teaches kids on how to approach and treat animals. a great lesson! i love the whole series but this was useful because we have dogs but needed to teach her that not all pets/wild animals should be approached.

Puerto Rico.......2007-05-15

I keep forgetting how much I don't care for Frommer's guides and wind up buying another one.

1. Frommer's has next to no pictures.
2. I think somebody went to a couple of random restaurants and beaches and decided to call them the "Best of".

For example, Frommer's says there is snorkeling at Luqillo beach, but there is none (unless all you want to see is sand). Luquillo is a great beach for swimming, but the snorkeling sucks.

Another example is the restaurant in the southeast part of the island called Tulio's. While it is a nice restaurant and our food was good, it is not cheap. At least I don't consider $20 a plate cheap.

Map Problems.......2007-01-06

Some maps in the guide don't reflect current reality eg the pull out map shows a major highway on the SE coast. However construction projects for many sections of that highway (Rt 53) have not yet commenced.

In general we had problems navigating because every map we picked up from guidebooks and tourist brochures was wrong, each in its own special way! If driving, do yourself a favor and buy a very detailed and up-to-date map before you head out.

A Cultural Tour of Puerto Rico for Mid-Income Tourists.......2003-01-12

This is a good guide for seeing the cultural sights of Puerto Rico, especially in San Juan. The book is geared towards travellers only moderately concerned with budget. A few pieces of information are outdated, such as bus numbers and changes in price, but the numbering system (up to three stars) is useful for the first-time traveller with little knowledge of the country. Detailed descriptions of the sights in San Juan help visitors get a sense of the city's history while the walking tour takes them around to key spots. There is a comparable walking tour of Ponce, along with a description of the Museo de Arte de Ponce which prevented me from missing out on this fine museum. Ponce is the only place where we tried one of the listed hotels. Although the book described Hotel Belgica as "roughing it," we thought the accommodations were fine and enjoyed the unusual atmosphere of an old-style hotel. The book is full of useful tidbits. For example, en route to Parguera (which should get two stars, not one), the name of the road changes several times along the way (101, 116, 315, 305, 304). No wonder people get confused. Additional information: The book should include a warning that the $5 boat trip to the Phosphorescent Bay near Parguera doesn't let you see much, so it's best to go with the friendly folks at Paradise Scuba Center (the address is listed). Additionally, the Rio Camuy Cave Park sometimes sells out of tickets by 9am (especially on weekends), so it's best to get there early. Finally, good snorkeling is available in San Juan on the west side of the Wyndham Hotel (Condado).

Why doesn't someone write a decent travel guide to PR?.......1999-10-13

I've used this guide for three PR vacations, and each time I want to throw it across the hotel room. But I can't because the other guides are even worse or even less comprehensive. What's the problem with this one? The lack of description: it gives you no feel as to what makes each beach/hotel unique. Invariably every second beach is summed up vaguely as 'one of the best beaches on the island,' even if one has brownish sand and no snorkling while another "best" beach is pristine white, loaded with fish, and secluded. It's the same with hotels, too, except there's no explanation of what the mood is like there, what kind of people stay there, what the view is like, what the rooms are like, if there's a bar to hang out in after dinner, how close the beach is.... It's almost comic, except when you're trying to figure out where to spend your precious time and money.

Another frustrating problem is that no one took the time to edit this guide. One beach or hotel will be mentioned in two (or three) places in entirely different tones, so it's hard to guess whether a place is just wacky or dirty (or, in the instance of La Parguera, too polluted to swim in one mention; just fine in another). Also, uninspired writing means a breathtaking mountain retreat like the Casa Grande Hotel in Utuado comes across as completely unremarkable and possibly worth skipping. Can't the writers come out and say "This place is great" or, if necessary, "This place is a dump?" A reader might wonder if these guys visited anything but bloated resorts at all. PR deserves better and I certainly expected better from Frommer's.

This book had few redeeming qualities........1999-06-08

My husband and I purchased this book to go on our honeymoon and were sorely disappointed. The descriptions were vague and often downright incorrect. Luquillo beach, which the authors described as one of the best beaches in the Carribean, had dingy grey water and was filled with garbage. This is only one example of many many misrepresentations. The guide leaned almost exclusively to very expensive restaurants, and even these were nothing to write home about. We had more luck after we ditched the guide and started exploring on our own. Its one good point was some interesting background on the history of Puerto Rico. However, this was not enough to make me buy another Frommer's guide.

