      Book Description

A wide range of researchers are currently investigating different properties and applications for copper-containing proteins. Biochemists researching metal metabolism in organisms ranging from bacteria to plants to animals are working in a completely different area of discovery than scientists studying the transportation and regulation of minerals and small molecule nutrients. They are both working with copper-containing proteins, but in very different ways and with differing anticipated outcomes.

                    Description:
Three populations of brown trout (Salmo trutta) exposed to different metal levels in their natural environments, were studied with respect to antioxidants metallothionein (MT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) as well as for corresponding mRNA levels. In addition, mRNA levels were studied for glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR). The Cd/Zn-exposed trout (Naustebekken River) had higher accumulated levels of Cd, Cu and Zn in gills, and higher levels of MT (both protein and mRNA) in liver and kidney as well as in gills compared to the Cu-exposed trout (Rugla River) and trout from an uncontaminated reference river (Stribekken River). Less MT found in the Cu-exposed trout may increase susceptibility to oxidative stress, but no higher levels of antioxidant mRNAs were found in gills of these trouts. The data indicated that chronic exposures of brown trout to Cd, Zn and/or Cu did not involve maintenance of high activities of SOD and CAT enzymes in gills, although SOD mRNA levels were higher in the Cd/Zn-exposed trout. In livers, mRNA levels of SOD, CAT and GPx were higher in the metal-exposed trout, but in the case of GR this was only seen in kidneys of Cd/Zn-exposed trout. However, both metal-exposed groups had higher activities of SOD enzyme in liver compared to the unexposed reference trout, and CAT activity was found to be higher in kidneys of Cu-exposed trout. The Cu-exposed trout did not seem to rely on MT production to avoid Cu toxicity in gills, but rather by keeping the Cu uptake at a low level. A coordinated expression of different stress genes may also be important in chronic metal exposure. It may be concluded that the observed metal effects relies on acclimation rather than on genetic adaptation in the metal exposed populations.

                      Description:
Deregulation of Ca^2^+ homeostasis can produce serious effects on cell functioning due to an alteration of Ca^2^+ signaling. The aim of this study was to evaluate variations in plasma membrane Ca^2^+-ATPase (PMCA) induced in mussels by in vivo exposure to Cu^2^+ or Hg^2^+. PMCA activity was assayed using a cytochemical method allowing localization and in situ quantification of Ca^2^+-ATPase on cryostat tissue sections. The effects of fixed concentrations of Cu^2^+ (0.6 @mM) or Hg^2^+ (1.3 @mM) were evaluated after different times of exposure (1, 4, 6 days), while those of increasing amounts of Cu^2^+ (0.3, 0.6, 1.3 @mM) or of Hg^2^+ (0.6, 1.3, 2.4 @mM) were evaluated after 4 days. Cu^2^+ produces dose-dependent inhibition of PMCA in the digestive gland, with a minimum at the fourth day of treatment and a recovery at the sixth day. Conversely, Hg^2^+ induces a significant rise of PMCA activity, with a maximum at the fourth day. Similar results have been found after biochemical assay of PMCA, using plasma membranes obtained from density-gradient separation of gill homogenates. PMCA expression has been assessed by immunoprecipitation and Western immunoblotting on digestive gland homogenates, showing an induction after exposure to Hg^2^+ but not to Cu^2^+. In conclusion, Cu^2^+ does not vary PMCA expression but reduces PMCA activity, indicating PMCA inhibition; conversely, Hg^2^+ increases PMCA expression more than PMCA activity, suggesting that it also produces PMCA inhibition, but the induction of PMCA expression leads to a net increase in enzyme activity.

                        INTRODUCTION

Montréal is by far Canada's most cosmopolitan city. Toronto may have the country's economic power and Vancouver its most majestic scenery, but the centuries-old marriage of English and French cultures that defines Montréal has given the city an allure and dynamic unique to North America - a captivating atmosphere that is admittedly hard to describe. Its ethnic make-up is in truth fairly diverse, what with plenty of Italians, Greeks, Eastern Europeans, Jews, Chinese and Portuguese putting down roots in various neighbourhoods over the last century. But ever since the French first flew the flag here back in the 1600s, the struggle for the city's soul has centred on - and largely set apart - its English and French factions.

