Book Description
This widely acclaimed book contains more than 100 true animal stories from Doctor Ewing's practice and military career. It is a multi-species book which includes accounts of a wide variety of animals varying in size from hamsters to whales. The many humorous, heart-warming and fascinating tales of animals, both domestic and exotic, common and uncommon make this book one of the most popular at the San Diego Zoo and Wild animal Park. Dr. Ewing's anecdotes span a period of more than 40 years and reflect his compassion, dedication and even a little "preaching" about the world of animals. It is not only entertaining but educational and one that any reader will thoroughly enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable Reading!.......2000-04-20
I think Dean Ewing's grasp of animal life is fairly accurate and comes with his many years of varied experience. He makes you realize how intelligent animals can be and how much we need to try and understand them.
Dean has great insight into pets and their owners and has some wonderful tales to tell. Every pet or animal lover should be able to relate to some of these delightful but sometimes sad stories. I only wish there were more people around like Dean Ewing who make house calls! Hopefully he will have another book to follow this one!
Very enjoyable reading and worth passing along to a friend! They will thank you for the recommendation!
Book Description
Splendido! This is perhaps the only way to describe this book, a superb photographic tableau that shows Italy from all angles with all the artistic insight and technical innovation worthy of the Bel Paese. All of Italy unfolds in a sumptuous collection of aerial images taken by photographers who know and love their own country. This is a "trophy" book on a land that, from above, appears to have been laid out by a master eye. Specially commissioned photographers have explored everywhere to bring the reader unusual perspectives on the country's breathtaking beauty and its many identities, from folk to high art. The Alps in the north and the volcano-hewn coastlines of the south, majestic cathedrals and Roman ruins, colorful cities and hidden villages-these are all part of Italy. The photos in this book invite the reader to ponder these treasures anew, while appreciating the human life in their midst. Fascinating images of familiar landmarks appear, but surprises hide around every corner. This book captures the many flavors of Italy in ways that few books can. All of Italy's regions spring to life dramatically in these gorgeous photos. Italy has cultivated beauty, art, and science for centuries, and in this book the Bel Paese itself-its terrain, its monuments, its people-appears as a masterpiece.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Wedding Present.......2007-09-04
Perfect wedding present for a couple who were engaged in Italy! Great price, immediate shipment, and impressive book! This was a wedding present, so we never took it out of the wrapper, but we're confident that the couple enjoyed it thoroughly!
Surprisingly mediocre quality of prints.......2007-01-10
As a frequent visitor and lover of Italy, I was excited to get this book. I'm still happy that I have it as it does give a birds eye view of many cities that I love, but it also has a tremendous amount of mountain photos that are pretty but redundent. I also found that the quality of the prints was not terrific. Many border on blurry and have a grainy appearance.
Very Disappointing.......2006-09-13
First - I guess I'm glad to have the book rather than not having it.
But for the price and the hype about it - plus the OPPORTUNITY - it is a great disappointment.
You will find oodles of pictures of the tops of Alpine mountain ranges - oodles of uninhabitated or slightly inhabitated capes - but none of similar landscapes with HOW ITALIANS HAVE INTERACTED with the environment. If you are looking for villages nestled in the Dolomites, fishing villages near the capes, etc. - forget it. Much of the book has been taken up with repeat after repeat of something you already looked at - or almost.
But probably the worst part of the book is the totally INFERIOR PRINTING (or picture quality). Take a rather normal magnifying glass and you will see why the pictures do NOT look good to the normal eye - there are just blotches - were they digital pictures you would see nice square PIXELS. I really suspect they have not bothered to print at 1200 dpi - OR - the original pictures are horrible - OR both! (I compared the pictures - with the glass - with many other books and the difference is STARTLING - if the originals were taken from a satellite, it might be a reason - but they surely weren't).
Another aspect of this poor printing/poor photography is that MANY of the pictures are just dark blobs with no definition - no contrast - no detail - no 'color.'
