Moon Handbooks South Korea.......2007-07-26
I bought this book before a one-week trip to the university of Pohang, Korea. I was hoping to find an introduction to the country and its culture, and also some information about sightseeing in Seoul and near Pohang.
I found the background information about South Korea a bit lacking. The book begins with a historic overview of Korea and South Korea, which is probably the traditional way of beginning a travel guide, but which is not the most interesting part. There are small pieces of information about South Korean culture here, but this doesn't always agree with what I observe on the roads (e.g. about clothing -- the book sounded as if Korea was very conservative, but people dress almost in Western style), and is also incomplete (e.g. no information about whether and when and what kind of tips to give).
There is no large map of Korea describing which cities are described in what part of the book, so I had to look through all chapters to find Pohang on the maps which begin each chapter.
I didn't find the book very useful. Browsing the web, looking e.g. at the CIA facts and Wikipedia entry about Korea, was almost as informative as this book.
Great lists of things to do, but prioritizing would helpful.......2007-07-24
The South Korea Moon Handbook was a great read before we got to Korea, and a help once we decided what we had time to see. Since our stay in Korea was short (8 days), a list of "must-see" places would have been helpful.
Some wonderful places we did see are the National Museum, the Royal Palace, the Folk Village, the Buddhist temple by COEX, the National Center for the Traditional Performing Arts (a must for musicians), the "63" building , the DMZ tour through the USO (cheaper than any other option), the National War Museum, the a bamboo forest, and the island of Jeju.
anyonghasehyo..........2007-07-24
This book got me through a ton traveling. If I could go back in time, I'd still buy this and the insight guide both pre-used. This one needs more color maps. You sould forget about most of the hotels in Korean travel books. You should just stay at a yeogwan. You'll know it by the symbol of a bath with three wavey lines. P.S. While traveling always remember to unlock your credit card for every country you travel to!!!
Good information but needs to be more up-to-date!.......2007-05-08
Book is broken out nicely into sections and provides relevant information about the area attractions. The book, however, was not as up to date as it really should have been. This was my first time to South Korea and this book was a great introduction to the country and all of its parts.
too much literature.......2007-01-24
Not good for quick referencing when on the road. Not the sort of lengthy literature that one has time to read when they are looking for a good hostel and nearest transport points en-route to some far out place. The history and cultural information was good to read on long trips but I prefer to do my cultural learnings first-hand.
It did not detail some of the more essential points on disaparate and isolated locations. I found some of the views on modern cities like Seoul to be somewhat dated and missed the point slightly. Overall, it gave the impression of korea as some country stuck in medieval times with only monasteries and mountains for people to marvel at.
Book Description
You've gotta learn to defend yourself. Never let your enemy know what you are feeling.
-- The soldier assigned to protect Melba
Please, God, let me learn how to stop being a warrior. Sometimes I just need to be a girl.
-- Melba's diary, on her sixteenth birthday
In 1957 Melba Pattillo turned sixteen. That was also the year she became a warrior on the front lines of a civil rights firestorm. Following the landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board Education, she was one of nine teenagers chosen to integrate Little Rock's Central High School. This is her remarkable story.
You will listen to the cruel taunts of her schoolmates and their parents. You will run with her from the threat of a lynch mob's rope. You will share her terror as she dodges lighted sticks of dynamite, and her pain as she washes away the acid sprayed into her eyes. But most of all you will share Melba's dignity and courage as she refuses to back down.

