Invaluable Advice!.......2007-04-26
This book is indeed a godsend for parents. Although it's geared to Western Europe, over half the book focuses on universal tips that would also be helpful in Turkey or Transylvania, such as how to get kids to try different foods or appreciate museums. I loved this book, and found the author's advice invaluable when I took my two daughters to Europe.
Take Your Kids to Europe.......2007-01-08
We live in London, and travel every chance we have. This book provides great ideas for structuring trips and helping children enjoy the sights and experiences. It's a good companion for families planning European vacations. I am very glad to have this information and always review it before we travel.
Great ideas and advice.......2006-11-11
This book has great ideas on dealing with budgets, luggage, etc. I especially like that they were keen on the idea of an 'extended' stay in Europe e.g., several weeks, and provided some sound examples of how it really doesn't cost much more to do that if you're willing to be flexible with accomodations & meals.
I lived in Europe for several pre-teen and teenage years, and we travelled widely. At the time I was always amazed at the number of people who take these "8 countries in 2 weeks" style tour packages -- the pace is so hectic there's no time to enjoy or experience the places, and they are wholly unsuitable for children.
The book is also good at pointing out attractions that would appeal to kids, which is helpful since most guidebooks focus on the 'serious' sites that kids would find less appealing.
Genuinely "all-family" must-have guidebook.......2006-06-02
The payoff for reading Cynthia Harriman's "Take Your Kids to Europe" carefully is tremendous. We have a five-week trip to Europe coming up and our copy if already getting dog-eared from overreading. This guidebook is different and better. Most "what to do with the kids overseas" books are filled with things you already instinctively knew - i.e. your kid will like Legoland and here is how to get there and the hours it's open. Harriman's guide acknowledges there is more to a successful family trip than just picking the right things to see, and she uses the reactions of her own actual kids to back up her suggestions. For example, she is a master of managing family dynamics on a trip. Here are a few of her suggestions:
1) Everybody wants to do something different, and nobody likes to compromise. It's just about impossible to agree, so Harriman suggests a "leader of the day" system - each member of the family gets a day or part of a day to pick what the "team" will do, where it will eat. Everybody gets to do some of their favorites eventually. This takes some self-discipline on the part of the parents - if the kids want to spend the morning by the pool, you'll have to agree - but you'll get to see that church you want to see in the afternoon.
2) You are looking for family togetherness but in fact that much togetherness can be stressful. For example, your teenager is all about independence. Go ahead and let said teenager hang out alone in the hotel room for an afternoon if that's what she needs. You and your spouse will argue about giving directions; Harriman encourages you to loosen up and learn about each other.
3) Harriman has a lot of good suggestions about how to make a lengthy trip affordable, and gives good suggestions for budgeting in advance.
In additional to general advice, Harriman shows excellent good sense in sections on what attractions to see - she's frank about things the kids were underwhelmed by (most chateaus just aren't as interesting as you'd think to a 9-year-old), and points out things that are actually more fun than they would sound on paper. So rather than 50 kid-oriented attractions in a country (like other books), all presented with equal breathless interest, she might have 20 - 15 her kids really liked (and why), and 5 they didn't like.
Harriman does not recommend many specific hotels and restaurants (there are other sources for those), so you may find you supplement this book with others. But you can't do without this one - I really love it.

Book Description
60s Americana galore!
With the consumerist euphoria of the fifties still going strong and the race to the moon at its height, the mood of advertising in the sixties was cheerful, optimistic, and at times, revolutionary. The decade's ads touted perceived progress (such as tang and instant omelets-"just add water") while striving to reinforce good old American values.
Stars like Sean Connery, Woody Allen, Salvador Dalí, and Sammy Davis Jr. endorsed everything from bourbon to handmade suits in an attempt by Madison Avenue to urge Americans to open their wallets and participate in one giant consumer binge. Social change at the end of the era brought psychedelic swirls and liberated women and minorities to a newly conscious public. Keep an eye out for some of the more surprising and controversial ads-such as Tupperware billing its storage container as a "wifesaver."
From forgotten cars such as the Dodge Dart, to cigarettes ("This Christmas give cartons of Luckies") to food (mmm! TV dinners!) and much more, this colorful collection of print ads explores the wide, wonderful world of 60s Americana.

