5 out of 5 stars Incredible pictures, diary format limits usefulness a bit........1997-10-13

Hugh Miles describes his two years filming wild river otters on the Scottish coast. The photography which illustrates this book must be seen to be believed, and captures the northern Scottish terrain as well as the otters who are the subject of the book. The text of the book is truly an equal to the pictures in both detail and feel, although the format of the book as a diary of his years there does make for occasional very slow passages, and limits the utility of the book as a reference on otter behavior. All the information on otter behavior an amateur naturalist could need can be found in this book, but not easily. However, the pictures, accuracy, mood and detail of the book more than make up for this, and it is so engaging that an interested reader probably will become completely absorbed in it. After I checked this one out of the library I kept renewing it until the copy I ordered finally arrived in the mail; I couldn't stand to part with it.

5 out of 5 stars Make your Day!.......2007-05-11

The unofficial guide to Walt Disney World with Kids.

This guidebook is full of information, funny in tone yet a real tool for anyone who understands that planning is the most essential step when preparing to travel. When I started to read The unofficial guide to Walt Disney World with Kids, I felt overwhelmed by the density of the information because it was not immediately clear how to approach it. Clearly I was not going to read every single word. After all it IS a guide book. But to determine its value as a guide book meant not only that it be well researched and relatively timely; but also that its content be accessible for the enjoyment of a wide cross section of prospective readers who travel with kids--grandparents, single parents, blended families.

Notwithstanding fluctuations in Disney prices which could affect the accuracy of fees mentioned, the essential information compiled by the authors can withstand the test of time. They have done all the research and walked at least a mile in the reader's shoes: compiled websites, identified pertinent telephone numbers, reviewed budget, weighed housing options inside and outside DW, and considered babysitting options. They have even included a selection of dining options with commentary prepared by travelers others than the authors. All this while holding the reader's hand on a visit to each of the theme parks. Each park and even the characters inside the park are discussed with clip out touring plans included. I especially liked the discussion of age appropriateness as it relates to attractions, a concern for mixed age groups.

There's more than enough information for a huge variety of people to wrap their heads around. And not just those traveling with kids. I thought the funny images of Liliane, juxtaposed with Bob on a bicycle and the input from the teen (Idan) and tween (Ian) make this a book that all ages can use to prepare for a trip to Disney World. I mean, really, what`s not to like?

    5 out of 5 stars Moe than a travel book - a fun read.......2007-05-05

I have never had any desire to visit Disney World, until I read this book. In addition to the many choices you have for hotels and dining, I particularly found the "tips" to be very useful. As far as the prices - I never rely on published books: it has been my experience that prices are hardly ever the same no matter how "fresh" the book.
What I particularly liked about this book was the fact that you can engage a child to read through it with you, as you plan your trip. They can read the passages written by the kids in the book. This is a fun way to get your kids involved in planning the trip.
A great read even if you don't go to Disney World. Travel books should not be a step-by-step guide to what you should do on vacation. One should explore and decide what is appropriate on one's own. A travel book should be entertaining and kindle the desire to visit a place. This is just that kind of book!

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-01

I've used versions of this book every year for the past 5 years and it has proved invaluable. I have always found their information up to date and if it isn't it's because Disney is constantly changing their rules/hours/number of days to call in advance for reservations etc., etc., etc. It has definitely helped me find the best hotels, restaurants and things like tips on where to sit for parades and what time to get there (and if you've ever been to a parade at Disney, you know just how rough it can get).
As far as ride reviews, all kids are different as to how they react to rides. They also have a website you can subscribe to to get up to the minute info and it's cheaper than many other similar sites. As far as who writes the book, one review was so off base. They have many researchers, former Disney employees, they solicit opinions from the public. It is not just one woman and 2 kids as suggested, which of course would be ridiculous. I mean what publisher would put out a book like that?
Bottom line, a great book I've used for years and you can't beat the price.

