Book Description
This is a new edition in the Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology series. The vast majority of cells in the nervous system are glial cells. During development, these cells provide growth factors that stimulate the proliferation, migration and survival of neurones and their precursors, and promote and guide axonal growth. In the mature nervous system, glial cells provide insulating myelin sheathe around axons and provide metabolic and structural support for neurones. Glial cells also have a major influence on the local response to injury of the central nerve tract and the peripheral nervous system, either promoting, or inhibiting, axonal regrowth and recovery of lost function. This book provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of research into the development, function and malfunction of glial cells. It offers a compelling insight into how basic research throws light onto diseases and disorders and points the way towards treatments. Teams of internationally renowned experts, all active in research, have contributed chapters.

Customer Reviews:
Traveler's tool kit.......2007-09-26
Traveler's Tool Kit, 3rd (Purchased on 08/26/2007)
This is essential for anyone who travels.
Very Good Traveler's Tool Kit but needs updating........2007-07-28
This is a well-written resource for the traveler. Most of the advice and information is interesting and very-useful as well as time-tested. Fro example, the description of shopping tactics and how store keepers will price their goods according to the perceived affluence of the traveler was interesting and practical. Watching a well-known traveler on the Travel Channel interact with a store merchant in a South American country, I was amazed to see such an experienced traveler fall for the merchant tactics described in this book.
But some sections need updating. I would recommend this book for a general back ground of traveling but would also recommend purchasing a newer book for current data.
Traveler's Tool Kit: How to Travel Absolutely Anywhere.......2007-07-17
Traveler's Tool Kit is a general all purpose guide to traveling abroad. This book is divided into four parts: Planning your Trip, Getting Ready, On the Road, and The Finish Line. Within these four sections, however, are twenty-four chapters. These chapters include all the usual topics such as How to Choose Where to Go; Money; Lodging; Eating and Drinking; Language; and Transportation. Furthermore, several unique chapters are explored in this book with titles such as Travel Gear; Keeping Healthy; Safety and Security; Etiquette; and How to Stay in Touch with Home Base.
Each of these chapters contains a variety of hints, tips, and entertaining but educational stories pertaining to each particular topic. Though many of the hints and tips are commonly quoted sage advice, many of the ideas provided in this book are novel, obviously hard won information collected through extensive travel abroad by the author. In this way, no matter how little or how much travel experience the reader has, he or she will find ample helpful tips and hints.
Traveler's Tool Kit focuses on international travel rather than domestic travel. Furthermore, the author attempts to illustrate how to be a traveler rather than a tourist. A traveler, as opposed to a tourist, is a person who travels through a country, city, or town trying to soak up the atmosphere and culture of the particular inhabitants. Basically, the traveler attempts to learn from and experience the real life of people from other cultures. A traveler, unlike a tourist, stays away from well-worn tracks, tourist tours, museums, and souvenir shops. Instead, he or she takes the road traveled by the villagers, eats at the restaurants they eat at, and bargains like a professional at the local market. Furthermore, the traveler is ever weary of the pick pocket and the scam artist. Thus, Traveler's Tool Kit contains a plethora of information for the want to be international traveler.
traveler's tool kit.......2007-07-15
Actually I haven't looked at the book. Only the reviews. It sounds fabulous. We are going to Europe(May/2008) with teen. Have been to Europe many times. I would love to purchase this book, but it looks as if the most recent ed is 3rd, which is 2000 copyright. Will there be a newer edition soon?
Thanks,
Larry Cummings
Outstanding Travel Resource ... priceless.......2007-01-12
I have a lot of armchair travel books but this is the most comprehensive resource for anyone considering heading out to the four corners. Rob Sangster covers everything you need to consider and provided a wealth of tip from life-saving to money-saving. I also enjoyed his honesty and the helpful and colorful stories he uses to make his points stick.
Something for everyone ... the quintessential traveler's resource!

The Kontakt software has limited information available. While this book is very comprehensive, the best option to learn Kontakt is from the newly released tutorial DVD. It is awesome.

