Book Description
This Bradt guide has become the definitive source of information on this country rich in culture, history, and dramatic scenery. For first-time visitors, Philip Briggs supplies plenty of practical advice on how to bridge the cultural gap and plan a trouble-free trip. Heritage hotspots in a land thought to be the cradle of civilization and resting place of the Ark of the Covenant include the architecturally fascinating rock-hewn church of Lalibela, the unofficial eighth wonder of the world, and ancient palaces and staelae at Axum. Ethiopia boasts nine national parks and several wildlife sanctuaries, all of which are detailed in Philip Briggs's comprehensive text.
This guide features:
>Where to find some of East Africa's rarest wildlife, including the Simien wolf, walia ibex, and gelada baboon
>Ethiopia's national parks and wildlife sanctuaries
>Traveling the Northern Historic Circuit
>Addis Ababa in detail: where to stay, eat, and drink, plus nearby sightseeing
Customer Reviews:
very thorough.......2007-10-17
A lot of detail. Have not read too much yet. We will be traveling to Ehiopia in early 2008 to pick up our adopted son. Plan to read much more before the trip. Wish there were a few more photos.
Best guide book for any country, period.......2007-10-09
The Bradt guide to Ethiopia is hands down the best guide book I have ever used for any country, and I own a lot of guide books. Briggs has a really engaging way of writing and I read the guide book like I would a novel. There are a few times during our trip when I quibbled with his description of the quality of a hotel, but by the time the trip was over, I agreed with him (ie, hotel quality is very much a matter of relativity in Ethiopia). I am only half joking when I say that we are choosing our next African country to visit based on whether Briggs has written a guide book for it.
Ethiopia Travel Guide.......2007-07-08
Because I am planning a trip to Ethiopia this fall, I have been looking for travel and historical information on the country with little success. The Bradt Travel Guide, Edition 4, on Ethiopia was a welcome find. It is thorough, factual, and even has a few color pictures of important sites and fauna of the country. The chapter on culture and history and was just what I was looking for to give me background information before my visit. The three specific areas to which I will be traveling - Addis Ababa, Axum and Lalibela were thoroughly discussed.
the best..........2007-03-14
I spent a month traveling throughout northern Ethiopia in July 2006 and cannot emphasize enough how helpful this book (UK edition) was for me. I ended up hooking up with another traveler who had the lonely planet for Ethiopia and Eritrea and the two were no comparison in terms of historical and cultural background and practicality. This was my first time using a Bradt guide, so I'm not sure if it was just a function of Philip Briggs' writing (informative, humorous, and down-to-earth) or indicative of the whole line, but I cannot recommend this book enough if you are planning on visiting Ethiopia.
My compliments to Philip Briggs.......2007-02-27
Not only his Ethiopia guidebook is the best I have used in the last ten years (reliable, well informed, and so well written that reading it is a pleasure) but also Philip is very helpful and eager to solve any doubt or problem: he always replied immediatly and with great courtesy and competence to my many questions about Ethiopia.
Highly recommended.
Customer Reviews:
Great book - BUT - Not really for smaller kids.......2007-03-16
We really liked the "You Wouldn't Want To Be..." series so we bought this book (and the Columbus one). Although the information in here is very interesting, I don't think it is appropriate for smaller kids as there are a number of pictures of pirates being hung or corpses in crow's cages, and the like. Remember, all the information in here is real life - not just cutesy stories - so if your child is easily freightened by graphic (although comic-style) pictures, try something else.
A very fun and exciting history lesson.......2003-08-10
This book was very interesting. It showed what might happen to you if you were captured by Pirates. I thought it was very realistic, and it was so exciting you didn't know you were really learning. I would read it again and again. But I thought it was a little easy to read, and too short. But overall I liked it...