    2 out of 5 stars Unreliable.......2007-04-25

Very thin about attractions, shows or other things of interest to kids and parents. More of a book about parenting methods and the authors thoughts about whether or not your family should go to Disney. According to its Introduction it's written by a woman who lives in New York City with opinions from a 16-year-old boy in New York, a 12-year-old boy from Tampa and a 8-year-old in North Carolina. Why these people would be qualified to write a book about Disney World it doesn't say. At first glance there seems to be good information in here, but whenever I knew about a particular thing I noticed this book doesn't know what it's talking about. For example, though my copy is the 5th edition, published 2007, I learned the hard way that the ticket prices quoted for the Cirque du Soliel show are two years out of date. Also the book says the resorts within walking distance of Epcot are "a long way away." We stayed at the Beach Club. It's right next door! Big parts of this book are simply lifted from the regular Unofficial Guide, The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2007 (Unofficial Guides).

A more reliable kid-focused book is Birnbaum's Walt Disney World for Kids, by Kids 2007 (Birnbaum's Walt Disney World for Kids By Kids).

A better book about Disney World is The Complete Guide to Walt Disney World.

1 out of 5 stars Outdated, too many parenting tips, not enough park tips.......2007-03-29

I tried to read this book, but ended up returning it... I couldn't find a lot of good Disney information. It read more like a "Tips on Parenting your Child" rather than a "How to Enjoy Disney World with Kids" kind of book. In particular, the information about Cinderella's Royal Table is very outdated. They now open reservations 180 days before your scheduled visit (the book says 90) and the only open a percentage of them them. A large percentage, granted, but they hold some tables which they gradually release over time. It's no longer a Mad Telephone Dash at 7AM EST and several prayers to your chosen diety to get a table on your chosen day. This bad information was the last straw, and why I returned the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent traveling companion.......2007-08-28

We used this book on our trip to Florida this August and was a great buy. It is not a book that lists ALL there is in Florida, but what is BEST to see if you travel with kids. It gives insights that are a rarity in books of this type and it proved good both for things to do and for restaurants that pleased both kids and adults (from diner to real restaurants). We spared a lot of time and, consequentially, money.
We used it together with a traditional guide book for reference, but we learned to trust the 'Unofficial' advice better.

2 out of 5 stars Take Pam's advice with a grain of salt!.......2002-04-22

The book provides a very thorough representation of what there is to do in Florida with children, but I found a couple of things with which I take issue. First, on page 176, Brandon's advice for Waiting Line Strategies for Theme Parks suggests to use "elevator shoes for the short and the brave." Maybe Brandon doesn't understand that the height restrictions for theme park rides is for the protection and safety of kids and small adults, and legal liability of the theme parks! Getting your kids to stand up straighter, or putting heel lifts in their shoes (Brandon's advice) just so they will be permitted to ride an attraction is pretty lame, not to mention dangerous.

In addition, I was shocked to visit St. Augustine Beach and see cars driving on the beach. I thought I had thoroughly read the St. Augustine chapter of the book. Guess not. The only mention of cars on the beach is on page 78, listed under Northeast Florida's Best Beaches, NOT in the St. Augustine chapter. I was very disappointed and felt that the driving on the beach is a hazard for young families, and is obviously downplayed both in this book and by the proprietors of beachside motels (particularly the author-recommended LaFiesta Oceanside Inn). All in all, a disappointing book which I feel I can't trust for further Florida adventures with my children.

5 out of 5 stars First Hand Family Trip Report - We Got To Pet Dolphins!.......2001-02-27

After our family's great success with The Unofficial Guide to Disney World, we eagerly snapped up The Unofficial Guide to Florida With Kids when the 2nd Edition was published in January, 2001. What a terrific book!

We decided to take a weekend trip to St. Augustine, FL this past Wednesday, and left after work on Friday. With very little time to plan, I dug out this book and quickly flipped to the chapter dedicated to St. Augustine. There, the author gives a quick and interesting history of the city, as well as a map with recommended family resorts, attractions, and restaurants clearly marked. This section is followed by impartial reviews of each.

