Better options available.......2007-09-12

I found this book remarkably unhelpful. It was often maddeningly difficult to figure out which map went with which walk, and the walks were not described very clearly. Once I got to Scotland, there was a wealth of great walking books available everywhere, including the wonderful Cicerone guides, and the Pathfinder series published by the Ordinance Survey company, maker of the great topo maps in the UK. I ended up leaving my Lonely Planet guide in a cafe (on purpose), and using my newly purchased local guidebooks instead. The Cicerone and Pathfinder books are available on Amazon, and I highly recommend you skip the Lonely Planet and use these other books.

Excellent Resource for Planning Your Walk in Scotland.......2006-05-08

"Walking in Scotland" is like many Lonely Planet guides: packed with useful information in a compact form. Scotland is a superb environment for walking, with a surprising amount of beautiful, even wild areas which offer a huge variety of potential hikes, from easy day hikes to multi-day treks.

"Walking in Scotland" starts with an introduction to Scotland itself, with short descriptions of climate, terrain, and history. This guide includes a run-down on the practicalities of travelling to and around Scotland.

The bulk of the guide covers Scotland by region, with short sections for urban walking in Glasgow and Edinbugh, and much longer sections on the Highlands and Northwest Scotland. The longer routes such as the West Highland Way and the more popular areas such as Glen Coe and the Cairngorms are included. The walking sections include descriptions and diagrams of the more interesting routes, along with tips on local history, transportation, and accomodation. The guide is sprinkled with a few well-chosen photographs that provide a sense of scale for the terrain in Scotland.

This guide provides more than sufficient information for a traveler to plan a walking vacation in Scotland. Walkers are advised to follow the advice of the guide and pick up more detailed maps once in Scotland. Ordnance Survey and other brands are readily available in Information Centers and Sporting Goods stores in Scotland. Weather conditions are highly variable in Scotland and the lack of a detailed map may leave the walker literally stranded in the fog in some areas.

The downside of the compact size of this guide is that some of the maps and diagrams are so small as to be a challenge to read in anything but good light.

This guide is highly recommended to those contemplating a walking vacation in Scotland.

Compact encyclopaedia for independent walkers.......2002-04-02

For independent walkers planning a trip to Scotland, this book is a portable encyclopaedia. It covers a huge range, from easy walks to exposed ridge-walks and mountain ascents, from a short half-day hike to the Southern Upland Way (two weeks).

As you would expect from Lonely Planet, the authors are strong on environmental issues and thorough on practical information. In 408 pages of densely-packed text they cover the whole of Scotland; the secret of easy access is to use their handy 4-page table of walks organised by region. There is a useful index and glossary, and each walk is supported by a small-scale contour map.

It seems churlish to criticise such a worthy volume for offering too much, but do walkers really need so much detailed data? Price and contact information obsolesce very quickly, as LP clearly knows, and such crowded pages are hard to read in poor light or on a train. You need two strong hands to hold the book open, and even so the gutter is so narrow that you lose the ends of lines of text. As a one-stop resource for walking in Scotland, however, this book is superb value.

I enjoyed reading this book. Some of the stories bring tears to your eyes, and some make you laugh. But they all make you want to run outside and throw your arms around your equine friend. Read it for yourself and then pass it on to a horse buddy, which is what I did.

I am glad someone had finally put together a collection of true horse stories. The stories in this book are not all amazing, but most are only subtly enchanting. They will warm your heart, sometimes bring you to tears. There are, of course, a few astounding tales told in this book. To state an example: the boy who had never spoken before until he saw a pony and said 'Oh! pony!'

Some stories have been contributed by popular equestrian personalities and some others have been written about famous equines. You will find stories of courage, kindness, survival, friendship, and success. I am sure it was a great effort from Kimberly Gatto to put together a book like this. The horse world needed this generous contribution as it helps soften the hearts of those who deal with horses. Truly an inspiration.

