Too much work!.......2007-08-02
I was looking for a cruise to Europe--so I bought this book. Save your money. This book is poorly organized. My husband and I wasted several hours trying to figure out how this book was organized. Then we realized it was not organized at all. I actually gave up and bought another book.
Very shallow overview with little critical information.......2005-05-29
We all love books with titles like these. They are going to tell us the "real" truth behind the corporate line. How well does this book live up to its promise?
First, the basics of the book. The first 130 pages holds background information - why cruises are cost effective, maps of key cruising regions, and so on. The rest of the book - which is about 660 pages total - is a ship by ship review of the main ships that you can choose to cruise on.
I bought this book, so obviously I was keen to hear the "secrets" :) But unfortunately, even though this version of the book came out only a year ago, I already see a large number of inaccuracies in it. It's not really a surprise - as much as they claim to be "unofficial", there is no way a group of reviewers (or especially the 2 who claim primary credit for writing this book) can go back and visit every ship listed, every year. But that means that either 1) the information is therefore inaccurate, or 2) they fall back on what the company reports, meaning they are no longer an unbiased 3rd party.
In addition, just what information are they giving you? I turned right to the Norwegian Majesty as I am looking to cruise with them shortly. They give stats like cabin count, draft, beam, etc. Undoubtedly they got those from the cruise lines, and didn't measure them themselves :). They list the decor colors, the names of the restaurants, the items in the cabins (desk, TV, etc.)
Really, the entire review (which is about 2 small pages long) is a transcript of information found on corporate pages. It says things like the Sky Deck has lounge chairs, rest rooms and showers. It really doesn't have any subjective information at all.
With the thousands of reviews available online, from people who DO go into the good, bad and ugly of each cruise line, I have to admit I was disappointed. Let's say I wanted to choose between the several cruise lines running to Bermuda, I don't know that these write-ups would really help over the official information found on the cruise ships' websites. With the information in the book not necessarily being accurate or up-to-date, even what they do show isn't something I could rely on fully. And given how much the price is for this book, it's really not very price-effective given how few pages are actually applicable for a given person.
That's not to say that the book is "bad" in any way. The beginning section is quite helpful, if basic. It talks about planning ahead, making sure you're in town a day early so that you don't risk missing your ship. It gives general advice on what to pack.
But again, you really do far better with web offerings - because instead of giving general advice on packing for "all cruises everywhere" (which has to include both Alaska and Jamaica), the web can give specific advice for specific lines going to specific destinations. Even two ships both going to a single island can have vastly different dress codes.
If someone doesn't have a web connection, and wants a general quick-reference book for scanning (say in the waiting room of a travel agency), this might be a good book to have. But if you're a cruiser who has a destination in mind, or a specific cruise ship in mind, this information is really far too brief.
Very Good Source For Cruise Information.......2003-11-23
"The Unofficial Guide to Cruises 2003" is a well written book that is a quite complete guide to virtually all cruises that you might realistically be interested in. The detail on different ships and lines is excellent, though I personally think that the Berlitz book "Ocean Cruising & Cruise Ships 2003" is more detailed on the ships themselves, and is generally easier to use than "The Unofficial Guide to Cruises 2003," though both have strong and weak points.
The strength of this book is in the complete and clear explanations of every aspect of a cruise for someone new to cruising. Some people like the breakdown by separate quality and value scales, but I didn't find it particularly user friendly, and often was scratching my head trying to resolve the grades received with narrative about particular ships. Once again, I think Berlitz has a more straightforward numerical system where it is clear why each ship got the overall score that it got.
While I prefer the Berlitz book marginally, this is also an excellent book with it's own unique viewpoints and strengths. My strategy has become to use the two books in tandem, as together there is a complete picture that neither book completely captures on it's own. Overall a noble effort and in the end this book is recommended for anyone considering a cruise, especially first time cruisers.
