Finally, a comprehensive guide covering the entire span of Jamaican music, from the 1950s mento and R&B through dub, dancehall and ragga. Along with interviews of crucial reggae personalities (Bunny Lee, King Jammy, and Coxsone Dodd, for example) and profiles of major careers (like Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott, and of course, Bob Marley), Barrow and Dalton provide the irreplaceable service of reviewing and recommending more than 1,000 CD and vinyl selections. The writers clearly love their topic and are exceedingly knowledgeable about it. The resulting guide is a combination of fascinating historical tidbits, scholarly attention to musical detail, and a definitive treatment of reggae's genre, artists, albums, and songs. --Stephanie Gold

Book Description

The Rough Guide to Reggae is the only book of its kind available. The first two editions of the Rough Guide to Reggae were the top-selling books on the subject, and widely acclaimed by the music press and fans alike. Illustrated throughout with over 400 pictures, many of them exclusive photos, the book also features exclusive interviews with reggaeÂ's top stars, and reviews over 500 albums. 2003 and 2004 have been the most successful years for reggae music on a global scale since the heyday of Bob Marley, with singers such as Sean Paul and Wayne Wonder regularly topping the UK and US pop charts. The new third edition of Rough Guide to Reggae is fully updated to cover this latest wave of Jamaican musicians, while not stinting on newly discovered recordings and reissues of classic albums of the past.

5 out of 5 stars If you do not understand the difference between Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae, after reading this book, you will........2006-07-30

When one realizes the amount of reggae music one can find today, it can be a bit overwhelming and intimidating to understand let alone comprehend in selecting a good purchase.
Prior to purchasing "The Rough Guide to Reggae" I did not know or understand the difference between Rockstady,Reggae,Roots music and how they differed from each other.
The purchasing of this book was one of the best Reagge purchases i've ever made. Barrow and Dalton give you a chronological order to the music's beginning and its gradual development up to the present.
Novices and experts alike cannot afford to be without this invaluable Reggae guide and indispensible reference book. It's money well spent and you will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Wait for 4th edition.......2006-05-26

Great book, one of the best resources, along with allmusic.com. However, if you have the 1st or 2nd edition, there is not enough new here to warrant buying this, wait for 4th edition.

If you don't have any of the editions, which amazon sells all three, this is a great start as are the other two.

4 out of 5 stars Niggling criticism.......2006-04-01

A wonderful book that has introduced my to a lot of good music-- a good guide with some interesting stories spread throughout.

Most of the albums or collections deemed to be essential are truly "must haves".

Now the criticisms:

1
---
The book is organized by genres, or stages of Jamaican music, rather than by artist. So, if you are interestedin finding recordings by one particular artist you may need to thumb through the entire book to find albums recorded during different periods.

For example, recordings by artists like Lee Perry and the Wailing Souls are spread throughout the book. This would not be a problem if the Index was more informative. But the mere mention of an artist (in passing) is sufficient to earn them a spot in the index, rendering it pretty meaningless.

(Boldfacing entries with record reviews would help users better navigate through the book--but I guess that is a criticism of the Rough Guide editors)

2
---
The authors occassionally demonstrate a rather snide attititude towards reggae's "crossover" audience. That is, a non-Jamaican, and presumedly white audience. Sometimes this is expressed as a rather back-handed compliment. For example, Lee Perry is well reviewed, but the authors must add that his admirers come mostly from "crossover" audience.

Elsewhere, they are quite dismissive of Linton Kwesi Johnson for seemingly the same reason. They make some comment about his crossover (ie white) following and dismiss dub poetry in general. And that is too bad, because "Dread Beat and Blood" is an excellent album that deserves more recognitiion.

3
---
Too many of the reissues that I have purchased based on the a reivew in this book have lead me to buy albums in which one of the author's has written the linear notes. On the whole the collections have been quite good, but it does lead me to question their objectivity.

Jesus Dread by Yabby You is excellent collection, but not nearly as great as their review would lead you to think. ;)

All that said, you won't find a better guide.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful reference & buyers guide.......2005-08-12

My parents raised me on roots, but when I wanted to broaden my DUB collection, one of the resources I turned to was the Rough Guide.

Rough Guide is a great go-to reference for the history of different reggae sub-genres and makes a solid buying guide. I've not regretted any music purchases I've made using information from this book. It really helped steer me toward the kinds of music I enjoy and away from things I don't like quite so much, but it also suggested successful adventures I might never have tried otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2003-02-08

The current Rough Guide covers the genesis of reggae and has a comprehensive discography guide to the music that began as ska and has evolved into the main stream culture of Jamaica and beyound the Jamaican community.

