Excellent.......2003-11-12
I live in New Mexico and am familiar with most of the places listed in this book and have stayed in several of them. They are exactly the way the author describes them and they are all in beautiful surroundings! This book is an excellent reference for anyone who wants a truly amazing Southwestern experience.
Mouthwatering book.......2000-10-22
This is the kind of job i would like to have: travel around the USA writing about posh accomodations. Not bad! I liked this book because it is very clear, with wonderful photographs, and what sounds like honest advice. The only thing i think is missing is an index by price. That would make the book truly perfect! But for someone who is planning a trip to the SW, this is a very valuable reference.

Education to those not knowing.......2004-07-10
This book explains the depth the Nazis went to get rid of whole nationalities, races and religions. It teaches readers young and old of how awful the circumstances where and how some survived. They have beautiful pictures, and vivid accounts of survivors. I would recommend this for schools and young children. Some children dont see the importance of this and they will learn that they should not repeat this cruel history, we teach them to learn from past mistakes to prevent the end of the future.
One of the Best Holocaust books to read.......2001-11-21
This book gives a good explanation of the Holocaust with pictures and everything. I've read many a Holocaust book and this one is one of the best so if your looking for a Holocaust book look no more this is the one.
An inncredible book.......2001-03-12
To start of this is an very inncredible book. It is ashamed it had to happen, but that is how life is. The book explains great detail of the Holocaust. When I first read this book I wanted to cry it is so emotional. If I had the chance to go back in time I would run away for all of this hatred.I really enjoyed this book, and I really like how Susan wrote it. Next time I will by another good book from her.
This book was very information-packed and very well-done........1998-11-30
I am a fifth-grader who is reading this book for a book report on the Rebecca Caudell Awards book list. This book is very informational about the Holocaust and tells things in a very detailled way, not a broad way as in some books. The book told what happened at the camps and what happened in the ghettos. I think that the book was very well done and the chronology and the glossary were both done very well. The stories of the people who suffered really made an impact on me. Most of the stories were very short but some of them were long and I think that they were important.

Book Description
Through moving photographs from the Yad Vashem Archives in Jerusalem, Israel, archivist Chana Byers Abells has created an unforgettable essay about the children who lived and died during the Holocaust. While it is a story of death and loss, it is also a story of courage and endurance, a story to be shared with today's children.
Customer Reviews:
A powerful photographic essay.......2007-07-03
This powerful photographic essay of few words describes the lives and tragic deaths of Jewish children in the holocaust and those who survived.
It consists of photos from the archives at Yad Vashem: The Holocaust Martyrs and Rememrance Authority in Jerusalem, Israel.
It shows pictures of these children, many who were murdered, and some who survived during the holocaust, it is both stark and tender.
As Elie Wiesel said of this little book: "Look at these children. Look at their faces. They will break your heart'.
The book begins : "Before the Nazis . . . some children lived in towns like this," showing the children in happier times, going on to their suffering and starvation in the ghettos and in too many cases their evential murder.
Real pictures of real children who lived during those times.
The hope lies in their memories and of the stories of those who survived'
Few words and many pictures, it brings home the tragedy of these times to young readers, in a way that few books can.
I have been to Yad Vashem, and have also seen throughout Israel, many beautiful children, and remembered that children like these were once cruelly murdered in their hundreds of thousands by the Nazis.
Israel must protect her children!
Excellent for the classroom.......2001-12-12
I am a 6th grade teacher of a multicultural awareness course in NJ. I came across this book last year and it was excellent. The pictures give the whole story in a very simple and powerful manner.
I also found excellent discussion questions in "Memories of the Night: A study of the Holocaust by Anita Meyer Meinbach.
I think Chan Byers "The Children we remember" is a must in the classroom library.
The Children We Remember.......2000-05-18
This is a wonderfully touching book that introduces elementary age children to the holocost. The pictures are poignant and draw the children in. The text is simple and thought provoking. Children begin to realize that war affects everyone even the children.