The family resorts section goes over a number of cozy historical hand-picked bed & breakfasts and inns, with an eye towards children. It is very helpful in telling you what aged children are welcome, whether breakfast (and what type) is included, accurate rates, distance to nearby attractions, etc.

The restaurant section focuses on dependable family-friendly local restaurants. This list is a godsend when you cannot stand the sight of another fast food restaurant, yet are afraid to try anything else.

The place where this book really shines, however, is in the attractions section. Here the author and actual readers list and rate each attraction's appeal by age group! This feature is extremely handy in trying to sort through Florida's myriad of attractions with limited time on your hands and with an even smaller budget! We really liked the fact that the author points out lesser-known and less crowded attractions that are often overlooked by unprepared families.

For instance, although we normally would never have stopped at anything called the St. Augustine Alligator Farm (I still grin at the name :)), we took the advice of the book and gave it a chance. It turned out to be terrific, one of my 3 1/2 year old's favorite parts of the trip! Another attraction that we would have certainly overlooked was Marineland, listed at the end of the chapter under side trips. Normally we wouldn't have given the park a second look, but we followed the book anyway and spent a fantastic Sunday afternoon there. Much smaller crowds meant that we got great seats at all of the shows, and we also got to spend a good bit of time talking with the animal trainers. My daughter even got to pet, feed, help train, and have her picture taken with a live dolphin! She was ecstatic, and I quietly whispered a thank you to author Pam Brandon for sending us here instead of the ultra-crowded Sea World where we could never have gotten that much time so close to the animals.

I overrode the book's warnings about taking a preschooler to the Ripley's Believe It Or Not museum (rated in the book as 1 star out of 5 for that age group, although higher for older kids and adults). Sure enough, Ripley's was way too scary for my daughter, and I regretted not listening to the author's good advice. We could have saved $20 right there - more than I paid for the book!

The Unofficial Guide to Florida With Kids saved us so much time and money in one weekend that it has already more than paid for itself. We are currently pouring through our copy working on our next trip. We spend a lot of time and effort on our family vacations, and we want to get our money's worth. We won't go back to Florida without this book. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars What a book!.......1999-05-04

I live in Central Florida, so I can say first-hand what an amazing book this really is. It has so many fabulous ideas and great vacation strategies. As a mother of 5, I know how hard it it to plan a well-rounded vacation. This book gives an outstanding variety of suggestions on places to go for kids ages 1 to 100! Give this book a read if you're going to Florida--you'll have the best vacation possible.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must-have book for traveling to Florida with kids!.......1999-04-08

Ms. Brandon takes the guesswork out of vacationing in Florida, with her common sense approach to this book. Information is organized in a user-friendly fashion that makes it easy and fun to include the whole family in the planning process! Her vast knowledge of the subject matter is apparent; she has given clear and concise descriptions of specific attractions throughout Florida, from a perspective rich with personal experience and humor. Indeed, it is an enjoyable book to read, even if a trip to Florida is not on the horizon!

Like lots of people, I bought this book when my Number One Cat Elvis was dying of kidney disease. In addition to feeling the sadness of other people's experiences, I also was able to do a few things just to make Elvis' life even better his last few days and minutes--I brought a towel from home and had him lay on it.

The book also helped me deal with Elvis' afterlife, just remembering and writing freely about the little details of our relationship. We all mourn in different ways, and it's important that writings on the human-animal bond do include the human part.

One of the unique things about Poynter's THE OLDER CAT is it's written in a relaxed and personal style, and has short sections, different fonts--something that will allure the cyber generation.

I am completely unimpressed by this book. It doesn't provide enough information, gives too many anecdotes, and will not help. Look somewhere else for a better book on this subject.

5 out of 5 stars A Valuable Reference for Cat Owners.......2001-07-23

This is an excellent book dealing exclusively with older cats. It is informative, easy to read, and surprisingly upbeat considering the issues it covers. The book has an extensive appendix with valuable resources for more information on dealing with older cat issues.

