5 out of 5 stars The best Arizona guidebook since, well, forever?.......2007-02-19

I've been relying on Bill Weir's Moon guide since it first came out in 1986. I still have a first edition in storage somewhere (I think). These comments apply to the 9th edition, published in early 2005 -- which means a 10th edition is likely in preparation as I write this review.

In addition to the 9th ed., I have in front of me the 6th ed. of 1996. It's interesting to compare the two. The older book is a "svelte" 488 pages; the new one weighs in at a hefty 650 pp., and is a bit larger-format, too. The newer book has, well, more stuff, better paper (less show-through), better maps, but doesn't appear as sturdily-bound as the older one, and lacks the nice rounded corners.

I've lived in Arizona for 30 years, but always learn something new thumbing through Weir's guide. About the only weakness is the occasional dodgy restaurant review -- and in fairness, these are 2-3 year old reviews.

If you live in Arizona, or plan to travel here, you need this guidebook. So, what are you waiting for?

OK, you can wait for the 10th ed. if you live here. Others, grit your teeth, fork over your 15 bucks. Money well-spent: half a tank of gas, a cheap restaurant meal....

            Happy travelling--

We have purchased about 7 Moon Books with Arizona being the latest purchase. Good refernce books---up to date and easy to read. We find them better than the AAA Tour Books. A fair price. Needs to be kept up to date with changes occurring so often,it is a good idea to check the "published date"

5 out of 5 stars The best Arizona guide out there.......2005-01-19

For anyone planning to visit Arizona, this is definitely the best guide you can bring with you. Although I wish it had more photos give a clue as to what you'll be seeing, the excellent maps, detailed descriptions, and sheer volume of information provided more than makes up for it. I had only a few days in Arizona and didn't have time to waste, so it was important that I find the best places to see while I was there. This book proved to be absolutely vital for my trip. Without it I would never have found many of the interesting sights that I visited. In short, don't go to Arizona without this book.

4 out of 5 stars Hot spots in AZ.......2004-07-17

I recently moved to AZ and knew no one out here and very little about what there was to do. This book is chuck full of fun things to do by region in AZ. It also guides you to great camping spots, hiking trails, even the best places to grab a bite to eat. The only negative about this book is that it does not provide good information on how to get to these great places. Not much in a way of maps. But,other than that, this book is definately worth buying!

            5 out of 5 stars Best All-Around Arizona Guidebook.......2001-10-05

Recently my wife and I planned a trip to Eastern Arizona. We got copies of all the available guidebooks to Arizona and began going through them for information. It soon became clear that Bill Weir's book had by far the most information. He has been everywhere. The book is well-written, authoritative without being pedantic, and is nicely laid out so that it is easy to use. We especially appreciate his coverage of hiking trails.

When we use an Arizona guidebook the first thing we do is crack it open to its section on Flagstaff, where we live. When we did this, we found that the book passed the acid test. This is the best book of its kind, and the one that we will use from now on.

            5 out of 5 stars B.C. Handbook.......2006-07-18

Excellent book for travel to BC. We have used other Moon Books on travel and have been very pleased with all of them

            5 out of 5 stars A Great Help.......2004-01-14

This was the first of the Moon books I'd ever used and I was very impressed. There was a ton of useful information on general Canadian travel, but the bulk of the book is devoted to the various regions and the best of what there is to see and do. In places like Vancouver, where there are lots of museums, he discusses these; on Vancouver Island he tells all you'll need to know about water activities; in the Okanagan Valley he chooses his favorite wineries, etc. I'd been to BC previously, but visited a few great spots that I wouldn't have found without this book. The author concentrates on 3 or 4 places to stay and a similiar number of restaurants in each town and he has obviously done his research well as I couldn't find fault with the recommendations that cover all price ranges.

Also importantly, the book is very well organized and the maps were very helpful. I also liked the thorough bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite guidebook for British Columbia.......2002-06-24

I know of no better book to my home province of British Columbia than this Moon guide. On my travels as a semi-retired geologist, I also carry copies of the Lonely Planet and Frommer's book and have reviewed both of them and others at Amazon.com, but Moon Handbooks British Columbia stands alone for its usefulness. The other books have their good points, but this one encapsulates everything one needs to enjoy the wonders of the province, whether it's their first trip or they live here. It covers every single corner of BC and is thorough and up to date.

