Book Description
This volume delves into the realm between representative images and real animals. It is a historical inquiry into human interaction with the animals we eat, pamper, experiment on, and imagine, as they have been variously domesticated, slaughtered, loved, studied, and made into icons of human invention. Common assumptions and experiences with animals have entered into the functioning and conceptualizing of life, yet these are historically and culturally contingent. The essays in this volume unveil the ways in which human-animal relationships reveal the interhuman structures of the cultures in which they are formed. By using animals as a lens, they refocus our awareness of the ways in which humans have allotted resources, gathered knowledge, and structured families. The treatment of animals is often a guide to the treatment of people within a society, while the perceived 'stewardship' of humans over animals has helped shape the broader environment that both human and nonhuman animals share. The authors tackle their subject from a variety of levels -- popular, scientific, and economic. The essays explore the vast borderland between human ideas and physical nature regarding animal representation.Contributors include Richard W. Burkhardt, Jr., Jonathan Burt, Ken C. Erickson, Katherine C. Grier, Richard C. Hoffmann, Andrew C. Isenberg, Jacqueline Milliet, John Solomon Otto, Karen A. Rader, Harriet Ritvo, Nigel Rothfels, Kenneth J. Shapiro, and Edward I. Steinhart.Mary Henninger-Voss is an associate of the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies, Princeton University.

Good overview but get something else to plan.......2006-05-31
I first bought this book a couple of months ago and was really pleased at first. It seemed to give good information on a variety of areas and gave recommendations of things to do that were probably off of the beaten path. Based on the book I drew up a list of the places in Ecuador that I would like to visit and laid the book down for a little bit until I had firmed up my plans some more.
On picking up the book again I started to see some of the glaring errors I had missed in my first reading. There are very few maps of the cities that are spoken of in the book so it doesn't really do you any good to know an address if you have no idea where in the city it is. When there is a map it will label all of the things mentioned in that section on that map. When you're talking about Quito or Cuenca or even significantly smaller cities you have to search the entire map to find the name of a hotel or museum. It would have been so much easier if there was a key to the map where all the locations were given numbers and you could say that Hostal Maria is #5 which is located in square B-3.
This guidebook also wasn't very helpful in planning because it wouldn't give very much information on the transportation section. You could be in a section on the southern coast and it will say that the bus takes 11 hours to Quito. Well, what about Guayaquil or other closer cities of importance? Also, how frequent are the buses? Is it once a day or do they leave every couple of hours? Very few travelers are going to keep going to the capital in between cities. Rather they will probably be making a circuit and it's really necessary to know how long it is between cities in a region.
In addition it will mention towns that are major transportation hubs (like Jipijappa) but doesn't give any additional information like travel times to various places, accomdations if you need stay the night, etc.
One last pet peeve was that frequently they would mention a hotel or a restaurant and just give the name of the place with no address or phone number.
Having said all of this the Moon guide was informative about various places and it was nice that it included pictures in the text, though as usual, more would have been nice. I had bought the Lonely Planet Peru and found it far more helpful in planning for that country. Unfortunately, however, the LP for Ecuador hasn't been updated since Ecuador switched its currency. Oh well.
For sale at any price.......2006-04-14
A travel writer casually speaking of the tour company he touts as having bribed the army for permissions that the environmental agency in the area denied is not someone I would trust on any level.
Whom has he bribed and who bribed him. Would you trust his information? I wouldn't.
Moon Over Ecuador.......2006-02-24
Very informative and as I have used Moon publications before I knew exactly where to go for the things I needed to look at. The index helps finds things faster if you are not quite sure, or even if you know the exact subject matter. It goes in the suitcase first!
Best of the 3 Ecuador books I bought.......2004-06-22
Hi,
I bought three Ecuador guides for my recent trip. Lonely Planet was pretty good but for detail on hotels and restaurants the Moon Guide gave the greatest detail
The best Ecuador guide going.......1999-01-28
Informative, entertaining, obsessively comprehensive--you have to love a guidebook that quotes Kurt Vonnegut and describes Galapagos penguins as looking "as out of place as eskimos at a beach party." Makes you realize how dull most other travel guides are. And all the travel details are dead-on, too. My wife and hiked around Cotopaxi volcano, rafted in the Amazon, and went birdwatching along the coast, and in all cases the information was accurate and complete.
Book Description
Creating paintings with poetic resonances, sometimes with ties to specific lines of poetry, is a practice that began in China in the eleventh century, the Northern Sung period. Cahill vividly surveys its first great flowering among artists working in the Southern Sung capital of Hangchou, probably the largest and certainly the richest city on earth in this era. He shows us the revival of poetic painting by late Ming artists working in the prosperous city of Suchou. And we learn how artists in Edo-period Japan, notably the eighteenth-century Nanga masters and the painter and haiku poet Yosa Buson, transformed the style into a uniquely Japanese vehicle of expression. In all cases, Cahill shows, poetic painting flourished in crowded urban environments; it accompanied an outpouring of poetry celebrating the pastoral, escape from the city, immersion in nature. An ideal of the return to a life close to nature--the "lyric journey"--underlies many of the finest, most moving paintings of China and Japan, and offers a key for understanding them.

