Best of the crop........2006-03-28

We spent a week in the LA area visiting a long term resident and used this book every day! We wanted to visit both tourist sites and places off the beaten track, and were able to do both. Our family had a diverse list of places to go and things to do - see a star or two, visit hollywood, visit some ethnic areas (such as Little Saigon for an article for chaobannewsletter.com), visit an aquarium, eat family friendly food, hit the beaches, go to an amusement park, etc. It helped us with everything.

My only quibble is that we could have used even more family oriented advice and recommendations.

I looked at five or six guidebooks before picking this one - both because I have used their guides before and because it seemed to do the best job with details and off the beaten track exploration. This definately was the right choice. We used it every single day - to plan, to get to each place and also to eat.

As usual you don't get disappointments from LP.......2005-09-04

These guides are always helpful. There is something for everyone. There's a good mix of everything you could want; from shopping to dinners etc etc. I've always found their books to be 99% acurate (as far as prices etc for sights), and they are well detailed. This book is no different. You'll find your travels much easier with this.

This book presents in a very readable format[12x8x1/2.] history from ancient times to the present.Short 2-4 page chapters with photos and illustrations from artists from different eras.From cave dwellers to skyscrapers.A good unbiased foundation of history that inspires one to furthur readings if one is so inclined.

A must-read for lawn enthusiasts........2006-11-22

I could not have been happier with this book, as it really is about as comprehensive of a guide as you can get. It tells you everything you will ever need to know in order to have a great southern (or mid-atlantic) lawn. But whats great is that it is a fun, easy read. For the most part it is written in everyman speak, so if you are a novice you will not be put off with boring technical data. However, that doesn't mean it's meant solely for newbies, because it also delves into some of the more sophisticated aspects of turf grass such as soil pH and pore space. The only thing I thought could have been done better was that the author kind of glazes over what to do if you have a heterogeneous lawn. He discusses bermudagrass and fescue grass, but not what do if you have the two duking it out in your backyard, as so many of us do. Also, one important thing that should be mentioned is that if you are looking for information on grwoing an "organic" lawn, then this may not necessarily be the book for you (good luck with the organic lawn! hee hee). Basically if you have the time and motivation needed to make your lawn the best it can be, and just need the know-how, then this is the book for you.

A complete guide for warm season grasses.......2005-04-30

This book covers all the main grass types common to warm season and transitional lawns. Each grass type includes wonderful photographs of the grass, how to maintain that grass with particular emphasis on mowing, watering, fertilization (both when and what to use), aerating, dethatching, topdressing, weed controls, and major pests and diseases that attack that grass. The last 1/3 of the book includes a month-by-month timetable of what to do to make your southern lawn the best it can be which in itself is well worth the price.

Charming Tale of a Dancer during the 1930s.......2004-07-21

This charming story of Peggy Morrison's life as a dancer during the depression years is told through the actual letters that she sent home to family members describing her day to day life. Her dynamic personality is captured in her own words and is a window into the hard times that she survived with style and grace. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of her travels overseas at a time when cruise ships were the only way go and war was looming on the horizen. This story would be enjoyable for anyone interested in show business during the 1930s. A very sylish lady!

A loving, meticulously researched, and critical biography of Frederick William "Peter" Twort by his son, Antony Twort. The elder Twort, working with George Ingram, was the first to publish (1912) a method for isolating and culturing the extremely fastidious Mycobacterium paratuberculosis, the bacterium that causes Johne's disease, or chronic dysentery of cattle. He was also the independent co-discoverer, along with Félix d'Hérelle, of bacteriophage (viruses that prey upon bacteria), and the first to publish a report (1915) on the subject. After these initial successes, which earned him a Fellowship in the Royal Society, he spent the rest of his increasingly unhappy professional life trying to find conditions under which viruses, which he thought to be a primitive life form, would grow independently of their host cells, and engaging in endless skirmishes with the bureaucracy that funded his research. He was forced into retirement after his laboratory was bombed during World War II. Supplemented with 25 pages of black-and-white photos, one drawing, a facsimile reproduction of the 1915 paper "An Investigation on the Nature of Ultra-Microscopic Viruses," and an excellent index. This is a lovely book, full of practical advice, good ideas and useful tips. It's well written and easy to follow, perfect for anyone interested in adding stone to the garden or creating a garden in a stony site. But even those who may not have an application for the book will enjoy Dency Kane's gorgeous photographs. It's a great book for perusing and dreaming.

"Jaws" says it all........2005-03-02

Darrell Waltrip; successfully driver; annoying FOX-TV commentator tells his story in "A Lifetime Going Around in Circles".

I find that the information is provided in a haphazard manner; and occasionally appears out-of-chronological order. The end-of-chapter segments, "Oh...by the way" seem misplaced; and serve only as placeholders.

