Customer Reviews:
Fast paced Rome!.......2006-05-13
What a beautiful city, full of spectacular buildings, cobblestone roads, gorgeous old windows, intricate doors, huge fountains, endless shopping, wonderful food & warm & friendly Italians! Unfortunately our trip to Rome coincided with the Pope's illness & subsequent death (while we were in Rome!), therefore we had no access to the Vatican. But it sure is stunning from outside.
We had no problem finding English speaking Italians in Rome, especially in hotels, restaurants & shops. This book successfully guided us to the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Basilica & the Pantheon, just to name a few of our stops. We had a rental car, but parked it & made our way by foot & by taxi. Driving in Rome is scarier than driving in Manhattan, especially with all of the mopeds turning in many directions at the same time!
This book made our days in Rome enjoyable, the restaurants suggested were all great. My husband fell in love with gelato, so we ended our days at different gelato counters. I fell in love with my daily cappucinos & pana cotta! I am not a coffee drinker, but went through cappucino withdrawls when I got home. I am now a pro at making pana cotta, oh it's divine!
The road side vendors are peddling some of the best proscuitto & rocket paninni sandwiches I had in Italy! I still think about those $2 sandwiches a year later! : )
If you're planning a trip to Rome you must get this book to guide you. My husband & I talk continuously about going back again very soon.
You're going to LOVE ITALY! .......2004-09-24
I've been to Italy several times.....Rome, Venice, Florence, Bologna, Milan, some of the hill towns, etc. Here are my reviews of the best guides to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
Rick Steves' books are not recommended. They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor. They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.
Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the public transportation system. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the center of the city.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.

A worthwile investment.......2005-04-26
After reading several tour books this one turned out to be the best of the lot. Not only did it describe how to get to locations but also a history and a few intersting facts. Some of the information was outdated but its always worthwile to check up on local stuff when you get there reguardless of what any book may say. Of course they have since come out with a sixth edition so I recommend you check it out before you make your travel plans.

Book Description
Psychiatrists define cruelty to animals as a psychological problem or personality disorder. Legally, animal cruelty is described by a list of behaviors. In Just a Dog, Arnold Arluke argues that our current constructs of animal cruelty are decontextualizedimposed without regard to the experience of the groups committing the act. Yet those who engage in animal cruelty have their own understandings of their actions and of themselves as actors. In this fascinating book, Arluke probes those understandings and reveals the surprising complexities of our relationships with animals.
Just a Dog draws from interviews with more than 250 people, including humane agents who enforce cruelty laws, college students who tell stories of childhood abuse of animals, hoarders who chronically neglect the welfare of many animals, shelter workers who cope with the ethics of euthanizing animals, and public relations experts who use incidents of animal cruelty for fundraising purposes. Through these case studies, Arluke shows how the meaning of "cruelty" reflects and helps to create identities and ideologies.

