Customer Reviews:
It's worth it.......2006-01-30
We were new to Tucson and have found this book invaluable. It covers most everything a new resident needs to know. With this book and a good map (you'll need one) you will have a good start in this city. Most information you will need is here. The rest filters in through the newspaper, Tucson websites, and the radio. I highly recommend this book if you plan to relocate to Tucson.
Tucson for the visitor .......2005-09-09
I was looking for a book that would tell me inside information about restaurants, shopping, art galleries, bicycle trails and side trips for our month long visit next winter. This book dealt with all of those subjects and some extraneous subjects I was not interested in. The chapters were well defined, so finding a particular subject was easy. I would recommend this book to visitors as well as those moving to Tucson.
moving to Tucson.......2001-12-17
I searched all over for a book on Tucson, and this was the best one my bookstore had to offer. I am excited to see all that the city has to offer, but I wish that this book or any book on Tucson at all, had more about people who are moving to the area and have no idea what to make of the different neighborhoods. They offer brief descriptions, but I would have liked to know more.
Just what it says: Insider's Guide to Tucson.......2001-08-03
I was moving to Tucson and I had never even been there. I looked through the book to get a feel for the city. After visiting and making the decision to move, I tried many of the activities and resturants in the book. I found all the reviews were accurate. When I asked 'locals' about different things about Tucson, they quite often said just what the book said. I even carry this book in my vehicle as I refer to it quite a bit. If you planning to move to Tucson, this is a must have. The small price of the book goes a long way in learning about all that Tucson has to offer.
Very informative, it's good to get a view from the inside.......1999-09-29
I enjoyed The Insiders Guide to Tucson since I will be moving with my family very soon to the area. I've been in Tucson a number of times so can be a little objective about the reporting and I must admit that it is a bit partisan, but then it wouldn't be an insiders guide if it wasn't. It demonstrates the wide variety of services available in Tucson and even without fancy colour photos makes the city sound attractive. I must admit that the comparisons on the restaurants are fairly exaggerated and it would be difficult to name any as remotely world class, but apart from that I thought the book was a super reference.

Book Description
Providing students with a thought-provoking account of America’s past, The American People examines how American society assumed its present shape and developed its present forms of government.
Emphasizing the interaction of ordinary Americans with extraordinary events, the text combines the discussion of political events with analysis of their impact on social and economic life. The comprehensive narrative encompasses description of the lives and experiences of Americans of all national origins and cultural backgrounds, at all class levels of society, and in all regions of the country. The thoughtful analysis seeks the connections among the political, social, economic, technological, and cultural factors that have shaped and reshaped American society over four centuries.

An important alternative approach to teaching U.S. history.......2006-10-27
I have been teaching U.S. history at a few colleges and universities in Chicago and its suburbs for the past five years. This is the textbook that I have invariably assigned in the time; in fact, as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the late nineties, it was the text that my mentor used in the U.S. survey class in which I apprenticed for her. I have found that my students are generally enthusiastic about this textbook's focus on "ordinary" Americans, like themselves, who, as the book reminds them, make the history of our nation, as the elites have always done, usually by going about their daily lives. Thus, Nash/Jeffrey, et al, examine the effects of some critical historical developments (such as the American Revolution; the emergence of the Market Economy during the Early Republic; the long-running intersectional coflicts over the continued existence of and the often-advocated extension of American black slavery; and, the significant role played by the self-made, visionary President Abraham Lincoln in managing the Union's ultimate victory in the U.S. Civil War) on the average Americans who participated in them. Moreover, the authors attempt to show that non-elite Americans have often actively shaped their own destinies, and not just passively allowed the powers-that-be to manipulate them (think: the Regulator Movement of North Carolina's Backcountry in 1766; the Whiskey Rebellion and Shay's Rebellion after the Revolution, both waged by average Americans out to safeguard their independence from what they perceived as governmentally-perpetrated tyranny; the manner in which many Americans, as a result of the First Great Awakening, just threw out their tradition of submission and deference to their alleged "betters"; and, the way that ordinary white laborers and farmers voted with their feet, and set out over the Appalachians in the 1780s and on to both find land and to get away from their landlords, creditors and employers in the eastern states). This particular text's unique perspective reinforces my own claim, always made to the students at our very first class-meeting each semster, that the history of the U.S. is not simply a record of the so-called illustrious achievements of elite Americans (people to whom many students have trouble relating, let alone caring much about) that must be memorized, rather, that it is also, truthfully, the collective story of all of our families.

