Book Description
Current pressures to maximize the use of forages in ruminant diets have renewed interest in fast, inexpensive methods for the estimation of their nutritional value. As a result, a wide variety of biological and physiochemical procedures have recently been investigated for this purpose. This book is the single definitive reference volume on the current status of these procedures and their potentials and limitations, including discussions of physio-chemical approaches, the energy and protein values of forages and the importance of forage valuation.

OK for background info but needs better maps.......2005-12-15
I bought this book while preparing for my trip to NY and liked the Suggested NYC Itineraries section as well as how the subway stations, websites, hours, etc are listed. However, once in NY, I realized that what I really needed was a good subway map and detailed map useful when walking around. The book includes a map but I found it to be quite useless since not all streets are listed. (The map looks detailed enough to navigate yourself but it doesn't have enough detail of areas such as SoHo or Greenwich.) Even if the subway information changes frequently, I wish it had included a basic subway map so that I could navigate the system easier.
There are better choices.......2005-08-18
Bought this book along with Fodor's 05 New York City Guide and New York Eyewitness Travel Guide for our trip to New York in August. Overall this was the least informative book. The biggest problem is that the book mainly focuses on where to eat and where to stay, not what to see. If you want a book that details sights better, I would pick Fodor's 05 New York City Guide. I carried the book with me almost every day in New York, while the Frommer's guide was left in the hotel room to press flowers from the botanical garden.

The harrowing survival story of English explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and the ill-fated Endurance has intrigued people since the 1914 expedition--spurring astounding books such as Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage and The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition. As Shackleton and 27 sailors attempted to cross the frozen Antarctic continent from one side to the other, they were trapped in an ice pack, lost their ship to the icy depths, survived an Antarctic winter, escaped attacks from sea lions, and traversed 600 treacherous miles to the uninhabited Elephant Island. Leaving 22 men behind, Shackleton and five others sailed 800 miles across the southern Atlantic Ocean in a 20-foot open boat to tiny South George Island, where they hiked across unmapped mountains to a whaling station. In 1916, 19 months after the Endurance became icebound, Shackleton led a rescue party back to retrieve his men. Remarkably, every crew member survived.
Jennifer Armstrong, the award-winning author of Black-Eyed Susan and The Dreams of Mairhe Mehan, brings the unbelievable journey to life with delicious details: how a handsome young stowaway was discovered too late to cast him off; how the ship itself would become frost-white, looking like "another species of sparkling white iceberg as it nosed its way through the pack;" and how the ice-pack-dwelling Emperor penguins seemed to enjoy the banjo music of crew member Leonard Hussey. The true-to-life story is as thrilling as they come, and Armstrong's lively, crystal-clear writing style is just as compelling. More than 40 photographs of the expedition populate this inspiring nonfiction adventure story that young readers will devour from cover to cover. (Ages 10 to 14) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World vividly recreates one of the most extraordinary adventure stories in history.
In August 1914, Ernest Shackleton and 27 men sailed from England in an attempt to become the first team of explorers to cross the Antarctic continent from one side to the other. Five months later and still 100 miles from land, their ship, Endurance, became trapped. The expedition survived an Antarctic winter in the icebound ship, then, after Endurance sank, five months camped on the ice followed by a perilous boat journey through storms and icebergs to remote and unvisited Elephnat Island, 600 miles from Cape Horn. From there, their only hope was for someone to fetch help. In a dramatic climax to this amazing survival story, Shackleton and five others navigated 800 miles of the treacherous open ocean in a 20-foot boat and then hiked across the unmapped, glacier-strewn interior of South Georgia Island to a whaling station. In August 1916, 19 months after Endurance first became icebound, Shackleton led a rescue party back to Elephant Island for his men.
Jennifer Armstrong narrates these almost unbelievable events with vigor, an eye for detail, and an appreciation of the marvelous leadership of Ernest Shackleton, who brought home every one of his men alive. With them survived a remarkable archive of photographs of the expedition, more than forty of which are reproduced here.
Customer Reviews:
A gripping tale.......2007-07-03
If you ever think your job is hard, or you feel like complaining about the traffic or the weather or that your Internet connection is slow, just stop. Stop and consider the ordeal and misery suffered by the 28 men on Ernest Shackleton's 1914-16 Antartic expedition.
Nothing will seem so bad then.
The Shackleton expedition is probably the greatest survival story ever. After their ship became trapped in ice, the men were forced to spend a winter aboard in the cold and darkness of Antarctic winter. Then their ship was crushed, and they were forced to drag their belongings across the ice by foot. Then things got bad.
They tried to pull their lifeboats across the ice to open water, but found it impossible. Food supplies dwindled and they survived by eating penguins and seals. The ice floes split beneath their feet. They were constantly cold and wet. Then things got worse.
They finally reached the ocean and survived a torcherous six-day ride across raging seas, with little sleep or drinking water, reaching a barren island with their throats parched with thirst. One man had frostbite on his toes. Then, six of them took an even more impossible voyage, a 16-day sail to reach help on South Georgia Island. But even when they got there, they weren't done -- they still had to climb a mountain range.
The Shackleton story has been told many times. This version, by Jennifer Armstrong, is aimed at youth readers, but anyone would enjoy it. The story here is enhanced by nice use of pictures. If you like this, you can move on to the longer, more detailed, books on the expedition.
Awesome, kid-friendly account of the Shackleton expedition........2007-01-10
This is the book that first got me interested in the misadventures of Shackleton and his crew. And I like to think this is what could get kids interested in a better-than-fiction adventure.
The events of the disaster are tackled in rather a heroic light, which should appeal to children. Besides, Shackleton and his men were certainly heroes. The book covers all the basics in an easy-but-remarkably-written expository text. Yet it reads almost like a story in parts, with lots of room for factoids, and that should attract both types of kids--those looking for a good story and those looking for facts. It's a great balance, and allows for a surprisingly emotional view of the situation.
The format is wonderful, too-- who doesn't like to look at pictures? It's almost remisiscent of a magazine, which adds to the appeal.
Great information, a great survival adventures, and perfectly packaged.
Wonderful, wonderful job.