The book has useful information covering health, extending life, nutrition, and dealing with final decisions and grief in a straightforward manner. The book has stories about older cat solutions from various cat owners that make the book fun, and have helpful hints as well.

There is no easy way to make a decision about your older cat's fate when he or she gets sick or has age-related problems. This book has the courage to deal with these issues, including the matter of deciding when or if to use euthanasia to ease your cat's suffering. Again, stories from other people make the read easier, and come up with alternatives. Death is a taboo subject in our society, but this book has the courage to deal with it.

The book covers some diseases and the signs that your cat may be ill, injured, or in declining health because of age. It deals with the decisions whether to give care or to end your cat's suffering. It helps to make the choices, and again reading other people's choices can make your decision easier.

Cats are valuable additions to their owners' lives and I deserve whatever help we can give when they reach old age. This book can help you do the right thing for your pet. I recommend this book to anyone with an older cat. It is a valuable reference for the cat owner's library.

                  5 out of 5 stars A five mouse rating.......2001-07-18

While I haven't had any cats or other pets for a couple of decades, I was fascinated by the Aging Cat-which just goes to show that anything done really well is interesting. Dan Poynter wants to make sure that cats get all nine of their lives. The Older Cat is a cat lover's manual on being the best cat lover and guardian possible. It is about how to be Florence Nightingale to your cat when she is ill. And it is about how to make the difficult decisions about when and how to let go when your cat is dying. As a longevity expert, I was struck with Dan Poynter's data on how, just like humans, cats are living a lot longer. The Older Cat is a comprehensive book on cat care that includes nutrition at different ages, illnesses, warning signs, and working with veterinarians. It is unique in focusing on the issues of aging cats and dealing with their eventual decline and death. Mr. Poynter walks the reader through and holds the reader's hand in giving cats loving care and in making tough decisions. As a psychologist I am particularly struck with how readers will feel they are not alone in making tough decisions, but part of a brotherhood of cat lovers. The Older Cat was striking in how technology is changing cat care. Mr. Poynter recommend getting your vet's E-mail address so you can update the vet on changes in a sick cat's health status. The appendix not only contains information about many books, magazines, cat insurance, support groups, and other resources, it is full of web site addresses and even chat room information. I highly recommend it to all cat lovers-it gets a five mouse rating...

                  5 out of 5 stars Extending Life--Dealing with Death.......2001-07-14

This book will help you discover how to determine the real age of your cat, recognize the early signs of decline, slow the aging process, and extend your cat's life. And when your cat nears death, this book will explain your choices. It will help you decide if you should put your cat to sleep, how to minimize the loss to your family and other pets, the grieving process, and your choices regarding burial and memorializing your cat. The Appendix contains many helpful resources.

Cats are living longer than ever, an average of 16 years, due to our increased knowledge of nutrition and improvements in medicine. Sooner or later, every cat will die, but you can help improve both his/her quality and quantity of life.

Highly recommended to anyone with a cat who is more than 10 years old. Protect your cat now! Get this book BEFORE you need it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Collectors of Kitchen Items..........2000-05-06

This book is the kind that "hooks" collectors. Having recently purchased most of the kitchen collectible books readily available on the market, I was pleasantly surprised at the scope of this book and the excellent photography, along with pricing guidelines. While this book does not offer specific dating of items, an introduction suffices to lead you elsewhere for extensive research, gives you enough of a broad overview to get you started, and provides insight into the very real difficulties of accurate dating. Given the wide range of items I haven't found elsewhere, I was happy to accept what it had to offer: photos and information about everything from aluminum bowls to wire whips, from the 1920's to the 1950's. This book proves you don't have to aspire to owning a $150 Griswold cast iron pot from the 1800's to love old kitchen equipment and all that it represents!

3 out of 5 stars Great if you like potato mashers.......2000-03-30

This book has great color photos, but I found it to be less than "complete" as the title implies -- UNLESS you are collecting potato mashers! Page after page after page of potato mashers. It tries to cover too many areas and leaves me unsatisfied in most of them. And frankly, general types of potato mashers have the relatively same value -- I could have used more cake tins, crock bowls, etc. and many fewer mashers, it seemed like enormous overkill.