did we really dress like this?!.......2005-03-27
what an incredible look into the not-so-distant past! ads always show an airbrushed version of reality, and it's funny to see 60s products like polaroid cameras and nehru suits presented as if they were the cat's pyjamas. a great gift book for any graphic designers or advertising-types on your list.
Time travel back to the 60's!.......2004-12-16
This is an excellent way to take a trip back to the 60's and some of the culture of that time. Look at those cars! How about that Maidenform Bra ad! How about those fashions and hairstyles! If you want to learn or remember some of what was popular then this is an excellent, thoroughly enjoyable way to do it!
These books are a great resource, with limitations.......2004-11-12
These books are a great resource and provide hours of enjoyable reading. My graphic designer keeps borrowing them for reference. When I was a kid, I used to love going through the old copies of TIME and NEWSWEEK...just to read the ads! I think they provide more insight into popular culture than articles.
There are some limitations. The source of materials seems to be from particular magazines, and perhaps some manufacturers did not consent to some ads. For example, in the Consumer Products section, there are ads galore for the SEARS bicycles, but NONE for the Schwinn "Sting Ray" - certainly the icon of mid-60's bicycling. Similarly, the car ads appear to favor big Cadilliacs and some offbeat marques. Perhaps the Euro-centric view of things colors (colours?) this.
Also, there is a certain amount of mockery in the book. Each section features a "winner" advertisment, which is often derided for its naievity or for its promotion of racial stereotypes, overconsumption, etc.
But, while our European friends may be laughing at us, it is clear that they lavish attention upon our degenerate culture - four volume's worth!
My only other suggestion is get a magnifying glass. Many ads are reproduced in quarter-page size and are hard to read. Many more are oddly cropped at the edges. While all four books are great, the 50's and 60's may be the best nostalga trip for many - and an interesting commentary on the evolution of popular culture during that time.
I agree with the other reviews, but . . . .......2004-09-01
being a car fan, I know about car ads from the 1960s. I have two major gripes:
1) They did not get the cars right. For example, often they would call a car a '66 when it was a '67, no doubt because the ad probably appeared in October 1966. Still, it would help to get it right.
2) One of the most interesting aspect of the 1960s was the psychedelication of American popular culture, and automobiles reflected this, exemplified best by the musclecars of the late 1960s. What about Dodge's "Scat Pack - the cars with the bumblebee stripes!"? Or Plymouth's Road Runner and the ad where the car looks like it's breathing? AMC's Big Bad colors? Pontiac's "The Judge can be bought"?
So some of you may be thinking, "Oh, what a geek!" but I wonder what else they could have gotten "more" right if they had actually did more research since they, I presume, aren't American.
Space Age meets the Hippie.......2004-03-01
Wow! was my first reaction upon devouring these heavy, nearly one thousand, slick pages of incredibly square, hip, liberal, conservative, and completely cool advertising. Some of the fashions, hairstyles, designs, attitudes, and language that you'll encounter will make you laugh, cry, deeply ponder, and wonder how the world could have changed so much since that era.
The book begins with a couple of pages of commentary by the author explaining the power of advertising and consumer consumption in the 1960s. If someone doesn't read English, then he can read it in 4 other languages - German, French, Spanish, and an Asian language (not Chinese, but possibly Japanese or Korean).
Most of the ads are in color, though a few are in their original black-and-white design. The ads are divided into nine categories, starting with the early part of the decade, progressing to the end. There are approximately 60 pages on alcohol and tobacco, 160 pages on automobiles, 100 on business and industry, 160 pages on consumer products, 50 pages on entertainment, 150 pages on fashion and beauty, 100 pages on food and beverage, 60 pages on furniture and appliances, and 50 pages on the travel industry. Thus, the book is not geared towards men or women or any age group.
Inside, you'll find the one-and-only Groucho Marx declaring, "If you don't serve Smirnoff (vodka)....hide the label!"
For those who think that foreign imports are just little toys, an ad for the 1966 Dodge Dart proclaims, "Join the Dodge Rebellion. Stamp out cramped compacts. Up with man-sized Dodge Dart."
One of the more surprising ads was for Motorola television in 1962. About a dozen nude, smiling people (you can't see private parts) are outside in a meadow, all gathered around a tiny television set displaying the face of a little boy.
In 1965, the Hoover company shows a smiling man in a neat little shirt and tie with thick black glasses and a crewcut surrounded by a mop, dustpan, and other household goods. The ad declares, "Chances are you won't marry a guy who cooks, cleans, irons, scrubs, and sweeps." The next picture shows several vacuum cleaners and other household products and says, "We've thought about that."
"How come all non-conformists look alike?" In 1969, with a picture of a Janis Joplin look-alike, Simplicity states, "Sew your own thing."
"When your TV screen goes black for an hour, you're watching ABC," the company's ad says in 1969. "Because ABC is five major television stations that are the leaders in community-minded broadcasting. Each one, for instance, is currently involved in programming exclusively for black people. On San Francisco's KGO-TV, it's `Black Dignity,' an hour program every Sunday. Originated and produced by black people. For black people."
To appeal to the teenage mod community, who apparently were threatening to consume mass quantities of diet colas, the sugar industry began telling us that we need more sugar in our lives. In 1966, we see a girl with a slightly thick midriff in a bikini on a surfboard with the caption, "Lisa needs a sugarless, energy-less soft drink like a kangaroo needs a baby buggy. Lisa's strictly the go-go type. After sunning, shopping, afternoon tennis date, and discothèquing into the wee hours, she's up first thing to catch the early morning surf. What keeps Lisa from washing out? Energy...And sugar's got it. That's right, sugar. Everything in it is go. Note to people on the go: Exhaustion may be dangerous. It can even rob you of your resistance to illness. But sugar helps offset exhaustion - puts back energy fast. Synthetic sweeteners put back nothing. So play safe - make sure you get sugar every day. People need what sugar's got.....18 calories per teaspoon....and it's all energy."
That's all I needed to hear. I'm off to energize my life with some Krispy Kreme donuts. For my health, you know.

