Book Description
Wilderness in many parts of the globe is under considerable threat from human development. This has important ramifications not only for fauna and flora but also for human well-being. Wilderness in the Bible addresses this ecological crisis from a biblical and theological perspective. It first establishes the context of a biblical study of wilderness and then passes to an analysis of the attitudes towards in the canonical biblical record. This provides the biblical basis for the development of a theology of wilderness for the twenty-first century. The Australian wilderness is taken as an illuminating case study.

Book Description
Nneka’s little brother Chidi is always saying that his favorite color is blue. When Nneka asks him why, he replies, “because the sky is blue and my best shirt is blue.” So Nneka decides to teach him about other colors seen in their village — red for the chiefs' caps, yellow for the gari they eat, brown for the okwe game board — and to tell him why she likes them. Ifeoma Onyefulu here introduces young readers to a rainbow palette, African style, with warm words and photographs offering a colorful glimpse of Nigerian village life.

My seven year old nephew and I read this book one rainy day and we both thought that it was great. The colors and the story were well thought out and we would like to find other books like it.

Clip Art,More, and Even More Clip Art for the Liturgical year.......2002-05-29
I have used the liturgical clip art books from Liturgical Press for more than ten years. They are fabulous, clear, and cover a broad range of seasonal liturgical needs. The art items are presented in a variety of combinations and sizes, so if you don't have a copier that reduces, it helps. These volumes and also those by Placid Stuckenschneider are among th best any where commercially available.