So You Thought You Knew Your History.......2006-02-25
This is one of the better college texts for American history. The information is straight forward compared to the full text version, and no information is missed between its big brother. The second half highlights from 1865 onward into the 21st century. I would highly reccomend this book for students taking a introductory course in college or AP American History in high school.
Great Overview!.......2005-09-27
This book gives a great overview of the social aspects of U.S. History since 1865. It was rather refreshing to read a history book that was not so narrowly focused on the death and carnage of war in this nation. The wars are discussed, of course, in relative detail, but more weight is placed on how they affected our nation's citizens and society as a whole. The photographs and illustrations were fantastic in revealing how life truly was at a time we often have a hard time imagining, let alone comprehending these days. In addition, I found it really helpful in learning the information and doing well on my exams!
Worst History Book Of All.......2005-09-06
This has got to be the worst and boring history book of all. Throughout my entire years in school reading history book this has to be the worst. It gets so boring you can't even read it if you try. If you did read it, chances are you did not understand them 10 pages. Combining with a horrible professor and book it's going to be one long semester for me.
very left wing bias.......2004-06-04
dont waste your time with this guy. I don't know where he gets his info. My son has one of Mr. Nash's textbooks for history and I have never seen so much left wing bias, especially in a textbook.
Do your own research.......2004-01-09
It's amazing to me to read reviews of people who tout this book as "liberal propaganda" when it merely tells the truth about history. If you wanted the whitewashed version of history we were taught in high school, where Christopher Columbus had pure motives in the new world and didn't rape or enslave the native population, where the Native Americans were savages who were domesticated by the pilgrims who so graciously shared a Thanksgiving feast with them, where Woodrow Wilson's racism and hatred of women isn't mentioned...why did you bother taking a college history course, or bother going to college for that matter, at all? Pull your heads out of the sand! If you truly believe this book is socialist propaganda, I recommend you start doing your own research of America's past without using any high school or college textbook as a source of information - you'll find that this particular textbook has one of the truest pictures of American history available.

A fascinating survey of how to do or make almost anything. Beautuful illustrations. Nothing like it.
The High Tech Guide to 17th Century Europe and America........2000-05-07
This book presents in fantastic plates an insite into the technology available to 17th Century France. This is also the technology enjoyed by the early settlers of North America and Australia.
The art work in the book in gripping. I first saw this book in a library and rushed to buy it. Aside from its beauty, the book is very practical. I know that with a copy of this book, some clay, lumber and a timber saw, I will soon be casting bells and cannons, making my own blast furnace and maybe even a bronze statue.
This book helps you realise just how much effort was involved in producing many of the every day things we enjoy.
I gave a copy of this book to my dad who loves it.
A must have for when the "Big One" drops.

Contrary to what you may have heard, Polly does not want a cracker. But she'll appreciate some sunflowers seeds! The Ultimate Parrot is a lovely and informative guide to all topics related to these exotic animals. Folks considering their first parrot will benefit greatly from a thorough reading before they purchase their feathered friend--this book pulls no punches on just how time-consuming parrot parenting can be. Those already living happily with a parrot can learn from the detailed chapters on proper diet, training, health care, and breeding practices. The text is clear and easily absorbed and goes into extensive detail whenever possible. Need tips on zinc poisoning or hand-rearing chicks? Worried that your bird isn't in peak condition? Looking to prevent bites from your new cockatiel? For those in search of such specific answers, the table of contents lists every smaller topic included in each chapter, so it's easy to find the right page even without an index. Gorgeous pictures are sprinkled throughout the book, and some not-so-gorgeous but useful photos are included of various diseases and stress-related conditions that can affect these birds. The breed directory is especially helpful to folks looking for their first bird--like any purebred pet, each breed has specific needs for space and attention that should not be ignored. Editor Barrett Watson pays great attention to these needs and includes important information on conservation plans and trusts to help keep these lovely creatures from becoming extinct. --Jill Lightner