Not as complete as the "Frommer's Carribean Cruise" book.......2003-01-18
I had already booked my cruise when I purchased this book. I was looking for details on shore excursions, shipboard info and how to get to the port of Miami. Frommer's Carribean Cruise book had more of the information I was looking for. This "Unofficial Guide to Cruises" would be good if you were trying to decide which cruise to take. But again, there wasn't any information on what I was looking for in shore excursions, sightseeing, maps, etc.
overwhelmed no longer, thanks to this book.......2002-10-04
I am planning my honeymoon cruise with my bride, and I was feeling completely overwhelmed at the beginning of our quest to plan the voyage. I feared being "taken" and going into even more debt (you don't even want to know how much the wedding costs!).
I bought this book to bring me up to speed fast and protect me from tourist traps for wasting money. The book has been an excellent primer and reference guide, all in one. The first hundred or so pages teach you about the history of cruising and present cruising market, gives guidelines for choosing the cruise package right for you, and lists ways to capture those elusive "deep discounts." The second section (the next several hundred pages) gives detailed discriptions of the cruise lines (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, etc.) and reviews of the individual boats in the line; detailing dining options, crew, tipping, recreational activities and more.
The only knock on this book is that it promises to be critical of the cruise lines (saying it is an "unofficial" guide, so it can be negative) but it never is critical. It rates some boats as a 5 out of 10 on quality and a "C" on value, but it will go on to say that the boat is "exquisite" and "lavish" and leaves the reader wondering why the boat deserved the much lower rating ...
Book Description
Drawing on newly discovered documents in the National Archives,
Lincoln’s War is the only full-length account to date on Abraham Lincoln as Com-mander in Chief. For the first time, readers will see the war unfold as Lincoln saw it.
This wide-ranging account casts new light on Lincoln and his generals, his admirals, his controversial Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, and his outspoken confidant Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy. The reader will also learn the true story of Lincoln’s experiences as a soldier and encounter Lincoln as amateur strategist, Lincoln in his relationship with black servicemen, Lincoln in his dealings with the Committee on the Conduct of the War, and Lincoln in his friendship with weapons pioneer Christopher Spencer, the creator of the Spencer repeater. And
Lincoln’s War is filled with myriad illuminating anecdotes—including how the President, a frustrated inventor, liked to conduct his own hands-on weapons tests on waste ground near the White House.
It was Lincoln who, over the course of four years, created the role of Commander in Chief as we know it today. In doing so he saved the Union and changed the nation. This was the most important of his duties, and his greatest success. In
Lincoln’s War, Geoffrey Perret—the acclaimed biographer of Ulysses S. Grant, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy, and the author of four well-received works of military history, including
A Country Made by War—offers an original, vivid portrait of both a great leader and a tumultuous conflict.
Customer Reviews:
More Brilliant Civil War History!.......2007-04-17
Historian and author Geoffrey Perret has succeeded in writing yet another brilliant book!
This work brings together one of my favorite military historians and my favorite President. Perret can always be counted on to write great history. His works are always well written, researched and compelling.
In "Lincoln's War" Perret shows how Lincoln seized war powers, reserved for Congress by the Constituation, and made them his own. By the end of the war, the President evolved into an effective Commander and Chief who controlled all aspects of national strategy - political, economic, military and even informational - in his hands. The President was driven, as no other American politician was, to first preserve the Union and then to abolish Slavery throughout the United States.
Lincoln succeeded in both, due mostly to his talents as Commander and Chief and the backing of the Union Army. As a result, the modern Presidency owes its war powers to Abraham Lincoln.
This is truly a great read!
Second hand review.......2007-01-09
Despite some of the previous reviews. My husband is thoroughly enjoying this book. He is a Civil War buff and says that this book is tying together much of what he has read in the past regarding the Civil War.
Poetic evocation of Lincoln's character as tried by war.......2007-01-08
I found this a very moving account of Lincoln's presidency which focused
on his wartime decisions and his relationships with his cabinet, generals, soldiers in the field, and more. For a longtime reader of books on Lincoln and the Civil War it brought several new insights and anecdotes. The author obviously did a great amount of research into correspondence of the time, newspapers, diaries, etc. He is obviously well read in his subject because he doesn't repeat the accounts offered so often in other works.
