Provides solid information and facts.......2001-09-13

Fodor's has put together a solid collection of facts and information for visiting the National Parks in the West, but the avid hiker and outdoorsperson would do well to add other pieces of literature to their collection before setting out. This book provides essential information such as phone numbers, addresses, and directions to the parks. It details options for camping in and out of the parks, as well as lodging in cities. However, I found a number of the prices they listed to be out of date, and some of the phone numbers were inaccurate. These were minor inconveniences, however, and did not overshadow the overall effectiveness of the guide.

As far as activities, the book offers some brief guidelines for hikes and drives around the parks. I found these descriptions to be very impersonal and vague. For example, it lists trails as being "moderately difficult" without explaining what types of difficulties one might encounter. For a hiker, there is a big difference between a steep climb and precipitous footing, but this book does little to detail what one might expect on a given trail. I found the "America's National Parks for Dummies" guide to be much more informative as far as specific trail conditions and wildlife concerns (e.g. grizzly and black bear areas, mountain lions, etc.) Fodor's guide does not address these issues, which are also of utmost concern for most backcountry hikers. Additionally, the editors seem to abide by a policy of "Just the Facts" - they offer little to nothing in the way of ratings or opinions regarding which campsites and facilities may be better maintained within the parks. Most avid campers I know value a firsthand opinion when trying to decide where to pitch their tents - and reading that a campsite is quiet and primarily tents, versus noisy and popular with RVs is extremely helpful information to have in hand.

We used both the Fodor's and Dummies guides on a six-week cross-country trip and found them to be nice complements to one another. The Dummies guide covers fewer parks but in greater detail, and offers candid opinions; the Fodor's guide gives you all the essentials you need for planning a visit to the park. If you don't plan on doing much hiking, this book could be all you need, but I recommend supplementing it with a more descriptive guide.

Good Resource.......2001-08-01

I am beginning my research for a vacation to the South West. This is a good starting place. It touches on most of the parks with pretty decent descriptions and pictures. You can't go wrong with this book.

Easily the best national park guide.......2000-03-06

The amazon.com review and book description are absolutely correct. This book contains the perfect amount of information for visiting the parks--we used it to visit 18 national parks in the sumer of '99, and found the itineraries and best-ofs to be wonderful. Research was solid and presented in extremely easy to read format. Look no further for a national park guide!

Great All-Around Guide!.......1999-12-22

This manual may not suit the requirements of the most ardent of backpackers and thrill seekers, but for an average Joe Camper like myself, it really came in handy through Washington State, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and on up into Banff and Jasper. A most resourceful guide that lists National Park Service information, directions to the Parks, campsites, hiking trails, info on backwoods camping...even tells you where you can shower after the fourth day! My only criticism is that my copy is as beat up as my hiking boots. A great resource to have, whether you're only there for a day, a drive-in camper, day hiker, or backpacker. I highly recommend it. Great job, Fodors!

Indispensible!.......1999-04-23

This book totally rocks! This is my National Parks bible. I use the National Geographic book for maps and pictures and this one for the trails, lodging and other details. The hike recommendations are the best of any national park book I've seen.

i love this book!!! personally my favorite people in history were the vikings and the japanese. i got so much info from this book that i found 12 mistakes in my textbook. i still read it today and it never gets old. on stormy nights i read it untill the storms over. you will like it too!

Horrible history books are geared towards kids but are filled with tons of fun and interesting facts about the periods in question. In this case.... Vikings! From clothing to food, you learn more (than you wanted to know), about Norsemen...The illustrations by Martin Brown are great, and Terry Deary's writing is quite entertaining. 5 stars for a fun and amusing read. 5 stars all the way!

Extremely good book.......2001-12-08

I am a big fan of this series and own tons of them. I am a history buff and also love comics and this book has both. If you are looking for a book that is easy to read but is also very fun to read, buy a horrible history. Terry Deary makes a bunch of facts about vikings into a very fun book. The comics are really funny and have great bits of puns and sarcasm. These books are designed to make history fun for people who don't like history. If I hadn't loved history before I picked up one of these books, I sure would love it now.

Good Overview.......2005-11-28

This book provided a good overview of lawns. There were many clear color pictures included, and the text was simple to read. I would have preferred a little more detail for the techniques described in the book. For instance, aerating was given only a paragraph or two and didn't have details on tools, spacing, or depth. This book, however, detailed information on how to read a grass seed or fertilizer label. This book is good for a novice, but if you want to get serious about your lawn, find a book with more details and that is more up to date.

In the past I have always hired services to care for my lawn. This past year I decided, for a number of reasons, to do it myself. I bought a nice mower, a fertilizer spreader, and this book. The information contained in this book was extremely helpful to a novice like me. I also followed the program set forth by the fertilizer manufacturer I chose and mowed and watered according to the advice set forth in this book.

Frankly, I was shocked by how quickly my lawn improved. You have to understand that my lawn was basically dead and full of weeds. It seemed like it was mostly weeds. But getting the lawn mowed properly, with some good fertilizer and weed control and sufficient water creates amazing results.

This book helped me understand different grass types, weed varieties and how to treat them, how to select fertilizers and how much to apply based upon grass type, how much work you want to put into your lawn, and soil types. Your lawn can take as much work as you want to put into it, but the minimum amount can be pretty low. I probably picked a medium amount because of all the recovery I had to accomplish. My neighbors routinely complimented the lawn and by the end of the season it wasn't much work at all.

