Best tour book ever .......2006-11-06

My husband and I used this book when we toured Greece on our honeymoon. Even with the tours that we had taken, we found that this was better. It gave us the best places to see, what we shouldn't miss and the best places to eat gave great explaination of everything. I would recommend this book to anyone. It gave a great variety of things especially price ranges. Loved this book, all my husband would say to me was I need the book, give me the book.

Good overview, easy read........2004-05-27

This is the coffee table book. It's a reasonably quick read and discusses all the Swiss dogs.

Quick Read But Very Basic.......2003-07-26

This book may be appropriate for anyone completely unfamiliar with Mountain Dogs, who also wants a very brief synopsis about each of these wonderful breeds.

To anyone wanting more than that, this book will probably be a disappointment and not worth the money to buy it.

I personally view this book as a waste of money, time and effort. And I generally advise others to avoid this book because there are much better books on the subject matter that are easily available.

I'm still hoping the author of this book will write another edition of this book and expand with a much more comprehensive coverage of each of these breeds. Now that's a book I could be interested in. But this one? I gave it away soon after I bought it.

Great beginning informational reference book on these dogs.......1998-08-22

This book goes into detail about the history of the Mountain Dogs as well as a complete overview of each of the four breeds within this classification. There is not the geneological references that you may find with other books, and I appreciated that fact as someone who just wanted to "get to know the breed" a bit better. The referece delineates the four breeds and compares each. It can be difficult to find information about the three lesser known Mountain Dogs, so for those looking for information about the Appenzeller, this is a great start.

Included, also, is some basic puppy rearing information, including tips on house training, grooming, basic health and breeding.

This book has lovely photos and very detailed information about the Bernese Mtn Dog breed.

Newbie Pet Owners will be impressed by the information and photos, but may find about 1/2 of the book to be relatively useless for them.

However, this book should be incredibly useful to serious Berner people wanting a comprehensive study on Berners in the USA, along with top quality breeding information and study.

The sections on USA Berners, breeding and showing information is incredibly nice to have to study and as a ready reference.

This is a wonderful, lovely and very well written book that every Hardcore Berner person should have!

A beautiful book about gorgeous dogs!.......2001-08-10

I had a great Berner as a companion for 10.5 years before she died. This book is a wonderful tribute to the breed with a detailed history of the breed in this country. It will need to be updated to remain current with activities in the breed, especially genetic testing that is ongoing, but is does a great service to pet owner and breeder with its great descriptions of the standard and discussions of other pertinent matters for breeders, owners, and admirers.

Information is provided to help you decide whether a Bernese Mountain Dog is suitable for your lifestyle. If you already live with a Berner, the book provides helpful hints about diet, exercise, and health care. I give this a Thumbs Up and I know -- I have lived and loved Berners for twenty years.

Foundational Book for Berner People.......2003-07-26

Foundational book for everyone who is owned by a Bernese Mountain Dog. It is written in an easy-to-read manner, is fairly comprehensive and is a quicker read than some of the other Berner books available today.

I recommend this reading for anyone seriously interested in acquiring a Bernese Mountain Dog or for those who own BMDs and want to learn more about the breed.

If you're into American collectibles from the sixties, this isn't recommended. This book is almost exclusively British products. I didn't recognize any of the items as being available in the US either during the sixites here, or widely collected here now.

In the early 1960s, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was a small, multi-racial company of dancers that performed the works of its founding choreographer and other emerging artists. By the late 1960s, the company had become a well-known African American artistic group closely tied to the Civil Rights struggle. In Dancing Revelations, Thomas DeFrantz chronicles the troupe's journey from a small modern dance company to one of the premier institutions of African American culture. He not only charts this rise to national and international renown, but also contextualizes this progress within the civil rights, women's rights, and gay rights struggles of the late 20th century. DeFrantz examines the most celebrated Ailey dances, including Revelations, drawing on video recordings of Ailey's dances, published interviews, oral histories, and his own interviews with former Ailey company dancers. Through vivid descriptions and beautiful illustrations, DeFrantz reveals the relationship between Ailey's works and African American culture as a whole. He illuminates the dual achievement of Ailey as an artist and as an arts activist committed to developing an African American presence in dance. He also addresses concerns about how dance performance is documented, including issues around spectatorship and the display of sexuality, the relationship of Ailey's dances to civil rights activism, and the establishment and maintenance of a successful, large-scale Black Arts institution. In Influencing America's Tastes, Stephanie Thompson offers a new way to understand such late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century women authors as Alcott, Wharton, Cather, Hurst, and Loos by examining their fiction and aesthetics in light of the emerging middlebrow culture of the era. She finds important parallels between the work of these women and the goals of the modernist movement that can offer insights into the complicated relationship between the middlebrow culture and the literary critics who articulated its taste. What is revealed is a combination of cultural and gender politics that marginalized these authors' writing as aesthetically second-rate.

Unlike most feminist analyses of these authors, Thompson concentrates on their aesthetic concerns as expressed in autobiographies, letters, and critical essays, along with close readings of their fiction. She moves beyond the individual writers to consider the ways that scholars and critics have categorized them over time, offering a correction that enlarges our definition of "modernism."

Not only does this book contribute much to the reappraisal of women writers before, during, and after the period that literary scholars have constructed as modernist, but Thompson's understanding of social history and its ideological implications promises to influence current thinking about how literary history is constructed as well.