The years of disaster
The book shipwreck at the bottom of the world was a very interesting book the book had a good sense of the true story. When the book started off it showed that there was stuff like that, that actually happened. This book was a if not the best book i have read.
The book was very good and I highly recommend it for good readers
When you read it, it seems like it is very hard to follow but it is not hard once it gets going.
Highly recommended!.......2006-07-10
This book exposes the hardships and courage needed to endure two years in the Antarctic with none of the technological advances that we have available to us now. The author does an excellent job of introducing us to the captain and some of the crew. She draws us into their world as their adventure slowly changed into a heroic tale of survival. I used it with sixth graders and found lots of material to tie it into the California Language Arts Standards. Great book for adults and middle and upper school students.
Pictures make this story come alive!.......2006-02-25
This amazing story was made all the better for me with the pictures that were included in the book. I read parts of this book to sixth graders, and they loved seeing the pictures as I read the text. The straight forward story was great to read too. I've read other accounts of this adventure and thoroughly enjoyed this one the most.

Little wheels keep on turnin' with antique toy vehicles........1999-03-12
In the 1970's-80's Lillian Gottschalk, with her husband Bill, built a collection of boys' toys that would overflow any sandbox. From cast iron taxis to giant pressed steel Buddy L trucks, the Gottschalks assembled one of the country's best collections of classic 1920's-30's automotive pieces. The collection was sold several years ago for several million, but readers can enjoy detailed photos and information from the pre-scrap drive era. Bill Holland, a professional photographer, takes great care to offer these toys in variety of settings. A large, coffee table book that will inspire any gathering to reminisce about their youth. - Leila Dunbar, Writer Mobilia.com

One of the Best and Most Thorough Books On the Subject.......2004-05-17
I purchased this fine book in the late 1980s and it continues to be head and shoulders over much of what is out there. It is quite possibly one of the the finest books ever produced on the subject.
First of all, the photographs of the antique cars are not only stunningly clear and sharp, but the artistry in which they are photographed -- including the clever vignettes and backgrounds used to shoot them -- are wonderfully inventive and a delight for any collector to see. They are simply unsurpassed. The photos are frequently shot in such a way that virtually every detail and nuance of the subject toy is clearly seen.
Secondly, the depth and breadth of the range of toy cars and trucks, be they tin, cast, or steel is extraordinary in it's scope. I believe that this book encompasses all of the important manufacturers and their designs, and some obscure ones as well, including a few lines maunfactured in Europe.
Third, the book's organization brings order to the potpourri of cars, trucks, metals and manufacturers which were produced over the decades. It's logical, thoughtful and easy to navigate.
Finally, the book imparts a wealth of knowledge. It elucidates little known, esoteric facts and provides a good primer into not only each type of toy, and each raw material from which it was made, but also informs us of the history of the manufacturer, when it was made, and often why.
In summary, this book could be considered a cornerstone of any antique car toy collector's library. As mentioned earlier, the photograhy in this book is so outstanding and arresting, that I keep mine standing up in the back of my book case, serving as wonderful backdrop and compliment to my classic Dick Tracy Patrol Car (Squad #1) that sits in front of it.
Find this book wherever it may be. It will be well worth the effort. You will endlessly enjoy this book.

