    Book Description

Morphogeny of the nasal skull was investigated in 92 embryos of 13 species of Cetacea. Compared to the original nasal capsule of land mammals, the nasal structures of Cetacea show many weighty transformations. As a result, the nostrils are translocated from the tip of the snout to the vertex of the head. Several structures of the embryonic nasal skull remain preserved even in adult cetaceans. The translocation of the nostrils to the highest point of the surfacing body is among the most perfect adaptations of cetaceans to the aquatic life habits. The morphogeny of the nasal skull suggests that all cetaceans are of common origin and form a single monophyletic order. The hitherto usual division of this order into two suborders, Mysticeti and Odontoceti, appears to be unsubstantiated. Rather, at least three closely related superfamilies should be distinguished within the order Cetacea, viz., Balaenopteroidea, Physeteroidea, and Delphinoidea. The results are in a

    3 out of 5 stars A springboard to savings.......2006-06-01

Bought this book a couple of weeks before traveling to Israel. Guidebooks invariably save you much more than the money you spend in buying them, and this book was not an exception. Found it very informative and easy to read. We visited Israel at Passover and Easter (Orthodox)--were there from April 17 through April 24, 2006. It was a busy tourist season and the book proved helpful in making first night's reservation in Tel Aviv (at Hotel Nes Ziona). [Next day we found a comparable but cheaper hotel (Hotel Eilat, not mentioned in Let's Go) not too far away and moved there.] Generally speaking, in lodging and eating we found prices higher than those cited in the book. This was expected as the book was printed in 2003 based on research done in August 2000 and the publisher had warned the readers they "may have different experiences since prices, dates, hours, and conditions are subject to change." Let's Go Israel covers Jerusalem, most favorite Israeli destination, extensively. Though I believe it should have mentioned the possibility of staying in West Bank (say in Bethlehem which is hardly 20 minutes from Jerusalem) and making day trips to the big city.

On a lighter note, the book doesn't warn readers about dog poop that is found everywhere on Tel Aviv sidewalks. Apparently Israelis are not too scrupulous about cleaning after their pets, if such laws exist in Israel.

4 out of 5 stars why all the hate?.......2006-01-12

I've been living in Israel for about four months... saw this in my friend's room and fell in love with it! Seems to be very well-tied-in with the culture, pointing out interesting items "off the beaten path"... Never saw the Frommer's but in any case this is a whole heck of a lot better than the Rough Guide I bought. Anyway, I'm going to probably buy this.

3 out of 5 stars Outdated and Incorrect..........2005-08-06

While there was a lot of great ideas and information in this book, the phone numbers and address sites that were listed were EXTREMELY inaccurate. The maps in it were excellent. I just think that it is very important to review the information and put in up-to-date material. Especially in this time of turmoil, this is the most recent publication in all of our searches for Israel trips. So as far as that goes, I guess it's better than nothing. I also think that there should be a choice of accomodations listed, as opposed to just Youth Hostels and "cheap-end" accomodations, my wife and I were often looking for moderate hotels, but there were never any listed in this book. Until an updated book is published, this should be the one that you go with if you are looking for a tourbook of Israel.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money on this Book.......2005-01-31

From the inaccuracies in the so-called historical review to the inaccurate descriptions of non-existent "perils and pitfalls" and the failure to describe the real areas of concern, it's hard to believe the author of this guidebook has ever been to Israel. Buy Frommers and use the on-line updates.

    2 out of 5 stars what a disaster.......2004-10-24

I borrowed two guide books from the library, had then special order this,,,,, what a bad guidebook, I am an experinced traveller and found this unusable for trip planning. This is what you get when you let eighteen year olds write travel guides. Give it a skip, and buy the frommers and use the internet to fill the blanks. I lead tour groups, and need decent information.

Checkerbee has updated its Hallmark Value Guide and it is better than ever. It shows every ornament that Hallmark has produced from 1973 up to and included the soon to be released 2001 year. It also shows Merry Minuatures and Kiddie Cars. All with pictures and all with a secondary market price, (to be used as a guide only!)

One of the best things that I like about this guide is that all series ornaments are pictured together. You can easily see which ones in the series that you have!

There are spaces to record your own collection, interviews with several artists and helpful articles that deal with collecting. An alphabetical index in the back is very helpful too!

            Book Description

Decks are popular in North American landscapes because they serve as outdoor sanctuaries. They are in the back yard, where life is quiet and less hectic. The deck is the perfect place to read the Sunday paper, listen to a ballgame, or entertain when the weather's nice. But a large, flat expanse of deck isn't all that exciting. Often, decks look bare and uninviting and can take up valuable gardening space.

With DECKSCAPING, learn to landscape on and around your deck. Landscaping and planting techniques help create the feeling that the deck is surrounded by the garden while hiding the deck's unsightly undercarriage. Add structure and privacy to the deck by building a lattice-covered pergola and growing climbing vines on it for shade. Containers planted with flowers, herbs, or vegetables bring the garden, with its fragrances, butterflies, birds, and wildlife, right up onto the deck. Running low on space? Attach hanging baskets and planter boxes to the railing. What you plant around your deck is just as important as what you plant around your house.

In addition to teaching landscaping and planting techniques, DECKSCAPING provides decorating tips on furniture, ornaments, and water features that strengthen the link between indoor and outdoor rooms. Homeowners will also learn how to evaluate a deck, analyze its usefulness and effectiveness, and identify options to improve it so that it is comfortable, safe, and appealing.