It would be easy to say that the book's crowning glory is it's many pictures both old and new of the many artists that has given the word reggae life and meaning. But the book is much more than that, it's a testament to the works of reggae performing artists and the inspiration behind those artists, the record producers....

Jamaica is a small but complex island. Famous for her beaches and music, there is an abundance of stretches of white sand bedecked by palm trees and lapped by turquoise waters. Reggae, Jamaica's other celebrated quality, is alive and happening. It is necessary to have a good guide to find your way to the Blue Mountains and Back River, check out the wildlife, and understand the island's culture--as well as to navigate your way through Kingston to the best reggae haunts, drinking holes, and Jamaican food stands. Jamaica: The Rough Guide does justice to all the major resorts and beaches, and to Jamaica's lesser-known charms.

Book Description

INTRODUCTION Rightly famous for its beaches and music, beautiful, brash Jamaica is much more besides. There's certainly plenty of white sand, turquoise sea and swaying palm trees, but there's also a huge amount to see away from the coast: spectacular mountains and rivers, tumbling waterfalls, and cactus-strewn savannah plains. The towns and cities, meanwhile, affirm that the island is far more than just a tourist attraction, particularly Kingston - the dynamic, sprawling metropolis which helped to inspire the music of Bob Marley and countless other home-grown reggae superstars. Despite Jamaica's immense natural allure, it's not just the physical aspect that makes the country so absorbing and, to many visitors, so utterly addictive. Notwithstanding the invasion of tourists and American satellite TV, Jamaica retains an attitude - a personality - that's more resonant and distinctive than you'll find in any other Caribbean nation. It's a country with a swagger in its step - proud of its history, sporting success and musical genius - but also with a weight upon its shoulders. For Jamaica has not avoided the familiar problems of a developing country such as dramatic inequality of wealth, and social tensions that occasionally spill over into localized violence, or worldwide headlines. The mixture is potent, and has produced a people as renowned for being sharp, sassy and straight-talking as they are laid-back and hip. People don't tend to beat around the bush here; Jamaicans get on with life, and this can sometimes make them appear rude or uncompromising. P! articularly around the big resorts, this direct approach is taken to extremes at times, with harassment reaching infuriating levels. But there's absolutely no reason to be put off. As a foreign visitor, the chances of encountering any trouble are minuscule, and the Jamaican authorities have spent millions making sure the island treats its tourists right. As the birthplace of the "all-inclusive" hotel, Jamaica has become well-suited for those who (like many people) want to head straight from plane to beach, never leaving their hotel compound. But to get any sense of the country at all, you'll need to do some exploring. It's undoubtedly worth it, as this is a country packed with first-class attractions, oozing with character, and rich with a musical and cultural heritage; if you're a reggae fan, you're in heaven.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, outdated guide book.......2007-03-20

This was written about 4 or 5 years ago. Most phone numbers are out of date. I had a very bad experience when trying to use this guide book and hope you can find something better.

5 out of 5 stars Helped build the excitement!.......2006-03-17

We ordered this book about 2 months before our trip to Jamaica, our first trip out of the USA. This book both helped us feel prepared and helped build our excitement. Knowledge aleviated any fears we were having about being fish out of water. This book is a must have for any "first-timer".

5 out of 5 stars excellent guidebook.......2006-01-05

I just returned from Jamaica. I took 3 guidebooks with me, Rough Guide, Lonely Planet and Frommers. Rough Guide blew the others out of the water, and according to the locals was the only decent guide. Lonely Planet was so poor on Jamaica, that we surmised the writer probably got hung up smoking ganja in Montego Bay and never made it to the other cities, using promotional brochures and faxed promotional blurbs to write the text. Meanwhile, Rough Guide presented a picture that fit with what the locals knew and recommended. We had a great trip, virtually skipping Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, and seeing a number of towns including Port Antonio, Treasure Beach and Runaway Bay. Rough Guide had excellent food, accommodation, and siteseeing recommendations throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know.......2000-09-26

I have been to Jamaica many times since 1972, doing research as an anthropologist, which includes reading everything I can about its people and culture as well as traveling about and living in various communities. I picked up this book shortly before my most recent trip, hoping to get some hints on places to stay as it's been awhile since I've been back. I read it thoroughly as I traveled extensively around the island for 18 days. And I'm quite impressed. It is an extremely informative and accurate guide to the history, culture, things to see and do, places to eat and stay. The hotel reviews are brief but to the point. The advice is sound. The maps are very helpful. The only criticism I can make is that in at least two cases I found the directions to be wrong. I am most impressed with the fact that the book can really get you out of the tourist areas and into the real Jamaica. It is a great guide for those who want to EXPLORE the island and come to know it well. This takes time, a car, and money, though. Finally, I'd like to add that the book is just the right size, easy to carry, and has a very sturdy cover and binding, so it'll survive more than one trip. I suppose the greatest compliment is that a Jamaican friend wanted me to give it to her after she discovered it had information on her own town that she didn't know.