Beautiful Bells.......2000-02-27

This is a beautifully produced book with an unrivalled series of 620 stunning color pictures of bells. The illustrations are superbly printed (in China) and look as if they have been cleaned up with a computer so that there are no irritating features in the background. But the text is disappointing both in style and content. The reader will not learn a great deal about bells from the brief accounts that introduce each section and, in many of the captions, there is nothing about the country of origin or the use of the illustrated bell. Few of the bells shown were made to be used - many are modern decorative bells. Because of this, there is not much of interest for collectors of church, temple or animal bells. As to be expected, the emphasis is on bells of America with hardly anything on bells of Europe, Africa and Asia. There is a good index but a poor bibliography. Almost all classical books on bells are out of print and none is as well illustrated as this one. However, bell collectors interested in the manufacture and history of all kinds of bells should try to get hold of a copy of 'Bells and Man' by Percival Price, published in 1983 by Oxford University Press. Regrettably, only 1000 copies were printed and it went out of print almost immediately. American collectors should look for 'The Collector's Book of Bells' by L. Elsinore Springer published in 1972 by Crown Publishers Inc, New York. This is also out of print. The illustrations in these two books are in black and white and far from the quality of Donna Baker's pictiures. But the texts and captions are full of information. Readers of French have another option of a book that is still available. It is 'Cloches de France et d'ailleurs' by Jean-Pierre Rama published in 1993 by Pierre Zech Editeur, Paris. It has beautiful illustrations and a good text but, as the title suggests, it's mainly about French bells.

An Affordable and Indispensable Volume of Drawings.......2006-02-17

Published in 1970 this Dover Book DRAWINGS OF WILLIAM BLAKE: 92 PENCIL STUDIES is still available and remains at a very affordable price. Compiled and commented on by Sir Geoffrey Keynes, this resource volume very completely addresses the important pencil drawings Blake made throughout his artistic career.

Though many of these drawings have been published before as Blake's illustrations for 'The Book of Job' and 'The Divine Comedy', this collection which spans his entire career expressing his own personal symbolism, his versions of the great myths, his allegories and his 'grotesques', many in print for the first time. Blake's spiritual nature, and his ability to express it in both poetry and paintings, here includes some wonderfully refined full frontal male and female nudes. But in the end it is his elusive, mystical vision drawings that will register with the reader fully familiar with the life of William Blake. In Blake's words 'Let a Man who has made a Drawing go on & on & he will produce a Picture or Painting, but if he chooses to leave it before he has spoil'd it, he will do a Better Thing'.

The quality of paper in this book is not of the highest, but it matters little. In fact the gradual yellowing that occurs in rag of this sort weds the content with the image even more mysteriously! Grady Harp, February 06

The Collected Works of W. B. Yeats, Volume III: Autobiographies is part of the fourteen-volume series overseen by eminent Yeats scholars Richard J. Finnerah and George Mills Harper. The series includes virtually all of the Nobel laureate's published work, with authoritative and explanatory notes.

Autobiographies consists of six autobiographical works -- Reveries Over Childhood and Youth, The Trembling of the Veil, Dramatis Personae, Estrangement, The Death of Synge, and The Bounty of Sweden -- that William Butler Yeats published together in the mid-1930s to form a single, extraordinary memoir of the first fifty-eight years of his life, from his earliest memories of childhood to winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. The great poet as a disappointing person and thinker .......2004-10-24

Yeats is without doubt one of the great English language poets of the twentieth century . His greatest poems and lines are in the hearts and minds of most lovers of poetry. How disappointing then to feel that the person is in many ways so mediocre in both his thought and his personal relationships. The whole business of automatic writing is one part of it. But also the whole search for some kind of mythic system smacks of superstition, and perhaps makes Yeats suitable for an age where the 'New Age' sections of bookstores are far larger than the Religion of Philosophy sections.
As a person Yeats seems a somewhat remote husband and distant relative even to his closest family members. This autobiography has no great moving intellectual center, no ideas which truly make sense in understanding our world . " Things fall apart the center does not hold, " the great lines which describe our condition are unfortunately not complemented by a true and deep understanding of the human situation.

A joy to read and marvellous background.......2001-01-25

The more I have learnt about Yeats and his life the more approachable and enjoyable I have found his poetry.

I bought this book for a close friend and fellow lover of Yeats poetry and read it after she did. Yeats writes about his life and philosophy with the same skill and breadth he brings to his poetry. I found the notes added for this edition both useful and interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Yeats, his philosophy, life and poetry.