This book is a great reference! However the are some caveats... it has been awhile since it was last published... lighting gasoline in a trench or pouring creosote in the trench for control of armyworms is effective but not recommended (nor good for the environment), but at least she gives other options for control than to spray every caterpillar with Bt as so many other organic gardening books do. I love her recommendations using a molases/bran slurry. Control measures like those can be effective and for the most part have been lost. The pictures are so very helpful, too. She has the egg, immature and adult stage for almost every pest she lists. Very good reference.

                        Book Description

When early Christians began to study the Bible, and to write their own history and that of the Jews whom they claimed to supersede, they used scholarly methods invented by the librarians and literary critics of Hellenistic Alexandria. But Origen and Eusebius, two scholars of late Roman Caesarea, did far more. Both produced new kinds of books, in which parallel columns made possible critical comparisons previously unenvisioned, whether between biblical texts or between national histories. Eusebius went even farther, creating new research tools, new forms of history and polemic, and a new kind of library to support both research and book production.

Christianity and the Transformation of the Book combines broad-gauged synthesis and close textual analysis to reconstruct the kinds of books and the ways of organizing scholarly inquiry and collaboration among the Christians of Caesarea, on the coast of Roman Palestine. The book explores the dialectical relationship between intellectual history and the history of the book, even as it expands our understanding of early Christian scholarship. Christianity and the Transformation of the Book attends to the social, religious, intellectual, and institutional contexts within which Origen and Eusebius worked, as well as the details of their scholarly practices--practices that, the authors argue, continued to define major sectors of Christian learning for almost two millennia and are, in many ways, still with us today.

4 out of 5 stars ". . . we are still the heirs of Origen and Eusebius".......2007-10-02

There is much to like about this book. While a few assertions and historical models are certainly debatable, Grafton and Williams have authored a fascinating account of the origin of rigorous western scholarship. Among the giants of philological erudition and text collection, preservation, translation and analysis, Origen was a titan of the titans. His Hexapala "was one of the greatest single moments of Roman scholarship," and he has cast a very long shadow in which we stand today. Of course, he didn't live and work in an intellectual vacuum, as the authors demonstrate at some length. The following excerpts will lend some small sense of their book:

". . . the scholars of Christian Caesarea lived in a time of seismic cultural change, a time when one regime of book production and storage supplanted another . . . they were themselves impresarios of the scriptorium and the library, and developed new forms of scholarship that depended on their abilities to collect and produce new kinds of books . . . they struggled to devise texts that could impose order on highly varied forms of information. . .
". . . Christian scholars used written materials--both those they inherited from others, and those they created themselves--in ways that drew upon classical precedents, but they also developed these in new directions. They made their technical mastery of the production of complex books the basis of new kinds of intellectual authority, which in turn shaped new modes of scholarly inquiry. . . We in the modern university owe a great debt to this particular strand of the Christian intellectual tradition."

                          Book Description

This volume reconstructs the contents of the library in Roman Palestine of Eusebius of Caesarea (ca. 265-339) by examining Eusebius' major works, the Ecclesiastical History, Chronicon,Preparation for the Gospel, and Life of Constantine. After surveying the history of the library from its origins as an ecclesiastical archive and its true foundation by Origen of Alexandria to its disappearance in the seventh century, it discusses how Eusebius used his sources and then examines what specific works were available in the library in chapters devoted to philosophical works, poetry and rhetoric, histories, Jewish and Christian works, and contemporary documents. The book ends with a useful list of the contents of the library.

This is a tale of two young boys, one caucasion and one African-American, who were unlikely friends in North Carolina farmland in the late 40's and early 50's. The bond created between these two boys was strong enough to carry on to their high school years when they encountered the trials and tribulations of a newly integrated school. Together they were able to overcome these hardships and continue a relationship through adulthood, keeping in contact and sharing experiences as each man fought his own life threatening disease. This story is an inspiration and an education for all.