Gorgeous Photos, Decent Text for Parrot Lovers.......2003-08-18
This book is published in the UK and has the typical UK focus on aviaries and breeding in aviary settings. These chapters will probably not interest the typical US parrot owner who has a pet parrot or two and is uninterested in breeding. The book has a large chapter on various "breeds" of parrots. I suppose that in the UK one refers to parrot breeds. In the US, however, you would be severely criticized for this. Parrots consist of different species, not breeds. The different parrots available are unrelated species with different scientific names. Cats and dogs, on the other hand, are the same exact species but are considered to have breeds to designate different varieties and traits humans have selectively bred. I just want to clarify this point so that a person new to the world of parrots is not labeled an ignoramus! The species descriptions are very brief and often limited to breeding habits or distribution in the wild. Most species descriptions are not accompanied by a photo, either. If one is looking for a parrot identifier with photos and lots of descriptive narrative, you'd be best to look elsewhere. However, the book has lots of gorgeous photos throughout and the chapter on parrot anatomy is quite good. Considering the steep discount, this book is overall not a bad purchase for parrot lovers.

Combining typographic scholarship and literary criticism, Alastair Johnston presents and discusses hundreds of examples of texts that show the founders' interests and preoccupations, from the arcane to the mundane. Running Away From Secrets.......2003-01-28
Ronda is a young woman with a lot of secrets, who is trying to get beyond her past and develop a closer relationship with God. However, her relationship with God seems to get repeatedly put on hold because of her need to have a relationship with a man at whatever cost. As a result, she has had several unhealthy relationships that add additional weight to the trunk of secrets she carries around with her. But most of us know that all secrets eventually become exposed and so as you read Why I Kept My Past a Secret you may find yourself wondering if Ronda and her fragile relationships can handle such exposure.
This book was an interesting read that shows how you may be haunted later, when you try to bury the past without dealing with it. I felt at times the story could have been sequenced better and there were certain aspects of the story that could have been explored in greater detail. Still, the author did a good job at helping you understand the turmoil that Ronda experienced, and the overall concept of the book was good. While this book may leave you wanting more, it is still a quick and compelling read.

Unspeakable Reality.......2002-03-28
Oh my God...I did not know all this could happen to one woman and she still remains "sane"...but with God in your life we can do all things...I felt what Rhonda went through, and wanted to cry, laugh, shout, and all the emotions that came with her. Knowing the author, I never knew things could happen like that. I am so proud of you Teresa!!! I love you and keep up the good work. ...
From a supportive husband.......2002-02-10
This book is very enlightening. Why? Well, A lot of men really don't have a clue to some of the things that there women have been through, which cause them not to be able to understand them at times. Women seem to hide those deep secrets which causes an major impact on their individual character. Why I Kept My Past a Secret helps you not to competely understand a woman, but it helps you to understand some of the everyday struggles that accure in the lives of not only black women, but all women. Which makes this book enlightening to men, because the more men can learn about the emotions of women, the more we can be better Kings to our QUEENS!!! I suggest all men to read this book, and for those women that have men that are not into reading, read it to them!
Thank You!!
4 Stars!.......2002-02-10
Great first book for Ms Browning.
Her characters really come alive.
I think, I may have grown up with a few of them.
I highly recommend this book.
A must read........2002-01-24
I read this book in a day and a half, once I started I could not put it down. This book is a true example of the old saying, "you never miss what you have until it's gone." Ryan thought that he could speak to Ronda in a negative manner and she would accept it, I am glad Ronda realized she deserved better. The author did an excellent job of explaining why Ronda did the things she did as a mother first and a woman second. A lot of women would say I wouldn't take that off of him but you can never say what you would or wouldn't do, until you are in the situation. I was glad that Ronda was strong enough to leave Ryan and not go back. I am looking forward to a sequel. Ronda was indeed a srong woman.
