Customer Reviews:
Fun and Helpful.......2007-09-10
I loved the witticisms and the good advice. My only complaint is that it is a bit big to carry around.
Excellent, Information Guide.......2007-08-23
This guide gives up-to- date informative information for the traveler visiting London for the first time. The tips, especially if you are traveling on a budget, are very helpful. I would recommend this , or any of his guides, if you are planning on traveling abroad.
Enough Already.......2007-08-11
I've had it with the Rick Steves Groupie crowd. We just came back from a month long trip in Europe and the only people anyone with the Rick Steves guides are meeting are other Americans with the same guidebooks. They all eat in the same restaurants and they all go to the same places. Europe Through the Back Door? Not hardly. It's Europe through the SAME door. Read a guidebook before you go somewhere, but leave it home. Have a small pocket map of some sort along with you and then ASK questions from locals when you get there. The whole idea of travel is to meet new people, enjoy a different culture and have some fun. The purpose is NOT to check things off a "to see" list.
The inside scoop.......2007-07-12
This book has been the most helpful of the three I ordered. I am looking forward to carrying it around London. His comments are always down to earth, just like his tv series. I know his information is current and is in common language that is easy to understand.
Great Book.......2007-06-26
This book saves you lots of time and energy planning a trip. Steves even walks you through museums down to every corridor. Great book - we would have been lost without it!

Since the publication of its first issue in 1992, Ray Gun has set the perimeters of the cutting edge in publishing. Abandoning such conventions as headlines, columns, and even page numbers, the alternative rock-and-roll magazine created a chaotic, abstract style that broke all the rules, clearing the way for a slew of fringe magazines devoted as much to style as to substance. This self-consciously hip, unconventional approach soon emerged on album covers, concert posters, and MTV, signaling the birth of a bona fide movement. The same irreverent approach to production is applied to Ray Gun: Out of Control, forcing you to wade through a maze of random graphics and typefaces to unearth the articles and essays. The search is half the fun, though, as the pieces are enough to capture your interest, even against the backdrop of so much graphic noise.
Customer Reviews:
ray gun - out of control.......2000-11-05
this book is a collection of spreads from the early years of raygun and other magazines whose art direction was lead by david carson. there is a lot of controversy surrounding carson's work, and carson as a graphic designer. i find the work visually stimulating and closer to art than most design i've encountered. i personally admire the intuitive beauty of this book and have spent countless hours looking at it. while i do not recomend carson's other books i do recomend this one.
Collection on the shelf.......1999-07-30
This book is for the Raygun collectors who admires clever typographic layout. A collector's item.
out of gas.......1999-07-15
As the elite of contemporary typograhpy will tell you, Art Director David Carsons was neither type designer nor graphic designer, but instead adept collector of typefaces and free favors from young talent. This book is an attempt, on the eve of the sellout of the Ray Gun Empire, to solidify the merit of a magazine built on 2 things: hype, and the desire of the design community and its afficionados to find a voice for the explosion of creativity ignited by the early macintosh design pioneers and their disciple, Ed Fella, while, initially at least, disregarding the need for relevant indie music reporting. Don't buy it.
Out of Control pushes the envelope.......1997-07-31
Use this book for ideas that will stun and amaze your staid audience whether it be in print or on the Web. I look at it as one giant idea book - it pushes the limit of type and design and gives us a new art form
A magazine picture book?.......1997-07-28
"Out of Control?"
I don't get it. Is this a picture book, or a book that is supposed to honor the magazine? Magazines are about content and design, but here all we get is design. Now, I like design, I like it a lot, and hope to one day get into magazine desiggn, but this book seems to undermine what the magazine should be about. Design vs. Content. How well does the design and presentation relate to the article? I have no idea from looking at this. This is a picture book. From looking at this from a distance (which you are apparently supposed to do) Ray Gun is a nicely laid out and designed magazine. But what's it about? I love design, but I don't give a damn about a publication about information (no matter hhow good the design) if I can't have access to that information. As far as I'm concerned, this collection should showcase and celebrate the representation of information. IAs I've said, I enjoy the design and designers, but Ray Gun was started as a great means of maing the aarticles fun to read...lure the reader in with the design and hook 'em with the words. This may or may not have worked, but the intention was there. No matter how much of a design magazine this is, Ray Gun is the bible of mushc ansstyle, not a graphic design monthly. I think that this collection is a slap in the face to the people who wrote the articles in the mag. Buy "Out of Control" if you want a picture book, but if you want to get any idea at all about what the actual magazine is about, bo to the periodicals section and pick it up.