Nothing of great social importance, simple messages for what was clearly a simpler time.......2007-06-30
Nostalgia is a part of the human experience, yet the reality is that the "good old days" never really were exactly what they are remembered to be. This book contains a simple look back at some of the classic print advertisements of the 1960's. Most of the ads represent alcohol and tobacco, cars, furniture, travel and leisure. Very few illustrate items such as diapers, food, everyday clothing or other basic consumer products.
While most of the ads are from the early sixties, representing a more sedate and predictable time, there are a few that demonstrate the growing counterculture movement of the late sixties. They are generally confined to ads for records and movies, which makes sense. There is nothing of great social importance in this book, although it does give a series of snapshots into how the advertising industry tried to present the world to the consumer market of the times.
If you like the All-American Ads series, be warned!.......2007-04-11
I'm a big fan of Taschen's hefty All-American Ads "Midi" series, so I ordered both the "Golden Age of Advertising" and "Icons" editions of 60's ads... unfortunately, I didn't conduct any research beyond Amazon's non-description of these two books, and I was disappointed to discover that they basically contain the same ads, albeit in abbreviated forms. The "Midi" book, a nearly unwieldy behemoth that retails for about $40, is the most comprehensive of the three, and perhaps the best choice for consumer culture enthusiasts-- spending twenty or thirty minutes browsing through its pages can be a somewhat dizzying affair. The "Golden Age of Advertising" edition is much more affordable, features the best and funniest of the ads, and is hardback, making it perhaps the best choice for the majority of buyers. The "Icons" edition, however, is sadly skimpy and (though the cheapest) clearly the inferior option of the three. However, the continual availability of all three editions is unlikely, and if the time comes that the "Icons" edition is the last available specimen, I would still recommend it to anyone with an interest in 60's material culture.

Odd calendar planning.......2004-01-25
I have the same problem with this calendar that the other reviewer noted -- it runs Monday through Sunday instead of Sunday through Saturday. If the calendar is printed for 2005 I hope this problem will be remedied.
Great photos, but..........2003-12-31
tremendously annoying because each week starts with Monday on the far left of the calendar and Sunday on the right. In other words, it goes against every other calendar you own. A disappointment.

Ferrets, Rabbits and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery (Ferrets, Rabbits & Rodents)
ASIN: 0702028274 |
Book Description
Ferret Husbandry, Medicine and Surgery is a must-have for the small animal practitioner and those interested in ferrets in general. It aims to inform on all aspects and conditions relating to the domestic ferret. Edited and authored by one of the eminent authorities on ferrets in the world, John Lewington, for this new edition is joined by contributions - including both new text and illustrations - from ferret experts based in 8 different countries, including the UK, US, Australia, Japan and Russia, thus ensuring the most current and complete information is available on this increasingly popular animal. Fully updated and with full colour throughout, this second edition now has 5 new chapters: gastroenteric/liver diseases; ferret-polecat domestication and genetics; ferret dentistry and pathology; ferret toxicosis; and ferret ultrasonography, covering new radiology and ultrasound techniques.
Customer Reviews:
Great Vet Gift.......2003-02-26
I purchased this book for my vet, since he doesn't see a lot of whole ferrets, and it addresses a lot of breeding health issues.
He is delighted with it, and that in turn makes me very happy. Great chapter on V-hob surgery!
Review from a Ferret Breeder's Point of View.......2001-04-10
This is a very informative and easy to read book even for beginning ferret owner. It presents a interesting viewpoint of ferret husbandry from a "working ferret" prospective. Many of the health problems, in particular - parasite infestation, facing a "working ferret" are not an issue in the United States. But luckily Austrialia does not have the health problems related to ECE. Neither do they have the Adrenal disease problem that the US has because of so many early spays/neuters sold by the LARGE ferret farms. Another reason to go to a private breeder for a healthier pet.
The different drawings on "ferret" environments are interesting with their pond and burrough landscaping. Much of which would not be practical in the US. The average ferret owner/breeder in the US would be much more concerned about their ferrets excellent ability to find a "wayout" and therefore loosing their much loved pet.
All in all, I would highly recommend this book to anyone breeding ferrets, running a rescue/shelter and even to the average pet owner who wants to learn more about their valued pets.