I don't understand the many uncharitable reviews here of this book, and the poor rating. It sounds like part professional jealousy from other historians, part just plain churlishness. It may be that the title has attracted statistical students of troop movements, constitutional law analysts, who may well find some factual mistakes. Certainly there are NOT errors on every page, poor man!
A very astute, even astonishing work from a learned writer (who sent me quite often to my dictionary) who has not forgotten how to feel.
An Engaging Popular Biography of Lincoln.......2006-08-05
Geoffrey Perret's _Lincoln's War: The Untold Story of America's Greatest President as Commander in Chief_ tells the story of Lincoln's presidency in a readable, entertaining style. As a prelude to Lincoln's presidency, the early chapters describe Lincoln's formative experiences first as a volunteer soldier during the Black Hawk War, then as a successful country lawyer, and finally as a Illinois Congressman. Establishing this background, the biography develops the following thesis: Lincoln's presidency defined our understanding of the scope of the modern executive branch, extending executive power and, to some extent, inventing the role of Commander in Chief in order to defeat the South's insurrection.
Perret portrays Lincoln's humanity and, in particular, his deep affection for the Union soldiers, who looked upon him with reverence even during the most troubled days in the Civil War. Perret also focuses on Lincoln's day-to-day involvement with the military campaign itself, including battlefield visits when Lincoln placed his own safety in risk. Lincoln's studious, perspicacious interest in the new technologies of warfare is a major theme. Perret argues, for example, that Lincoln's personal requisition of multi-loading carbines for a sharp-shooter brigade may have saved Washington, DC, at Fort Matthews, during a Confederate assault in the middle of the war. Throughout the book, Perret chronicles Lincoln's vexations with the commanding generals in the Army of the Potomac prior to Ullyses Grant's accession.
While concentrating on these themes, Perret conveys a sense of the desperation that Lincoln felt during the war and the precariousness of the Union's preservation, especially in the early years. Far from idealizing Lincoln, as the title of Perret's biography might suggest, we see his flaws as well, which make him an ever more impressive historical figure. For instance, Winfield Scott, the aging Commander of U.S. forces at the outset of the war, argued for a strategy of slowly dividing the Confederacy--cutting off supply and communication lines--rather than the quick capture of Richmond. Scott's plan was, in fact, how the Confederacy was ultimately defeated despite the fact that much of Lincoln's attention, from 1861 onward, remained on the Northern Virginia campaign and rapidly seizing Richmond.
A number of reviewers have pointed out the historical inaccuracies in this account and allude to James McPherson's critical review of the biography. I can imagine how for a reader with a detailed knowledge of the Civil War these errors could be quite distracting and/or exasperating. Because I am not an expert on the Civil War or the specifics of military history, much of the book refreshed my memory of the U.S. history that I learned in high school. This was quite enjoyable. My own belief is that a general reader, like myself, still can profit from this book, despite its faults, and likely will not be seriously mislead about the broad historical picture.
A disgrace to the Historical Tradition .......2005-04-28
As the author or editor of fourteen books on the Civil War and Indian Wars of the American West, I understand that errors of fact inevitably creep into the best of books. But I have never encountered a work of history with so many egregious errors as this one. On nearly every page one finds misstatements and historical lies of the most enormous sort. No, Mr. Perrett, President Lincoln did not dream up the idea one summer day in 1862 to issue paper currency; he merely signed an act of Congress, passed several months earlier, that called for paper currency. No, Mr. Perrett, the Federals did not walk up Marye's Heights "like tourists" during the Chancellorsville campaign; they encountered bitter resistance and lost heavily. No, Mr. Perret, Corinth, Mississippi, is not on the Mississippi River - not even close.
The author may have some intriguing conclusions. But it is impossible to give them the slightest credence when they rest on a foundation so factually shaky.
I could go on, but I heartily recommend the reader to Pulitzer Prize Winning Historian James McPherson's review of this book in The Nation. He properly relegates it to the historical trash can.
If it were possible to give zero stars to a book, I would do so here. I've written dozens of reviews for journals and magazines, and this is the first completely negative one that I have ever felt compelled to put forward.
