, characteristics, subspecies info, and zone tolerance ranges. There are a lot of very good photos that accompany each entry as well. Now, this is not 'Complete' in that it lists every tree/ shrub out there. That's unrealistic in any volume. But it is a very outstanding and 'Complete' in what it does cover - and it covers alot. I would recommend this encyclopedia be included in your library of reference material.

i have found this bood to be an excellent resource for all types of trees and shrubs. it has both common and scientific plant names and is loaded with pictures and comprehensive descriptions. the cultivation tips have been very useful and i would highly recommend this book to anyone!

The book has great pictures and covers any plant you could ever think of but is lacking in its content. Do the math, 8,500 trees and shrubs covered in 815 pages. That does not leave much room for a complete description. It is a very attractive book to look at, but is not for the serious landscaper or nurserymen.