As such Montréal has always been a pivotal player in the politics of Québec separatism, the tension between the two main linguistic groups having reached a searing low in the late 1960s, when the Front de Libération du Québec waged a terrorist campaign on the city as the province was undergoing a "francization" that would affect Montréal most of all. In the wake of legislation that enshrined French-language dominance in Québec, English-Quebecers fled in droves, tipping the nation's economic supremacy from Montréal to Toronto. After decades of linguistic dispute, though, a truce appears to have at last settled in, and nowadays it's hard to believe that only a few years ago a narrowly failed 1995 referendum on separation transformed the city into a pitched battlefield over linguistic and territorial rights. It seems virtually everyone can speak French, while the younger generation of Francophones also speak l'anglais - certainly a blessing for English-speaking visitors who should have no problem finding someone who speaks the language. The truce has also gone hand in hand with the city's economic resurgence, which sees Montréal at the fore of Canada's high-tech industry.

The duality of Montréal's social mix is also reflected in its urban make-up. Sandwiched between the banks of the St Lawrence River and the forested, trail-laced rise of Mont Royal, the heart of the city is an engaging melange of Old and New World aesthetics. Busy downtown, with its wide boulevards lined by sleek office towers and rambling shopping malls, is emblematic of a typical North American metropolis, while just to its south, Vieux-Montréal preserves the city's unmistakable French heritage in its layout of narrow, cobblestone streets and town squares anchored by the radiant Basilique Notre-Dame. Balancing these are traces of the city's greatest international moment, Expo '67, echoes of which remain on Parc Jean-Drapeau, the islands across from Vieux-Montréal that hosted the successful World Fair. A few kilometres east stands perhaps the city's greatest folly, the Stade Olympique built for the 1976 Olympics, its leaning tower overshadowing the expansive Jardin Botanique, second only to London's Kew Gardens.

Specific sights aside, it's the street-level vibe that makes Montréal such a great place to visit. Like the homegrown Cirque du Soleil, Montréal has a ceaseless - and contagious - energy that infuses its café and lounge culture, its exciting into-the-wee-hour nightlife, and the boisterous summer festivals that put everyone in a party mood. Nowhere captures this free-spirited ethos better than Plateau Mont-Royal, the trendiest neighbourhood in town and effective meeting point of Montréal's founding and immigrant cultures. Here, the best restaurants, bars and clubs hum and groove along boulevard St-Laurent, the symbolic divide between the city's French and English communities, under the watchful gaze of the city's most prominent landmark, the cross atop Mont Royal that recalls Montréal's initial founding as a Catholic colony.

In some contrast, Québec City, around 250km east, seems immune to outside forces, its walled old town steadfastly embodying the province's French fact. Perched atop a promontory with a commanding view of the St Lawrence and laced with winding, cobblestone streets flanked by seventeenth- and eighteenth-century stone houses, it ranks as Québec's most romantic and beautifully situated city. Closer to Montréal, two other enchanting regions - the Eastern Townships (Les Cantons-de-l'Est) and the Laurentian mountains (Les Laurentides) - provide excellent getaways, along with top-notch skiing, away from the teeming city centre.

                          Book Description

"Only recently have a few collectors, dealers, and museums begun, once again, to take notice of Triscott's long-forgotten watercolors, appreciating not only the exceptional technique but also his sensitive portrayal of land and sea." —Edward L. Deci, Monhegan Museum Association

In 1892, British expatriate Samuel Peter Rolt Triscott (1846-1925), a highly esteemed watercolorist in Boston, visited Monhegan for the first time. Enamored with its beauty and remoteness, he returned to purchase a home, added a studio, and in 1902 moved permanently to the island, becoming the first artist to live year-round on Monhegan.

