Simple?.......2000-05-12

I didn't find it all that simple for my kids to read. Some expressions are definitely English. I don't appreciate the comic style much, but I do like the large print at the bottom of each page. Guess there's something for both sides of that issue! Typical Usborne illustrations.

Not the best book on crested geckos.......2006-12-03

If you really want the scoop on crested geckos, this is not the book. The basic information on husbandry is pretty good, but there is some misinformation here as well. In the section on feeding, the author states that there is no complete commercial diet for this species--not true: there is an excellent meal replacement powder sold by T-Rex that is nutritionally complete and eliminates the need to feed live insects. It was developed by Allen Repashy, the largest breeder of crested geckos in the country, and widely used by hobbyists. The best book on crested geckos I've encountered is "Rhacodactylus: The Complete Guide to their Selection and Care" by Philippe De Vosjoli, Allen Repashy, and Frank Fast. That is the book that will reliably answer all your questions about this and similar species.

A less than mediocre book.......2005-04-24

This book is a huge waste of time and poorly written to boot!
The author restates herself far too much due to lack of content.
One could easily find far better information on this species by searching the internet. The pictures are the only good part of this book.

Pretty decent overview.......2005-02-06

I give this slim book 3 stars, not because there's anything wrong with the book per se, but because it is quite a broad and basic overview, and a more detailed book might be what you're looking for. If you are a beginning hobbyist, this book will provide the groundwork and basics for pet ownership of a Crested Gecko. However, someone looking for more detailed specifics, will need to pick up a more comprehensive volume. This book is 69 pgs long, inc. bibliography, so each chapter is about 6 pgs long - large print, with lots of large photos and the pages being about 5.5" x 8.5" - so not a lot of text. The text that is here is good, clearly written, and helpful. I just wish the feeding section was longer, and the Health and Diseases chapter is 7 1/3 pgs long - but with section breaks, photos and large font headers, it's precious little info. A section on Crested Gecko behavior would have been nice too. The sections on housing, diet, breeding, are pretty good overviews. Certainly enough for a beginner, but if you're going to seriously get into Cresties in a big way, in breeding, raising, etc. PLEASE get other books. For a beginner, I would recommend this book. I also must say, the photos are excellent. Lots of great full color pics of just about every type of color/pattern of Crestie, and good photos of housing set-ups, nests, etc. So, in summation - very nice beginner's book, but may leave you wanting a lot more depth of topics.

Katherine Liepe-Levinson has spent three years researching heterosexual female and male striptease in North America. The result of this research is Strip Show: Performances of Gender and Desire: the first full length theoretically informed study of striptease.
Liepe-Levinsons's travels took her to over seventy different strip bars, clubs, theatres and sex emporiums ranging from elaborate lap-dancing and couch-dancing 'gentlemen's' clubs in New York, Houston, and San Francisco; to Peoria's unisex cabaret where women strip for men downstairs, and men for women upstairs; to nightclubs in Montreal. The book is based on interviews with participants as well as Liepe-Levinsons's own analyses of these events.
The focus of the study is on the theatrical elements of striptease shows including choreography, costumes, and design. But a variety of methodologies are drawn upon to review long standing and new theories about representations of gender, heterosexuality, and erotic desire, and to discover why it is that striptease continues to provoke and fascinate.

Informative yet Repetitive.......2005-12-22

This book had a lot of interesting content and would be recommended (though not highly...) for those who are interested in the gender roles involved in strip shows. It's analysis of the separate components of the strip show (a chapter each for physical location of the venues, interior decorating, clothing of the dancers, dance moves, audience involvement) offers something that other books covering the same topic don't touch on. However, a lot of the book gets repetitive. Don't waste your time reading the introduction of the book: it is echoed (and sometimes even copied exactly) in other parts of the book.

The fascinating worlds of male and female strip shows.......2002-01-02

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the intriguing worlds of male and female strip shows as well as about the complexities of sexual desire. Among the topics it covers are: How strip shows simultaneously uphold and break traditional sex roles; the symbiotic relationship between performers and spectators; why New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was incorrect in his assessment that strip shows, by their very nature, produce negative secondary effects; and why strip shows allow both men and women the freedom to explore roles denied to them by traditional society.
Through logically reasoned arguments, careful field work, and fascinating examples, the book's author makes a solid case that there a lot more to strip shows than mere titillation and the removal of clothing.

Great read!.......2007-08-27

I've heard of this book before, I just never got around to reading it. I didn't like all the trendy stuff going on about Egypt a while back, so I thought this was just another book trying to capitalise on that. Anyhow, now that I finally decided to read this book (I am a bit more than halfway through it), I must say it's quite impressive. Even if you don't believe anything "Omm Sety" recounts, it doesn't seem to matter; she is so remarkable in many ways that it's impossible to forget her. I personally believe in what she says, and I believe some people just have more interesting and magnetic personalities than others, not due to what we commonly mistake as "charm" or charisma, but more like an utter force of personality, a certain distinction that marks someone as being very different than others who are conventional. In many ways, Omm Sety is a genius of sorts -- truly a woman ahead of her time. I really would recommend this book to anyone who loves the mystical, the occult or the unknown, or Egypt. It's a great read.

Delightful stories of ethnic life long ago.......2002-05-02

Ann Walko is in her 90's and writes stories from her childhood growing up with immigrant parents in western Pennsylvania. The memories take place in the period just before, during and after the First World War. Her family came from the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. She calls them "Pod Karpacki Rus", but they are now known as Ruthenians, or Rusyns. The stories are told from a child's point of view. We see things as young Ann sees them growing up in a house full of male boarders who were all born and raised in a far off land. The stories show how she changes as she goes to school with native-born Americans and quickly becomes more adjusted to life in this country than her parents' generation. As the book progresses her pride in her family becomes mixed with embarrassment at their language and behavior. Rusyn phrases are scattered throughout the book, and at the end of the book there are eleven pages of Rusyn recipes. This is a delightful book that will be enjoyed by anyone whose grandparents or great-grandparents came from the Carpathian Mountains. It will also be of interest to people studying the social life and customs of immigrant communities in the early 20th century.

This memoir, written by a 91 year-old woman who grew up in an extended family of Carpatho Rusyn immigrants living in Pittsburg, is a warm and readable story. For those who share a common Carpatho Rusyn culture, for those who experienced the richness of living with other American immigrant groups, and for those who missed the experience altogether, this book can take you back to another place and time where you can taste the food (there are recipes at the end of the book), hear the music, and touch the fabric of a world that is now just a memory.