The Moon guide is cleverly written and arranged to appeal to all budgets. The bulk of the text relates to towns and parks of BC, with informative coverage of everything from museums to fishing opportunities and wildlife viewing. Each section ends with details of the best places to stay and recommendations for dining. If you're camping out or RVing I'd suggest also getting a campground guide, but the Moon book suggests at least one campground in each town, each of which the author has obviously visited. Motels are also detailed, and over previous editions I'm yet to find fault with the author's choices. Ditto for bed and breakfasts and restaurants.

In my opinion, thois is definitely the best allround guidebook for British Columbia

4 out of 5 stars Great, but previous edition better........2002-06-01

This is indeed a terrific guidebook for B.C. Previous editions, however, included Banff and Jasper National Parks, which admittedly are in Alberta, not B.C., but are usually included in Canadian Rockies travel itineraries. There's no excuse including Yoho (which is just over the border) but not Banff and Jasper, except to sell more books. So this is not an improvement.

5 out of 5 stars Moon Handbooks rule!.......2001-09-27

I've used Moon Handbooks for years and they are simply the best! I have the Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Alberta, and now the British Columbia book, and I've never been disappointed. These books include the usual stuff, such as lodging, restaurants, and recreation, but they also include local history and cultural information that makes them far superior to most guides. Buy a Moon Handbook that covers the state you live in--you will be surprised at how much you can learn. If you're going traveling, they are indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Planner for a Canadian Rockies Vacation.......2005-09-29

Moon Travel's "Canadian Rockies Handbook" is packed with the practical information needed to plan a great vacation in the Canadian Rockies. In a well-organized format, the handbook covers how to get there, what to see and do, where to stay, and a nice slice of commentary on the various towns and other sites of interest. The discussion about accomodations includes a decent range of prices and facilities. The focus is on the area in and around Banff and Jasper National Parks, a stunningly beautiful area with endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, sight-seeing, and relaxation. The handbook includes maps and diagram that are sufficiently detailed to enable to visitors to get to the main points of interest. The handbook also provides information on popular hikes, golfing, and white water rafting, among other activities.
This handbook is highly recommended to anyone planning a vacation in the Canadian Rockies, even if they have visited the Rockies before. This handbook provides enough detail in a compact format that it may inform regular visitors on wonders they may have missed on prior trips.

We spent a week in the Canadian Rockies, using this book as our guide. The book gives excellent recommendations for accomodations and activities - we did not go wrong following them. It gives more information that is beyond the basic, "usual", details. It also includes descriptions of many hikes, from 1-hour hikes to full-day hikes, as well as description of road-accessible sites for the non-hikers.

Sorry to see it was out of print - was looking it up so I could buy another copy.
Lightweight, so travels well, has very good info on most everything u could want to see, including Banff/Jasper Nat'l parks, (even though they are in Alberta Province).
              Reasonably well arranged.

Get this book, and if you want to know everything there is to know about Canadian Rocky Mountain flora and fauna, add Ben Gadd's book "Handbook of the Canadian Rockies" (a considerably heavier book, due to color plates) and you won't need anything else but a map.

                  Book Description

Brightly colored Stangl Pottery earthenware bird figurines were made in New Jersey from the 1940s into the 1970s. The very similar Pennsbury birds were hatched in Pennsylvania during the 1950s by former Stangl employees. Today both companies' wares are eagerly sought by collectors in all parts of the country. In this first book of its kind, Mike Schneider shows the entire Stangle Birds of America series plus 60 examples of Pennsbury birds in beautiful individual color photos. There is also a chapter on the little known but highly desirable Stangl animal figures. This user-friendly book, in which the Stangl birds are listed by the model number, also includes an alphabetically arranged name index for complete and easy cross referencing and close up photos of marks. A price guide based on the current market makes this beautiful volume an invaluable tool for collectors and dealers.

Excellent book. Wonderful pictures, almost the entire collection is pictured. Information is clear and precise. Prices are higher than what today's economy can support but that seems to be the way with all price guides. I highly recommend all of Mr. Schneider's books, they're very well written, pictures are clear, price guides are realistic and they're extremely user friendly.

                  Book Description

"When you read this book, remember that you're not just reading one man's story. Kurt, by virtue of his unique connections to the artistic community, speaks with a rare authority about taking risks for your art, investing in your own aspirations, and expanding your artistic horizons. Kurt's view of the events of his life are all interpreted by their proximity to his art. In that regard, this book represents a rare opportunity indeed." - From the introduction by Cole Weston

Art in Residence features portraits of eighty influential West Coast artists, including Ansel Adams, Cole Weston, Eleanor Antin, Jock Sturges, Robert Arneson, Judy Chicago, and more. Each portrait captures the subject in his or her work space and is accompanied by a brief statement from the artist. The photographs are more than stunning portraits—the intense intimacy of Fishback's style, as well as his personal relationships with his subjects, make each one an eloquent visual biography.

