Customer Reviews:
OK book as an add-on to another Chicago guide.......2007-02-15
This book seems very comprehensive. I love Frommer's guides and the book definitely is par for the course. I don't, however, think that it is a "comprehensive" guide for a family trip to Chicago. It leaves out lots of things that are in the REGULAR Chicago guide. It works better as an addendum to that guide than a sole travel guide. Also, it seems to be sugesting that the REALLY appropriate restaurants for kids are chains! That kind of defeats the purpose of the life experience of travel in my book. We don't eat that kind of stuff at home and we certainly aren't looking for it when we travel!
Frommer's Chicago with Kids.......2006-08-25
I am a Frommer's fan! If you already have the recent Frommer's Chicago, then you may find much of the information in this book a tad redundant.
The book tackles topics pertinent to families: prices, facilities, times when families will feel most welcome, etc...
I am very happy with my purchase and will pursue other Frommer's products in the future.
Invaluable resource for visiting Chicago with kids!.......2005-08-28
I bought this book to read before a recent family trip to Chicago. It was an invaluable resource! I brought it with me on our trip to Chicago and referred to it during the trip.
I found the information on attractions and museums, with hours and admission fees listed to be most helpful. The information on public transportation (which bus routes go to various attractions) and the free trolley service were very useful, as were the listings of various bus/boat tours, especially considering that the book listed phone numbers for the tour services. We planned to go on a Wendella boat tour, but I wasn't sure how late the tours were running, so I pulled out my Frommer's Chicago with Kids book, and was able to look up the number for Wendella to give them a call.
The book also has sections on various neighborhoods around the city, which were very interesting (although I didn't have time to visit any). The only concern I had with the book is that the section on the "Old Town" neighborhood says in regards to safety that the large, Cabrini-Green public housing project has fallen to the wrecking ball. That is inaccurate - the project only has about 4,700 people still living in it (down from 25,000 before demolition plans were announced), but all of the buildings are still standing. The new development in the area has occurred around the projects, not directly on the site. Just something worth noting. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book!
A Chicago "Must Have".......2003-09-04
Even if you've resided in or visited Chicago frequently, this guide includes activities and insight which are invaluable when traveling with children. From the best places to eat and stay to the most "kid friendly" museums and gallaries, this book has it all. A definite good buy if you want to plan the most cost effective and enjoyable family trip to Chicago.
This book pointed me in the right direction.......2003-08-15
With colorful maps and reviews of the best hotels, restaurants, and activities for the family, this guide was the only book I needed to plan the perfect trip.

Holocaust History for Middle Schoolers.......2000-04-25
This books is a good historical treatment for middle school students. The first half of the book tells about Hitler and the German extermination of the Jews and the second half tell the Jews' side of the story. Black and white pictures are plentiful with one every few pages. Kids will understand how prevalent anti-Semitism was when they see the picture of a game board for "Jews Get Out," a board game sold in Germany in 1939 and 1940. The one thing I did not like was on a map which shows the destruction of the Jews in Europe by country (showing the number of Jews killed over the prewar Jewish population), you cannot read the numbers for Poland because they are stuck in a crack. Also the map of Europe under the German Rule is hard to read because of its black and white color scheme. But all in all, the book is an easy to read and informative history of this time.

Chris Armold has done it again!.......2001-04-25
"Painted Steel: Steel Pots Volume II" has joined "Steel Pots" as an essential reference in every helmet and militaria collectors library. "Painted Steel" provides, to date, the most comprehensive review of U.S. helmet markings. This book will allow you in determine if that M1917 2nd Division helmet, with a painted insignia, is from the Machine Gun Company, 5th Marines, or another unit in the Division. Additionally, Chris, with the assistance of Larry Munnikhuysen, includes a chapter on a totally neglected subject-- a history of U.S. tanker and combat vehicle crewman helmets. To complete this fine work, Chris Armold includes a useful chapter of fakes, reproductions, and misrepresentations and closes with an update for "Steel Pots." So if your considering purchasing a pricey "WWII" M1C Airborne Helmet you need this book!

