Customer Reviews:
Brilliant!.......2005-07-24
I bought this guide well in advance of a recent family trip to the 'old country' (as my Nana called it) kind of as a joke - but I'm really glad I did. It has everything from packing tips (if you don't have enough room for souvenirs, mail your dirty laundry home - what a hoot!) to budgeting worksheets and maps included. We bought the Explorer pass as recommended and had a blast. We purchased more detailed maps there as well, but as far as planning the trip out, this book is the cats pajamas. I like how it is broken down by region, it makes it super easy to plan a day or two ahead. Before I take another trip like this, I'll check for a 'dummies' book.
Never left the hotel without it!.......2005-01-10
I purchased 3 books prior to my first trip to Scotland in November, 2004. I actually purchased Scotland for Dummies to be funny! My family was hysterical when I showed them my purchase. However, once we got there, the laughter was replaced with "where's the Dummies book?" We truly didn't go anywhere without it. (Although, to avoid being spotted as a "tourist", they made me hide it. :) ) The maps were SO helpful. We did purchase a road map once there, but used it along with this book. The information about tourist attractions was invaluable. Where to find restaurants and which ones to avoid was great. Once in Scotland, I never touched the other two books purchased. If you're only going to buy one book, this is the one. Read the others at the library before you go.
anyone can do this!.......2004-06-29
I traveled to Scotland with a friend(who happens to be an experienced traveler; and i'm not!) in the summer of 1997. Deb planned everything and i coughed up the money and was just along for the ride. Which by the way, was most exceedingly pleasant! I recently purchased this book as I am planning a return trip with my sister in the summer of 2005. Reading this book was like experiencing the '97 trip all over again! Any advice given in this book should be well heeded; it absolutely does not steer you wrong. From "what to pack" to "where to eat" this read has instilled in me the confidence that i can do this trip without being led by the hand of a more seasoned traveler. I will be packing a couple of different maps but this will be the only tour book i pack!
great summary for a first-time visitor with limited time.......2004-06-19
I visited Scotland in November 2003, and I found this book to be extremely useful. The book layout is clear and easy to read. The "top 10 lists" really help in deciding what to see. No extraneous photographs or excessive historical backgrounds. The book has very good general travel tips as well. The author doesn't assume you know everything about traveling to the UK. One suggestion: if touring Glasow or Edinburgh on foot or by car, buy a good city map. The city maps in the guide don't quite cut the mustard.
A Must Read.......2004-03-11
While I have not gone to Scotland yet to put all the wonderful information into practice, this is a wonderful book! I found it very easy to read, it gave all kinds of websites to visit, and the overviews were very interesting. I felt like I could plan my whole trip just from this book.
I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Honor Book for the Society of School Librarians International’s Best Book Award – Social Studies, Grades 7-12
Winner of 2005 Children’s Nautilus Book Awards (Non-fiction)
Prior to abolition in 1865, as many as 40,000 men, women, and children made the perilous trip north to freedom in Canada with the help of the Underground Railroad. It was neither underground nor was it a railroad, and was most remarkable for its lack of formal organization, so cloaked in secrecy that few facts were recorded while it “ran.”
The story of the Underground Railroad is one of suffering and of bravery, and is not only one of escape from slavery but of beginnings: of people who carved out a new life for themselves in perilous, difficult circumstances. In I Came as a Stranger, Bryan Prince, a descendent of slaves, describes the people who made their way to Canada and the life that awaited them.
From Uncle Tom’s Cabin in Dresden, Ontario to Harriet Tubman’s Canadian base of operations in St. Catharines, the communities founded by former slaves soon produced businessmen, educators, and writers. Yet danger was present in the form of bounty hunters and prejudice.
Complemented by archival photos, I Came as a Stranger is an important addition to North American history.
Customer Reviews:
An uplifting read for young readers of all ages.......2004-06-12
Highly recommended, Bryan Prince's I Came As A Stranger: The Underground Railroad is a fascinating history and site guide to the American Underground Railroad, a pre-Civil War secret organization of conspirators who risked life and freedom to help fugitive slaves make the perilous journey to the freedom in Canada. Black-and-white illustrations, and compelling testimony make I Came As A Stranger an educational and uplifting read for young readers of all ages.