Pictures, not photos........2006-05-10
This cute little "gift" book has cat pictures, not photos. It has nice quotes and pictures, but as with all "gift" books it seems a little $$$ for its size.
'There are no ordinary cats'.......2002-02-23
This little book is a gem for any one who lives with cats and loves them with a passion. Each quotation sums up completely the personality and humor of the cat - and yes, cats DO have a sense of humor - they have to, remember, they live with us imperfect Humans!

Essential Guide for Old Paper Collectors.......2006-03-06
This was clearly a labor of love for co-authors Martinus and Rinker. Their mini-guide to ephemera collecting in the front of the book is more than worth the cost of the book. It is a joy to read. It provides anyone interested in collecting ephemera will an outstanding overview of the field.
Although the prices listed in the guide are now outdated, the book remains a useful reference for any serious collector of ephemera. This important reference deserves a place on any old paper collector's bookshelf.
It would be wonderful to see a revised edition of this guide with current prices.

Very pleasant.......2007-07-27
This is such and excellent book, I must research and see if the author is still living. My original copy of this book purchased about 10-15 years ago was chewed up by my chihuahua. We still kept it and my daughter who married last year remembered it and wanted to re-read and use since it had helped her germinate a mango pit sucessfully when she was a child. The book is such a pleasant read and gives such great advice on germinating odd seeds and pits. I'm so glad I was able to get a "new" copy and have sent it to her as a gift. The illustrations are excellenty done by the authors wife. I'd love to meet them and have them autograph by copy.
Great Book. Funny Too. .......2006-07-09
I've owned this book since the seventies. I like it for its easy instructions that are really geared to sucess if followed. The humor is a plus! I have gone back to it over and over through the years. This morning, I was trying to find out how to germinate a cherry seed but, alas, that's not included. Not to worry I have lots of pits and will just see what happens. I only wish an updated issue of this book would soon emerge!
Great information and extremely entertaining!.......2006-01-31
I've read a lot of gardening books and by far this is my favorite. Not only is it informative and the only book I've ever seen on the subject- it reads better than many novels I've read!
I love the authors' sense of humor and how he includes his wife's bewildered amusement at his sudden obsession with growing exotic fruits. It really hit home with me because I get many of the same reactions from family and friends. My mother stopped asking questions when I asked to use her blender (for pureeing moss to start seeds in) and other kitchen utensils. I guess she decided she was better off not knowing, and now my boyfriend is learning the same.
I plan on buying all of them a copy of this book. Maybe it'll help explain what goes on in the mind of someone who's been bitten by the "bug".
My only complaint is the book is no longer in print!
Fun and helpful.......2004-06-02
What a fun book! Informative too. I couldn't put it down, and have since grown my *own* avocado plant with my toddler (we named ours Audrey). The stories associated with the author's experience with each plant are funny, sometimes hysterically so. My favorite was the image of him standing on a ladder forcefully throwing coconuts into a bathtub filled with saltwater to simulate coconuts falling out of a tree into the ocean. Don't worry, after describing how he experiments, he tells you the easier shortcuts (a ladder wouldn't fit into my bathroom anyway). Reading it makes you want to immediately buy and eat the exotic fruits he describes just for the seeds and the fun of trying to grow them (inside, my favorite place - no bugs, controlled climate, etc.). My only complaint is that the fruits are indeed largely exotic. The fruits in the book include mango, Chinese gooseberry, prickly pear, sugarcane, and pomegranate. I was hoping for some plain orange, lemon, or apple seed hints as well. Maybe other people are better at growing such ordinary plants, or at least less intimidated than me, but I loved having the plant-specific instructions that maximize the chances of success. Overall, I'd highly recommend this book, especially for those who would like to have a green thumb but just don't quite (like me) or for those who just like funny stories. Here's hoping for a sequel, even after all this time! :-)
Find this book!.......2003-11-02
This book is an absolute hoot! Everyone is amazed that I can grow a grocery store pineapple and have it produce an actual pineapple. It is fun for the whole family and, if you follow the detailed instructions, you can successfully garden using food that you get from your grocer. It is well written and the instructions are easy to follow.

What are you doing after dinner?.......2007-04-20
Minding my own business gnawing on some litchi nuts I started to remember back to science class where you would grow things such as avocados in water. One always wonders why we are buying this if we can grow it. At least it would be fun to try. I did a pretty good job of maintaining a sweet potato vine for a while.
Well we are not alone "The After-Dinner Gardening Book" by Richard W. Langer Helps us from making the original mistakes and encourage us to experiment. So I turned to chapter 15 "The likeable Litchi from the Land of the Jade." There was an illustration as to what it should look like when finished and several pages of instruction.
There are 24 sections and a good index. This covers techniques and environments needed to grow several plants including bananas, coconuts, dates, loquats, litchis, papayas and many more.
So what are you doing after dinner?