A Must Read.......2003-03-12
Without a doubt one of the BEST books I've read on birds! Informative and fun to read. Helps to understand the way birds think. Truly sound advice on how to remedy behavioral problems and/or heading them off before they start. Great for all around advice including dietary needs, cage placement as it relates to behavior, when to consult an avian veterinarian (including how to find an avian veterinarian), flock behavior, etc. A must read for all bird owners~!! A BIG two thumbs up~!!
Book Description
George Ohr (1857 - 1918) was considered the most revolutionary art potter of his time and this exquisitely designed book contains over 300 works by Ohr, and the informative text combined with the number of photographs will make this the definitive essential reference on this extraordin- ary artist.
Customer Reviews:
MISSING EARLY UTILITARIAN POTTERY.......2007-09-10
The book is beautiful and the photos are superb, but I was somehow led to believe I'd find photos of early utilitarian pottery in this book and I did not. I will use the book. It does enhance my knowledge of George Ohr and his work, but I wanted to see the really old pieces from his work with his mentors and beyond.
IF YOU LIKE POTTERY.......2007-06-21
If you like pottery and George Ohr this is an outstanding book. Amazing photo quality of some of George's coolest work..He was truly one of the worlds best at what he did..This has become one of our favorites, and we found it for less money on AMAZON.COM!!! Thanks,TESSRS
the imaginative and singular art pottery of George Ohr.......2006-09-11
Ohr does break the mold when it comes to art pottery. Whereas other potters, no matter how innovative or imaginative they are, stay within certain classic forms for vases, bowls, goblets, etc., Ohr often departs radically from the forms. His art pottery is perhaps best considered as free-form sculpture inspired by, but not made according to, traditional pottery. Thus, a "pot" has "elaborate configuration: sharp bends, angles, blades, swirls, and quasi-cylinders [making for] complexity from every angle." Another "pot" has "crinkling result[ing] in dramatically deep three-dimensional spaces...[which] radiate highlights that contrast with the dark-brown glaze...[giving] this piece...a brooding, enigmatic presence." The foregoing quotes are from captions of two of the color photographs of individual pieces of Ohr's pottery on nearly every page. The work is a tour through Ohr's artistic career from "The Early Years" to "A Final Phase" noting and illustrating phases of development and points of his individuality. With their colors and polymorphous, though mostly rounded, shapes, Ohr's pottery/sculpture has a deep earthiness, as if plucked whole from the ground's depths, though they patently demonstrate a clear, singular vision and matching consummate skill.
AN ARTIST AHEAD OF HIS TIME.......2006-08-09
"Geo E Ohr has challenged any potter on earth! `You' Prove the Contrary!" These are the words painted by George Ohr on a sign at the 1895 Atlanta Cotton States and International Exposition.
He did more than challenge fellow artists, he set a standard for them by digging his own clay, shaping his own pots, firing his own kiln, and creating forms that were unlike the currently popular shapes. In fact, his shapes were so outre at the time that he was called "The Mad Potter of Biloxi." As the world now knows he was prescient.
The words that he painted in 1895 followed the total destruction of his studio and some 10,000 pieces by fire, plus a devastating hurricane that hit the Mississippi coast prior to that. Obviously, he was a resilient and determined individual. Today, in the wake of Katrina, the Ohr O'Keefe Museum in Biloxi is being rebuilt. If he were still living Ohr would have it no other way.
Married and the father of ten children, he sold most of his works at expositions and fairs. He received only a modicum of artistic appreciation during his lifetime, although he was presented with the Silver Medal at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. It was not until the 1960s that a New Jersey antique dealer, Jim Carpenter, came to Biloxi and saw Ohr's works now housed in an auto repair shop. Carpenter eventually bought nearly 7000 pots and introduced Ohr to art aficionados in New York City. The potter's stature as an extraordinary artist has continued to grow.
Robert Ellison became an admirer of Ohr's and now owns some 370 pieces. His creation of this beautiful volume is a gift to all. With 192 color illustrations illuminated by scholarship George Ohr, Art Potter, is both a tribute to the artist and an outstanding reference for his work.

Essential to read before you see these memorials.......2000-04-13
Fresh and original, "Inscriptions of a Nation" fills a hole in history and travel books. This slim volume contains the inscriptions on Washington, D.C.'s major monuments and memorials. The author, Clint Ensign, prefaces each featured memorial with a brief synopsis of the monument and why it or the person it commemorates is significant to our history. However, the book's main purpose is to present the inscriptions on these memorials.
By truly reading and understanding these passages, the purposes of the memorials become even clearer. Usually, a tourist doesn't have time to appreciate the wisdom and strength of Abraham Lincoln's words when confronted by his massive memorial, but careful study of the quotations leads to understanding that a monument is more than a massive statue, but rather a tribute to an idea.
Ensign admits this is not a comprehensive work, but the prominent monuments as of 1994 are featured here. This book sorely needs to be updated and put back in print.