A Must Have.......2004-03-04
Very seldom do we get the opportunity to read history from the voices of those that lived it and, the persons who are descendants of those who lived it. In this amazing volume, you have both. Bryan Prince is not only a consumate historian, he is a descendant of the fugitives who made it to freedom and settled in Southern Ontario. While intended for young adults, older readers, especially from the U.S. will have the opportunity to learn "the rest of the story" of the Underground Railroad.

Book Description
Formerly India's most corrupt tourist guide, Rajujust released from prisonseeks refuge in an abandoned temple. Mistaken for a holy man, he plays the part and succeeds so well that God himself intervenes to put Raju's newfound sanctity to the test. Narayan's most celebrated novel, The Guide won him the National Prize of the Indian Literary Academy, his country's highest literary honor.
Customer Reviews:
Are we creators or merely reactors?.......2007-10-15
N.K. Narayan's The Guide, for which he won the National Prize of the Indian Literary Academy, his country's highest literary honor, is a deep yet wryly humorous examination of the frailties of humans and the meaning and consequences of our actions. The main question seems to be, "Are we creators of our own destinies, or are we mere reactors to the people and circumstances which surround us? And, furthermore, does it really matter, in the end, why we do what we do? Or is the final result the only thing that matters?" What more important inquiry can there be? An entire philosopy course could be taught using this wonderful book as the basis.
A Saint Despite Himself.......2007-03-23
I am in complete agreement with G. Young's review. In essence, the book is an account of the spiritual journey of a man who becomes a saint despite himself, written with humor, compassion and consummate skill. My favorite book by my favorite author.
A tale of rural India that fails to capture the imagination.......2006-10-31
Narayan does an excellent job of depicting rural life in India, in all social classes, in the mid-twentieth century, and this tale of an engaging but flawed protagonist whose life takes unusual turns is reasonably readable.
However, the narrative style seems slow and oddly detached. Perhaps Narayan wanted it to be plain, straightforward, and hypnotic. But it comes across as simplistic and even a bit superficial.
The ending is dramatic and is one point in which Narayan's narrative strategy succeeds. But much of the book could have been told in a much more sprightly and nuanced manner.
Guide for your spiritual journey .......2006-05-10
Caveat- if you have watched the Hindi film Guide by Dev Anand and think you already know enough about the book, you are wrong! The author hiself was almost disgusted with the film.
Book is sublime. Raju the guide is very ordinary person but his story shows us how extra-ordinary one's life can become. Indeed it is one. One has to just discover it.
a very funny tragedy.......2005-11-03
This book is a first-person account of a charmingly neurotic character, whose materialism, protectiveness, and dishonesty lead him to success as often as they get him into trouble. His fortunes rise and fall as a shopkeeper, a tour guide, a lover, and ultimately an unwilling saint. He even finds success and happiness in prison, where his charisma leads him to build many friendships amongst fellow prisoners and security staff alike.
This book successfully treads the narrow space between tragedy and comedy, bringing lightness to an otherwise heavy theme.

Book Description
Bharata Natyam is currently one of the most popular styles of classical dances in India. In the course of its transition from performance in temples and courts to the concert stage, the making of modern Bharata Natyam has passed from the purview of traditional/hereditary families, and dancers into the hands of the educated elite. What changes have been brought about in presentation and style as a result of this transition? How much of current practice is an invention of the past fifty years? These and other questions on the fascinating history of the creation of Bharata Natyam are dealt with by Anne-Marie Gaston who provides extensive oral testimony of current perceptions and directions of Bharata Natya.
Customer Reviews:
Gaston gives great insight.......2001-10-11
This book is one of my most well-loved non-fiction books. It is written by a woman who both understands the dance and is able to explain it to outsiders. I got this book when I was just starting to learn dance, and it's given me an invaluable perspective on the origins and meaning of Bharata Natyam. The ancient history of temple dance is fairly small, but the 19th and 20th century information is both copious and vivid. She also does a great job in explaining the components of a formal recital, and other parts of the dance form.
Book Description
One of the most popular and widely performed dance styles in India and around the world, bharata natyam has made the transition from its beginnings in the temples and courts of southern India to a highly respected international phenomenon. In this study of a classical dance form, author Janet O'Shea tracks the choreographic transformations that accompanied the transfer of bharata natyam to the urban concert stage in the 1930s and 1940s. At Home in the World situates these changes within the political debates of their time, and further ties the concerns of this period to present-day practice. The history of this dance is also a history of India itself, and readers can trace various national struggles over gender identity, regionalism, and globalism through O'Shea's narrative. With over 250 teachers in the United States alone, bharata natyam offers a remarkable case study of how a traditional art form moves into the world.