There has been a pretty bad job of editing -- just look at the ridiculous picture of the piazza in Trieste - it wouldn't even fit on your average San Marino postage stamp!
So - if you are a fan of Italy - you may appreciate the book in a very general way - but you surely will still be on the lookout for a good book which might actually cover the material you might have been hoping for in this book.
The Italy We Never See: Adventures in a Glider.......2005-11-17
For those legions of people for whom Italy is the special place in the heart this new book will serve as a feast. Imagine riding in a low flying glider from the north to the south and everywhere in between, swooping down for intimate views of lakes, cottages, villas, cities, ruins, and landscape: reading and viewing this book is very much like that quietest of all transportation modes and equally as thrilling.
Alberto Bertolazzi, and experienced travel writer, has worked with Marcello Bertinetti and other outstanding photographers to create this romantic journey to his beloved Italy from the vantage of the sky. After a warm introduction by Franco Zeffirelli, and an equally impressive preface by Giuliano Urbani, Bertolazzi and his photographers take us from volcanoes, the Alps, the lakes, and vineyards, the ruins many have never seen, the majestic palaces and villas, a perspective of Venice that is surpassingly beautiful, the cities as seen form above, to the small treasures unknown to the casual visitor. This is an insider's view of Italy and all its flavors and people.
The quality of the photographs is stunning and we are treated to page after page of splendid sites and surprising treasures, from the mundane to the internationally significant. This is simply a magnificent volume that promises, and gives, an Italy never before seen in books. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, November 05
Book Description
Sicily is a complex land of contrasts and unexpected juxtapositions. This handsome volume takes readers on a bird's-eye tour, showcasing, in the spectacular aerial photography for which White Star is renowned, the unique characteristics of the island. Readers explore eclectic architecture that reflects more than 30 centuries of history: Phoenician settlements, Greek temples, Roman amphitheaters, Norman Arab castles, and Argonese churches. Whisking us over vivid orange and lemon orchards, high above mountains and lush forests, and through the villages and cities of the island, Sicily presents a unique perspective of this island of contrasts and contradictions. Hundreds of colorful images convey the majesty of Europe's greatest natural wonder-Mt. Etna-and the vitality of cities such as Palermo, as well as the sleepy island towns.
Book Description
This volume takes readers on an aerial adventure above this ever-fascinating city and its surrounding region. A wide variety of panoramas depict the sights that are unique to Venice: the Lagoon with its islands of Burano, Torcello, and Murano; the network of canals branching out from the Grand Canal; the palaces, homes, and world-famous monuments that are all the more compelling when viewed from above. Chapters devoted to the Veneto region take readers to the neighboring cities of Vicenza, Padua, and Treviso as well as more obscure areas where photographs showcase lovely villages and castles, such as Citadel, Asolo, Bassano, and Chioggia. For anyone who wants to experience the magic of Venice and the Veneto, this volume is a souvenir to be cherished.

Great Example book!.......2003-05-17
This book has some great ideas for packaging, brochure, and anything from pillows to cans! I don't regret getting this book. It's well put together. I got the hard back and it's a keeper! The book basically has a picture of the item for example a great looking photo book for holidays. It has the text telling you about the people the promotion was done for, then it has how it was done, Who did it, materials, and print method. It's a great book for examples and stirring up creativity from looking at different products and how they are presented.

WOW! What a great book. I am searching for like books on the net! This book is a definite must for the person who provides event planning, marketing, or advertising services for clients, whether Fortune 500 or "mom and pop!" The full-four-color ideas in this book are wonderful. If not for "borrowing" the ideas, but even sparking creativity for new ones! I highly recommend this book! The worst problem is keeping it a secret from my other event planning/marketing friends! Oh, well, I'll let them think the ideas are my own! Thanks Poppy Evans! Contact Me!
