This is truly an excellent book,a joy to look at,packed with lots of information. However it is not really a book suitable to be taken in the field, the authors smaller book mammals of southern, central and eastern africa would be a better book to take into the field. The authors really know the animals and their passion for the subject comes out in their writing.

4 out of 5 stars Field Guide to the Mammals of Southern Africa.......2001-05-31

This book is nicely organized. The animals are separated into their prospective families. This is especially helpful for the scientific minded reader. While on safari if I see an animal that is most likely a carnivore, I will know exactly where to look it up.

The pictures are very clear and the description focuses on the distinguishing characters of each species. The descriptions are very logical and easy to follow... i.e. the blaze on the nose of this antelope is continuous therefore, it is species A, where the blaze on the nose of the next antelope (which looks just like species A) is not continuous, therefore it is species B.

4 out of 5 stars Good source for species identification.......1999-02-17

The is book has become a diary for collecting plainsgame in Southern Africa. I have kept notes and records in this book to track animals I have collected and those remaining on my wish list.

Additionally I recommend this book for those who are on their first few trips to So. Africa for a hunting expedition or site-seeing holidays.

Southern Africa's rich wildlife heritage includes 291 species of land living mammals. Of these, approximately 200 species are likely to be seen.

This handy field guide provides information on these 200 land mammals of the region and will assist the reader to identify the various species. Every entry has a small map indicating where they occur, an illustration of the animal, its paw print and a description of its size, habitat and habits.

The text and plates appear in the standard sequence of animal classification systems, and information is provided on orders and families, whilst the common names are also provided. There is also a section on the climate and vegetation of the Southern African sub-region.

Authentic in detail and color, the plates are beautifully executed and the animals are proportionally grouped together where possible. In its reference section a glossary, bibliography, index of scientific names, index of English names and index of Afrikaans names can assist the reader.

Having recently completed a safari in Southern Africa, I had the chance to evaluate many portable field guides on the fauna of the region. I found Smither's ( a smaller version of the encyclopedic tome that is considered the benchmark work on southern African mammals) to be informative, easy to use, and beautifully illustrated. Helpful for both the naturalist as well as the sportsman, there are comparitive scale drawings that are quite accurate. A must for nature-oriented travelers to the region.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for Tourists too.......2006-08-23

I first picked up the NFT guide for New York City in May of 2006 when I was looking for a tourbook for a long weekend trip I had planned. I now have the Chicago and Boston books as well.

These books are the ultimate guide to a city and are not just for people new to the cities. They provide EXCELLENT coverage of the public transportation systems and numbered nieghborhood maps. As well as the locations of resturants, coffe shops, bookstores, edcuational instutions, hospitals, shopping and more.

The design of the books; compact with a black elastic band to either hold your place in the text or to keep items secure within the book, easy to read, and somewhat sarcastic demeanor; is a joy.

If you like to travel, these books are a must.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide book........2006-08-01

This guidebook's title is right on: it's not for tourists. It's for those of us who are moving to Boston and need good maps, information on T-stops and bus lines (very helpful, as no other guidebook I've seen shows bus lines), restaurants, bars, etc. We don't need information on fancy hotels and the Freedom Trail- for that, a different guidebook might do. But this is the one worth buying and keeping tucked in your purse or bag when you're out and about in the city.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is my Savior.......2006-01-22

As a new Bostonian this book has saves me a million times already. If you are newly moved to Boston, this book is a definite must have. There is no rhyme or reason to the streets of the city. Boston was made before the grid pattern existed. Streets constantly change names and directions. Half of the time there is no street sign, and if there is it is microscopic. This perfect compact book fits nicely in your purse or pocket so it is extremely portable and easy to carry with you. It is filled with maps of all areas of Boston and also includes some surrounding areas. It is mostly a map book but also lists entertainment, nightlife, schools, liquor stores, grocery stores, restaurants, banks, etc. Has multiple maps of each area including a public transportation map and a key map. Maps are very user friendly and easy to read. I have gotten lost multiple times and this book has always helped me find my way. There is a street index in the back and an elastic band that you can use to hold the page you need. A small price to pay for your sanity while navigating the city!