Customer Reviews:
The fascinating true story of the classical dance form of Bharata Natyam. .......2007-08-07
Dancer and award-winning dance history scholar Janet O'Shea presents At Home in the World: Bharata Natyam on the Global Stage, the fascinating true story of the classical dance form of Bharata Natyam. Widely performed in India and around the world Bharata Natyam underwent choreographic transformations as it moved to the urban concert stage in the 1930s and 40s. Examining these changes in the political context of the time, and comparing them to modifications in present-day Bharata Natyam performance, At Home in the World effectively traces the evolution of this beautiful art form, now known to have over 250 teachers in the United States alone. A handful of black-and-white photographs, a glossary, list of references, and an index round out this in-depth study of how a traditional form of art can blossom into global expression.
eloquent, meaningful and sometimes beyond the perception of the viewer.......2007-08-04
Dance from India is eloquent, meaningful and sometimes beyond the perception of the viewer. A book of this magnitude is capable of explaining the nuances of these cultural dance forms in both gross and minute detail. One particular style was performed by temple initiates, known as devadasi, and while it is a peculiarly female arena, there are men who dance it today who are lauded for their ability. This sacred art form hit the concert stage in the '30s and '40s.
These temple dances are discussed in detail, as well as contemporary works that take various events and bring them to the stage. One example is "Unable to Remember Roop Kanwar." Roop Kanwar was an eighteen year old woman who was condemned to die on her deceased husband's funeral pyre, as tradition commanded in modern day 1987. While the practice of "widow immolation" may be unique to a given area, the core issue is domestic violence. This is one example of the performances that weld national issues on a global perspective.
The book explains classical and modern dance pieces in great detail. Body position, mudras (hand positions), lighting and other components are reviewed and explained. Because this dance style is so heavily nuanced, there are footnotes, appendices, references, a glossary and an amazing index to help explain detail within detail. The black and white photography may not show the detail of costumes and makeup, but they serve the dramatic aspect much better. One promotional photo of Ana Pavlova (choreographer/ballerina) for her 1923 Hindoo Dance, is especially stunning.
The upside of this book is how well it captures Bharata Natyam. Even the more "casual" student of India's dances will find something of value to bring to their dance interpretations. If you know nothing of Bharata Natyam, you will be given an education that may be overwhelming. It is a true study and evaluation of the art form and leaves the reader feeling inundated with information.

Indian Classical Dance: Tradition in Transition
ASIN: 818502636X |
Book Description
Bharata Natyam, the most popular classical Indian dance-form, has received universal approbation as one of the subtlest expressions of Indian culture. It is performed according to the most delicate nuances of a musical piece, or a poem, through the vehicle of a body. Its intimate connection with the temple, as a ritualistic art, mirroring the imperceptible feelings of a devotee reflects the inwardness of Hindu culture. The present revised edition captures the rhythms and beauty of an integral art in a visually exciting and fascinating manner. This volume also contains an overview of the legendary and present-day exponents of Bharata Natyam. With contributions from Mulk Raj Anand, Rukmini Devi, Padma Subrahmanyam, and P. Sambamurthy.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent intro for a beginner.......2004-10-13
The book is very well-written, and gives lots of explanations on a host of topics that are likely to baffle any foreigner trying to start her Bharata Natyam classes.
Most of the pictures quality is very good, although I would have appreciated it if there were provided any references to what major styles of Bharata Natyam a particular picture represents. True, it would be valuable for the advanced learners of Bharata Natyam, but would confuse the beginners.
The author should remember that a still picture is not as adequate illustration for a dance book as a complimentary DVD (like the ones by Medha Hari) would be. Maybe the next edition would include one? It would be a perfect combination!
All in all, the book is a perfect gift, and a fantastic cofee-table book. Definitely worth the money.
A gift for all Bharatanatyam lovers.......2002-03-15
Sunil Kothari is an outstanding scholar in the realm of dance. And this book is a precious gift that has been written for anyone passionate about their art! Beautiful colour pictures. Detailed descriptions and it inspires you to strive for greater achievement in dance....