Close to useless on many fronts.......2004-03-28

Not terrible, but don't rely on it for finding anything special.

Taking a cruise to San Juan? Fine book. You will get off the boat, go to some reasonable shops, eat a good (but not cheap) meal, and do fine.

Interested in a fun week outside of San Juan? Not so great. Did a fine job (although far from complete) on where to stay. Especially Paradors (gov't run hotels) were a great contribution from the book.

Looking for a place to snorkel? Or for a special beach? The treasure-hunt attitude of the book ("nearby, you will find super beach with incredible snorkeling") is useless. How about some directions and physical location? "Nearby" seems to encompass everything from driving down unmarked roads to hiking trash strewn trails where you sincerely hope the end of the trail is a great beach, and not a mugging. Maps were also incredibly inaccurate.

Useless.......2004-03-02

The respected Frommer really falls to the bottom of the pile after this book. We took our first visit to Puerto Rico last month and we looking for what the reviews promised. Well, unless you want information about San Juan and Old San Juan, forget about it. There was NO info about our resort - The Copamarina - which, we've learned is in another of Frommer's books as a recommended spot. We were staying in the southern portion of the island and there's little info in the book for that area. We were particularly interested in purchasing the masks worn at Carnivale...the shops recommended in the book no longer exist. The Fox-Delicias Mall in Ponce is completely closed and empty for renovation.

Everything you need to know in 210 pages........2003-08-15

This pocket-sized guide was the only thing I needed to carry on my trip to Puerto Rico. With tips on the best beaches, wild life attraction, and restaurants, we were able to get the true authentic experience. Prices were exact and current, ratings and highlights were easy to find, and the cost was low. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to get the most of their vacation without a big, heavy book.

Lacking in Maps and Hotel Information.......2003-08-26

I found this a well written book that captured the feel of Puerto Vallarta and helpul for dining, shopping and background information. However the maps were inadequate and the hotel information very skimpy. I realise that it is a compact book but it should have a couple of detailed one or two page maps of the entire area showing road names. Unfortunately there are no maps in print to supplement the tiny vague maps in this book.

Frommer's Portable Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo & Guadalajara.......2000-10-23

On the plus side, this book is well-organized, easy to read, and up-to-date. However, for a book with only three cities to cover, it's rather skimpy on useful information. For example, for Puerto Vallara, it has only two hotels listed in the Marina area, ONE hotel listed for the popular northern "hotel zone," three hotels listed in the downtown area (one of which has only 13 units), and three hotels in the southern "hotel zone" (one of which has only 7 units). It completely leaves out many nice and popular hotels, incldinng the "Krystal," "Sheraton Buganvilias", "Buenaventura," and "Jolla de Mismaloya." The restaurant section is also unreasonably skimpy, especially for someone who plans to stay there a week or more. Although I understand that the guide is supposed to be "Portable," there certainly seemed to be other information in the book which probably would interst a smaller number of people. For example, it would seem unlikely that a person wanting only information on Jalisco and Colima states would drive to this area, yet there's a large section dealing with this. Likewise, information on all the embassies (New Zealand, etc.) in Mexico City is probably less useful that more restaurant and hotel choices in Puerto Vallarta.

Frommer's Mexico books are the best!.......2000-04-05

I've used the big Frommer's Mexico book countless times, but this small book is a must for anyone going to the Pacific Coast. The author hails from Puerto Vallarta, and her love for the town shows. Her dining reviews are great, and took me to some great "finds." My only suggestion would be more hotel reviews! Great job overall.

I bought this not realizing it was a 1992 edition. The title is misleading '(Frommer's Comprehensive Travel Guides). No where in the title does it say 1992 - as compatred to more recent titles where the specific year is printed in the title. Sent it back. Why would anyone want a travel guide that is 14 years old.

This book is good as a basic reference. It has pictures of most of the popular aquarium plants and a basic how to guide for planted tanks. Definitely good for anyone just starting out or wanting pictures of basic aquarium plants. The care guide in this book is slightly vague on the water parameters/light preferences/nutrient needs for some of the plants.