5 out of 5 stars Keeps me from getting lost while walking around Boston.......2005-06-13

I bought this book off Amazon and was a little ticked off when it came because:
                A) It was so small
                B) Half of it was maps

However I have come to love this little book for precisely those reasons. It's the ultimate walking around the city book. It's small enough to fit in your pocket, yet the maps are detailed enough to show every street. The authors accomplish this two ways: there are a lot of map pages, and the guide doesn't try to cover too large an area. If you live in Medford or Arlington, you're out of luck. Somerville is as far north as the guide goes.

Since each map page covers such a small area, you have to turn pages fairly often, but this is not a big deal because:
                A) The authors let the map pages overlap considerably, so it's easy to orient yourself on the new page.
                B) The maps cover neighborhoods, using logical boundaries. For example, one map page will stop at the charles river, and the next will pick up on the other side.

By devoting three map pages to each neighbourhood (essentials, entertainment, and transportation), the book can convey a lot of information without being cluttered.

Since it fits in your back pocket, this guide is best suited to those taking public transportation. It covers probably ~85% of the T's network (some outlying areas are excluded) and also includes bus routes.

I have been using Rand McNally's street guide boston when I drive around. It's great in the suburban areas. Since its pages are big and is spiral bound, I can keep one page open in the passenger seat. However since it uses a grid system, the positioning of the page boundaries is arbitrary. Since there is no overlap between the pages, navigating around the page boundaries can be a pain.

If you move to Boston, you will need some type of map. There is no rhyme or reason to the streets here.

5 out of 5 stars You REALLY Woudn't Want to...But You DO Want to Read This Book!.......2007-02-17

Humorous treatment of a ghastly subject...this is our first encounter with the You Wouldn't Want To... Series. You Wouldn't Want to be an Aztec Sacrifice: Gruesome Things You'd Rather Not Know is an over the top cartoonish, yet factual and upfront look at the history of Aztec sacrifice told as if YOU were there...the one being sacrificed to the Gods! This wonderful book has an introduction that gives some basic background on the Rise of the Aztec civilization, including an inset map showing the location (handy for young readers) and then a progression of chapters starting with how you would have lived (being an Aztec noble), paying tribute, being captured in a "flower battle" (nothing to do with actual flowers, heh), the long walk through the desert to the Aztec capital, how sacrifices were chosen, and goes into exactly what happens as the day of sacrifice approaches. This is a ghastly subject that is given a humorous spin, yet still manages to tell the whole story, loaded with interesting facts and tidbits about life in Mesoamerica! Each two page spread features a main narrative in addition to a set of "photo" illustrations along the bottom or side with additional information and in the top right hand corner, each has a "handy hint" to help you along the way...these hints include advice like "make an offering to the city's guardian god - he might protect you from the Aztecs" (offered on the page where the Aztecs are coming for the tribute payments or "Always keep plenty of obsidian (volcanic glass) for weapon blades. If danger threatens you won't have time to climb the volcano to get more!"

Overall, I love the format and humor used to deal with a subject that might otherwise be hard to effectively teach to kids without it becoming really depressing and/or for those subjects that never seem PC, but still really, really need to be taught. I give it five stars and recommend it as part of a larger reading set on the Aztec, after your child(ren) reads some other books on the culture and history of these Mesoamericans!! Excellent text, lots of humor, and the illustrations really bring the message home and include their own humor...they really make the story!

5 out of 5 stars The best historical series for kids!.......2004-06-30

The series "You Wouldn't Want To Be..." is the best I've seen for children and for adults. I am teacher and I love them for myself as well. They are short, accurate and have the best color illustrations. Get them all. I love this one on the Aztecs. It is gory but good.