This book is concise, well illustrated, and very informative. It sure helped me and I believe that if you are a beginner like me, it can be of great help to you.

is not exactly a picnic in the sun.

Not only can overwatering kill your grass, you can end up with all sorts of problems if you fertilize too much. We are talking about burning grass, planting the wrong grass seeds and living to see your grass take on Amazon like proportions.

This is a great book all about lawns. Great pictures and useful reference information.

However, this book is the older version of the newer "Scotts Lawns: Your Guide to a Beautiful Yard." I know, because I purchased both of them. They are both by the same publisher, and contain many identical pictures. Of course, the pictures of generic fertilizer and lawn equipment in the Scotts version have been replaced with Scotts-brand items. But, the Scotts book is larger, newer, and contains more information. So, if the branding doesn't bother you, I recommend buying that one instead.

The Best Lawn Care Reference.......2002-05-16

The best, most comprehensive lawn book I've found. Very helpful illustrations and descriptions of various grasses, weeds and pests. Discusses lawnmower types and maintenance, compares types of sprinklers and recommends when to weed and feed. Covers everything you'll need to know.

Get Experienced Again and Again This Gets Better Each Time.......2007-04-02

This is actually the third time I've bought this book. About a decade or so ago I had a copy of this and it got lost or stolen or something. I remembered it because I was actually impressed that the songs herein cold actually be transcribed especially this accureately. I got a second copy after my sight reading skills had improved somewhat and used it often enough for the pages to start to come loose. So, I bought a 3rd copy of it. The transcriptions are challenging to anyone's sightreading abilities, but the rewards of a little bit of effort are very satifying. The book is accurate giving great insight into Hendrix solos and choice of(often apparently jazz influenced)chord voicings. A must for any guitarist who wants to learn these songs.

A Good Source for Investigating Jimi's Style.......2007-03-02

At the time I write this, two other customer reviews exist. One laments the book is full of mistakes and inaccurate transcriptions. The other insists it is note-for-note perfect and an invaluable resource for learning to play these songs. In an article written by Joe Gore for Guitar Player magazine shortly after the first edition of this TAB book was released (around 1989, I believe), he called the Hal Leonard Hendrix series "the finest Hendrix transcriptions available, despite a shocking number of music typos." I think Mr. Gore's statement comes closest to hitting the mark.

Yes, there are mistakes in the book, here and there. But, I think most people can sort them out easy enough. There are some passages (usually those a bit hard to hear on the recording) that I question if they accurately reflect exactly what Hendrix played. But, the majority of the transcriptions are unquestionably correct, and the passages in this TAB book which I think might vary a bit definitely sound good and are "Hendrixesque." Hendrix himself never played the same thing twice, and it's unlikely that anybody is going to be able to play EXACTLY like Hendrix, no matter how perfect the transcription.

So, my take on the situation is that the true usefulness of any transcription book is to serve as a departure point which offers insight into a particular player's style and which provides practice material which allows a player to internalize aspects of that style into their own playing. Therefore, I can live with a book that has mostly accurate transcriptions, in spite of a lot of typos. If you feel the same, you'll might find this book valuable. If not, I guess you'll need to sit down with a recording and try to figure it out for yourself. Actually, that's probably the best way. But, doing so will require having more skill and patience than I do :-)

ripped off!.......2004-02-21

There are so many mistakes in this book with both the notation & tab (too many beats in a bar, mistakes in fingering, etc.)that it's almost funny. In addition to this, some of the transcriptions are ridiculously incorrect with regards to what is actually being played as well. It's really a shame, because it could have been a great book.

The Best Guitar Tab Book Out There!!!!!!.......2002-12-19

This guitar tab book is by far the best one out there! Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist of all time and this book proves it.There are really great Hendrix classics in here too. Some like "Spanish Castle Magic","Little Wing","Castles Made of Sand",and "Bold As Love". These tabs are all on the money and are great to play and further your skills as a guitar player. If you are a good bassist you can figure out the bass lines from these tabs too. So go out and buy this book..........You Won't be disappointed!

Definitely worth it for the photos.......2005-12-05

I like a book with photos of my favorite subject to be substantial in size and this book delivers that. It is also mostly photos. So, for the sake of the photos alone, this book is worth it. Any time I can get a book about Jimi that is filled with a bunch of photos of him, that's a good deal given, of course, that there's a limited supply of photos of him. "Bold As Love- The Jimi Hendrix Experience" is a great book on Jimi, whether you're an old fan or someone who wants an introduction. It gives a well-balanced, brief bio of JH in 115 photo-packed pages. Speaking of photos, this book really delivers in that department. Many full- and half- page photos in their original glory brilliantly illustrate the many fascinating moods of uh, maybe the coolest guy ever. 'Bold As Love' is not as exhaustive as Gleebeck's 'Electric Gypsy', but it offers a more candid look at the JH legend . If you thought 'Electric Gypsy' was a little Chandler/Kramer heavy, you might enjoy this perspective. In fact, 'Bold As Love' would be a nice companion to 'Electric Gypsy'. Worth twenty bucks just for the photos.