Overall; "Jaws" does a successful job of illustrating his racing career.

Mostly swagger not substance........2004-05-21

An interesting book but the book doesn't finish as well as Darrell Waltrip did on the racetrack. I'm a recent NASCAR enthusiast/fan and I thought this would be a good read in getting some background and learning about the sport from someone with a great deal of experience. On the positive side the book is an easy read and Waltrip and accomplished storyteller. The main problem I had with the book is that we go through life with Waltrip but neither the reader nor writer seems to "learn" from that life. The point of life experience is to learn. Through different experiences(crashes, sponsor politicking, family) Waltrip says he has changed but you never get the feeling that he really has. The book excesses with self-confidence and bravado which makes sense considering Mr. Waltrips profession. But almost to the point that he comes off as not being self-aware. He rarely owns up to mistakes and when things do go wrong someone else is to blame. If that?s the worst part of the book then its a minor complaint. I only wish I could have learned more about and from Darrell Waltrip. The book is entertaining and gives a great overview of the growth of NASCAR from dirt to Daytona all in the span of one entertaining mans lifetime.

THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT FROM START TO FINISH. I AM A DARRELL WALTRIP FAN AND HAVE BEEN SINCE 1989 WHEN I STARTED WATCHING RACING. I DID NOT GET TO SEE HIM WIN THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS. READING THIS BOOK IS THE NEXT BEST THING. I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THOSE YEARS AND SOME THINGS ABOUT THE TIME FROM 1989 ON THAT I DIDN'T KNOW!
EVEN IF DW IS NOT YOUR FAVORITE DRIVER YOU WILL ENJOY THIS BOOK. IT IS VERY ENTERTAINING. DW HAS SOME GREAT STORIES TO TELL IN THIS BOOK!

Darrell's THE MAN.......2004-02-29

I have a couple of moments in NASCAR history that stand out to me, as a fan, more than any others...I guess #1 would be that infamous day when Bobby and Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough got into it, then there was Davey Allison's tragic death...well actually I have a lot of memories, but right up at THE TOP with all of them is DW doing the icky shuffle after winning the Daytona 500. These things solidified my love of the sport and Darrell Waltrip. A lot of this is in the book , with some witty outlooks on life and the pursuit of dreams. DW tells about his beginnings, his hometown life, and of course his love of racing. The book is great, and provides a lot of insight into the man, as well as the world of NASCAR. A GREAT book, i rate it right up there with Junior Johnson's bio. If you are a racing fan, more importantly, a NASCAR fan this is required reading, if you just have a passing interest...read this, it may change you.

A Great Read For Any Racing Fan.......2004-02-18

Darrell Waltrip is known today as the "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity" guy on Fox Sports who opens every race with those famous three words. However, back in the 70's and 80's, he was an aggressive driver on the NASCAR circuit who was feared by drivers and hated by fans. Over time, he won over the hearts of many and is now one of the most recognizeable faces in the NASCAR family. This book gives the reader an inside look into his career and life which has been anything but boring. This is a wonderful and exciting book that brings the reader into the great races of old and shows the reader why "DW" is one of NASCAR's most colorful and likeable personalities. A great read for any racing fan.

While I did finish reading this book, I'm not sure why. I didn't find it very amusing.

For its length, one doesn't really learn very much about the used car business, the author, life in California, or much else.

Fun, Addictive Story About California Through Scottish Eyes.......2004-01-20

It's a tale of the author's travels from Scotland to the Silicon Valley. Originally, Donegan came to the Bay Area was to work at a friend's business, but after finding that opportunity to be less than desirable, he supported himself and his girlfriend in one of the most American of occupations, a used car salesman. What really makes the story unique is that this story of chasing the American dream is retold through the perspective of a Scot, and a pretty clever and witty one at that.

I actually have more in common with the author than most, as I too came to the Silicon Valley to start a sales career about a month after Donegan came. I came from the Midwestern United States, which isn't a whole lot like California either, so I could relate.

While I had a special pleasure of knowing the euphoric Silicon Valley circa 2000 and the various places Donegan refers too, everyone is going to have blast reading this book. The author begins to wrestle with his conscience, as he slowly becomes the sleazy salesman he once despised. The fact that he becomes more successful as he gets sleazier becomes troubling. But this is likely to be the most fun you've ever had watching a man struggle with an ethical dilemma.

It's the kind of book you have to renew after three weeks at the library---to go through again....Funny in kind of a non-neurotic, non Spaulding Gray style....If you've ever lived in California, it adds to the fun. This book was just a pleasure to read, to get myself out of myself...Informative about the used car buz....funny, realistic and enjoyable.....

I was here again, buying a copy of the book, looking at the reviews, agreeing with this one, and discovered it was mine.....