3 out of 5 stars I didn't know type could be so dull........2002-03-31

I honestly had trouble staying awake reading this one. I'm very interested in type design and typography but the pace of this book made me feel like a kid with attention deficit disorder watching C-Span. There's a lot of interviews so definitely get your money's worth. Illustrations are bit sparse for a book on type and the whole book comes across as überconservative.

4 out of 5 stars A book on type should be designed better than this........2001-07-14

The four stars are for the content, which is generally excellent and has not been published in other books. Everyone will have their favorite chapters, but the interview with Dwiggins is particularly illuminating and amusing.

My problem with this book is its astonishingly poor design. The layout of the pages works well, even though there are few illustrations. The paper is a shiny, bright white that positively hurts my eyes. If the book featured photography, I could understand. But it's all black type on snow -- nasty. Not to mention that the stock itself stinks. It has a heavy chemical odor, and consequently is difficult to hold at a comfortable reading distance.

If Rauri McLean did not want to use ligatures, he should have choosen a type that did not require their use. The crashing fs disturb me. Also, the beginnings of chapters are not flagged well. They begin with a drop cap followed by a short introduction in italics. This would probably work if the drop caps were larger, or in a different color. As it is, it's difficult to pick out a subject by simply thumbing through the book.

I understand that McLean was trained by the great typographer Jan Tschichold, whom I admire enormously. However, I don't see much of his influence in this glaring white, smelly book.

4 out of 5 stars Thoughts of Great Typographers.......1997-01-18

This is a great compilation of the thoughts of numerous renowned typographers and type designers. It is not light reading, but consequently provides great insight. McLean has done a great job with all aspects of the book, including its layout

3 out of 5 stars Lovely Photos- Outdated Information.......2007-05-05

This is a large, expensive book with beautiful photographs. It was written too long ago to be of any serious use to folks keeping Dendrobatids. Care information is paltry and the taxonomy is (now) inaccurate. Some photos are misidentified (The "*Epipedobates femoralis*" on pg. 230 is *Lithodytes lineatus*- not even a Dendrobatid!) My largest concern is that it has no information or insight into the rampant smuggling/habitat destruction that is currently a major concern of Poison frog keepers. Some of the frogs photographed (including one on the cover!) are injured or sick. There are photographs that amount to advertisements printed in the book.

This said, the photos are very nice, and there are an abundance of photos of species not commonly available in the hobby. The large format makes it ideal to showcase just how beautiful the frogs are.

Wonderful book with beautiful picture.Even if you don't have anything with frogs I think you will have something with frogs after looking through this book.

5 out of 5 stars A coffee table book that could BE the coffee table!.......2006-11-04

Great book with great color photos. Very detailed information and maps. Care information. An all round good reference....the only knock being...it's a little too large.....but not a bad price/value for it's size on the other hand. If you are interesting in keeping PDF's then this is a must have...a wealth of information!

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Poison Frog family........2006-06-28

This book is beautiful. It contains many amazing photos of the various Poison Frog species, along with descriptions and valuable info. I just love this book! If you are interested in learning about captive care of these frogs this book won't tell you much, as it is really more of a coffee table book. Even so, I'd get this book if you keep or plan to keep Poison Frogs at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Book.......2005-08-19

Lots of great, full page photos! Descriptions of frogs and their orgin, habitat, and general care. Some info on vivariums and breeding but mostly a good dart frog picture book and generalized info book for beginners.

                          Book Description

This is the first volume of a projected commentary on the entire third book of Apollonius' Argonautica, one of the most influential and admired products of the Hellenistic era. The author sets out to deal comprehensively with all important aspects of the work; in particular, proper attention is paid for the first time to the poet's constant manipulation of the two Homeric epics; many thorny problems of text and interpretation are examined afresh; and a wealth of hitherto unadduced illustrative material drawn from Greek and Roman poetry of various genres and periods is used to shed light on a number of issues. The volume closes with a series of detailed digestive indexes dealing with diction, models and imitations, language and style, metre, transmission, mythology, religion, geography, ethnography and aetiology.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2007-08-01

My boyfriend has a pole in his house and challenged me to learn how to use it. So I ventured out to do some research and stumbled across this book. When it came, I watched the DVD first and was actually impressed! After watching the DVD, I read the book and it was awesome!