Book Description
Wabi sabi, the quintessential Japanese design aesthetic, is quickly gaining popularity around the world, as evidenced by recent articles in Time, The Chicago Tribune and Kyoto Journal. Taken from the Japanese words wabi, which translates to less is more, and sabi, which means attentive melancholy, wabi sabi refers to an awareness of the transient nature of earthly things and a corresponding pleasure in the things that bear the mark of this impermanence. As a design style, wabi sabi helps us to appreciate the simple beauty in imperfection--of a chipped vase or a rainy day, for example.
Customer Reviews:
wabi sabi for the illiterate and unpoetic.......2006-01-23
Of all the wabi sabi books I've attempted to read, this one is the most poorly written. Same old regurgitated information, but written by someone who must have flunked out of their high school English composition class. Sorry, with so many better books out on the subject-at least three-why subject yourself to this gibberish?
Wabi Sabi - Beyond Hobby.......2006-01-19
Although concepts of Wabi Sabi have been around for centuries, it is wryly amusing that no Japanese has ever attempted an analysis. (All the books on this subject seem to be by Westerners with certain orientations.) This is because Zen disdains intellectualism and dismisses rational approaches to satori out of hand. The Japanese logic has always been to avoid the subject, because the very use of prose is to admit one's spiritual failure.
Andrew Juniper has come to satisfy our rational cravings with a cogent, indeed elegant little book. He even attempts a definition of the term on page 51: "Wabi sabi is an intuitive appreciation of transient beauty in the physical world that reflects the irreversible flow of life in the spiritual world. It is an understated beauty that exists in the modest, rustic, imperfect, or even decayed, an aesthetic sensibility that finds a melancholic beauty in the impermanence of all things."
Is not every syllable meaningful? I am very grateful for bi-cultural people who write so well. He explores the nexus between Zen, Japanese culture and wabi sabi in straight forward language that yet remains respectful. He excels at big picture description. "The Universal Spirit of Wabi Sabi" is a short concluding section with prose as jarring as it is graceful.
I am not about to wabi-sabiize my life. Such change is for young radicals. But I do think Westerners as well as Eastern converts to Consumerism should be aware of alternatives that someday may be thrust upon us. There will come a time when planned obsolescence will be regarded as criminal, so you may want to invest a few shares in a good wabi sabi mutual fund. Juniper's book will get you started.
Just what I was looking for........2004-12-17
I dont know how to put it nicely, but smellpuppies review below couldnt be more off the mark even if he tried.
Wabi Sabi for Artists...etc. is just a teaser compared to this book! W.S. for Artists is a great book to start off with and could be read in a couple of hours.
However Juniper's book delves more into the history of the Tea Ceremony, Zen Buddhism, Modern Art and the philosophy of wabi sabi aesthetics..
Juniper's knowledge is vast and more importantly, insightful. He clearly has a deep understanding of both Western and Eastern worldviews without favoring one or the other.
Inauthenticity?.......2003-12-08
As an enthusiastic student of chado and the Japanese arts in general, I bought this book thinking I would learn something new about wabi and/or sabi. Simultaneously I also purchased the Koren book Wabi-Sabi: for Artists, Designers, Poets and Philosophers. In an oddly disturbing way, both books have uncanny similarities in their conceptual and pictorial approaches--except that the Koren book is vastly more insightful, more beautiful, and was written nine years earlier! What's going on?
Exploring the Wabi Sabi Concept.......2003-11-29
This book is a manifesto for a traditional Japanese aesthetic. The author begins with an operational definition of wabi sabi: "If an object or expression can bring about, within us, a sense of serene melancholy and a spiritual longing, then that object could be said to be wabi sabi" (p. 11). He then proceeds to round out this definition by examining different aspects of the concept of wabi sabi such as its historical origin in Zen, its development in Japanese culture, and its expression in Japanese arts and crafts. Finally, he lists design criteria, identifies suitable materials, and sketches out ethical principles that are required for the creation of objects that are wabi sabi.
The author's tone sometimes becomes anxious and urgent when discussing commercial culture and design, both in the West, where materiality is "ever-encroaching" (p. 3), and in Japan, where "the space afforded to wabi sabi is certainly on the decline, and its future relevance to Japan is under threat" (p. 58). Also, he treads very lightly when discussing the way wabi sabi objects became status symbols in Japan.
The volume itself is a well-designed paperback with a readable font, wide margins, and austere black-and-white photographs that present some very memorable images.
Immediately after finishing reading this book, I wanted to give it a rating of four stars. The next day I noticed that I was thinking about the spaces and objects in my life a different way, so I've upped the rating to five stars. Read the book and give it a few days to work.
Customer Reviews:
Whet my appetite..........2002-06-13
This is a beautiful book. The book is not comprehensive, but I don't believe it intends to be. I appreciate how the author visually and lyrically introduces vocabulary and ideas through his own experiences. I now want to know more. I will continue to refer back to this book as I search for more knowledge and as I pursue my arts (architecture, as well as art). I was enlightened, as well as astonished. I'd like to keep that feeling.
A pale facsimile of the real thing.......2000-10-05
This book only skims the surface of wabi-sabi, dealing in the tired truisms of the "cherry blossoms in the spring" type and the cheap exoticism that often plagues Western writing about Japanese aesthetics.
As a student of Japanese culture, I bought this book and was very disappointed. You're not missing anything--skip it.
nothing special, except the dull photos.......2000-06-08
This book is derivative and enraptured with cliche. The photos look like cheap snapshots gussied up for placement in a rather nice design. But the elegance of the overall production is the exact antithesis of the the REAL wabi sabi, so expertly revealed in that other book. They could have named this anything, and you wonder if the title was chosen to do anything but ride on the other author's achievement. I'd ignore this one.
The lesser Wabi-Sabi.......2000-05-03
How can two books with virtually the same title be so different? I bought both books that Amazon lists with "wabi" and "sabi" in the titles. The other book is highly informative, imaginative, and profoundly artful in the manner of wabi-sabi. WABI SABI: A NEW LOOK AT JAPANESE DESIGN, however, would be more accurately titled "WABI SABI LITE." It is a regurgitation of all the tired cliches about Japanese design and culture I have come to loathe rereading. Sorry. I'd let this one pass.