This is the best gardening book I've ever read, and I highly recommend it. Matter of fact, I always keep two copies in case I lend it and don't get it back!
The newspaper and magazine clippings are helpful and creative, as well as entertaining and endearing. You'll have plants growing inside and out, and best of all, no chemicals!!!

1001 Old Time Garden Tips
I enjoyed this book very much, and find that it is one of those gardening books that I keep going back to for new advice.
What is interesting about 1001 Old Time Garden Tips is that so much of the advice, the tips, so much is old stuff, good old advice that has often been forgotten. I do landscaping, design work, horticultural consulting, and am a garden writer myself ( Allergy-Free Gardening, and most recently, Safe Sex in the Garden ) and I love to have good, solid, informative, well-written gardening books on hand for quick reference.
The longer I garden ( and I've been at it for close to 5 decades now ) the more I appreciate an organic approach. 1001 Old Time Garden Tips: Timeless Bits of Wisdom on How to Grow Everything Organically, from the Good Old Days When Everyone Did, sure has the longest title I ever saw! But it is also a mighty good, easy to follow, highly useful book and if you garden, I'm almost certain you'd enjoy owning it. I know I sure like my copy. The editor for this great collection of useful tips and advice, Roger Yepsen, has done a terrific job.
Full of ideas not easily found in other resource books........1998-11-15
This book is a joy to pick up when you're bored or looking for gardening ideas or help. I especially enjoy the "Strange But True" sections. New and Long time gardeners will enjoy this publication.
A new gardening jewel!.......1998-09-22
What a jewel! This book is a well-organized, illustrated collection of OLD gardening tips, including everything from herbs to houseplants to lawns to controlling pests. Paragraph-long entries end with their original publication sources--which are almost as interesting as the advice. The suggestions are timeless. I find I "hear" my grandparents' wisdom about plants on every other page. This book will definitely hit my list of favorite books to give as a gift--but I'll always save a copy for myself.