She not only talks about exotic and pole dancing techniques, but she also provides tips like how to wear your make-up, how to do your hair, what type of shoes to wear, and even trimming up the bikini line (VERRRRRY IMPORTANT)! She makes you feel comfy with your body since all of us aren't shaped like the poles we are learning to dance with.

All in all, I was thoroughly pleased with this book and I would definitely recommend it if you're just starting out and need some basic techniques and a little guidance!

2 out of 5 stars Ok for the curious.......2007-06-16

Book and vidoe are ok. I have since purchased videos adn books which are much better.
Effective at showing the moves although the presenter looks a bit clumsy and not that sexy.
Felt it was a bit cheesy - the dance names, which other videos and books are pretty much consistent this one renames with "student and friend's" names.
Book is ok- for beginners and those just wanting to maybe use it for spice. For more professionally done woudl recommend Fawnia, or Edith Aboul-Hosn videos.

5 out of 5 stars Great explanations, lots of variety... and lots of fun!.......2007-05-14

Wow, this book is a steal for $20. You get a well-written, thoroughly entertaining and funny book loaded with creative ideas, suggestions and advice- plus a DVD with examples of what you see in the book. It's a great deal. Not to mention the author really knows her stuff.

I love her comfortable approach, helping reduce anxiety over dancing "dirty," etc. As a former stripper, I find that many many women want to learn how to strip/lapdance/pole dance but are afraid of the social consequences, so I adore her reassurance throughout: this is fun, this is good exercise, this is for you and let no one make you feel any shame about being a sexy goddess. Amen, sister. Also emphasizes imperfect bodies and how to make your "imperfections" work to your advantage and learn to embrace them. Required reading for all shy violets and anyone who has ever said, "I'm too ___ to be a sexy dancer/stripper/etc."

Very highly recommended if you don't have a pole, if you just want some sexy moves to impress your partner or just look hot in front of your mirror at home. Also recommended if you have just invested in a pole and want a place to start that's basic and yet, provides room to grow. A masterpiece, a bargain.

4 out of 5 stars pole dancing how to's.......2007-05-06

I like most of the tricks that this dancer does but it is way too dancey for me and she tends to talk down to the audience. She does do a good job of illustrating how to do the tricks though! I really prefer the S Factor version of pole dancing but there are no DVD's of hers that show any inverted or the more complex pole tricks. This DVD does show them. For that reason I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book and D.V.D. on Stripping.......2007-03-20

I have purchased more than a few D.V.D.'s on stripping(books as well) and I have to say this is by far the best I've seen.
Stripping, lapdancing, polework and even (So Awesome!!!)chair dancing!!! The chairdancing and lapdancing instructions are worth the price of the book alone:)
There is really so much info, ideas and tips it will keep you inspired for years. At least!
The instruction in book and D.V.D. are very clear. You know exactly how to perform each move. No geussing.
Also,on my stupid moves meter from 0 to 10 this rates 0. Everything is very useable and sexy.
I've purchased at least 2 d.v.d.'s which scored high on the stupid moves meter and I really wished I hadn't purchased 'em.
This along with the S Factor book and d.v.d.'s are the only ones you will need. Lots of stuff to play with.
Anyway, Love this book/d.v.d. I would highly recommend.

I loved this book. Although I would prefer to have an instructor teach me, I live in a remote area and I don't think these classes will ever make it out my way! =(
I already have the video (same name/class/etc...) and it's really great. The book reinforced what I learned in the video and had all sorts of motivational information and tips. I just thought it was top drawer!
The colors are beautiful, the pictures are too...it was just a real "girl" book!

