    Book Description

1924. Illustrated from photographs. In his introduction Cooper suggests to the reader that the next time he or she goes to the circus to try a new viewpoint. To remember that we are all animals, we all belong to the same kingdom and with that in mind, experiment with the idea of looking at those animals not as just so many mere brutes, but as merely a different branch of the animal kingdom to which you belong. Look upon them as foreigners, as visitors to your land from a different shore, strange but willing to learn, and with far greater perceptive powers, perhaps, than we have. Contents: Inside the Training Den; Tramping it to Cagedom; Character in the Cages; The Dog Wagon; Menagerie Psych-Stuff; The Ellyphants are Coming-g-g!; A Hundred Tons of Prankishness; and The Keeper of the Bulls.

            Book Description

            Saddle up,
            ride back with me.
            You take the Thoroughbred you
            have lessons on;
            I'll ride my fat Morgan.

Jessie Haas's invitation is an opportunity for adventure -- a ride back in time through 65 million years of horse history.

Meet eohippus, the small, brown-spotted, four-toed ancestor of the modern horse. Watch a youth of ancient times -- courageous, determined, awed -- be the first to attempt to ride a wild horse. Hear the thunder of Genghis Khan's horde riding by and the clang of knights jousting in a tournament. Most of all, feel the love that has existed between humans and horses for thousands of years. It reveals itself as a lonely man lets a colt into his kitchen, as a rider cherishes her horse's wet kiss, and as a starving soldier shares a biscuit with his mount.

In 104 astonishing poems, Jessie Haas captures both the whole sweep of equine history and individual moments that will haunt you. She and her fat Morgan follow Hoofprints back in time to show us the hoofprints on our own hearts.

            5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Ride.......2004-07-02

Adapted from a review that appeared in the Brattleboro Reformer:

"Saddle up," says the poet, "ride back with me," and in a few short lines we travel back "past buckboard wagons, buffalo hunts.../ and every sort of infidel invader," until we reach such an ancient time that horses aren't creatures to ride anymore. Then we walk,

            45 million years or so,
            our brown-spotted companions
            pattering beside us,
            on an ever-increasing number
            of toes.

Toes? Yes. It's just one of the fascinating details in Hoofprints: Horse Poems, by Jessie Haas. Beginning around the time of the dinosaurs, it follows the evolution and history of horses and humanity up to the present day. Along the way, it offers readers an intensely personal view of history. In `Riding with the Horde,' for example, we don't just learn about Genghis Kahn, we become part of his army in a "long brown river of horses," caught up in a rhythm of riding and conquest that seems to have no end.

There are many sad moments in these poems, but joyful ones too. When we see the ancient riders on the Asian steppe, their gold-trimmed clothing "Catching sun, / Like a million cobwebs on a morning meadow," we understand the freedom and power people sought when they first began to ride. That longing echoes through a later poem, `Big Top,' about a North American boy and a circus horse whose separate notions of freedom intersect then move apart, "widening farther and farther / into the unknown."

The beautiful design of this book is worthy of its content, and it would be a wonderful gift for a lover of poetry, horses, or history. It's also perfect for use in the classroom, and it should inspire some interesting social studies projects.

Jeanne Walsh is Reference Librarian at Brooks Memorial Library in Brattleboro, Vermont.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars ... A very strong manual on how to train doggies ..........2002-02-26

If you don't believe in physically reprimanding your dog under any circumstances ... then this is not your book ...

But if like us, you believe that perhaps, there may not be such great divide between new and older training methods, as many are wont to have us believe - and you are prepared to keep a reasonably open mind ... then give this book a try ... there is much to learn here ...

This is very much a reading book, but the writing is well done, humorous and light. The author writes convincingly in a conversational manner but without excess and remains focused on the primary purpose of the book - teaching us how to teach our doggies ...

Content-wise, the book is substantial and covers a wide range of behavioural & training topics, from (a) how to teach the basic commands, (b) how to deal with common problems, from excessive barking, jumping, biting & aggression, to (c) training the doggie for the obedience ring.

Remarkably, all the above is accomplished in a comfortable & complete manner. At no time does it seem that Mr. Terrel is dealing with or rushing the reader through any issue in a superficial manner. Nor were we left with the impression of impossible complexibility. The book is well balanced and there is always much to appreciate & consider.

