5 out of 5 stars Required for a trip to Nicaragua.......2006-08-21

This was an excellent book!!! Went on our first trip to Nicaragua and this book was invaluable!!! It is so well written that we read it cover to cover and is organized in such a manner as to make it very easy to find what you're looking for. Would highly recommend it!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Best Guidebook I've Read.......2006-05-05

This is easily the most entertaining guidebook I've ever read. I found myself reading entire paragraphs or descriptions out loud to my fiance. The problem with most guidebooks is that they're incredibly boring to read and often leave out the most useful information. This book is the exception! Leonardi tells you exactly what you most need or want to know--such as how quickly you'll want to get out of a particular town you can't avoid passing through, at which hotel you might want to keep your shoes on when walking across the floor at night (yikes), or which local hotel offers the best boat rentals. This book is incredibly useful and a real page-turner--I actually read it almost cover-to-cover.

4 out of 5 stars This is a very impressive guide which I strongly recommend........2003-06-08

I used this guide during my three weeks in Nicaragua and enjoyed Leonardi's informative writing style. This handbook is more exhaustive, and more up to date, than "Footprint's Central America & Mexico Handbook".

This handbook's recommendations for accommodations/restaurants are right on the money and valuable. This guide is up-to-date and I found his recommendations to always be valid. In fact, his is one of the few guides that will tell you, candidly, no punches pulled, what he thinks: very good seafood, bad paella", "attentive service, mediocre food".

Richard Leonardi's writing is succinct and unencumbered by the superfluous. He gives you a solid mental picture, within a paragraph or two, of what to expect and how you can enjoy it.

I really enjoyed his "Further Reading & Cinema" and the history, economic, culture and environment sections are sufficient, but I would encourage you to also take with you the excellent book, "In Focus Nicaragua" (see my review).

Frustrating, and found in all Footprint guides, is the cost guide they use for accommodations. Instead of just stating what the price per room is, in dollars, they complicate it and give you a code table that you will often have to flip back and consult to remember what the cost represents. For example, a hotel that is LL=$150+, A=$46-$65. There is a better way than codes.

Leonardi mentions safety in his introduction to Nicaragua, but I found no mention of the rising problems with crime and gangs in Managua (Capital of Nicaragua). For the past few years... the area around `La Catedral Vieja' has become dangerous, an area for violent crime. In fact, when I asked to go to this area in the daytime, the taxi drivers told me be careful, using the words: "peligroso, peligroso". While I at the Old Cathedral's I talked with the resident shoe-shine man, and he also told me that this area was now very dangerous at night. He said he leaves every day at 5pm because, "me gusto mi vida."

That said, this is a very impressive guide which I strongly recommend. For those going to various Central American countries I would recommend "Footprint's Central America & Mexico Handbook". Strongly Recommended 4.5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Best Guide Book Choice.......2003-04-18

I traveled to Nicaragua with a friend and we each brought different guide books. I brought the Footprint guide and I was very, very happy that I did. The historical and cultural information was much more complete in this book. It had city maps and included places and information that other books did not.

Perhaps the most telling recommendation that I could give doesn't come from me. I took Spanish classes at a school (Casa Xalteva) in Granada, Nicaragua. The school had a number of guide books available for students to flip through, but the one they recommended was the Footprint guide!

5 out of 5 stars If you are going to Nicaragua, take this book!.......2003-02-06

A wonderful guide! With this book as your companion, you don't need to worry about the unknowns of travelling in Nicaragua. The author takes you off the beaten path when appropriate - and tells you when it would be a waste of time. A wonderful, truthful depiction of every place we visited.

5 out of 5 stars Gruesome but fun.......2007-10-05

My 8 year old likes facts and comicbook style illustrations, and whales...so this type of book is just for him.

But beware, this book describes the gruesome voyage of the Essex, which featured cannibalism...a sea captain eating his young cousin. I was nervous that my child, who is the sensitive type, would get nightmares from this book, but somehow the lighthearted illustrations take away some of the sting. In fact, he often pulls out this book to read at bedtime!

Still, be forewarned, these books are not for the squeamish. And I certainly wouldn't read them to the 4-6 set. I'd say the correct age range is something like 8-11.

            Book Description

The ability to adapt to the continual changes necessitated by American freedoms is one of the hallmarks of the American justice system. Law in America celebrates the history of this complex, ever-shifting process, detailing landmark cases, famous trials, and the influence of the media, as well as chronicling how popular culture has viewed lawyers and the judicial system over the last 250 years. The authors also profile individuals who have interpreted existing law and carved out new legal frontiers. Generously illustrated throughout, Law in America features images of the evolution of courthouse architecture; engravings and paintings depicting the legal system at work by artists including Thomas Hart Benton, Jacob Lawrence, John Singleton Copley, and Norman Rockwell; photographs and portraits from landmark cases and decision makers; and famous newspaper headlines, political cartoons, and movie stills. Includes 180 color and black-and-white photographs and illustrations.

2 out of 5 stars Boiled in Oil.......2004-03-11

The book makes several peculiar claims, among them that boiling in oil was a common punishment in Colonial America. I would like to have seen some evidence substantiating this assertion.