A classic nineteenth-century watercolorist in the English tradition, Triscott continued to paint, but also did photography, painted in oils, and produced hand-tinted photographs. He took delight in his garden and his cats, served tea in the afternoon to a few select friends, and gradually severed his ties with the cosmopolitan art world in favor of life on a rugged island ten miles out to sea. He continued painting in the style which suited him best, but as public taste turned to impressionism, expressionism, and modernism, his masterful landscapes and beautifully composed studies were largely ignored by the larger art world.

In the years following his death, many of his paintings were given away or sold for just a few dollars, but some remained in islanders' homes and he was considered by some locals to have been one of the most important members of Monhegan's celebrated art community. In the 1970s Richard Malone began collecting Triscott's paintings and undertook researching his life. His biographical essay on Triscott forms the core of this book, with 50 paintings shown in full color. More than 60 black and white photographs of Monhegan, printed from Triscott's glass plates, are accompanied by an essay by Earle Shettleworth on Triscott's photography.

If you love animals, let alone zoos, you'll love this humorous behind the scenes view of the world famous San Diego Zoo. Author Bill Seaton, former SD Zoo public relations professional, recounts many "tails" that anyone will enjoy. It is truly a fun and easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny, but educational as well.......2006-05-02

This is a wonderfully funny book. Bill Seaton has two qualities a good humor writer needs: he is not afraid to make himself the butt of the humor, and he's a bit zany himself. But he writes clearly and well, and knows how to tell a good story -- there are dozens in this book. But the book is very informative on the world of animal and you will find many interesting facts you didn't know -- such as why they bleach the polar bear's hair. An ideal book for children -- of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars San Diego Zoo Stand-Up Comedian.......2006-04-27

Bill Seaton's collection of antics and mishaps during his tenure at the San Diego Zoo is good enough for a stand-up comedy routine! The chapters are entertaining and brief, offering an amusing -- and informative -- alternative to magazine reading during doctors' visits, airline flights, etc. Having rubbed shoulders with Joan Embry, Jack Hanna, Johnny Carson, Phyllis Diller and other stars (along with chimps, snakes, sea lions et al), he provides a hilarious behind-the-scenes view of what makes a world-famous zoo tick. As Tony the Tiger would say, "It's G-RRRR-EAT!"

Bill Seaton shows marvellous talent in describing his hilarious experiences as public relations director for the San Diego Zoo, which every visitor recognizes as one of the country's best. In the process, he offers a great deal of solid information on what makes zoos tick. In other words, this book is highly informative as well as superbly entertaining.

What a great resource for Antique and Modern dolls. Julie Collier knows her doll collecting and values and shares them with you. Can't tell you how many times this book has come in handy. Gives advice of dealing with private sellers as well as what to expect out of selling your dolls. You name the year and or the doll and she can break the value down to you in terms anyone could understand. Very informative, and enjoyable....I would read it just for the sake of learning about my dolls and find some of the most sought after ones as well.

                                  Book Description

Ann Daly ranks among the most insightful, articulate dance critics and scholars writing today. Spanning the divide between journalism and scholarship, this collection offers a double-sighted view of dance in America from 1986 to the present, documenting the shift in experimental dance from formal to social concerns, and recording the expansion of dance studies in the academy from historical documentation to cultural criticism.

Daly examines performance art and visual art as they relate to and influence dance, with a look at the intersection of dance and history. Gender is the subject of the final section of the book. More than 80 reviews, features, essays, interviews and scholarly articles -- including extended considerations of Pina Bausch, Deborah Hay, Bill T. Jones and Ralph Lemon -- were originally published in venues ranging from High Performance to The New York Times to TDR: A Journal of Performance Studies.

I saw "Le Reve" in Vegas shortly after it opened and consider it a master work. Truly a fantastic show. I bought this book sight unseen to have some record of the production other than the souvenir program which did not have production pictures at that point. This book brings back wonderful memories of the show in fantastic photographs. In addition there are great rehearsal photographs and a biography with pictures of the creator of the show.

I highly recommend the show and this book to anyone who appreciates imaginative theatre and beautiful photography.