Good Solid Concise Information on Aquarium Plants.......2000-08-25

I purchased this book because of the other reviews. I have not been disappointed. Even though I just started reading it last night, I can already recommend it. It's not overly technical, but technical enough to answer all my questions (and I love technical info). For me it offers exactly the right mix of useful info, presented in a concise manner, and is enjoyable to read. After only 20 pages, I really feel like I understand plants better and know the inportant factors/variables under my control to help them grow better! Very useful, and inexpensive!

It is a very good book for beginners and a handy reference manual. When I read some reviews, I thought that the photos were microscopic, but they aren't. Very useful, includes 4 types of biotopes for aquascaping.

Fish Keeper's guide to aquariem plants.......2000-03-18

The comments from others hold true but I would like to add one more thing and that is that the book is very small. Although very informative and with good photography (it shows you what plants look like brought up under poor light conditions) I will not reference it often due to its size. The print is tiny and hard to read and the photographs would have been splendid in a larger book. For the budget minded, this book is really worth it.

This is a great book for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike. Nice photos, good explanations,descriptions, and care instructions for common and uncommon plants you might encounter. A very handy reference that you will certainly get much use out of.

Terrific book gives comprehensive look at design characteristics making it easier to identify glass maker. Very organized. The color photos are worth the price of the book! Perfect for any serious glass collector or dealer. I highly recommend.

The world climate is changing. Water rationing has become common in many cities and states. Though you may not live in an extremely dry environment there are 'common sence' tips through out this book that can benefit any active gardener.

The unique word, Xeriscape, is becoming more common as gardeners become more environmentally conscious. It comes from the prefix xero = dry, dryness. Common associated words are : xeroderma (dry skin), xerophyte (plant or person flourishing in a dry, hot environment) and of course, Xerox (dry copy). Though the writing is written in a `xero' style, there is a ton of horticultural wisdom to be excavated in this book. The brilliant color photos are sure to make up for any short coming in literary inspiration.

`Dry Climate Gardening' may help you to see gardening in a new way, a natural way. It teaches how to work with the forces of nature, not against them.

Most beneficial is the section "Plants for Dry Climate Gardens". The sections starts with trees, goes to shrubs and ends with perennials. This section is a cornucopia of unusual plant varieties unique to most gardens. If the plants you select are right for the environment you will not have to `nuture and protect' them and have more time to sit, sip and celebrate your new garden. Strongly recommended. 4.5 stars.

This is it, the oldest original source for English Country dances, complete with sheet music, diagrams, and instructions. Of course, it's all public domain material available for free on the web, but it's handy to be able to carry the book around with you, and it's even small enough to hold in one hand while you're dancing.

John Playford is one of the most know dance teacher all times. So this book is a must to everyone who is starting or has danced historical dances. Music is no problem if you know how to play violin or recorder, because there are notes for every dance.

If you don't know how to play that isn't a problem at all. In the internet you can find freely copyable music to almost every dance.

English country dances are easy and fun to dance. And you have to use your head in these dances that is very different to modern discodancing. So buy the book, start to dance it keeps dementia away.

The English Dancing Master has been most useful to our theater company in staging authentic ancient dance. The single line of melody in standard music notation is easy for musicians to use. The dance instructions are clear and make it easy for a small group to learn the dance. The dances are beautiful, and there is a wide variety of styles and partnering.

Black and Catholic in Omaha: A Case of Double Jeopardy examines an area of American life that has gotten little attention--that of a black Catholic community in a predominantly white church and society.

Author Jack Angus has spent more than a decade participating in the life of this parish while conducting his research. The result is a reconstruction of the first fifty years of the difficult journey from mission to mainstream Catholic for St. Benedict the Moor Parish and its people.

The story is replete with examples of difficulties experienced not only with white people in general, but with other Catholics--both clerical and laity--as well. At the same time, there are also examples of friendship and support from these same quarters.

The author recounts the faith journey which a handful of Catholic pariahs, and a lone evangelizing Jesuit priest, undertook on a cold, raw, rainy December day in Omaha, Nebraska. It would take them through financial depression, war, flood, and riots; and bring them to a new and greater sense of their own heritage.
