Excellent guide book.......2005-07-06

This LP was all i needed for the russian leg of my trans-siberian trip, It offers more than enough to keep you busy for the standard one month tourist visa. (The people above must have never gotten off the train between Moscow and Irkutsk!) If you intend to branch out in mongolia or china then you will obiously need to supplement this guide. It is a short compact guide focused specificly on the train routes, and it covers them remarkably well.

Bryn Thomas' Trans-Siberian Handbook the way to go.......2005-04-23

You'll get more of the generic country information that LP is good at (and provides in their various country-specific guides) but we found the research in the Handbook provides a much more informative passage across the time-zones. By far the best and most up-to-date source of information on booking tickets is a website called "www.seat61.com". Having tried various "tour" organisations, we ended up booking all arrangements through one of the recommended Russian agencies for half the price - all through internet cafes on the hoof in Bolivia! As for companion guides, much preferred the handbook.

Good, but fast outdated!.......2004-03-28

We've used the book in july/august 2002 for a trip from Beijing to Helsinki. Much information in the book, but a lot of it is copy-past'ed from the country guides.
Another reviewer remarked on the rapidly changing circumstances in the countries... no guide can outrun those.
We visited Beijing, Irkutsk, Listvanka, Jekaterinaburg, Moscow and Saint-Peterburg. Most of the time we found accomodation from the book. At that time, the Trans-siberian handbook (Thomas Bryn - ISBN 1873756704) was older.

We had both books: LP fresh of the press and Thomas Bryn's book - THE guide to have.
Thomas' had a new edition in february 2004. Best to take the most recent editions of guidebooks. The handbook is more interesting to read, so that's a must. You'll have plenty of time to read!

The trip is recommended to anyone: we found a british couple with 2 kids doing it! Don't be too easily discouraged, try to take the east-west trip (to avoid wagons full of tourists!).

A Nearly Impossible Task.......2003-12-18

Given the pace that Russia, Mongolia, and China are changing and developing, it is an incredibly daunting task to write a travel guie attempting to cover all three countries in any level of detail. Inevitably hostels shut down, restaurants move, store hours change, and even train schedules fluxuate.

This book is a decent rough guide and the only one of its kind. For that reason I rated it a three. It was sufficient for my trip on the railway, but I wouldn't call it a "Survival guide" as such. I'm usually a huge supporter of The Lonely Planet, but in this particular instance they have not done a supurb job.

Lot of information, but not correct.......2003-08-07

I was impressed about amount of information, but there are so many errors, especially in russian words and transcription, I can count up to 5 errors on page. Seems that publisher was in a hurry and didn't correct original text or author(corrector?) was not competent in this stuff.

Offering fascinating brief biographies of famous pirates who really lived, as well as information about how pirates in general dressed and lived, and the difference between a pirate and a privateer or corsair (a sea thief authorized to help his nation's war effort by targeting the ships of other nations). Superbly enhanced with the artwork of John James, Real Pirates offers fascinating accounts especially recommended for any youngster curious about pirates and piracy.

This book is great! It has all sorts of facts about how the dog's body and mind works. It has experiments that could be used for science fair projects or just for fun at home. The dogs have fun too! It would be a great book for any young person who wanted to understand their pet more, and especially for any aspiring veterinarian! The information in it is very informative for both children and adults.

Photographs by Francesca Yorke lift this book out of the "yet another book about containers" rut. She has managed to illustrate the text effectively, providing photographs that are relevant and practical as well as attractive.

Most of the ideas for containers-found around-the-house here are pretty standard stuff, although the writer has presented tin cans and metal containers in an interesting way. Personally, I'd be afraid that plants grown in tin cans, especially the small ones like beer cans, would have their roots cooked in warm weather. Maybe in a shady spot they might be worth a try.

The writer gives some information about planting and watering that may be useful to the novice gardener, but mostly it's the usual drill; filling teapots, baskets boxes drawers and wooden toys with easy to grow plants.

There is a fairly brief plant directory and a U.S. source list for pots and plants (even though the writer is English). The cover blurb says this book is a new approach to container gardening. I can't imagine what the publisher thought was new in this book.

Lots of great ideas, and every inspirational........2003-02-19

This book is all about the joy of finding junk and using it to create an interesting and ecclectic container garden. It's my two loves combined, junk hunting and gardening! I really liked how it dealt with different materials, and the pictures gave me more than enough ideas. It had simple steps outlined (including drill bit sizes and other information), and even though I've used a drill once in my life, I think I'd be ready to tackle some of the projects outlined in the book. Overall, it was an excellent book, with lots of inspirational ideas and pictures. If you've ever been at a loss for interesting containers to add to your garden, this is definately the book that will give you tons of inspiration.

A quick read, packed with philosophical and insightful concepts. If you're a tango dancer, this book will speak to you as you compare what she is writing with what you already know. The Tao of Tango will have you nodding your head vigorously, agreeing that what she says is in fact true. Johanna Siegmann's
comparison of female/male energy to tango is a thought provoking, but compelling theory filled with accuracy. I couldn't put this book down .