Book Description
Candle powered "fairy lamps" made Victorian and Edwardian homes glow with light, and make modern collectors glow with nostalgia. Over 800 lamps made from 1880 through the 1930s are shown in full color in this new book. The lamps range from the simplest examples given out with boxes of candles to the most extravagant chandelier assemblages made for lords, rajahs, and royalty. As part of the fascinating history of lighting devices and fuels, this work draws upon many primary sources to trace the development of fairy lamps, and catalog examples that can be found on today's market. It provides an indispensable resource for collectors and dealers, of lighting devices, pottery, and art glass.
Customer Reviews:
A disappointment..........2000-01-05
I purchased this book based on the editorial review. Calling this book "an indispensable resource for collectors" is misleading. The book is beautiful enough to put on your coffee table but if you are interested in obtaining an informative and helpful text for collecting "fairy lamps" you should look elsewhere. For a book which purports to be a tool for collectors, there was very little (if any) information regarding dating pieces and distinguishing newer pieces from older ones. The history of lighting devices was somewhat informative but there was no mention why the lamps were even given the moniker "fairy lamps!" I was so disappointed that I returned the book. For the price, this book really did not live up to the review...
Book Description
The former co-host of the PBS show The Victory Garden illustrates how to plant, grow, and care for a variety of heat-resistant Southern flowers.
Customer Reviews:
Specifically addresses heat/humidity tolerances........2001-07-16
"Bulletproof Flowers for the South" --now there's a title! My first thought was this ridiculous image of Hatfields and McCoys with a bunch of flowers strapping on Kevlar between them, but the title is actually remarkably apt. This is a book of *survivors*, flowers that can stand up to the brutal temperatures and humidity of the Sweltering South.
"Bulletproof Flowers" is a dictionary-style reference on heat/humidity tolerant garden plants for gardeners living from Virginia on south, and west to Eastern Texas. Most entries include common name, scientific name, cultivar where particular varieties are prefferable, height-width specs, and a picture of the plant, along with basics of sun tolerance and miscellaneous tips on habit and cultivation. It rates plants on a relatively new "heat hardiness" scale, as well as listing the more traditional cold "hardiness zones," and includes a great deal of information based on the author's personal experiences working with the various species and cultivars. The author is clearly an experienced gardener, and in many ways this book reads like a close friend's cherished recipe box, passed along in a moment of rare generosity.
As the title suggests, the author has an easy-going sense of humor that shines thoughout the book, making it very accessible reading. It doesn't get deeply technical about cultivation of individual species, but it does contain a great deal of useful information at the front about preparing your soil with an eye to the unique challenges found in our region and climate. Probably my biggest gripe about the book is its heavy reliance on common names --which many people will consider a plus-- and the quality of the pictures. Based on the quality, I can't help wondering if this is home photography. They generally give a decent sense of the flower, but are often fuzzy, and sometimes so busy that you are not actually sure which flower is being featured. There are some useful lists in the back for various geographic areas, and the author is not shy about mentioning his favorite distributors.
Overall, I found this to be an excellent resource: I live in southeastern Virginia (northern region of Zone 8), and have had the opportunity to grow a great many of the plants he discusses and found myself basically in agreement on all points. For the ones I have not tried, I will definitely keep his opinions in mind. I think this book is well worth the price and is an excellent purchase for anyone trying to get a handle on low-maintenance, high impact southern gardening (remember, we're talking any hot & humid state, so that includes places like the lowlands of Kentucky and some of Oklahoma as well). Bear in mind however that this is targeted information focusing on climate considerations. If you are looking for a general plant cultivation reference, you may want to consider something else.
A Book for Southerners--With or Without Green Thumbs!.......2000-04-15
The former host of PBS's Victory Garden offers his latest help for Southern gardeners. Bulletproof Flowers for the South tells how to select the best flowers for the hot, humid, and often dry Southern climate and how to plant, grow, and care for them, as well. He provides an encyclopedia of more than 100 heat-resistant flowers (including photographs) and lists the top picks from expert nurseries around the South. Wilson also advices readers on how to minimize the effects of the heat by improving the soil, mulching, creating shade, and weeding.
Perfect for the accomplished gardener and for those who need a little extra help. (And who couldn't use a little extra help dealing with the merciless Southern summer! )

Book Description
Among the Dead Sea Scrolls, Psalms are found in no less than thirty-nine manuscripts. This groundbreaking volume presents the first comprehensive study of these scrolls, by making available a wealth of primary data and investigating the main issues that arise. The first part provides information which many scholars will find enormously helpful, such as descriptions of the manuscripts, listings of variant readings, a synopsis of superscriptions, and indices of contents of all the Psalms scrolls. The second part investigates the issues, some of which are relevant to the Book of Psalms itself (e.g. stabilization in two distinct stages), while others focus upon 11QPsa, the largest Psalms scroll (e.g. part of an edition of the Book of Psalms), and one involves the relation of these manuscripts to the Septuagint Psalter.