Winner of the Medieval Academy of America's Haskins Medal for 1991, The Narrators of Barbarian History treats the four writers who are the main early sources for our knowledge of the Ostrogoths, Franks, Anglo-Saxons, and Lombards. In his preface to this paperback edition, Goffart examines the questions his work has evoked since its original publication in 1988 and enlarges the bibliography to account for recent scholarship.

Gregory of Tours: The Merovingians Readings in Medieval Civilizations and Cultures: X Edited by Alexander Callander Murray

Georgius Florentius Gregorius, better known to posterity as Gregory, Bishop of Tours, was born about 538 to a highly distinguished Gallo-Roman family in Clermont in the region of Auvergne. Best known for his 10-book Histories (often called the History of the Franks), Gregory left us detailed accounts of his own times as well as those of the early Merovingian kings, known as the "long-haired kings," who united the Franks and took control of most of Gaul in the late fifth and early sixth century. Although he is one of the most important historians of pre-modern times, the complex, apparently disconnected, elements of Gregory's work are often difficult for today's readers to understand. This selected, new translation is composed of extensive sections from Books II to X and follows in a connected narrative the political events of the Histories from the appearance of the first Merovingian kings, Merovech, Childeric, and Clovis to the last years of the reigns of Guntram and Childebert II in the late sixth century. This book is designed to introduce new readers, and even experienced ones, to the political world (secular and ecclesiastical) of sixth-century Gaul and to provide an up-to-date guide to reading the bishop of Tours' fascinating account of his times.

Included in this volume are twenty-one drawings by Jean-Paul Laurens, a nineteenth-century French historical artist and interpreter of the Merovingians.

3 out of 5 stars Abridged Gregory of Tours - Not worth your time.......2007-10-03

Gregory of Tour's (538-594), History of the Franks, is a momentous piece of history that gives historians immense amounts of information on Merovingian Gaul. However, because of the length of the work (approx. 620 normal size pages) some editors/translators (Murray and Brehaut for example) have thought it prudent to abridge the text to give you the most important sections etc. However, this edition is simply expensive, simplistic, lacking, and brief. A MUCH better and substantially cheaper text is [[ASIN:0140442952 A History of the Franks (Penguin Classics)]}. Not only does the Penguin edition have a much more substantial introduction (which provides the read the historical background and importance of the text) but has the same aids that this edition boasts (notes, footnotes, character lists, map, genealogies) for easier comprehension of a chaotic time. Gregory of Tours, Bishop of Tours, writes in a simplistic style with GREAT detail but is not at all difficult to understand thus no need to abridge - Gregory also provides chapter headings that describe aptly the episodes (of which he is sometimes involved) so the reader can easily see what is most important. This edition is simply inferior to the Penguin edition. The text definitely deserves 5 stars but this edition does great injustice to the reader.

                      Book Description

Our lives are built on essential but mundane things: food, shelter, families, neighbors, work, and play. Our activities rarely rise to headline-making greatness, and the same holds true for the majority of people throughout history. Yet it's the unremembered details of people's everyday struggles and successes that have shaped history and continue to drive the world we know. Based in part on Greenwood's award-winning Daily Life through History series, The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Daily Life offers an unprecedented look at human history's living heart: the billions of anonymous man and women too often forgotten by historical studies, but without whose lives human history would be meaningless. Providing unparalleled breadth and depth, this six-volume set is organized both thematically and chronologically. Each volume comprises seven chapters that span the realm of everyday life:
                    • Material Life
                    • Religious Life
                    • Domestic Life
                    • Political Life
                    • Recreational Life
                    • Intellectual Life
                    • Economic Life Panoramic overview articles show the full range and interconnections of everyday life throughout history. General topics are then broken into component parts, each of which is explored in detailed essays. The chronological and thematic organizations, aided by concept compasses that graphically show interconnections and act as visual navigational cues, reflect how students really learn. All regions of the world are covered at various points in their histories. Helpful research features include:
                    • Historical Overviews
                    • Concept Compasses
                    • Numerous Illustrations and Maps

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Writing Theses.......2005-02-14

This is an excellent, excellent series, and I highly reccomend it to anyone who is writing a thesis that includeds scenes from daily life in the past. I wrote my thesis on the idiom, "THe Pen is Mightier Than the Sword: Con Side" and this book was a great way for me to quickly and easily find refrences and examples.

                      This book is a life-saver.

                          Book Description

For 1400 years Gregory's Histories--the principal work of Merovingian history--have been understood as a "history of the Franks" and as an objective portrayal of history, albeit told by a naive narrator. This completely new interpretation of the Histories reveals connections between apparently unconnected, adjacent chapters, and also begins to make out their real function. Gregory (538-594) can be seen as focusing on the development of a socio-political concept of society, which anticipates the leadership of the Christian state entrusted to the joint government of bishops and king.

                                Book Description

Tree is the second installment in Ralph Lemon's critically acclaimed performance trilogy and documents his travels through India, Indonesia, China and Japan as he retraces the Buddha migration map. More artistic sociologist than mere traveler, Lemon kept journals, drew, collected ephemera, conducted informal interviews, and took photos as he explored performance traditions and met the performers with whom he would eventually choreograph an evening-length work. In the process, he worked through his own preconceptions and misconceptions about the people and the places he encountered. Tree is ritually structured, and reveals a rich collision of cultural values pertaining to performance, race, identity, modernity and tradition. Like the first installment in the trilogy, Geography (Wesleyan, 2000), this book is exquisitely designed and lavishly illustrated to allow the reader to follow and interpret Lemon's observations and his creative process.

The world premiere of the final part of the trilogy, House, will be at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana, Illinois in September, 2004. Additional U.S. and international performances will follow.