It's ok..........2007-01-12
I work at a private Humane Society as an adoption adviser and ocasionaly pick up books to recomend to people. There are better ones out there than this one.
It has alot of good things in it but plenty for the first time owner to avoid.
There was alot of "old school" thinking in here.
I would caution people too (like the book) about dogs you get at shelters. The over crowded ones can be hard to go through and the people who work there can't spend as much time with each dog to know them all well. But there are ALOT of good ones out there that know their dogs! And alot of good dogs at the over crouded ones. I always recomend an adult dog over a puppy. ESPECIALY if you are short on time! This book should not recomend a young (8weeks-6months)puppy.
I didn't like the training techniques.
Too "hands on". You shouldn't have to force a dog with your hands to get it to do somthing. It's all about comunication.
For instance her sit training. You should not have to push its butt down. Otherwise the dog may learn that the signal to sit is when you touch it's butt. Also this is not a good technique to use with new or shy dogs.
We had a dog at our shelter who would sit at the slightest touch of it's rear. It was sad becouse we couldn't teach it to conect sitting with the word "sit". It would only sit if you touched its back end. Poor thing.
Also I wouldn't recomend spraying your dog with flea spray or using flea collars. They are not effective or safe. If that's what we used at our shelter we would have flea problems.
Again there are some good things but I wouldn't use this as your only resorce.
It's not clear where or if this author has had any formal training in dog behavior. I don't think she has.
There is one book I recomend for all owners new and old.
"The Other End of the Leash"
This is written by a dog proffesional.
She also has ALOT of experience.
She has a very good insite on dog and people relationships.
Also check out these orginazations for helpfull free advice:
the ASPCA (has a website),
Dumb Friends League (a small shelter -not mine- that has a website),
and the Humane Society of the United States (also has a website).
Again not a book I would recomend for the avrage owner.
Even if You and your doG aren't Catholic ..........2006-03-01
this is still the best little book on Bringing Up Baby. It is concise, coherent, with comical pictures, and tells you everything you ever wanted to know about raising a good citizen canine without a full-time-stay-at-home doggie nanny, with less than 40 acres, without guilt for you or undue trauma for your puppy2dog.

A book for people living on planet earth.......2000-04-05
This book is in my top 5 of doggie books. If you work, and even if you don't, read this book. The writer lives on planet earth with the rest of us and our dogs. I wish I'd read it first and I may not have needed the 48 of the 50 others I read also. My dog has been saved. It turned back into a normal dog, and I once again live a normal life, after I followed the recommendations in this very easy to read book. It gives some very valuable insights into how to care for your dog on planet earth. The writer should be congratulated for promoting responsible dog ownership. Most writers are too busy promoting themselves.
A responsible book for people willing to make the effort.......1999-11-19
I got this book in 94 or 95 and ultimately it changed my life. Previously I had thought, as a full-time worker in a rented house, I could not offer a home to any of the many unwanted dogs in the UK. This book encouraged me to look at the possibilities - arrange a neighbour to come to the house at lunchtime - ask the landlords nicely, having arranged 3rd party insurance for the dog - find out what dogs *were* happy to sleep in the day - arrange walks and training and toys for them when I was there - how to avoid separation anxiety - that sort of thing. I now have a middleaged retired racing greyhound and an elderly Whippet and foster retired (2 years old and up!) racing greyhounds. And somewhere down the line, dogs lives are saved. The book is realistic about dog ownership - the poo, the pee, the vomit, the hair, the chewed things, the barking, the exercise whatever the weather - and makes you face up to it. I would recommend it to *all* prospective dog owners, whether short of time & space or not - the quiz at the start on "whether you are suited" (q: the dog comes racing through the living room with your underwear in its mouth. Do you a) scold the dog b) laugh and do nothing c) gently take it from the dog, praise it, and remind yourself not to leave it on the bedroom floor in future?)
Huh???????.......1999-02-04
If you're short on time and space, then DON'T GET A DOG!!!!!!!!! Rescue organizations around the country will thank you. If you don't have the time to devote to the proper care of a dog, then you are just asking for trouble by getting one. Please think twice.