Book Description
We Remember the Holocaust chronicles the Holocaust in the voices of those who survived it. They tell us about Jewish life in Europe before the 1930s and about the violence of Hitler's rise to power. They describe the humiliations of Nazi rule, the struggle to keep families together, the fight for survival in the ghettos, the ultimate horror of the concentration camps. With its moving first-person voices and original photographs from private collections, We Remember the Holocaust is an intensely personal contribution to the history of a period that must never be forgotten.

We Will Never Forget-Haunting Pictures from the Holocaust.......2000-03-28
Using simple phrases and historic photographs, The Children We Remember is an unforgettable story about the children who lived and died during the Holocaust. While it is a story of death and loss, it is also a story of hope and courage. It will break your heart while reaffirming your faith in the endurance of the human spirit. Simple story, but powerful! This book is an excellent way to introduce the Holocaust to young adults. I read it to my fifth grade students each school year as an introduction to our World War II unit.

Book Description
On March 6, 1998, the Vatican's Commission for Religious Relations with Jews issued a document entitled We Remember: A reflection on the Shoah. This was an important statement for the Roman Catholic Church that acknowledged not only the tragic historical reality of the Holocaust, but responsibility for the Christian anti-Semitism that contributed to its happening. This document was the recipient of wide praise, some disappointment and much controversy.
This small volume brings together the statement itself, Cardinal Edward Idris Cassidy's reflection of its history and the controversy surrounding its appearance and two reflections by highly respected theologians in the Catholic-Jewish dialogue. Jesuit theologian Avery Dulles has written prolifically on the foundations of the Christian faith, while Rabbi Leon Klenicki has been productive on the fundamental principles that must govern Jewish-Christian interfaith relations.
There is no better place for this document and reflections to appear than in the enduring and well-respected Stimulus Books series, which is dedicated to topics of vital interest to the Jewish-Christian dialogue. This moving, insightful and inspirational book will be a further step forward in the dialogue.

From the supplier: Pope John Paul II expressed his deep sense of suffering for the Jewish people of the Shoah and summoned Catholics to remember the extermination of Jewish people during World War II. Book Description
Early and late frosts, arctic winds, and inhospitable terrain are just a few of the obstacles facing those who garden in the icebox region of the United States and Canada. Lewis Hill has spent a lifetime in northern Vermont, and is undaunted by the challenges of weather and climate. His system for how to garden more and better in the time that you do have is covered in this extensive 308-page guide. Cold-Climate Gardening has much information that will prove invaluable to northern gardeners: how to grow food, how to landscape, techniques to employ that will protect vulnerable plantings, how to warm up the soil earlier, and which species are appropriate to your area. Not just for those who live in the snow belt, this book will also be useful to those who garden in microclimates (such as deep valleys or hillsides) or for those who want to extend their gardening season in any climate. Horticulture has deemed it "an immensely useful book,...written with style, wit, and clarity...." You wil
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic resource.......2004-01-21
This book is an essential resource for gardeners who dream of feeding themselves off their own land in the frozen North. The book is organized into 3 sections and an appendix. Section one describes the challenges of cold climate gardening in general, and provides some very useful suggestions about how to get the most out of the garden, including dealing with microclimates, building soils, and starting seeds indoors. It closes with a chapter on ideas for lengthening the growing season, which is of vital concern when you only have 70-80 days of frost-free weather.
The second section covers various food crops in detail. It includes ideas for speeding the melting of the snow from the garden in the spring, heating the soil during the growing season, and extending the season with mulches and cold frames. It also takes up each vegetable or fruit in turn and describes whether or not it is likely to thrive in the North, with suggestions for pushing the limits, when necessary, to get a harvest.
The last section covers special landscaping concerns of the North, with information such as which hedges should be protected from deep snow, and how to build protective frames for decorative hedges. The appendix includes such things as a list of recommended readings, seed companies and nurseries that specialize in Northern varieties, and sources for greenhouse materials.
Before attempting to garden in Vermont, I've had gardens in Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, Massachusetts, and Southern New Hampshire. In those places, I never needed a book to tell me how to garden- -I just stuck seeds in the ground and they grew. But gardening is different up here, where the soil never really warms up until the end of June, if then, and frosts threaten by the end of August. Succession planting is still possible, but it takes a lot more forethought to enable two harvests on the same ground in such a short period. This book has helped me focus my efforts on vegetables that really will grow in this climate, like root crops and cabbage family plants, and restrict my planting of heat-loving plants to the "experimental section" of the garden. I've even been able to get a couple of melons and cucumbers to grow by following some of the suggestions in this book. I also learned through reading this book how not to waste my money on fruit trees that aren't fit for this climate, and why it is so important to buy fruit trees and seeds locally up here. If you're stymied by gardening in snow, this book can help!