Characteristically, an issue or problem is identified or discussed, the author then provides a series of possible alternative training methods, some his own, others which he has read or heard of, and may or may not have tried. Where appropriate Mr. Terrell presents his caveats and recommendations in reasonable detail, explaining how and why a particular training method might or might not work. The author explains that no one training method is suitable for all dogs.

Many training manuals simply suggests a method for training or eradicating a problem, but stops there, and does not tell us what to do, when it doesn't work! This book offers multiple options, which we find particularly useful (and we are free to choose what we think best for us & our dogs). This adds the much-appreciated dimension of flexibility.

Structurally, book is reasonably well indexed, and makes it easy for a more experienced trainer (or those wishing only to address a particular issue) to read selectively without need to plough through all the pages; adding value and making the book a good reference source.

Yes, Mr. Terrel is not adverse to 'paddling' the dog, but it must be said that the author does represent this (often most sensitive) aspect of training carefully and only advocates physical handling or reprimand within very limited boundaries & within the context of the severity of the problem faced by the trainer.

Nevertheless and while we are ourselves not particularly convinced that physical reprimand is the answer ... that does not detract from the value of the book as a whole. We take the approach that we don't have to agree with all that Mr. Terrel writes, to appreciate he has much experience, from which we can (albeit selectively) learn. Whenever physical reprimand is suggested, we substitute the physical reprimand with another form of acceptable reprimand such as low growls, withholding of attention, temporary confinement etc etc ...

                Good training manual.

1 out of 5 stars I was a little disturbed by his chapter on reprimanding.......2000-09-16

I enjoyed the introduction, but the chapter on how to reprimand left me cold. I am quite disturbed by his "paddling" suggestions. I am thoroughly against hitting dogs so I suppose I'm one of the "80%" who, in his opinion, are not firm enough with their dogs. It seemed obvious to me that after his "reprimand" the dogs obeyed because they were afraid of him. This is not the relationship I want with my animals. This book was a mistake.

                5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2000-08-18

This book is a phenomenal collection of dog training solutions. I looked at nine other books in book stores, pet stores and online and could find nothing to compare with "Bad Dogs Need It...Good Dogs Deserve It". It truly is an encyclopedia of solutions. If you are serious about changing your dogs behavior regarding even one problem, don't bother with any book but this one. It is a masterpiece. This man clearly loves dogs and understands how they learn.

5 out of 5 stars Real life experience.......2000-08-17

I have tried many of the tips in the book and find them to be very effective. Better yet, the book is an entertaining read. Nick writes like he is talking to his best friend and his wry sense of humor comes through in every page. I have given this book to friends who didn't even have a dog! They enjoyed it too.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource for all dog owners.......2000-07-26

After purveying what seems to be countless resources in the specialty of dog training and obedience, I have found exactly what I was looking for in this book. As an AKC Certified trainer, I am very pleased with both the format and steady stream of experience based solutions this book contains. Mr. Terrell clearly exhibits a solid knowledge and understanding of canine obedience and show training. While many authors simply offer re-hashed cookie cutter solutions, Mr. Terrell provides a wide variety of solutions with multiple angles to multiple canine obedience problems - a very unique approach that I have found to be quite effective in my daily dealings with the dogs and owners I am personally responsible to. I highly recommend this book to any dog owner seeking to know and understand all canines.

If you live in an arid area, remember that "there is only a certain amount of water in the world and they aren't making any more of it." An acre of grass takes 27,000 gallons of water a week to keep green. It's hard for some to give up that patch of green grass that America equates with leisure time and suburban living.
Having lived in Central Australia, I advocate for full desert landscaping using native plants along with exotics from dry countries.
Xeriscaping (water-wise planting) doesn't mean a yard that is a barren moonscape. Think of colorful crape myrtles, bougainvilleas, firebushes, palms, yuccas, and many more interesting plants. Artfully placed, they provide a green view and offset the gravel that replaces grass in a water saving landscape. Mulch everything to insulate the soil and keep moisture in the ground.