Historical background plus valuable information on manufacturing techniques and marks is also included. With values provided in the captions and an extensive bibliography, this is a wonderful book for new and experienced collectors of figural silver novelties.

Loads of Luxe.......2006-02-13
The only thing I wish was included in this book were more ordinary items the average collector mught come upon.
Outside of that, the presentation, the color pages, and the written information is very detailed and sure to please.
Inspired to collect !.......2003-03-12
This book is written in such a way that both novice and expert collectors will learn a great deal about silver. It offers both history and culture to the reader. The author makes it impossible to put the book down. "Silver Novelties in The Gilded Age" by Deb Crosby has inspired me to collect!...

Customer Reviews:
Must have this book.......2007-08-08
It is a wonderful reference book! The pictures are great and it is easy to identify the culprit in the garden. The recomended treatments are easy to understand. It is a must have book for every gardner.
I also feel that the price for this book is fair for the information that it contains.
Happy camper.......2007-08-02
Being a certified nurseryman,I have found this book to be an invaluable tool for customer service and to boost sales. I just wish Ortho would take the professional edition and split it into maybe four books to make it more manageable.
Oustanding.......2007-03-27
I bought this book and the pictures are outstanding. They are all life like, not sketches. It is very easy to read. This book talks about insects, climate and soil and other topics to numerous to remember.
The Garden Problem Solver.......2007-01-09
This is the paperback version of the hardback you will find at most gardening stores. You will find all answers. You look up the plant you are having troubles with in the index. Then go to the plant page. It gives the typical pests/ailment with photos for clear identification. And an easy fix. Great for someone just getting into gardening.
THIS ONE HAS MADE MY LIFE MUCH SIMPLER.......2006-09-30
I simply am not sure if I could garden without this one. This is one of the best, most comprehensive works addressing the hundreds of problems one who grows plants encounters. I particularly find the section of plant disease most helpful. The discriptions and photos are be best that I have found in any work and the solutions, when there is a solution, is always quite on the money and most helpful. The text is not overly technical and easy to follow. The book is arraigned and organized in a way that you can actually find what you need. Unlike many such publications, Ortho does not exclusively push their own products (they do, but not to the point of being obnoxious about it) and I find this rather refreshing. They also are quick to point out that if a problem is a lost cause, then it is a lost cause. I appreciate that too. I am quite glad I have this one in by collection of plant care books and do highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
For every gardener's bookshelf.......2003-05-24
Anyone who is serious about gardening needs this book. The four page section on "How a Plant Works" is crammed with valuable information that will help almost anyone become a better gardener. The book starts by helping the reader identify symptoms that will help you reach a diagnosis of the problem. Color coded pages lead you to the chapter you'll need - Lawns, Trees etc, then you'll find a photo illustrating the problem, a map to assure that it does indeed occur in your area, an analysis of the issue and suggestions for solutions or at least for ameliorating the problem.
There is a vast amount of information in this book, well, organized and very readable. You can flip through quickly and easily to find the garden problem that's bothering you, and its solution. The research is thorough, and the consultants list is first class. There are a generous appendices that guide the reader to plants that are disease resistant and away from plants that are susceptible to specific problems.
This is a valuable book that should be on every gardener's bookshelf.
If you are a gardener, or an insectophobiac, get this book!.......2001-04-17
Ortho kills bugs, pests and diseases. This book is indispensable for any serious or semi-serious gardener. Where there is growth there will be "anti-growth" force. The wilted vine, the brown grass, yellow spots on leaves, discolored needles, clusters of pink soft-bodied insects and, yes, garden fans, gray grubs with brown heads are all part of the "anti-growth" force.
This problem solving book has excellent color photos illustrating every problem you could possibly encounter. The layout below the photo is simple, yet very effective: Problem, Analysis, Solution. No book in my gardening library is used more.
"The Ortho Home Gardener's Problem Solver" even has a section for household pests (sorry, no section for your neighbor's barking dog). If it has a downside, it is that it is published by a chemical company which means that there are NO organic solutions. By-in-large Ortho's motto is "if it is alive, we can kill it chemically." This is the definitive reference tool for the home gardener. Highly recommended.