This sampler presents assessment tasks that are appropriate for use with students from age 4 through age 8. The book provides teachers of primary grades mathematics with examples of assessment tasks that reflect the various ways assessments can be used prior to, during, and following mathematics instruction. Teachers can then consider the potential of these tasks to uncover the mathematical understandings of their students for the purpose of planning further instruction. Each task can be altered by changing the context, breaking the task into subparts, limiting the scope or complexity of the task, or extending the task to provide more challenge or enhance the depth of understanding being assessed.

Customer Reviews:
I love the book -- it has answered many questions for me........1998-11-04
Frankly, I've never thought much about astrology. It's never been a hobby of mine or of much interest. However, when I apply the information this author provides about my Black Lab, it all makes so much sense. Though Alex (my dog) is a purebred, I didn't know her birthday (or, her sun sign). By following the author's recommendations, I've been able to determine Alex is a Pisces. Now, we have a new birthday to celebrate in our household. This is a fun book! I would recommend it to any dog lover. And, I think Ms. Barnwall has made people think about what they have to offer dogs as companions, rather than what dogs have to offer humans as servants. Very interesting!
It's a 'Keeper'! And it's THE gift for dog-lovers!.......1998-10-18
Finally, I can set aside all of my concerns about feeling biased about the 'special' characteristics of our 4-legged companion. It's in print; in the breed; in the stars!! I can now speak with more certainty and direct the skeptics to this delightful, insightful book.
This is my new bible in selecting dogs from now on!.......1998-10-06
Just read an advance copy of Cosmic Canines and it was marvelous! It is amazing, that after so many years raising and training dogs, that something has come out that makes sense of so many questions on dog behavior that I have had over the years. It isn't even in print yet and I am waiting to see what is next from Ms. Barnewall.
"Cosmic Canines" has solved at least a half dozen my Christmas shopping problems!

Anyone can wander around a flea market and buy a few quaint objects guaranteed to mystify her parents and appall her spouse. But it's an art to know the market, find what you're after, recognize the difference between valuable and worthless junk, collect the classics and dabble in trends, preserve what you have and restore what you buy. Sheila Zubrod and David Stern explore not only the flea market philosophy but also selling for profit, Web sites of value, flea market meccas throughout America and the world, and the primo cocktail shakers, coleslaw boards, and club chairs that constitute a true find.
Book Description
For pop culture junkies and there are many, flea markets are mirrors of the American mind as much as shopping venues. To them, owning a slice of our history is as important as finding that perfect piece to adorn the living room; adding to a collection; or just to getting a good bargain.
In this increasingly cookie-cutter, IKEA world, flea markets have endured, grown and recently shown an upscale trend. In Flea, Zubrod and Stern help make the flea market experience and process easy and enjoyable. They describe places to go, what to look for, how to tell what's "a good thing" and what's not and how to incorporate a find into an original home aesthetic. They also introduce readers to more than 50 classics items from the recent past that serve as the backbone of a new trend in art: from club chairs to cocktail shakers, Bauer pottery to Ring-Ding glass, fly-fishing gear to barbed wire. They also list the major flea market meccas in America, the world and on the World Wide Web; offer strategies for hunting; and show how dozens of today's top designers have woven their flea finds into their lives.