REGGIE WAS A TRUE GENTLEMAN.......2006-06-25
THIS IS THE STORY OF REGGIE WHITE FORMER NFL GREAT. THIS IS A GOOD READ FOR EVERYONE, NOT JUST FOOTBALL FANS. REGGIE TELLS US OF HIS LIFE AND CAREER WITH THE EAGLES AND PACKERS, ALONG THE WAY HE HAS SOME GREAT STORIES ABOUT FORMER COACHES AND TEAMATES. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE IN THIS BOOK IS HOW TO LIVE A CHRISTIAN LIFE. REGGIE WAS A DEVOUT CHRISTIAN AND SPREAD THE WORD. HE NOT ONLY TALKED THE TALK BUT WALKED THE WALK. THE LESSONS AND MESSAGES IN THIS BOOK ARE WELL WORTH READING AND USING IN EVERYDAY LIFE. I WAS VERY SHOCKED TO LEARN OF REGGIE'S DEATH. HE WAS A GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR EVERYONE. I RECOMMEND THIS ANYONE AND EVERYONE TO READ. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH REGGIE WHITES IN THIS WORLD.
Great Book About Reggie White's Football Career and His Christian Witness!.......2006-06-08
"I've never seen any conflict between Christianity and football. I don't see football as a violent sport; I see it as aggressive. And I see Christianity as an aggressive faith." (pg. 189).
IN THE TRENCHES spends tons of time talking about what made Reggie White famous, FOOTBALL, and what he thinks is most important for him to do with his football success, use it to promote JESUS!
"...three words--IN THE TRENCHES--sum it all up for me. I live my life in the trenches. I do my work in the trenches. I serve my God in the trenches. I go to war against evil, poverty, racism, and injustice in the trenches." (pg. 22)
Reggie talks about how he grew up. He was the second son of a teenage mother, who seldom saw his father. He was always much larger than other kids his age, and they called him names like "Bigfoot" and "Land of the Giants." He got saved when he was 13, and he would point out what the Bible said to bad kids who were doing things like always telling lies.
He claims O.J. Simpson as his childhood inspiration and main reason that he wanted to play football, even though this book was written after the famous murders?
He toughened himself up for football, to prove wrong the folks who said he couldn't handle it because he's a Christian!
He talks about playing in the USFL and the NFL, for the Showboats, Eagles and Packers. This book was written before he won the Super Bowl with the Packers. He spends plenty of pages giving many details about many different games. Sometimes it gets a little too long for me, so if you are interested in hearing about his football career, then this is the book for you! "Sacks are fun, man. There's nothing like throwing a quarterback down for a big loss." (pg. 83). He also talks about being one of the first really big stars to go into Free Agency, which was not popular with the team owners of the time! "The owners who screamed the loudest about free agency were the owners of the notoriously tightwad teams--the Eagles, the Bengals, the Steelers." (pg. 127).
He details the times when God pulled off public miracles to heal him to play. He also discusses how God used his football fame to bring to the public eye the problem of church arsons in the South, by having Reggie's church get burned down, which brought national media attention, and plenty of extra love and support from Green Bay fans, and from across the nation.
There are many b/w photos in the middle of the book, so you get to see many of the family and friends discussed.
This book is better than Reggie White's later book, BROKEN PROMISES, BLINDED DREAMS, which is mostly about his thoughts concerning African-Americans in the USA. BROKEN PROMISES focuses mainly on what's wrong with the immoral US culture, these days, so you should read BROKEN PROMISES if you are interested in social activism and the African-American experience, from Reggie White's perspective.
He only briefly touches on the culture wars in this book, IN THE TRENCHES, "Nobody's preaching abstinence today because nobody's figured out how to get rich off of other people's abstinence--but there's plenty of money to be made from other people's sexual activity...[...]..sexually transmitted diseases...aborting unwanted babies...Much of the money spent on various aspects of people's sexual behavior is TAX money--money you and I shell out to the government, money that is spent without our say-so!" (pg. 217).
At the end of the book he give tips on how to be a good role model.
I am a Reggie White fan, because I like what he did with his football fame, using it to promote Christianity throughout his entire career, and way before and after his pro football days, as well!
I think this is the best Reggie White book that I have read, though I can also recommend BROKEN PROMISES for anybody who is intrigued by the activist aspect of Reggie White's life.
There is also a pretty decent book of photos called REGGIE WHITE: A CELEBRATION OF LIFE, 1961-2004. This is slim on text, but has many interesting photos of his pro football years.
"When I face the final judgment, God isn't going to ask me how many Pro Bowls I played in or ask me to recite my stats. He's going to ask me if I knew Jesus, and if I helped to bind up the wounds of people." (pg. 195, IN THE TRENCHES).
In The Trenches by Reggie White.......2000-12-18
I found this book very interesting I learned a lot about Reggie White. I wish that he was still with the Green Bay Packers. I am a huge Green Bay Packer fan. This book had a lot of interesting stuff in it. For example I never knew that one of his favorite players growing up was O.J. Simpson. Reggie said in the book that O.J. Simpson was like a moving target for defensive linemen; he said, that was one of the reasons that he wanted to play defensive end. I also learned that he really liked his coach Buddy Ryan when he played with the Philadelphia Eagles ,and when Buddy Ryan got fired Reggie couldn't figure out why he got fired; he said Buddy Ryan was a good coach. Reggie also talked about his church getting burned. He also talked about his friend and teammate Jerome Brown who was killed a car accident and he thought he was a really great person and he said he misses him. I learned a lot from reading this book. This book is one of my favorite books that I read. I would recommend this book to every Green Bay Packer fan.
Exciting, well written book; could use some more chapters.......1999-10-29
This was a great book because it shared with me how profesesional athletes deal with the same things that us normal, every day Joe-Schmoes have to deal with. It was interesting how he dealed with his church getting burned down and how he was frustrated with the authorities, just as I am.
Great Book.......1999-05-27

The Truth About Reggie's Legacy.......2006-08-15
This book was an absolute joy to read. It really makes you think about hoe to better yourself. It also of course mentions the game of football and the truth about how football players actually want to use their wealth and fame to help the less fortunate. A must read in my book!!!!
Reggie White In the Trenches.......2002-10-16
Reggie White is a football player who shows his faith in God. In this book it teaches about God. And about the amazing life of Reggie White. I enjoyed reading it because I like football and it was exciting and fun.
Wasn't there supposed to be some football involved?.......2001-04-16
Hmmm... ever read one of those books that you THOUGHT was going to be about football, and instead it turned out to be a maudlin diatribe of religious proselytization? Oh, then you read this book ,too, huh?
This book was mostly a waste of time. If you like football, you'll be disapointed by the lack of the sport included in it's pages. If you like the Eagles, you'll be upset at the way Reggie verbally trashes them in this book.
I don't recommend it for anyone with a serious love of the game. If you're a Bible-thumping religion nut, then this book is right up your alley.