The Ortho Home Gardener's Problem Solver.......2000-11-01
I am currently taking a college class in Plant Pest Management and this is the textbook for the class. I think it is a good book, but one thing I didn't like about it that the description of the pest is broken up by the plant instead of the pest. I think it makes finding the problem a little difficult, and it does leave out some we are studying in class. One thing I noticed is that the solutions are all Ortho products, but I guess they would think they have the best solutions..... Any way the Professional edition is more complete, but much more expensive and this should help most gardeners.
Using this book will make you throw away all the rest!.......1998-12-21
The Ortho Home Gardener's Problem Solver, in this condensed version, is a modern Horticulturalist's Bible" for anyone who tends to fret over plants that grow between two property lines, whether be it grass or daisey's. The unabridged version is a little pricier than this one, coming in at $100, give or take a few bucks, but both answer most of anyone's gardening problems.

Customer Reviews:
Full of honesty and hope.......2002-08-24
Billy Moore's book was completely honest. It wasn't perfect, but it was full of hope, especially for readers who can identify with his life. I felt like he worded so many things perfectly - brutally, yet tactfully, honest. BUT I put it down
wanting to know more, so the ending was a bit weak in that aspect. All in all though, Mr. Moore writes with intense, raw emotion and as a reader, I felt privileged to be let into such a world as what he describes. Eloquently written, this book was very hard to put down until the last page was turned.
An outside opinion.......2002-07-09
YN1 Moore's book was exceptional. Not only was it extremely well written, but it allowed the reader to dive into the mind of a human being who struggled through a lot to get where he is today. The book gave great insight into a man who has dealt with racism and streotypes, and came out on top of it all. It was an inspiring text that I would suggest to other readers who are in need of a good story line about triumph over adversity. Bravo Zulu YNI.
Superb and absolutely wonderful!.......2001-02-18
The author's story is a beautiful, heart-rending, and hopeful one. I read it from cover to cover before I stopped, but didn't stop thinking about it for some time. Camus postulated that Sisyphus had achieved - or would achieve- happiness. I admire the author giving the Nez Perce Chief- given name- not his Christian name. It's good to know an English major who unapologetically begins sentences with And and But. Especially long sentences which have already used considerable punctuation are only made difficult to read and understand if not punctuated with a period. And- "and" and "but" often go off on a bit of a tangent that begs its own sentence. My heart hurts for the writer's tribulations, but is elevated by his arduously attained success. Italy, with the Italian language, is the crowning jewel of his struggle. The author is remarkable in that his views, his attitudes, even criticism do not seem to bear the influence of left or right- but seems to proceed from a deep sense of what is fair, good, right, just. It was a great pleasure to see the author's choices of quotes and poem selections were of enduring literature. I am glad the university did not dumb him down to the popular notion in education that what has not stood the test of time is better to read than what endures in spite of such a notion. He has much wisdom at a young age. The work showed rare form by appreciating what is good about religion- and how its dependence upon a book which bears the biases of a scienceless people, hurts people who cannot help their unique differences. I wish some wise admiral would read his book and put him in charge of creating a new vision of the Navy and the military in general. A great read and very insightful.
Get "energy" from this book.......2001-01-11
I really appreciated this book. I found it full of positive thoughts about growing up and learning how to face (and often to bear) authorities: our parents, the church, the military... The author always had his own way to overcome difficulties, and his book inspires and enpowers the reader with "energy" for a better point of view in our own lives. I'm glad the author enjoyed my country, Italy: I think the time he spent here influenced his style too, that is elegant, plain and descriptive, with a special thought for feelings. Moreover, thaks to this book I had a less stereotyped look to the real America.