I T CAME TO PASS.......2007-08-13
sO MUCH OUR RACE OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN THROUGH , AND THE BOOK TELLS A LOT OF THE TRIUMPHS WE WENT THROUGH, AND STILL SOME OF THOSE THINGS STILL ARE GOING ON TODAy. So the title it came to pass is the right title because god said in his word nothing but the rightous.
Repetition Galore.......2007-07-05
Melba Pattillo Beals' "Warriors Don't Cry" was amateur at best. While the purpose of the memoir is inspiring, Beals just appeared to be a broken record.
Upon reading other reviews, I thought this memoir was going to be heartbreaking and inspiring. Yet as I began to read, a pattern developed. The book dragged on and on yet there seemed to be no progression. I found myself void of emotion throughout the whole recount. Needless to say, this was a disappointment, and extremely poorly written.
Warriors Don't Cry.......2007-06-27
We are coming up on the 50th anniversary of the integration of Central High in Little Rock. This book is written by one of the courageous students who braved a racist mob to claim the equality and justice we are all promised in a democracy. The photographs of one student, Elizabeth Eckford, facing the abusive and threatening crowds became iconic, part of history and public memory. What is not as well known is what life was like for the nine students inside the school everyday. Everyday they were threatened, physically attacked, suffered abusive language and attitudes from the white, segregationist students. The author, Melba Patillo Beals, is an extraordinary writer, storyteller and she is blazingly honest. As a way of celebrating July 4th, read this book and give it to every young person over the age of 10 that you know.
"With All Deliberate Speed . . .".......2007-05-15
Melba Joy Pattillo Beals was at the heart of a vortex of history as one of the "Little Rock Nine" who integrated Arkansas' preeminent public school in 1957. In the wake of the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision, "Brown v. Board of Education," schools throughout the United States were ordered to integrate "with all deliberate speed."
Violent opposition to the integration of Central High led to the garrisoning of Little Rock by the 101st Airborne Division, the first (and thus far only) active-engagement use of Federal troops in the South since Reconstruction.
Ms. Beals (now a journalist) has a journalist's eye as she recalls her experiences at Central High that year. Drawing on her memories and on the copious and detailed diaries she kept, Ms. Beals puts us right into her well-shined saddle shoes, and right into the halls of Central.
At first glance, Melba Pattillo would have seemed to be the wrong sort of person to be on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement. At fifteen, she was a girl given to romantic daydreams, a girl seemingly perfectly content to listen to Buddy Holly on the radio while cuddling with her stuffed animal collection amidst her flouncy white comforter and matching pillows.
But deep inside, Melba Pattillo had a core of steel. Her mother held an advanced degree in Education, and her gentle, stern, and unyielding Grandmother India had an unshakeable faith both in God, and in Melba, a faith which she transmitted almost by osmosis to her granddaughter---"God's warriors don't cry, child."
If other members of Melba's family and community did not share these ideas, ideals, and values, at least they all understood that this remarkable young lady (and her eight fellow classmates) was doing something that needed to be done, something that portended a sea change in the world.
But for all the fine rhetoric, life at Central was a hell of crowded corridors, shadowy stairwells, and constant terror. From day one, avowed segregationists in the school, in the community, and in the government (including Governor Orval Faubus) tried to break the back of the integration by means foul and fouler. Adult members of Little Rock's White Citizens Council educated their charges at Central in the ways and means of torture.
Anyone stunned by the constant reports of current-day "violence in our schools" will be shattered by Ms. Beals' seemingly endless recitation of the horrors inflicted upon the Little Rock Nine in the halls of Central High. Being cursed at, spat upon, and called a "N****r" was nothing much; open threats with weapons, violent beatings and stompings, stabbings, scaldings with near-boiling hot water, dousings with unspeakable liquids, strangulations, attempts at immolation, and acid sprays in the eyes were commonplace. These were not just hurtful acts. They were often life-threatening, and the passivity (or even gleeful acquiescence) of most of the CHS school officials in the face of such ongoing abuse of these children put in their care is enough to enrage the reader.
The lack of direct adult interest in what the Little Rock Nine were going through is paralyzing to consider. Little was done to protect them, even by their supporters. The 101st was pulled out of Little Rock in a deal brokered by Beltway Bandits, and what was actually happening to the Little Rock Nine was abstract to the politicians. The price these nine black teens paid for our freedom is beyond valuation.
And if the constancy of the violence portrayed in the telling of the tale somewhat blunts the reader's emotions after a time, it is harder to feel blunted when Melba Beals talks about the wrenching changes that went on within herself. Her fame (or notoriety among segregationists) meant that her home became a fortress-prison from which she could rarely escape. Drive-by shootings and bomb threats kept most of the lifelong friends she had made among "our people" (as she calls the blacks in her community) far away, and she was not invited to parties and outings. Holidays passed without the usual gaggle of friends and relations. The sad retelling of her unattended Sweet Sixteen Party is a heartbreaking moment in time, and her sorrow still reaches across the years to touch the reader.
But there are the finer moments as well: Every day spent at Central is at the end a day of victory; her meetings with remarkable men such as Thurgood Marshall are treasured moments in her life; her gratitude to the brave men of the 101st Airborne and the task they undertook to uphold the law of the land just so a girl could go to school where she chose, is inspiring; her first few tentative friendships with some white Central High students gives us cause for hope. Melba Pattillo traded her childhood for adulthood too soon, and her innocence for a hard-honed survival instinct by force.
We live in a far different society today, and in part that is due to Melba Beals. We can thank whatever Spirit moves us that she was given the talent to write this incredible memoir. This is an essential read.
Very good book.......2007-03-30
I loved this book. It was very sad to hear about all the hardships that the 9 students had to endure to integrate Central High. I think it made them better people and I feel sorry that they had to go through those things. The description used by Melba Pattillo Beals was excellent and very useful when you were trying to get a feel for how they felt. You almost felt as if you were there with them and were going through the same things. I would definetly recommend this book to other readers. I would avise that the reader be a little bit older so that they can understand the things that the blacks were going through. Other than being a harsh book because of the things that needed to be describe it was an amazing book.