Customer Reviews:
Top of the line book for beginners and intermediate reef keepers.......2007-01-09
This book is excellently illustrated and very easy to use. It is a wonderful identifier reference book and contains basic lighting, ease of keeping and many other facts that people need to know when they are purchacing corals. I would highly recommend this book.
Informative and beautiful.......2005-05-16
This is somewhat like a small encyclopedia of corals. I believe for the photos alone many would find the book enjoyable that are not practicing this hobby. The photos are breath taking and helpful and does a very good job at providing information on the requirements for the coral types. Unfortunately it is lacking in more detailed information on each species.
Certainly not definitive but very helpful. If you are a marine hobbiest I do not recommended it as the only book you should own on corals but if you are a reef aquarist it should be in your library.
Quite simply, the quickest, easiest-to-use reference guide.......2003-03-26
I've found this book to be, quite simply, the best, easiest-to-use reference guide for quickly identifying and getting essential information -FAST!- about most of the corals you'll find offered for sale in your local fish shops, and rank it right up there with Scott W. Michael's book "Marine Fishes, 500+ Essential-To-Know Aquarium Species" as the other must-have buying/reference guide for the saltwater aquarist. With its beautiful pictures, "A Practical Guide to Corals..." will also be an excellent addition to any coffee table!
Recommended.......2001-02-03
This is one of the best books that I have seen on the description and care of the most common corals for the reef aquarium. It gives information on each coral such as Common name, Scientific name, Lighting needs, Water flow, Aggressiveness and Difficulty of care. This is not a book on "how to" setup a reef tank book but an excellent reference guide on corals and the proper care of these animals. Many great pictures and short but very informative descriptions make this a must have to the Reefkeeper. By the way, Eric Borneman (a.k.a. Eric Hugo) is one of the best known most knowledgable contributors on the Internet and reefkeeping Mail and Usenet Groups.
Beginner Guide.......2001-02-03
A good starter guide for the novice reefer.I found lots of basic information, all care charts were to generalized.Good reading for identification yet lacks Big Time on care of each specific group. Look for the new release in March 2001 for hopefully a more detailed read.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific job, Paula and Lori! What an accomplishment!.......2007-10-12
What a wonderful accomplishment for Paula and Lori! The information pertaining to early purses such as misers, pockets, chatelaines, textiles and needlework purses! I especially enjoyed the chapter on purse restoration. The photos of the figural & scenic purses are absolutely amazing. The celluloid and compact purse examples were also a delight.
For everyone who knows these two lovely ladies, they know that they truly have a passion for purses. Many times I have heard of Paula donating her time to deliver public presentations, printing and passing out breakthrough information on early purses and donating them to interested parties, as well as contributing to other books including mine. If anyone deserves a pat on the back for this groundbreaking book, it is these two ladies, Paula Higgins and Lori Blaser. Congratulations ladies! Well done!
Magnificent!.......2007-05-17
What a beautiful book; filled with glorious bags of the past, historical information and current values. There are hundreds of bags, created using techniqes such as beading, embroidery, tapestry, netting, crochet, knitting, tambour, loom, petit point and various stitchery. Gorgeous bags are displayed - eye-smacking delicious- that I have not seen in other collectible publications; a real plus for collectors. There is a chapter dedicated to restoration of vintage bags, with instructions for repair and cleaning, plus photos; tips when purchasing bags; and choosing the right purse frames. At the back of the book, page 256, I was delighted to see the two contemporary bags by Katerina Musetti, an artist and established opera singler; the bags are exquisite. It is obvious this book is a culmination of Paula and Lori's purse obsession, historical studies and labor. I highly recommend this inspiring book for collectors, as well as, bag enthusiasts; a book not to be missed. Review by Lydia F. Borin, The Beadwrangler
Passion for Purses.......2007-05-12
'Passion for Purses' is a beautiful, quality reference book for all purse lovers & collectors; from novice to the serious collector. The book has special emphasis on very early antique purses by one of the most knowledgeable persons around today. Contains previously unseen purses from private collections that have never before been published. Hundreds of pictures on quality paper, excellent information on the many catagories of purses that are included. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a passion for purses. Great book for study or pleasure.A Passion for Purses, 1600-2005
Purse book to die for.......2007-05-09
For those of us mere mortals who can love from afar and have a "Passion for Purses" and.. the collectors among us, WOW. This book is a consumate collection of the incredible history and workmanship of this much needed and desired personal item. The descriptions and photographs of each purse made me feel as though I was almost visiting them in person. The depth and breadth of the collections plus the amazing amount of detail & photos given on the handpicked items for this book made me feel as though I got a real education and my money's worth for sure. I still cannot figure out how these authors gained so much knowledge and still have lives other than their immersion in purses...do they, I ask? This book was written by people who LOVE what they do. I have read and reread this book too many times already. My husband actually was impressed. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable as I was an antique dealer for years, but I have seen things in this book that I never even knew existed. A "Passion for Purses" - my compliments. This is the first book I have ever bothered to review but - it is just that FABULOUS.