Judy Garland: The Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Legend
ASIN: 0764307649 |
Book Description
Judy Garland is a true Hollywood icon. A legend. Her remarkable 45-year career in show business began at the age of two, when she performed on stage as the diminutive member of the singing trio the Gumm Sisters. By the age of thirteen, she was under contract to MGM, and her extraordinary fifteen-year association with the studio provided moviegoers with memorable performances in classic motion pictures such as The Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Easter Parade. In the late 1930s, merchandise bearing her name and likeness began to fill department store shelves throughout the country. With over five hundred illustrations, this book explores all areas of the Garland merchandising phenomenon. It provides readers with a nostalgic, photographic reference guide to the vast array of collectibles, plus a biography exploring Judy's early childhood and rise to stardom, and a complete motion picture chronology, discography, home video library, and portrait gallery. This unique volume delivers a comprehensive identification and price guide for collectors of movie posters, movie memorabilia, Wizard of Oz collectibles, dolls, records, and sheet music.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Judy Garland Reference Book!.......2000-08-07
The Judy Garland Collector's Guide is a great book, especially for people who are just starting to collect Garland items. It has photographs of a good range of items from those that the beginner can easily obtain, to items such as original movie costumes, posters, and autographs for the more serious collector. This book, in my opinion, is better described as a reference guide rather than a price guide. If you are looking for exact prices for items, you won't find them here. Prices are set up in groups (Ex: $25 - $65). A few items do not have prices at all. Still, it is filled with both color and black & white photographs of memorabilia such as Wizard of Oz items, a wristwatch, writing tablets, sheet music, lobby cards, and includes a nice portrait gallery. I would recommend it to any Judy Garland or movie memorabilia collector!

Customer Reviews:
Necessary resource for Central CA gardeners.......1998-08-25
A must for nursery-hopping gardeners in the San Francisco Bay Area. Extensive listings of a diverse slew of nurseries (and related businesses), garden clubs, classes and other resources is well- (and amusingly-) written. Sidebars throughout the book hold forth on various gardening issues: natives versus lawns, why to use botanical names, the egregious chopping that passes for pruning done by street tree crews, and so forth. Well worth the paltry asking price.

Needs to be reprinted.......2000-01-18
Excellent resource for professional typographers trying to identify a typeface. Definitely needed in any competent print shop.
We need this book reissued.......1999-12-21
This book was highly recommended by the instructor of a typography class I'm taking - and it's out of print. Please encourage its update and reprinting soon!
Invaluable, necessary, why not re-issue?.......1999-04-13
As a design student, I need this book. I've been looking for it for 2 months. Being able to identify typefaces by their distinguishing characteristics is a valuable resource in the decision making process. My instructor had a copy, that's how I know about it. Is there any way we could get; a) Christopher Perfect to re-edit and update the book, or b) get the publishing house to re-issue it?
A One of a Kind Type of Book.......1998-02-05
This book allows you to determine what typeface was used to print a book, magazine, etc. By systematically identifying the characteristics of a typeface you can determine what style it is (Venetian serif, Old Style Serif, etc.).Then by examining specific characteristics of certain letters you can determine the exact font. This is the only book of its kind that I know of. Unfortunately since it hasn't been reprinted for a while some of the newer typefaces are not listed. Buy it if you can find a copy.
A unique resource text.......1997-12-20
I am a professional typesetter and use this book to find types and their names. I don't know how I could function without it.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding educational and professional tool.......2006-01-14
As a graphic designer working with fonts all day every day, I have a library of several hundred reference books about type. I use Rookledge's more than all the others put together. The authors have devised a method of classifying fonts that facilitates two important tasks: First, identifying a font from an incomplete sample. Rookledge's shows you at a glance which characters are unique to a given font. Second: choosing a font that has the right "feel" or emotional content for a particular text.
A third thing to love about this book: the authors don't waste page space on stupid fonts. With somewhere in excess of 20,000 fonts in circulation now, there are still just a few dozen timeless classics and a few hundred more that are worthy of serious study. There are a few that I would like to have seen included that aren't, but precious few.
Anyone working to push the printed word to the limits of its expressive power will find this book invaluable.
Only slightly better?.......2005-10-28
I purchased the 1st ed. of this book years ago. I still find it invaluable. I thought the reprint would find more content and an updated design. While there is slightly more content, I think that the poor quality sample typography scans (assumedly from the original book) cause me to wonder if I should just keep using my original edition. It appears that even the linework and sample names have been rescanned.
I do like the updated cover design, front matter and dividers. I also enjoyed the preface by Frutiger, but I really wish more time had been spent with newly set samples.

Book Description
Rev. Foy has put to together a extremely overdue and enlightening book, that in the publishers humble opinion, should be in every home, library, and school in this country!
The material in this book is simply astounding and many of these discoveries have not been attributable to Blacks. In fact, during these times, Blacks could not have their names listed on the patents for their own inventions. But other records were kept nevertheless. Now, Mr. Foy has extensively documented historical findings factually showing patented inventions created by people of African heritage that today, we take as modern conveniences.