Most of the pictures are nice.

Buy it at the sale price or not at all.

            5 out of 5 stars Jury Trials.......2004-01-09

The nature of this book does not allow for a full exposition of all aspects of American legal system; rather, it is a heavily illustrated overview and celebration of the major features of American law. The section on the American Jury System is reflective of this approach, briefly sketching the origins of the jury system from the Greeks, William the Conqueror and English jurisprudence and tracing its development in the American legal system. It begins with the sentence: "The jury system is at the heart of American law and our democratic system of government, enshrined in the Constitution." It closes with the phrase "...the right to a trial by jury is a basic and fundamental part of the American justice system and is likely to remain so." While the authors note that at one time American juries routinely excluded women and minorities and also notes that many cases are settled without a trial, it would be a terrible misreading to interpret this section as anything other than a positive celebration of the American jury system.

1 out of 5 stars book says jury trial is going out dated.......2004-01-04

Out of the hundreds of pages in this book there were only 2 about the jury trial. Those pages said the jury trial was outdated. The contempt of the authors for real american law and justice is astounding. Anyone who denigrates the jury trial like this is literaly an enemy of everything america stands for.

              Book Description

Shots at Whitetails is one of Americas all-time favorite deer hunting books. Written in 1948 by the legendary Larry Koller, this book introduced several generations of deer hunters to whitetail hunting.

Even though this oft-quoted book has been out of print more than 25 years, Shots at Whitetails remains part of North Americas deer hunting culture and history. Now as the first book in a new series of classic deer hunting favorites by Deer & Deer Hunting magazine Shots at Whitetails is once again available. Kollers unsurpassed knowledge was amassed while hunting New Yorks Adirondack Mountains. Even though guns and bows have changed since Kollers era, the whitetail remains the same elusive, majestic animal that inspired Shots at Whitetails more than 50 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Deer hunting nostalgia at its best!.......2005-10-22

Larry Koller's 'Shots at Whitetails' is a book that truly captures the spirit and meaning of deer hunting. The book is filled with many helpful tips and strategies, along with many amusing anecdotes. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys hunting whitetail deer. Although some topics are a little outdated, there are foot notes in the margins with up to date information. This book was a pleasure to read, and I enjoyed being brought back to the 1940's to go on a deer hunt with Larry and his buddies.

5 out of 5 stars Like Fine Wine.......2005-05-06

"Shots at Whitetails", published in 1948, became THE deer-hunting book almost instantly. Larry Koller's clear, straightforward writing based on years of hunting Whitetails in the Adirondacks became the primer for generations of deerhunters.
But things change. Rifles, ammo, laws, clothes, and attitudes keep evolving. Even the deer ranges changed. Prior to 1950, Whitetail deer hunting in the Eastern U.S. meant deep woods hunting. But a short 20 years later deer were in huntable populations thorughout much of the farm country of the Midwest and the sport had a new, much different challenge on the tables.
And of course Koller didn't, and couldn't foresee that, thus didn't write about it. So why give this "re-introduced" book five stars?
Whereas "Shots at Whitetails" was an excellent "hands-on, how-to" book for the Eastern Deer Hunter circa 1950s & 60s, it is also an excellent deer hunting book for any U.S. deer hunter in 2005 -but it's value is now on a different plane, a more charming and elevated plane.
For example, Koller's astute discussion of sighting equipment is solid grounding for any rifleman of any era - a snapshot of where it all was, and came from, and a pleasant, unexpected look into Grampa's days afield. "Peep sights" - You gotta be kidding? But No, they were once a very viable and valuable option - the nuances of which were the topic of more than a few heated discussions back at the deer cabin. And reading of the old deer cabin chores and hunt "mechanics" is just as interesting and educational as the old guns and ammo discussions.
Thus "Shots at Whitetails" - once the " Ultimate How-to" book has become the easy and entertaining, and enlighteniing "magic carpet" that peels away the years to let today's deer hunter relish a few days hunting with Grandad in his prime. It's a grand step back beyond ourselves to the place we came from. That's why five stars.

              5 out of 5 stars Still hunter's bible.......2000-11-27

This book is the best deer hunting book in print for the Northeast still hunter. Written in the 40's, not much has changed. Big bucks still live the way they always have in these woods and the hunting tatics have not changed.

If you are a tree stand hunter hunting in farmland or small tracts, this is not the book for you.

If you hunt in the big woods, this is an excellent resource.

                      Book Description

The subject for this study, the Tibetan "treasure revealer" Gshen-chen Klu-dga', is a crucial figure in the development of Bon as an organised religion after the eleventh century. Here for the first time he is situated in the context of what was happening in Buddhism at the time.

By scrutinizing his life and gter-ma ("treasures"), that were to be of much controversy in later ages, Dan Martin sheds light on the mechanism of Tibetan polemical tradition and the ways in which sectarianism accords itself legitimacy by resurrecting ancient arguments in a subtly distorted manner.

The exhaustive annotated bibliography of previous works about Bon, forming the second part of the work, can rightly be seen as a legacy of Gshen-chen. Both parts taken together make this an indispensable guide to any student of Bon.