Book Description
The organization of letters on a blank sheet -- or screen -- is the most basic challenge facing anyone who practices design. What type of font to use? How big? How should those letters, words, and paragraphs be aligned, spaced, ordered, shaped, and otherwise manipulated? In this groundbreaking new primer, leading design educator and historian Ellen Lupton provides clear and concise guidance for anyone learning or brushing up on their typographic skills.
Thinking with Type is divided into three sections: letter, text, and grid. Each section begins with an easy-to-grasp essay that reviews historical, technological, and theoretical concepts, and is then followed by a set of practical exercises that bring the material covered to life. Sections conclude with examples of work by leading practitioners that demonstrate creative possibilities (along with some classic no-no's to avoid).
Customer Reviews:
Glossy, colorful, devoid of substance.......2007-10-09
Ellen Lupton's "Thinking with Type" is a strange book that exists because of itself. It uses different fonts and colors and layout to tell you about different fonts and colors and layout. Even the example text is about itself, and not Lorem Ipsum or some such (for example, "This is Helvetica 9 point" written in Helvetica 9 point).
This is about as meta as you can get, a work of reflexive modern art if you will. Think Godel, Lupton, Bach? But it advertises itself as A Critical Guide for Designers, Writers and Editors, which it surely, emphatically, is not. I learned more from the first few pages of Parker's Looking Good in Print -- a fine book every one of whose commandments Lupton manages to violate -- than from this opus of navel-gazing.
A few concrete things wrong with it: well, the obvious one is that since every design element in this book exists to show itself, the book as a whole is extremely difficult to read. This is exacerbated by bad Index and Table of Contents... the only reason they exist is because they should (sum ergo sum). The fancy rendering of chapters (of which there are three, yes three; moreover they have monosyllabic titles) and sections add to this weird where-am-I-in-the-text effect.
At a graphic design contest level, this might be interesting, but at a "critical guide" level, it is criminal -- worse than type crime. This book suffers from the unpardonable crime of overdesign at any macroscopic level you'd care to think about. Moreover, it simply lacks substance. If a tenth of the time spent typesetting this book had been allocated to actual content, it could have turned out all right. As such, it is full of gloss and color, signifying nothing.
useless.......2007-09-08
I wouldn't recommend this book to anybody. just a fiw bits of information from every area, but nothing specific or useful.
Great value.......2007-09-05
If you're loooking for a good foundational knowledge of type, this is one of the best books for the money you'll find.
don't be deceived by the title.......2007-09-04
not quite helpful with thinking with type as the title suggests. more of a brief historical overview of type and such. does not really help you think critically about type. there are a few other books i would definitely if you're wanting for something deeper about type after reading this book. overall, for the price, it's a decent book to own. i do wish the book talked more about the grid system though.
A disorderly book, some good advice, much confusion.......2007-08-25
This book does not accomplish what it sets out to be, according to the subtitle, "A critical guide for designers, writers, editors & students". It has some interesting examples of unusual designs and has some value for designers of, for example, brochures or advertisements. But the book has limited value for the remaining targeted audience, as far too much of the book is devoted to oddities and strange designs that a writer, editor or student should NEVER even think of using.
The majority of the examples of text settings in the book are unreadable for more than a few lines. No writer who actually wants his or her work to be read should ever want to have the text set in one of these designs.
There are some useful guides on matters such as leading and tracking, but these are lost in the overall jumble. The book merits two stars only because of designers might find it useful. All others should avoid the book.
Book Description
Although grid systems are the foundation for almost all typographic design, they are often associated with rigid, formulaic solutions. However, the belief that all great design is nonetheless based on grid systems (even if only subverted ones) suggests that few designers truly understand the complexities and potential riches of grid composition.
In her best-selling Geometry of Design, Elam shows how proportion, symmetry, and other geometrical systems underlie many of the visual relationships that make for good design. Now, Elam brings the same keen eye and clear explanations to bear on the most prevalent, and maybe least understood, system of visual organization: the grid.
Filled with extensive research and more than 100 informative examples from the Bauhaus to Nike ads, Grid Systems provides a rich, easy-to-understand overview and demonstrates a step-by-step approach to typographic composition. It suggests design strategies that transcend simple function and reductionist recipes to allow grids to become a means of truly dynamic communication. Any designer, educator, or student will benefit greatly from this elegant slim book, chock-a-block full of colorful examples, helpful vellum overlays, and Elam's insightful analysis.
Customer Reviews:
didn't help.......2007-09-22
If you want an excellent book dealing with the grid - and if you want to actually learn something - get Tim Samara's Making and Breaking the Grid. I was very unhappy with this purchase.
Excelente libro.......2007-07-26
Esto es un gran aporte al conocimiento y una herramienta imprescindible en el diseño gráfico, claramente escrito, excelentes y variados ejemplos, increíbles hojas guías y una gran redacción. Excelente compra!
Great examples in grid design.......2007-05-14
This book is filled with great examples of grid use in real-life design, with vellum overlays outlining the grid on the actual layout. Between the examples--and what makes up the bulk of the book--is the "exercises" the author works through on three different types of grid: horizontal, horizontal-vertical, and diagonal. Her examples are on a 3x3 square grid, with elements that perfectly fit within one, two, or three squares. Because of this basic instruction, some of the concepts are a little difficult to translate to your own design.
Overall, though, I still give the book 4 stars; the concepts Elam presents in the book are very solid and it's relatively easy to understand.
Scrapbook good for scrap.......2006-11-29
Kimberly Elam must be famous enough that a publisher will take her notebooks or scrapbooks and have them typeset without much editing and without giving any real thought to trifling details such as the reader.
This book is just a collection of notes that may make sense to the person who wrote them, but are not very illuminating to someone looking for a methodical approach to the subject -- unless, of course, that someone is telepathic and can read the author's mind.
Save your money.
offers the necessary design skills and sharp eyes to become a successful designer !!.......2006-08-11
I wanted to take a brief moment to express the huge impact that the "System Grids" made in my design skill development.
What to say about the Book? It's truly an experience! It is a very helpful book for designers, educators and students. Grid Systems is a unique design book. It is like a knowledgeable friend walking with you through the principles of typographical design; pointing out the differences between a good design and a bad one ; leading you to understand the importance of hierarchy in design; figuring out type, space, image, and size relationships. This is done step by step, to insure a thorough understanding of these principles from basic to advanced, ultimately making for good design and a perceptive and successful designer.
In this book, Kim Elam explains her ideas on how to produce a good quality design using the grid system principles. With her many years of experience as an educator, the book offers us a system to develop the necessary design skills and sharp eyes to become a successful designer and to develop and produce exceptional work.
It's a wonderful book, in both quality and quantity! I've known about it since my undergraduate study, and I am so happy to see my colleagues using it now in the class room.