Book Description
Where the art of feng shui (the arranging of homes, gardens, and businesses to attract wealth, success, and health) leaves off, the art of wabi sabi picks up through balancing and harmonizing homes, gardens, businesses in Zen-like fashion. Wabi Sabi Style embodies the essence of Japanese design.
Flowing from spring to summer, autumn, and winter, each chapter is steeped in Japanese lore and techniques for incorporating the wabi sabi philosophy into one's own home. Breathtaking photography brings wabi sabi to life, demonstrating the means for creating it anywhere.
Customer Reviews:
an unintelligible book.......2003-01-14
Sorry, I don't understand why this book gets glowing write-ups on the Amazon review page. I found this book poorly thought out and amateurishly written. Yes, there are pretty pictures, but I wanted to learn something about wabi sabi. I didn't.
A Life-Changing Decision.......2002-10-22
Wabi-Sabi is a must-read book for those into Asian Design and simplicity. Before I read the book, my room was a disaster. Now, my room is completely transformed along with my lifestyle. I have thrown away all of my junk or clutter, and only display a few items which are important to me. By changing the paint color to a more earthly and natural tone of color and using natural wood for the trim as contrast, my room clearly displays beauty in its simple form. The authors of the book, give great advice in beautiful detail as how one can apply the wabi-sabi approach to one's home regardless of its size. The ability to stay with a minimalistic attitude shows wisdom and self-control as explained in the book.
Much appreciation to the authors!!!.......2002-06-16
Much appreciation to the authors for bringing Wabi Sabi to the masses. In doing so they have rescued Wabi Sabi from the pretentious "WABI SNOBBY" pseudo intellectuals.
here is a sampling of a few jewels found in the text of Wabi Sabi Style;
"To ennoble the ignoble"
"Moving beyond the glossy, gilded, and gaudy - the simple organic elegance of wabi sabi is for those who have no need to prove who they are. Wabi Sabi is for those who are at peace with themselves and want to feel the peace of the world around them at all times."
"In order to understand wabi sabi, beauty must first be understood on a conceptual level. The traditional Japanese concept of beauty differs radically from that of the West. The Japanese have long held the notion that beauty is not inherent in an object but rather is experiential. Given an order set of circumstances, beauty is the elicited response experienced by the perceiver."
I am an admirer of Leonard Koren's writing on wabi sabi, but it is apparent that there are those who make the unfortunate mistake of comparing the Crowley's work with Koren's. As Confucius has told us "comparisons are odious" Even the work of Lennox Tierney deserves recognition. The Japanese know that "there are many paths to reach the top of Mount Fuji"
It is apparent that there are those who deem themselves the guru's and sensei's of a fabricated "wabi sabi movement or school" these individuals or groups are in direct opposition to the spirit of wabi sabi . Let us all remember Koren's wabi sabi universe, under "Moral Precepts" and "focus on the intrinsic and ignore material hierarchy."
Thank you to Koren, Tierney, and the Crowley's for bringing the values found in wabi sabi to the west.
Dumbing down wabi-sabi........2001-10-12
Will "wabi-sabi" become the new buzzword among corporate retailers and mall mongers? That seems to be the authors' intention. They attempt to transform an elegant and rarified sense of beauty into corporate easy speak: high bulk, low content. The authors' flawed methodology is to take a mishmash of things Japanese and, by association, assume it's wabi-sabi. They haven't done their homework.
A MUST READ !!!!.......2001-10-04
The authors have achived the elusive, communicating concepts of wabi and sabi through poetic text and evocative images.
Book Description
Create beautiful gardens and grow healthy perennials ideally suited for zones 3, 4, and 5. Emphasizing basic good gardening techniques, the author answers such questions as How do I start a garden? Where do I plant? What is a good fertilizer? When should I mulch? A home gardener, Joan demystifies and simplifies gardening with a commonsense approach that makes growing perennials accessible to most everyone.
Customer Reviews:
Creating a Perennial Garden in the Midwest.......2006-03-16
I think this is an excellent book and I will make good use of it.
Something missing.......2005-08-30
Lots of pretty pictures, but no information on zones. Because of cold winters, the zones of each plant is important to me. I have to do additional research to find out if a given plant is suitable for the climate I live in.
This is my Grandma.......2005-02-03
I grew up talking about this book with my Grandma (the author). This has been keenest interest since I could remember. Walking through her gardens outside her home have allowed me to learn and grow with her words.
Best for the midwest!.......2004-05-13
I recently moved to Madison, Wisconsin and am new to gardening. Although we are still in the process of "hardscaping" this year (our lot was in desperate need of retaining walls and a couple of updated patios/pathways), I am reading everything I can about plant selection. Unlike LOTS of other landscaping books, this book shows pictures of plants together AND names and discusses every plant in the pictures. So I already have several good ideas about plant combinations that look attractive together--all I have to do is prepare the soil and go to the nursery. So many other books are full of beautiful pictures, but fail to tell you the names of the plants in the pictures. If you are a beginner, this book is a perfect start!
An inspiring book.......2003-12-04
This book was an inspiration to me. Since reading it, I've added many of the plants discussed in this book to my garden. I've also found the author's ideas on shade gardening to be very helpful as I, too, have a shady garden.

Book Description
This is a sequel to the immensely useful Nag Hammadi Bibliography 1948-1969, which was the first volume to appear in the Nag Hammadi Studies series. The volume provides a complete integration of Supplements I-XX to the Bibliography as published in Novum Testamentum 1971-1994, with additions and corrections. In total the update contains over 5500 entries. Nag Hammadi and Gnostic studies continue to be of critical importance for the study of ancient religions in the Graeco-Roman world and for the study of the world of early Christianity, and the present bibliography provides an indispensable reference tool for work in these fields.