A fun book........1999-08-13
I work with the author's sister, and found out about the book through her
Book Description
With more than 800 Clematis species and cultivated varieties from which to choose, gardeners and growers have been inundated with options. Even more frustrating for some has been the absence of a single comprehensive reference with which to identify the numerous cultivars. This new volume, written by distinguished clematis experts and backed by the authority of the British Clematis Society, is the first picture encyclopedia on the genus to encompass the garden-worthy species and hybrids.
This long-awaited book is separated into two sections: the first is devoted to the care and cultivation of clematis, while the second provides an A — Z directory of more than 550 plants, from the acclaimed large-flowered forms to the less-familiar shrubby, subshrubby, and herbaceous forms that are beginning to be available. Using everyday language, the authors provide plant descriptions that include information on synonyms, origin, plant habit and height, flowers, pruning group, flowering period, cultural requirements, recommended uses in the garden, and hardiness zones. The text is accompanied by more than 650 magnificent color photos, making this encyclopedia an indispensable reference and guide.
Customer Reviews:
Encyclopedia is the Right Word.......2006-06-25
The word "encyclopedia" is sometimes overused, but not in the case of this book by Mary K. Toomey. The reader will enjoy learning about the huge number of clematis varieties with information on each one. The author even includes the different names that some varieties have in the market. This volume is a must for the serious gardener and especially for the clematis enthusiast. I highly recommend it.
If you can only own one.......2005-04-08
I own every book ever written about clematis. Unfortunately, this book was written by a Brit. That's the only negative for a North American grower. If you can own only one book on clematis this is the one. The author is very generous with her information. At least read this one cover to cover before buying anything else.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
Written by a physicist with professional dance training, Physics and the Art of Dance explains how dancers can achieve better, safer performances through an understanding of physics in motion. Using simple, non-technical terms, Kenneth Laws combines his knowledge of both physics and dance to describe how the laws of gravity, momentum, and energy affect dancing bodies. The book explores the natural laws that govern the subtleties of balance, the techniques of leaps and pirouettes, and the impressive lifts and turns executed by ballet partners. Finally, Laws offers insight into two current discussions in the dance world--the effect of body size on ballet technique, and the relationship between science and the art of dance. Beautiful, original stop-action photographs by Martha Swope, along with clear diagrams, illustrate the concepts described in the text. Plus, an intriguing "puzzler" at the beginning of each chapter provides an engaging entree into the topics presented. For those who want a more advanced understanding of the physics, extensive appendices are provided. This new book combines the best features of Laws's widely acclaimed The Physics of Dance and Physics, Dance, and the Pas de Deux by Laws and Cynthia Harvey. Its expert application of the basic principles of physics to the art of dance will be an invaluable resource for dancers and dance instructors and will open a new level of appreciation for lovers of the form. It will also appeal to physicists who seek to include the arts in their scientific pursuits.

Sara Michelle .......2006-05-30
I am a teenaged ballet student. I LOVED THIS BOOK. It helped me in my study of ballet in so many ways: understanding, balancing, executing movements, creating the illusions, improving my technique, and on and on. I love how the book is written, because it is easy to understand even if you are not a Physicist (but it also has Scientific material and some pages with the math and physics illustrated in equations, etc., as well). The chapters engage you with a question or puzzle that you have to solve. This makes you want to hurry up to get to the end of each chapter to see if your guesses were correct. You will learn how to create the illusion of floating in your grand jetes. You will learn how dancers suspend their movement that receives a 'gasp' from the audience that happens whenever something is held beyond what seems possible or expected. It is a book I needed in order to get beyond my limits as a dancer.
As Much Science As The Dancer Ever Should Need........2005-11-21
The question of how a knowledge of the science behind the movement of the human body helps students of dance learn to dance better is always discussed. Like the author, I too am both a physicist and a ballet dancer. I have found that the most important thing to learn in ballet is the imagery that works for you, and sometimes science can actually get in the way. Take walking for example: if we had to analyze ever movement in walking we would never be able to move. I should also point out that science still does not thoroughly understand walking, let alone dancing! Still, it is helpful in some places to understand, at least a little, what is happening in a movement or static pose. This book does a surprisingly fine job of covering most of the pertinent topics and some topics you would not have thought of asking about. I liked the fact that the author does not over simplify some topics, which is often done in elementary explanations. Science usually tries to abstract and simplify in order to explain phenomena, but this can lead to problems. Take, for example, the case of static balance on a point. If you approximate the human body as a rigid body, it is impossible to explain stable equilibrium on a point. Rigid bodies can only achieve unstable equilibrium over a point. But human beings are not rigid! In ballet, we can achieve stable balance over a point for an indefinite period of time(it is very difficult and rarely seen in performance but often in ballet class). This book actually mentions this and explains how it is done. It even includes a discussion of how much a cushioned floor will reduce shock to the dancer's joints. Many illustrations and photos are also included. This is the best book available on this subject, and for those who want to explore this topic further, this is the best place to start.