The Tao of Tango by Johanna Siegmann is a delightful chronicle of her discovery of the inner world of Argentine Tango - plus an insightful look at the application of Taoist philosophy to both Life and Tango.
On the surface, Tango is rooted in the sensuality and seduction that goes on between a man and a woman. But deeper things are going on. As Ms. Seigmann discovered, it is a conversation "in some language of the soul that resided in some part of me I never knew existed."
Drawing on key principles of Taoism, Ms. Siegmann shows how all people, whether men or women, are mixtures of characteristics that are either yang (masculine) or yin (feminine), and in order to be successful, in either Life or in Tango, each person must have these energies in balance within themselves. Yet in our post-Feminism world, this is rarely the case, for either gender. Johanna Siegmann discovered, as have many others, that learning to tango is much more than learning a new dance.

It's About the Connection.......2005-12-20

This book is not so much about steps or sequences, so don't expect to learn cool moves from it. It's more about what lays beyond the movement. A balance between two energies: feminine and masculine that is what creates that strong unforgettable connection between people in dance or in life.

I recommend this book to anyone, either you are dancing tango or not; it's short and very easy to read. And if you don't find a nice dance technique suggestion in it, you might find something that would be applicable in your every day life in a relation with your significant one or friends, or colleagues at work.

Understanding the Power of Balance.......2005-05-16

The Tao of Tango is successful because it probes the right questions.
As the result of "feminism", we can enjoy a fairer balance of power with men, but what femininity is still remains a complete mystery to us. The book dares to praise passivity, surrendering and following, and reminds us that those words can still carry derogative connotations. At the same time it tells us about male and female energies present in each one of us and with that, it frees us of limiting patterns of behavior.

Dancing Tango is a beautiful way to play, rehearse and observe how we are as women and men. The Tao of Tango refers to it in a provocative, measured and grounded way.

Deep and moving.......2007-05-17

It's hard to believe Martin Luther King was 39 when he died. His eloquence can be heard in his famous speeches but the fullness of who he was, his spiritual depth, can only be heard in his sermons. These CDs are inspiring and profoundly moving. He is one of the greatest American preachers of all time and the greatest in the twentieth century.

I have had A Knock at Midnight in book and cassette tape form for many years, and at least twice a year I listen to them. The sermons are timeless, and make clear that we were in the presence of greatness when Dr. King was alive. Listening to this CD truly is inspirational. What a blessing to listen to these sermons of my brother in Christ Dr. King. Never throughout my life did I hear these. Why?

America, wake up!!! You are a great nation, because of the freedom bestowed upon us by none other than Jesus, the Messiah (Christ).

And those people, brought here as slaves (believe me I've heard it ad nauseam going through school, but just listen), have helped make us a great nation!

Now listen - we are ALL slaves - every one of us. To who? To ourselves!

If you think I'm a religious zealot - absolutely, freakin' not. I am a former slave, that's all. No more, no less. Saved by the blood of the Lamb. And now filled with the love of His Spirit, and loving my fellow man, regardless of color or background.

I look forward to meeting you in heaven Dr. King!

A Profound Message.......2002-07-21

The sermons in A Knock at Midnight are both deeply moving and a powerful reminder of the greatness of Dr. King. This collection should be read and heard by everyone, especially the young of today who have been fed a Dr. King who somehow only delivered one speech ("I Have a Dream"). As a middle school teacher I found the sermons to be an excellent way for my students to move beyond the platitudes about Dr. King to a much deeper understanding of his life and ministry. To read and listen to these great sermons is an absolutely wonderful experience, but at the same time a sad reminder that today we have no great voice of moral authority like his. Fortunately we do have his words and voice preserved for us and our children.

Notice I refer to the cassettes and the companion book as an EXPERIENCE as I both listened to and read the REVEREND King! Although the media focused on the visible part of his ministry, the civil rights movement, his sermons are profound and awesome in their implications for today as well as their in their powerful delivery during the mid-1950's through 1960's. Although I will cherish both the cassette series and the book, it is through hearing the SPEAKING of Dr. King that really made me breathless! Thank you LORD God for sending us your messenger Dr. King to give us a wonderful earthly ministry for a brilliant and brief time (much like Jesus Christ). Simply awesome!

A 40ish spinster finds danger and adventure when she spends a small inheritance travelling to Budapest on the eve of World War II. This is about as good as romantic thrillers get, with a heroine who has lived long enough to be interesting, a real villain and a hero who does not resemble Fabian. In the long ago world of the 1930's, when unmarried daughters were at the disposal of their families, Maggie Ramsay is the unmarried daughter who sets aside her own life when her father falls ill. Her youth fades as the years go by, and only her father's death releases her. Defying family pressure, she grasps at her first real freedom since college by taking the Orient Express to Budapest, a sentimental journey into her own past. The plot takes off from there, and is nicely breathless, with a bonus of authentic seeming period detail for England and Hungary. Why are books like this so hard to find and why do they go out of print? Read it if you can get hold of it---it's perfect for an evening's self-indulgence.