Book Description
Muhammad Ali is one of the most remarkable personalities of our time and the greatest sportsman to ever walk the earth. To honor this living legend, TASCHEN has created a work that is both epic in scale and just as unique and vibrant as the man himself. It is more than appropriate that a worthy tribute to his life would reflect the scale of his achievements, and "GOAT - Greatest of All Time" proves itself up to the task.
Four years in the making, and the most comprehensive look at Ali to date, "GOAT" tips the scales at 34 kgs (75 lbs) and is 50 cm x 50 cm (20" x 20") in size. 800 pages of archival and original photographs, graphic artwork and articles and essays - many of them previously unpublished - chronicle six decades of his life in stunning detail. To cap it all, the project takes place with the participation of Ali himself and those members of his inner circle who have been closest to him over the years: from managers and key ringside cornermen to friends, family and children; from spiritual and other advisers to broadcasters, essayists and journalists.
No stone has been left unturned in telling this remarkable story: the book features written contributions from hundreds of writers and photographers, as well as over 3,000 photographs of Ali's dazzling life. Plus Ali's own insights, writings and drawings, and reproductions of fight posters and classic memorabilia.
In addition, new work - commissioned from artist Jeff Koons - gives the Ali mythology a twenty-first-century edge and an entirely contemporary context. "GOAT" will come in two versions: the (Champ's Edition), limited to the first 1,000 copies and featuring a specially-commissioned congenial multiple by Jeff Koons as well as four silver gelatin prints by Howard L. Bingham, signed by the photographer and Ali himself. The remaining 9,000 copies come with a photo-litho made by Jeff Koons. All 10,000 copies are individually signed by Muhammad Ali and Jeff Koons.

If you love Ali get his own SOul of A Buterfly or the other bio - if you can find it, as it really gest into the soul of this great man, and into his depp and abiding faith, which is a place no one any longer goes.
Of course if any of the three thousand or twelve thousand DO get to Ali and his family it will make up in a SMALL way for all the millions managers and damagers stole form him, and will get distributed to good working charitable and humanitarian organizations that actually help people, as Ali gives it all away to those in need, unless Bush has declared him officially a funder of bad and dubious causes
so if it goes to Ali, live large y'all
sting like a bee
G.R.O.A.T. (Greatest Review of All Time).......2006-02-03
First things first: This book has got talent. It might have once weighed in at a measily 40 pounds (500 pages), but has built up its strength and is now a strong contender. Few could question the book's power when it overcame several best sellers, rising up the non-fiction ranks like a soaring upper cut to truly punish George Foreman's jaw. The only question remaining for the experts is this: Will this book have what it takes to take on in a heavy weight bout its subject ?
Pretty amazing book.......2005-01-24
I had a chance to check out this book at the Tattered Cover of Denver
It is MASSIVE and HUGE
The photographs inside are amazing! It definitely attracts the non-reader, and visual lover, within all of us
The price is VERY steep - only purchase if you're a REALLY big fan
Otherwise, I at least suggest that you find a copy, just to see what a really huge book, about a pretty big dude, is like ----- the book is a feat, in itself - just like Muhammad Ali
Ali as object of conspicuous consumption.......2004-07-21
I revere Ali. I had the honor of meeting him for an author appearance for a previous photo essay book when I worked for a New York-based publisher. The Champion Edition at $10,000 and the cheaper edition at $3000 are antithetical to who the man is, or has been. He has always been a man of the people, and not a sycophant for the wealthy who buy books like they buy shares of Berkshire Hathaway. If there was any information about proceeds from the sale of the books benefitting someone other than the publishers and authors I would feel differently. As it is, this is just an opportunity for those who'd have sent him to jail for avoiding the draft to own him. I'd wager that they care less about what the man stands for than that they can now own something their friends can't afford. If you love Ali and have $3000 or $10,000 to spend, give to a charity in his name.
Ten Stars!.......2004-05-09
"Goat: A Tribute to Muhammad Ali" is seventy-five pounds of the finest photos, essays and articles on the man himself. The packaging is great, with a box to protect the cover from shelf wear.
Nearly every photograph in this huge book is a work of art, many of which have never before been seen. The composition and details of the photographs are amazing. I found myself staring at them for hours.
The hefty price will scare off many, but it really is worth it. Don't forget that it comes autographed by Ali and Jeff Koons. (Meaning it will only go up in value.)
Overall, this beautiful book really is the ultimate tribute. It rates at least ten stars!