By the way, I noticed one reviewer offering as an excuse for the scores of errors possible lapses by "administrative staff," or by research assistants. Baloney. And if that is the case, and these erros slipped past him, than Mr. Perret is hopelessly ignorant of the subject matter.
Book Description
In this highly praised examination of Lincoln and his times, Albert Marrin shows how a principled but imperfect man-brilliant and determined but also cautious and prejudiced-grew under the pressure of personal tragedy and national crisis to become our greatest president. A beautifully researched, riveting account of Lincoln and the Civil War period, Commander in Chief was named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults and a Booklist Editors' Choice.
Customer Reviews:
History made easy.......2007-06-27
A Marrin is a wonderful author. He makes history come alive. He writes in an interesting manner and doesn't have a lot of excess verbage. I have several of his books and have enjoyed each one of them.
The Human Side of Lincoln.......1999-12-12
For the first time, I came to know Lincoln not as an iconified hero, but as a funny, direct, engaging and committed human being as I read this book. The author has thorough notes of very detailed research and tells a story that others omitted or overlooked. It made me want to read much more about Lincoln, especially more of the piercing wit and emotional perseverance shared in this book.

Book Description
Though she has travelled the globe recording her artistic reaction in drawings and paintings, her roads through India, Canada or France always lead back to the land of her birth, Egypt. Her drawings of Egypt reflect her emotional and spiritual responses to the country's many layers of history and myth and to the people who populate them. This personal presentation of Egypt shares both visual and verbal thoughts as it leads us on a tour of this land of fact and fiction through words that paint pictures and drawings that tell stories. This book is as much about the artist as it is the land, and a treasure on both counts.
Customer Reviews:
More than an art book!.......2007-01-04
This book was nothing like what I expected! Originally, I expected a traditional art book introducing the reader to Anna's paintings and artistic work, with paintings somewhat similar to the one on the cover.
So, when I glimpsed through it to find only sketches (in charcoal or pencil), I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed. But, once I started reading Anna's description of her sketches, I was so taken by her impressions about Egypt! They were so beautifully written, captivating, and sometimes even poetic. Her interpretations reflect a true fascination of Egypt and a genuine affection for each corner she painted there. She also included some historical narratives that added certain depth and understanding to her sketches. So, I got this book for its paintings, yet I ended up with much more!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent sidekick to QXP 7.......2007-05-09
Im very happy with this book overall. I actually used it in my preparation for my Quark XPress Expert Certificaton exam. It saved me on a few occasions during the exam as well (open book). I highly recommend this book for all levels of users as it has quick and efficient tricks and techniques.
QXP 7.......2007-04-12
I have always liked the QuickStart Guides because I learn visually and appreciated having them show what the menu, screen and final result should look like. However, while this book does show the new features and there are many, I was extremely disappointed in that they didn't review the powerful new Web layout features that were stressed at MacWorld and on Quarkk's web site. Here, they refer to an earlier book acting as if nothing different has happened. It has and someone, somewhere needs to write a book on just this feature.
Quark showed us in their MacWorld booth the ease of creating both a print and web page at the same time, in fact dragging items from one to the other. For someone who struggles with Dreamweaver, this was web design heaven. Quark does all the heavy lifting and while their own book is good, it hardly begins to show what can be
done.
Book Description
If you're like most designers and publishers who work with QuarkXPress, you've been waiting a long time for this release. In fact, you're probably one of the last people on your block to start using Mac OS X or Windows XP because you've been waiting for your most important application--QuarkXPress--to offer native support for either. Well, the wait is finally over, and here to get you up to speed on it quickly and easily is
QuarkXPress 6 for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide. In these pages, best-selling authors and veteran educators
Elaine Weinmann and
Peter Lourekas use task-based, step-by-step instruction and loads of visual aids to provide a soup-to-nuts grounding in QuarkXPress 6, including all that's new in this ground-breaking release: project files containing multiple layouts, Synchronized Text, improved table creation, and more. Progressing from the basics of planning and designing layouts, working with text, and creating and importing graphics to more advanced topics like exporting documents as Web pages and adding hyperlinks, this indispensable reference covers it all.