Book Description
This volume continues the publication of the series of biblical Dead Sea Scrolls that were discovered in Cave 4 at Qumran. It contains forty-two manuscripts of the Writings or Wisdom Books, from Psalms to Chronicles. These Hebrew texts antedate by a millennium what had previously been considered the earliest surviving biblical manuscripts in the original language. They document a pluriformity that characterized the ancient biblical textual tradition before the text became uniform later in the Rabbinic period. The Book of Psalms was the most widely copied book at Qumran, and the manuscripts display some alternate arrangements. The Song of Songs also displays a version that contrasts in arrangement of contents with the edition found in the traditional Massoretic Text. Superior textual variants from these manuscripts have been adopted in recent revised translations of the Bible.
Book Description
Everyone has the capacity to dance right now. With A Sense of Dance, students will learn about the physical expression of dance, gain confidence in their movement potential, and discover their own creativity.
Written in a conversational tone, this interactive text inspires students to discover their own strengths, weaknesses, and preferences through dance and to apply that self-awareness to creative expression and observation.
A Sense of Dance helps empower students in several ways. They will develop creative thinking, reasoning skills, and self-expression. And, the text covers topics they can apply to any creative process, including
how to have an original thought,
principles of composition,
aspects of creativity and intelligence, and
constructive methods of criticism.
Through the use of examples and exercises based on nonstudio experiences, the book also helps students frame the art of dance within the context of life. They'll acquire the tools necessary to appreciate, discuss, and write about dance as a fine art. Finally, the book guides students in finding their own voices as choreographers and dance appreciators.
Part I of A Sense of Dance explores the ways we use our bodies to be expressive and the ways we instinctively apply the elements of dance in daily life. Part II begins with an overview of dance exploration basics and then expands into a discussion of the three major elements of movement: time, space, and effort. Part III introduces the concepts of body intelligence and perception as students are encouraged to explore and develop their own dance perceptions and creative resources. Finally, in Part IV the art of creating a dance is shown as the art of making a statement. Through a variety of choreographic exercises, students learn to translate what they see, feel, and think about the world into dance. A Sense of Dance is an excellent text for introductory dance courses taught within a humanities curriculum. It is also an ideal reference for future dance teachers currently in methods classes. Whatever your students' levels of artistic awareness, this engaging text will help them tap into the power and energy of dance.
Customer Reviews:
Like having a Friend guide you through the process.......2000-09-05
A delightful, thorough and original review of the many skeins that weave through dance. The three chapters on choreographing were unbelievably helpful as I went through the process of making some of my own dances. Like having a trusted friend talk you through the process. I was able to critically examine and revise (or throw-out!) some of the elements I was using. As the previous reviewer noted, a unique and particularly helpful aspect of this book is the numerous movement and compositional exercises the author walks (dances) you through.
Outstanding Introduction to Dance.......2000-07-30
This book is an excellent guide for the beginning dance student. It is also useful for a more general audience, because the book is not only about dancing, but more fundamentally "is about finding ways to acknowledge who you are and what you know so that you can apply your own unique resources to any creative endeavor." The book provides a wealth of both theory and practical information, but the emphasis is always on you, the dancer or student of life, discovering who you are through dance and other physical movement. So that you understand what she's saying physically and not just mentally, Schrader supplements her text with a host of practical exercises, many of which focus on increasing your awareness of your body and of your physical environment. At the end of each chapter, she also provides a number of questions to deepen your thinking about the subjects addressed. The book is written in an extremely clear, engaging, well organized, and occasionally humorous vein. The book provides enough information, exercises, and questions to enable committed students to attain a substantial degree of mastery of dancing, whether as a performer, choreographer, or observer, and does so in a way that is not intimidating to the beginning student. The book is full of pictures, diagrams, and figures to make it easier to understand and more fun to read. A truly outstanding book that almost anyone can benefit from, and one that sets the standard as an introduction to dance.

Former Slave, activist and Rosa Parks prototype........2007-06-08
A 2007 Summer Reading List - mini review.
I had placed a book about Sojourner Truth (not this one) on my daughter's summer reading list. Sunday I passed by our Church's book cart/library and was perusing the biography section when I came across this book. Now, I knew nothing about Ms. Truth when I placed it on the reading list and thought it would not be a bad idea to acquaint myself with her life. I am so very glad I did.
Sojourner Truth's life gave her every right to be bitter. However, the love of Christ motivated her to have compassion, rather than bitterness, and still be a firey opponent to slavery. My favorite part of the book is the stories of her assertion of her rights to ride the street cars in Washinton D.C.