Book Description

If you like a swiss typography this is a book for you.
It only use lower case in this book. Helmud schmid was a student of Emil Ruder and if you had a Emil Ruder book this has a similar feeling. The type is very small with three grid coloums.
I recomended to my friends and they ordered the book after I showed the book.

I work for a major supplier of prepress hard- and software. It is often difficult to find accurate extensive backgroud information on essential technologies like PostScript or PDF and this book fills this void perfectly. It is a goldmine if you want to look beyond the simple "select this, click that" type of manuals and take an detailed look at the way PostScript, drivers, printercommunication,... work.

Mandatory reading for leaders, including public officials!.......2002-01-06
Thanks to Steyn we get a closer look at one of the most fascinating persons in modern history. Nelson Mandela demonstrates most convincingly that integrity and respect for fellow human beings of all levels is not a sign of weakness but rather the ultimate demonstration of greatness. This book ought to be mandatory reading for every person in a leading position, be it in the political or any other field. Thus, let us hope that it becomes more readily available outside of South Africa!
One Step Behind Mandela.......2001-04-12
An excellent book! This book was very well written and contained in depth information about executive and personal protection that few people have the intimate knowledge to find out about. I was especially drawn to the special relationship that formed between Mr. Steyn & his protectee, President Nelson Mandela. This book also contained some very humerous passages, such as the incident where the driver for Mr. Mandala's principal car accidently locked the keys in the car, with the president's helicopter inbound a due to land in a few minutes! I would recommend this book to any protection specialist in the field and others alike.