Concise, clear, and effective.......2005-10-14
EXCELLENT reference book. Material is presentedly lucidly, without the superfluous details. The extra visual guides facilitate the learning process extremely well. If you are looking for a book that covers the fundamentals (including flowing text and styling sheets), I HIGHLY recommend this visual quick guide book.
After all, who wants to read a verbose material that never seems to address your questions?
From a novice Quarker.......2005-08-06
Those of us who communicate in spoken English sometimes despair of technical manuals written by those who don't. This is true even for those of us who are quite literate in computer-speak. This Vistual Quickstart Guide to QuarkXPress 6 is a wonderful exception. Quark is a highly intuitive program that makes sense once one grasps the basics, and I found this an excellent reference guide to learning this powerful program. However, I found it worked best if I was at my computer exploring the areas being discussed in the text. What was most helpful to me were the screen illustrations.
Have you ever read the dictionary cover to cover?.......2004-09-11
Reading this book in order to learn QuarkXpress is akin to reading the dictionary cover to cover in order to learn the English language. Can it be done? Maybe. But it is not recommended.
This book may be useful as a detailed reference guide on a given subject but it should not be used to learn Quark. After attempting to read this book cover to cover for 70+ pages I had to put it down and find another quick start book to learn Quark.
Excellent and concise.......2004-01-27
I have read a couple of the Visual Quick Start books by these authors and find them to be readable and concise.
The way the material is portrayed is precise, and conveys the general idea of the task to be accomplished with a minimum of extraneous information.
Highly recommended.
The only downside is that there is not example material included with the books.
A
Nothing Less Than Awesome.......2003-08-07
I'll stay away from long reviews. If you have used Elaine Weinman's books before, you know to expect a first-class guide. If you haven't, put down the ... bible and go for this one. I taught myself Quark 4 from one of her books and these are invaluable references.

Worth the money and your time ..........2005-08-25
I have read author David Blatner's book on quark and being very familar with that program, I found his book on moving to indesign immensely helpful. You get great tips on how to do things that you have already established in your quark workflow. The index is well organized and a quick reference.
Not well organized.......2005-08-24
Hard to find what I wanted. Preferred the Sams All in One for Creative Suite 2. Much easier to navigate. This book was a waste of money.
It Moved Me!.......2005-08-03
As always with a Blatner book, this guide delivers exactly what it says it will. I was up and running in InDesign in no time and continue to reference its succinct text as I work. I recommend this to anyone who knows Xpress and wants to get InDesign going in a hurry.
For all the switchers to InDesign.......2004-11-01
Many or those who switch to Adobe InDesign from QuarkXpress or PageMaker these days. Those who do might not need a book about everything that InDesign is and is able to do. What they need is a book about the differences in techniques between the applications. Then this book is a good choice. It compares how things were done in QuarkXpress or PageMaker to how it is done in InDesign. If you also want to dig a bit deeper into InDesign you buy both this book and Real World InDesign CS. If you only want to get started and get over the obstacles with changing to new application that in principle does what you have done for years in that other application, but in another way than what you are used to, you chose this book.
I warmly recommend this book, and I use it in courses for switchers to InDesign.

Product Description
Everyone loves an anecdote, a witty comment, a humorous gibe, a short remark that is deceptively simple but that shines a bright ray of truth on an obscure aspect of life. This book is packed cover to cover with such gems. How did wise Jews speak about faith - and how did they respond to the barbs and the taunts of the unfaithful? How did they give the benefit of the doubt while maintaining the principles of truth and justice? In this fascinating book, over forty topics are illuminated with many hundreds of wise and witty comments. The book is an education, but it is also fabulously entertaining reading. Pick it up and flip the pages. Wherever you stop to read, you will be amply rewarded. Peruse it for five minutes or five hours - you will be equally rewarded. This book is the third in the series by Shmuel Himelstein, and the master anthologizer has not lost his touch. Rarely is a book so simultaneously entertaining and enlightening.