4 out of 5 stars A valuable guide that will help you understand Jamaica.......2000-05-24

Jamaica has a distinct attitude and unique character unlike any other Caribbean island you are likely to visit. The people of this country are proud of their history, sportsmen, and artistic and musical genius. Yet the inequity of wealth, growing poverty, governmental corruption, and grave social tensions have created an attitude within Jamaicans that can be brash, sassy, rude, and often in-your-face. This is especially true around the big, all-inclusive resorts, which exacerbate the inequity of wealth.

A good guidebook should give you more than just star ratings on hotels and restaurants - it should help the savvy and curious traveler learn about the culture, politics, and people as well as tell you where to find the best beaches and hottest night clubs.

"Jamaica: The Rough Guide" is a good source for travel in Jamaica, although some content is lacking.

The authors have adequately covered all the basic information for visiting Jamaica. The accommodation and restaurant sections are ample enough to help the reader make a decision, but I found the ratings systems in guides such as Fielding to be easier to comprehend and use. A significant shortcoming is the lack of web sites or e-mail address...today, most hotels have e-mail and web sites that make booking a reservation easy and cheap. Since the guide is a 1999 reprint, this information should be included.

There are some very interesting and occasionally fascinating tidbits of information found in sidebars on the pages of this guidebook. For example, "Sexual Stamina Potions ensure a sexual libido in Jamaican men" and "Ackee: the national dish kills up to 10 people a year."

Overall, "Jamaica: The Rough Guide" is a valuable guide and will help you understand this wonderful country. It is an adequate guidebook as it pertains to recommending hotels and restaurants. Recommended >

I am a shower of the "fancier" guinea pigs and I really wish they had more on those breeds. Overall, it was a good book for identifying your pet shop guinea pig and for younger kids who want to read up on them. I'm looking for more books that actually have more to do with showing and grooming, though. But, like I said, it is an excellent kids book. If anyone has info on breeding/showing/grooming long-haired pigs like peruvians, e-mail me at skygirl@mediaone.net .

        5 out of 5 stars great book.......2000-02-29

Plain and simple, this is a very good book that describes the many varieties of guinea pigs. I wish there was more about the "rarer" breeds than a quick summary, but all in all, it is a very good book if you are a cavy fancier.

"No occupation is so delightful to me as the culure of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden."
            --Thomas Jefferson

An 18th-century statesman, a thoroughly modern gardener, a slightly one-sided correspondence on seeds, soil and the art of living...

For years, novelist Laura Simon had been building a garden around her Nantucket home, nurturing onions from wispy, pungent seedlings, spreading manure in early spring, harvesting in fall.  And with the passage of time, she longed for a correspondent with whom to exchange reflections on seeds and soil, to share her stories and her passion for gardening.  Unable to find such a person, Ms. Simon turned to the works of the eighteenth-century statesman and avid horticulturist Thomas Jefferson.  Thus began an only slightly one-sided correspondence between Ms. Simon and the Monticello gardener himself.  Interweaving her own observations about past and present with selected passages from Jefferson's writings, Simon has crafted a true epistolary adventure, filled with history and humor, a literate guide to gardening--and living a well-cultivated life.

5 out of 5 stars Opens a new world .......2007-07-16

I love this book! I've spent quite some time working on a new business card for myself using Williams' clear and basic instructions, and the process has been exciting and fun. I now have a business card that says much more about me and is light-years away from the standard format available at the do-it-yourself places.

If you can tell that your brochure/card/letterhead/flyer/poster looks terrible but have no idea why, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

My professor actually made us buy this book for our Intro. to Desktop Publishing course. I really like it. It has great design info for graphic designers and non-designers alike and has some humour thrown in there as well. I would highly recommend it.

This was an excellent book! The Hendricks piece together a few accounts on the events that led to the Creole Mutiny and the circumstances surrounding the lead figure of the mutiny, Madison Washington. This includes stories by Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown. They also include interesting facts about other heroic individuals who went far and beyond for freedom. It's a definite keeper and great reference book for the history of Africans in America. (For more on this subject and more visit: [...])

George Hendrick and Willene Hendrick's THE CREOLE MUTINY may prove of interest to a narrower audience of students of Afro-American and regional American history, but it's no less powerful for its coverage. Here is a story of revolt aboard a slave ship in 1841: one which led to British authorities offering freedom to the slaves who took over their captors and sailed into Nassau. Little has been written about this revolt because little has been known of it: pieces from different sources are brought together to fill in the gaps, here.