Recommended for public and grade school library collections........2006-11-06
Written by Stephanie Fitzgerald, The Little Rock Nine: Struggle for Integration is a historical accounting for young adults about the integration of the all-white Central High School of Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. The pioneering efforts of the students would open the way to greater equality in America's educational system, and show the power of freedom to all Americans. Black-and-white vintage photographs illustrate the straightforward narration of a vital turning point in history. Recommended for public and grade school library collections.

The book is a history book, about the Little Rock Nine. I only read the first 3 chapters (which I may add were full with facts for my research paper), but they were good. Factual. :)

arkansas history for young people.......2007-05-22
excellent background history of Arkansas. It is directed and elementary children, but is entertaing and informative with alot of good pictures. I would have liked a little more specifics on the american native people. Particularly their names, as I have toured Arkansas and ther are alot of memorials to specific people such a Sarricin or Saracen in Pine bluff. Also, arkasas was pivito durin the wartime for WW2.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful though not exhaustive.......2001-11-12
This is the first book I've found that specializes in growing from seed. It gives some good advice on equipment, and some good insights into procedure. It is published by Burpee and somewhat biased toward Burpee products. A few of the charts in the appendix are indespensible -- such as first- and last-frost dates by city, and recommended seed-starting and planting times for vegetables. Unfortunately there is not also such a list for flowers and seed-fruit, but it is a good starting place. It should also be noted that 155 of the books 256 pages are spent on a plant-by-plant index that provides information similar to that provided in other garden books, only scewed slightly towards growing from seed. So less than half the book is really focused on seed-starting.

First comes Sunset's Western Garden Book and then comes this Burpee seed book - ever wonder how come those Dogwood never seem to germinate - or how come Trillium, despite your twenty years of trying, just seem to lie there mocking you? This book explains all those arcane secrets that seem to defy any logic you can come up with.

Book Description
"Drop a word in the ocean of meaning and concentric ripples form. To define a single word means to try to catch those ripples. No one’s hands are fast enough." With this concise and broadly informative essay, renowned poet, typographer and linguist Robert Bringhurst presents a brief history of writing and a new way of classifying and understanding the relationship between script and meaning.
Beginning with the original relationship between a language and its written script, Bringhurst takes us on a history of reading and writing that begins with the interpretation of animal tracks and fast-forwards up to the typographical abundance of more recent times. The first four sections of the essay describe the earliest creation of scripts, their movement across the globe and the typographic developments within and across languages.
In the fifth and final section of the essay, Bringhurst introduces his system of classifying scripts. Placing four established categories of written language – semographic, syllabic, alphabetic and prosodic – on a wheel adjacent to one another, he uses the location, size and shape of points on the wheel to show the degree to which individual world languages incorporate these aspects of recorded meaning. Bringhurst’s system is based on an appreciation that indeed no one’s hands are fast enough and that no single script adheres to or can be understood within the confines of a single method of transcription.
Readers will find this combination of anthropology, typography, literature, mathematics, music and linguistics surprisingly accessible and thought provoking. The text is accompanied by diagrams and typographic examples that make for an experiential study of the relationship between writing and meaning.
This book is a Smyth-sewn paperback with a letterpress printed jacket. The book was designed by Robert Bringhurst and Andrew Steeves, and printed on Zephyr Laid paper. The cover was hand-printed letterpress on St. Armand handmade paper.

A new way of thinking typeforms.......2005-11-09
The Solid Form of Language, helps me to know about how connected is the way we write with the way we think. How connected are the social, religious and political issues with the graphic way of our language. Typography is not only the visible form of our words, but the way "someone" decided how we have to articulate the sound of our thoughts and desires.
It is an excellent research of the history of the graphic form of language of almost the entire world.
I think every type-educator, type researcher or type fan has to read it.
Poetry and Typography.......2005-09-03
Typographically beautiful, lovely letterpress wrapper, Robert Bringhurst fans will definitely want to acquire this underpriced gem. Also highly recommended for fans of poetry, language and languages/linguistics.

Book Description
Although much has been written about the "golden days of radio," Entrepreneurs of Profit and Pride is the first book to examine the black radio industry. This book traces the development of black radio programming which began when the concept of "black appeal" first occured to certain entrepreneurs, a concept that played a pivotal role in the rise of cultural pride and "soul." Through the case studies of three representative black radio stations, Newman reveals the evolution of programming practices dictated not only by pride but by profits gained through successful marketing. A unique feature of this book is the inclusion of business considerations into a cultural analysis of the medium. The book begins with a discussion of how poor communications to black audiences in early network broadcasting led to the creation of black-appeal narrowcasting. The author probes the patterns of development in black programming and assesses the impact of that programming on soul consciousness. In addition, the book discusses individuals in the history of black radio, marketing to a minority audience, and the role of media in society as a seller of products and culture.