Fishback's style is influenced by his past work as a sculptor; the work of his father, photographer Glen Fishback; and by his close personal and artistic relationships with Edward Weston and Ansel Adams.

This book is both very beautiful and informative. Kurt's images allow you to really see the artist and the surroundings that help them create their work. Kurt looks at both their outer body and their inner soul.

I highly recommend this book for any person who loves both Art and Photography

5 out of 5 stars Artists in Their Environment.......2000-07-14

I met Kurt about 5 years ago. He was teaching a class at The Workshops in Rockport, Maine. I was immediately impressed with Kurt's work and his uncanny ability to capture the essence of his subject at the defining moment. Kurt's vision is timeless, and this work demonstrates his ability to make powerful images with only Tri-X and available light. This is an excellent book for the serious amateur photographer who wants to refine his own photographic vision. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars "Art in Residence: West Coast Artists in Their Space".......2000-07-14

I have been one of Kurt Edward Fishback's students for the past year and have been looking forward to the publication of this book. It is truly an extraordinary and prodiqious work and should be of interest to everyone. It makes artists accessable to the public. Lonnie

The author L. Gourse was shameful, utterly careless in her dealing and research of the gem that is Carmen!

What demons dwelled in residence within this author that she should have chosen so wretched a photograph to depict the jewel that was Carmen? Her depiction of the "Gem" Carmen was ghastly, not to mention downright hasty, shameful.

I hope she will know that when her turn comes, the same carelessness will accompany any rememberances of her as a 'so-called' biographer. Startling details and conclusions were boldly brought forth, but sadly, it fizzes away with lack of evidence or any weighty proofs. Shameful is all I say and careless trivialities concerning her subject, for "subject" is all that our jewel Carmen was to this author, not merely a human being. Carmen deserves better!

2 out of 5 stars Typical Leslie Gourse Book.......2002-08-21

What a missed opportunity! There are not many books written about wonderful Carmen Mc Rae and Gourse could finally writte something interesting about this underrated singer but unfortunately Gourse know only how to collect previously published articles and squeeze them together as "book" - I read most of her "books" and its always the same dry story, wonder why she never uses her own talent (if she have any,her book "Louis' Children is the only one interesting - but then, its collection of short profiles written as a journalism,so perhaps thats what Gourse knows how to do) to make her writting a bit more substantial,a bit more than just a articles-collection.I imagine Gourse to spend evenings at library where those articles can be collected and then just splash them together carelessly in some sort of chronological order - who cares for recording dates when at the end nothing was really said about Carmen Mc Rae? I love Mc Rae dearly and feel her sensitivity behind those defensive walls she built around her, what a shame Gourse did her usual quick job and did not used the opportunity for some insight into life of this enigmatic woman! The only good thing about this book is that all the previously published informations about Mc Rae are collected here in one thin volume, hopefully somebody will came along to writte more researched and detailed biography! And the picture on the cover is SO ugly - with Mc Rae glamourous looks and so many other, better photos inside of the book I wonder why was this unflattering picture choosen for a cover?

1 out of 5 stars Needs knowledge of subject.......2002-04-03

The woman cannot spell, but not only does she have great trouble with the language, she seems clueless when it comes to her subject. She has assembled numerous books, none of any substance, and this alleged biography of Carmen McRae is so full of factual errors that it is almost laughable.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for jazz music fans.......2001-08-16

Leslie Gourse's Carmen Mcrae, Miss Jazz tells of the life of a jazz singer who grew up during the swing era in Harlem to make her mark on the music world at the ripe 'old' age of 34. This is based on interviews conducted by McRae before her death as well as added insights by her friends, family and fellow musicians. Recommended for jazz music fans.

                      1 out of 5 stars Very Sad.......2001-07-27

Ms. Gourse's biography does not, in my opinion, do justice to this legandary jazz artist. I was hoping for some improvement over her biography on Sarah Vaughan, however, my opinion is that Ms. Gourse's Carmen McRae bio takes her down a few more notches as a biographer/writer. I almost got the feeling that it was slapped together quickly due to publishing deadlines or a general lack of interest in the subject.