Shmuel ben Hoshana, the most important Hebrew liturgical poet (paytan) in the final stage of the flowering of the Eretz-Israeli piyyut, came of age in the latter third of the tenth century. He was active in the academy of Eretz Israel, and reached the status of the third ("HaShlishi") in the assembly, after the gaon and the av bet din.
This volume examines the Hebrew style of this paytan according to some 650 Genizah fragments, which contain elements of his wide-ranging oeuvre (orthography and phonetics, morphology, syntax, sentences, vocabulary, themes and motifs).
Understanding the style of Shmuel HaShlishi is critical to our understanding of the creative activity of the paytanim of the final period of the flowering of the Eretz-Israeli piyyut. His style serves as a link between the Eretz-Israeli style of the early paytanim and the new style that would emerge in Spain.

Book Description
Stepping Left simultaneously unveils the radical roots of modern dance and recalls the excitement and energy of New York City in the 1930s. Ellen Graff explores the relationship between the modern dance movement and leftist political activism in this period, describing the moment in American dance history when the revolutionary fervor of "dancing modern" was joined with the revolutionary vision promised by the Soviet Union. This account reveals the major contribution of Communist and left-wing politics to modern dance during its formative years in New York City.
From Communist Party pageants to union hall performances to benefits for the Spanish Civil War, Graff documents the passionate involvement of American dancers in the political and social controversies that raged throughout the Depression era. Dancers formed collectives and experimented with collaborative methods of composition at the same time that they were marching in May Day parades, demonstrating for workers’ rights, and protesting the rise of fascism in Europe. Graff records the explosion of choreographic activity that accompanied this lively period—when modern dance was trying to establish legitimacy and its own audience. Stepping Left restores a missing legacy to the history of American dance, a vibrant moment that was supressed in the McCarthy era and almost lost to memory. Revisiting debates among writers and dancers about the place of political content and ethnicity in new dance forms, Stepping Left is a landmark work of dance history.
Customer Reviews:
When Communism was cool.......2007-07-04
This book gives an interesting and vivid portrait of the left-wing dance scene in New York City in what was perhaps my grandparents' time. A confluence of all kinds of dancers, ranging from modern to agitprop, from fine art to mass street sensibility, from ballet to ethnic, existed in the same small area. They learned at each other's studios and performed in each others' shows. There was an atmosphere of political idealism and perhaps insurrection, that permeated much of the dance scene as well as other art worlds. Many of the artists portrayed in this book were themselves Jewish immigrants, as were my grandparents (although mine weren't into dance at all).
I recognized only a few names like Martha Graham... she had her own approach and yet also worked with many other artists of quite a different stripe.
Written in a clear and readable style, this book appears to be very well-researched and sympathetic but not biased either politically or artistically. The descriptions of the very different aesthetic inspirations and the general creative approaches used by each of the dancers presented really made the descriptions come to life. Lots of archival photos, too.
It was a window peeking into another world, one that I previously had no knowledge of.