Maxi's book is a quick read about her day to day life on the road as an exotic feature dancer. She gives information about clubs and owners and her personal ups and downs. The first few pages of the book briefly covers the history of erotic dance. Following this part, is a section on exotic dance terms, stage names, different types of club dancers and customers. The bulk of the book tells about her day to day life as a dancer. (Also included are some black and white, non-nude, grainy pictures of Maxi.) This is not an instructional book about erotic dancing or a "how to" book, but if you're interested in knowing more about the life of a feature dancer then this is the book for you.

How anyone could not find this book an A+ is beyond me. First of all the main focus is to be an true entertainer and not some stripper. The author fights for the dancers and calls them "Dancerettes" not strippers! This book made me money, yes, money. Do people think that we should entertain and dance for free. I don't think so. I am a professional dancer and I love this book. This book is not a book on gold digging it is a book how to become the classiest exotic dancer. I would say that people should read it and actually read it, some get stuck on the fact that the author is stunning and glance only on the pictures. Use it and you will be a class act. My hubby cannot believe how much better I dance and keep my customers happy. I have learned from this book that I am a professional dancer with no shame. I also have tremendous amount of repeat customers. PS: For the spelling error in the book, you should blame the editor not the author. Keep on dancing girls and have fun. I give it a high five. I have never been in a strip club, but was curious to find out what goes on in there.

This book in really cute. It is written by a woman from Croatia whose husband left her for a stripper. So, at the age of 32, she went into a strip club to find out what it's like. And so her journey begins.

Her story is straight from the heart. The spelling errors only add to the charm.

I would recommend it for women who want to find out what happens in strip clubs, or for men who want to look at sexy pictures.

Whatever it is, this book is one of a kind.

My review comes from a different perspective. I am a pro-dancer that got burnt out on the business. I bought this book as couple dancers told me about it. Unfortunetly one naysayer dancer almost convinced me not to buy it, claiming she could of done better. Dancers are interesting., very competitive! I did like this read and am very glad I don't listen to envious girls. If you need a pick me up and or want to know how to be the best among the competition in any club, then buy it. If you are the envious type don't. More knowlage and money for me :)Trish

I believe this is a wonderful book and it has been a tremendous help in my line of work as a dancer. The book is beautiful and it provides everything you want to know about the true biz of dancing. I read it often just to remind myself that I am an actress and not just a stripper. Great info on how to be a pro and not a hussler, also love the pix. It is inspiring and down right uplifting. From a dancer of 10 yrs in showbiz.

2 out of 5 stars Obviously, English is not her native language..........2007-01-13

It's clearly obvious to me (precisely BECAUSE of the horrible spelling and grammar) that English must not be Jewels' native language.

Hence, if she is not American-born, or perhaps was raised in an otherwise ethnically different home, then it naturally follows that she will have some difficulties with both the English language and the American culture.

Of course, better editing would have helped the book immensely.

Some examples of this spelling/grammer issue are things like this: She speaks of herself and her previous husband parting on "applicable terms". Obviously she must have meant "amicable terms".

Another example: She speaks of somebody interrupting her... she uses the word "interpret" instead.

I am finding it a (little) bit easier to read the book if I keep in mind that the author must be of a different ethnicity, and this probably and most likely explains why she delves into details of things that are most obvious to other people (such as leg shaving, using candles, etc.)

Will post more thoughts on this book as I continue reading...

1 out of 5 stars Very demeaning to the profession and poorly written.......2006-07-04

As a person who frequents strip bars, I can tell you that Jewels is painting a glamorous-fairytale picture of a strippers life in her book. The book is poorly written, with bad grammer and Jewels jumps from subject to subject and copies the liquor/bar regulations straight from the Arizona's State law books!(how creative).

Jewels greatest tip of advise from her professional stripper capacity is(light a candle to set the mood and shave your legs in a downward motion)

I can honestly say this book is not worth the paper it is printed on. As I read it, I kept thinking, this has got to be a joke!