Customer Reviews:
AN EXCELLENT GUIDE TO THE PROPER CARE OF VINTAGE GARMENTS.......2001-11-10
Don't let the small size of this book fool you! It is filled with excellent instructions on how to care for vintage clothing, properly. I'm guessing most readers will be as surprised as I was by the items that actually harm our precious clothes. My entire closet is set up incorrectly. Now I know why the items I was using to protect my clothing were actually harming them.
I love the way this book feels to the touch. The paper on which it is printed glided through my fingers as I was reading it. The photos are crisp. I contacted one of the suppliers of acid-free products from the list in the back of the book. They have an excellent website and reasonable prices on products I could not find locally.
If you buy new clothing regularly, the care of your garments can be poor and it isn't really noticed. When you have a love affair with vintage clothing however, I feel it is our duty to care for these items properly, so they will survive another ten, fifty or even one hundred years. This book will teach you how to protect the lovely textiles, clothing and accessories passed down to us by our parents' and grandparents' generations.

Instant Expert!.......2001-11-19
As the backcover states, Instant Expert:Everything you need to know- it is all here in a quick little reference guide. If you want summarized information that is concise and easy to read, this is the book. A great little resource for the novice who just wants a little help with the basics.
A good guide for the beginner.......2000-07-26
This book is a great introduction to the world of vintage clothing. It includes the basics of collecting clothing from 1850 through the 1970's. The information is nicely organized and is easy to find. Advanced collectors, however, probably will not find any new information in this small book.
not bad for the price.......2000-04-25
Book has nice glossary of vintage fabrics and desriptions. Covers a wide range of designers and there history. The book is on the right track ,but it's only 120 pages and could use a bit more info.

Book Description
Mary Wigman, Germany's premier modern dancer between the two world wars, envisioned the dancer in the thrall of ecstatic and demonic forces. Transforming the performer into an abstract configuration of energy in space, her works subverted the traditional eroticization of the female dancer. Critics in her own time and historians since have hailed her as a major innovator of dance modernism.
What commentators have not acknowledged until recently, however, is her collaboration with the Nazis. Under the Third Reich, Wigman subtly transformed the choreographic themes that had brought her fame during the Weimar Republic. Reverting to more traditional images of the female dancer, her works represented the division between male and female spheres so central to fascist ideology. Her choreographic career thus challenges the prevailing view of a sharp break between Weimar and Nazi culture.
Dance and cultural historian Susan Manning traces Wigman's career from Monte Verita, an artist's colony where she spent the First World War in voluntary exile, to West Berlin, where she premiered her final work just months after the building of the Berlin Wall. Manning argues that Wigman challenged the voyeurism of the male spectator while projecting an essentialized national identity, a mystical aura of Germanness.
Introducing methods not usually found in dance studies, Manning spins Wigman's story into an interdisciplinary space bounded by ongoing dialogues on the history of the body and the sexual and national politics of artistic modernism.