5 out of 5 stars A recipe book for classroom teachers of creative dance.......2002-09-15

This book is the most practical one for teachers of creative dance in the classroom, although it is much more than a classroom tool. "Creative Dance for All Ages" is easy to read, simple to grasp and the lessons almost teach themselves. Gilbert starts you from the basics of movement using vocabulary and concepts simplified from Rudolph von Laban's work in movement analysis. Her methods are generous and joyful, reflecting her passion for giving children (and adults) the experience of dance without fear or feeling threatened. Each chapter focuses on one of the elements of dance (and movement) providing multiple choices for activities in each of her lesson plan components. Her basic lesson plan is sound and safe, divided into 5 main components and progressing from (1) Introduction and warm-up using the dance element, (2) exploring the element, (3) developing dance skills, (4) creating with the element explored and (5) cooling down.
If you are a teacher of dance or a teacher in the school system, you will find this book invaluable! Many lesson plans are already laid out for you. Most may be adapted to expand student learning in the academic curriculum. This book is also great for dancers looking to expand their compositional approach. Every teacher will want a copy ready at their teaching fingertips.

5 out of 5 stars A complete guide to teaching creative dance.......1999-01-29

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in teaching creative dance, whether you have dance experience yourself or not. The book provides a thorough overview of what creative dance is and how to teach it. There are hundreds of dance exercises included, as well as sample lesson plans and useful suggestions for how to structure your classes. As a dance teacher, I have found this book to be the most helpful I've encountered -- I use it constantly!

Evoking a dog's-eye view of the world, this heartwarming photo journal and tribute chronicles the life of a special golden retriever, Rufus, from his days as an abandoned pet to those as a beloved "dog" photographer. Together Rufus and his owner travel the surrounding neighborhood, and, with camera strapped to his collar, Rufus "snaps" photos of his pals and the people, places, and things that he finds of particular interest during his daily jaunts. The often humorous photos and accompanying narrative capture the reactions the other dogs and humans have to the dog photographer and present Rufus's favorite beaches, parks, and city scenes from a uniquely different perspective. Dog lovers in particular will identify with the remarkable bond of trust and loyalty that dog and owner had for each other.

4 out of 5 stars A great gift book for any dog lover !.......2004-08-18

                                  Neat book!
All the pictures were taken by the dog, Rufus. I'm a dog owner so I know these photos weren't staged. I've tried taking photographs of other dogs too, and the ones I took look nothing like these. Rufus must have been able to get real close, and they're all looking straight at him like "What theEE

The people shots are funny too, because you know they're all doing a double take. The story behind Rufus is kind of sad at the end, but it makes realize that there are lots of dogs like Rufus out there that just need a home.
We all need to be responsible pet owners to help control the animal population!

Highly recommended! This would make a great gift book for any dog lover.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A Sweet Story .......2004-08-09

"What a sweet story!"...was my first reaction after reading this book. Reiji Kanemoto presents the special relationship forged between him and his dog Rufus in a charming, poignant, and often humorous way. All the photographs, by Rufus and his "dad" Reiji alike, are wonderful! Anyone who has or has had a dog will surely enjoy reading this book. It is great for children, too!

                                      Book Description

Here are over four hundred quotations--not only one-line zingers but stanzas of verse and full paragraphs of narrative--on the endless fascination of gardening. The great gardening writers of past and present are amply represented, but these varied selections also range the entirety of recorded literature, from the Bible and tenth-century Japanese diarist Sei Sh-onagon through Chaucer and Shakespeare to Dickens, Whitman, and even Prince Charles, as well as Jane Austen, Geoffrey Charlesworth, Helena Rutherford Ely, Robert Frost, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ted Hughes, Henry James, Thomas Jefferson, and Gertrude Jekyll.

"Nature does not hesitate to interfere with me. So I do not hesitate to tamper with it."--Henry Mitchell

"The tulips are too excitable."--Sylvia Plath

"My garden is an honest place. Every tree and every vine are incapable of concealment, and tell after two or three months exactly what sort of treatment they have had."--Ralph Waldo Emerson

"I like trees because they seem more resigned to the way they have to live than other things do."--Willa Cather

                                                Book Description

The contributors to this volume are noted scholars from Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Morocco, Poland, the Soviet Union, and Spain. Each has stepped somewhat outside of his or her usual academic interest to consider how the writings of a particular Arab philosopher or of a group of Arab philosophers were introduced into a particular European university. Their essays identify the European professor or scholar who first introduced the works of an Arab philosopher into his university, speak about the works themselves, and explore what prompted the original European interest in the particular philosopher or philosophers. Thus, by explaining how medieval European universities first approached Arab philosophy, these papers contribute to the growing interest in the curriculum and general life of those important institutions.