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous book, not worth the time.......2006-06-05

I started reading this book and could barely get through the fist chapter. I skimmed through it and found it to be a stupid book written by an illerate stripper who only boasts and brags about how much money she made while rubbing her privates on strangers.

I paid way too much money for this joke!. Not recommended, not even to my worst enemy!

1 out of 5 stars Complete trash printed on expensive paper.......2004-11-02

From star to finish, this book is a complete joke!. This book which was written by an ameteur starts off with Jewels talking about her childhood, accomplishments, and goes into a dedication that goes on and on and on and on!. Then she writes about the clothing worn by Exotic dancers, their preference in dance music, how much to tip the bouncer, and the boring facts about Bar rules.
Jewels then writes an entire chapter on why a woman should be proud to be a stripper(expensive toys for your kids, lots of clothes, different men, etc). Towards the end of the book, Jewels goes out of her way to make taking a bath sound like a ritual done only by the sexiest most seductive women in the world, not the common everyday lady.
I am a stripper and I'm always looking for tools to better my performances, but Jewels only wasted my time and money with this ridiculous book, I guess I shouldn't complain too much since it will make good fireplace material.
Ladies, there are lots of informative books and videos out there. Here on amazon, you'll be able to find plenty good books, not like this one. I only wish I had read the reviews about this book before I purchased it.

                          1 out of 5 stars not really a guidebook.......2004-08-29

I bought this book a couple years ago, but am only reviewing it now because I do want to point out two pluses in this book.

Jewels' main point in writing this book seems to be an attempt to defend her life choices and the life choices of her colleagues, with whom she has an affectionate, supportive view. She wants to encourage all women to better themselves. There is nothing wrong with this motive. But she does this by trying to paint the job of stripping as more esoteric and spiritual than it is. I refer to myself as a stripper. Anything else is just a useless euphuism.

However noble her intentions are, all of her history and personal musings do not belong in a guidebook. A chapter or two at the most should be devoted to these topics and then left alone. As an English major I found the book irritating because of the obvious lack of an editor. As a former stripper I found the book irritating because it did not really go into the detail needed to teach less experienced strippers the tricks of the trade. There are many things to learn, some of which are important for personal safety, some of which are important for maximizing earnings potential. She rarely covers much of anything that cannot be easily figured out.

There are two good points in this book that I liked. First, I did like her ideas for fantasy dance routines (Chapters 10 and 11). For house girls interested in trying to do feature routines, she made some easy suggestions that would work well without a lot of financial investment. A dancer doesn't have to follow these routines to the letter, but they offer a good basic foundation to work with. Yes, I have seen other books with much better suggestions, but the step-by-step routines are a much-needed plus for this book.

The second thing I liked was in Chapter 4, the strange questionnaire chapter. Again, this could have been arranged differently with better effect. I like questions #18-21 where she discusses her method of financial goal-making, breaking it down from monthly to weekly to daily to hourly. She discusses this concept more in the book, but I don't remember where. As a goal-oriented person myself, I found that by setting an hourly goal of dances each night really did help me keep on track so I was able to reach my monetary goals a lot easier. This will not work for every personality, but it was a good tip. It was not something I had thought of before.

Her tips on dancing itself are nearly useless. There are other books that do better. Any description of a physical activity is hard to do, especially dance. Dance lessons are best learned in person or through a well-made video. She never takes into account the actual beat of the music, which is so important to dancing well. This section should've been greatly modified or simply left out. A discussion of good dance music would have been more effective.

This was not the guidebook I was expecting when I bought it. I am glad that she had the wherewithal to get this book published, but I wish she had been better able to explain how to work successfully in a club after 10 years. Her disruptive personal life just overshadowed the book and instead of making her seem human, just made her seem like a flake. There are better stripper books out there, and there are worse as well. I am giving this one star due to the very poor English, the meandering thoughts, the glaring lack of solid "how-to" material and the poor representation of a profession that I know well.
