Book was helpful, but maps are so-so.......2007-09-28

This small guide was very helpful to a recent short trip to Athens. The recommendations of where to visit and day-by-day tours were good. It was nice that the guide was small and fit in my back pocket. However, the maps leave something to be desired. You might want to purchase additional Athens maps to go along with the book, or ask your hotel for some.

My wife and i were in athens for 3 days and this little book was always in my pocket. it was very useful for us the entire trip. although some of the restaurant suggestions i'd question that's to be expected. the rest of the information was excellent. i found myself referring to the maps and area descriptions constantly. well worth the investment.

Nice overview of Athens' attractions.......2006-08-20

The book has good maps in addition to narrative. We used the "Eating" section and "Directory" most heavily, since we are not shoppers and had arranged a hotel through alternative means. We also used the Eyewitness "Top 10" guide and "Streetwise Athens" map, which provide additional perspectives.

It's out of date........2006-07-02

I guess I should have known that a 2004 guide to Athens is out of date in 2006. It hasn't been updated to reflect the fact that the metro now connects to the airport, and its Acropolis ticket info. is misleading--the Acropolis ticket is good for one visit only, not for four days. The free guide to Athens published by the Ministry of Tourism ("Wonderful Greece") has much better walking tours.

Science has at the same time the power to do great good, and great evil, sometimes at the same time. For the 'honor' of the greatest evil that science has done to mankind there would be many candidates: poison gas, the Atomic bomb come to mind, but by any standard of inhumanity the organization and operation of the holocaust has to rank quite high.

For the 'Final Solution' the skills of many professions were required:

It was among the first applications of data processing using IBM punched card equipment to identify those with Jewish grandparents as 'Jews.'

The operation of the roundup and transportation of Jews to the camps was a major transportation effort, especially after the Allied implemented the 'Transportation Plan' to systematically attach transportation within Germany. In spite of all the other needs for transportation to support their armies, the trains kept running to the camps.

Then, of course came the killing camps themselves, organized with Teutonic efficiency down to signs that would calm the new arrivals even as the Germans prepared to kill them.

This book is a series of essays on the use of science and technology in organized murder.

I can't help but close with a comment about the recent revisionist historians who argue that the Holocaust didn't take place. Not once do I see a defendent at Nurnberg present the defense that this didn't take place, and these people were on trial for their lives.

This book has tons of useful information, but the info is all jumbled about, making it hard to find the information you need. The index is hardly comprehensive, making it impossible to look up a botanical name to find out what it means. This book is valuable, but you will waste time trying to find what you need.

This is just a small paperback without an index, but there might have been a hardcover in 1973, when the author, a Professor of Humanities, was sixty years old. What I have is the first Vintage Books edition, September 1974. According to the Contents, the book has five parts. The best for me was:

III. An Interlude of Farce (pp. 39-63).

Page 45 quotes FINNEGANS WAKE and a songwriter who is now over 60:

His farced epistol. [FW, 228]
Subsequently the name for the interludes of impromptu buffoonery which the actors in the religious dramas were accustomed to interpolate in their text.
Bob Dylan:
There must be some way out of here
Said the joker to the priest.

The Preface balances four lines from FINNEGANS WAKE with five lines from Vico's NEW SCIENCE.

AS INCREDIBLY INTELLIGENTLY FUNNY AS FINNEGANS WAKE: PLEASE BOX SET HIS ENTIRE SERIES FROM SIX YEARS AGO.......2006-10-19

This collection of word play and punning and Wakian wonderful phonetic hairsplitting, as the paradoxical title indicates, is some of the most side splitting and INTELLIGENT humor since James Joyce write Ulysses laughing the night away to the long-suffering complaint of his less literate wife.

This book is worth learning Spanish for. It's not that hard. Really. But if you conquer this level of Spanish, understanding cliche's and their puns and implications, and hearing other words within their homophones, you have truly learned all there is to know of Spanish, and, please, explain some of this to me, too!

If the Derbez television series was not still in heavy rebroadcast now over univision in snippets, giving some hearty meat to the currently thin comedic gruel, perhaps someone would come to their senses and BOX SET the entire "DERBEZ en cuando" series on DVD and let us get it. Right now only one brief and hollowly represetnational DVD sampler is available.

DERBEZ is truly is the most intellectual, parodic, hilarious humor since Mr. Joyce's pen fell silent, and is far superior to the other ubiquitous popular box set series like Seinfeld and Family Guy. Meanwhile in America we uncompassionately believe humor nothing more than jackasses getting their gonads squeezed.

This book is a must read. Like Finnegans Wake, much of it is phonetic punning (Spanish unlike English is a truly phonetic language) and word play on cliches; so you may wish to read it out loud to get the true meaning (like the Wake). And do go out and bug your native Spanish, in particular Mexican, friends to explain (but not kill) the robust humor from cover to cover

This is worth opening our borders if not our minds for.