Great book, very informative!.......2006-07-22
One of the things I like best about this book is that for every perennial listed, it shows at least 3 different photographs so you can see exactly what the plant looks like. So often in seed/plant catalogues you only see a close-up of the blooms and have no idea what the rest of the plant will look like.
I'm still in my first year of gardening, and found this book to be an exhaustive, easy-to-read resource both informative and fun to page through.
Want to buy just one book on Ohio perennials this is it!.......2005-04-08
The very best book I've seen on perennials for our area! Nice size book, not too big, but covers the most important info well. Good photos of varities, most labelled. Great additional charts that I've been looking for: Perinnials for Clay Soil, Perennials for Exposed Locations, Perinnials for Planters... There is also a complete chapter on Propagating Perennials with charts on which to plant best from seed, or basal cuttings, or root cuttings. Back of book has Gardens to Visit, very good quick reference chart, and index.
I hope to purchase the companion books for Annuals, and Shrubs and Trees, soon.
Got one, could not wait for mail........2003-04-24
I have been looking for a book like this. Me and my wife Bee have been trying to plant flowers, but often get stuff that will not grow in our area. Then Bee makes me sleep in the shed.

Library Journal praised this edition of Sherwood Anderson's famed short stories as "the finest edition of this seminal work available." Reconstructed to be as close to the original text as possible, Winesburg, Ohio depicts the strange, secret lives of the inhabitants of a small town. In "Hands," Wing Biddlebaum tries to hide the tale of his banishment from a Pennsylvania town, a tale represented by his hands. In "Adventure," lonely Alice Hindman impulsively walks naked into the night rain. Threaded through the stories is the viewpoint of George Willard, the young newspaper reporter who, like his creator, stands witness to the dark and despairing dealings of a community of isolated people.
Book Description
'Here [is] a new order of short story,' said H. L. Mencken when Winesburg, Ohio was published in 1919. 'It is so vivid, so full of insight, so shiningly life-like and glowing, that the book is lifted into a category all its own.' Indeed, Sherwood Anderson's timeless cycle of loosely connected tales--in which a young reporter named George Willard probes the hopes, dreams, and fears of the solitary people in a small Midwestern town at the turn of the century--embraced a new frankness and realism that ushered American literature into the modern age. 'There are moments in American life to which Anderson gave not only the first but the final expression,' wrote Malcolm Cowley. 'Winesburg, Ohio is far from the pessimistic or morbidly sexual work it was once attacked for being. Instead it is a work of love, an attempt to break down the walls of loneliness, and, in its own fashion, a celebration of small-town life in the lost days of good will and innocence.'

Book Description
Ballet dancers have the strongest, most beautiful, probably the most envied bodies in the world. How do they stay slender and willowy while maintaining the extraordinary energy it takes to perform night after night? Can a nondancer or an amateur attain a dancer's figure and a dancer's vitality? And keep it?
Here, in The Dancers' Body Book, the legendary ballerina Allegra Kent discloses the health, weight-watching, and relaxation secrets of some of the world's greatest ballet dancers -- from Suzanne Farrell and Fernando Bujones to Darci Kistler and Madame Alexandra Danilova. Combining them with two well-balanced diets -- one to lose weight by and one to live by -- and an exercise regimen that can be tailored to the individual, she provides a fabulous fitness program for everyone who longs to be slimmer, healthier, and more energetic.
Fourteen varied menus incorporate delicious recipes from the dancers themselves (such as Jacques D'Amboise's Wonderful Dinner Salad and Dierdre Carberry's Almond Meringue Kisses), along with calorie guides and advice on how to create additional menus using your own favorite dishes. Helpful discussions on sports and exercise systems -- ranging from jogging and swimming to the sophisticated "Pilates" workout -- are also included, and in a special chapter entitled "A Healthy Outlook," the dancers talk candidly on such issues as smoking, anorexia, vitamins, doctors, massage, junk foods, fad diets, and injuries.
Dancers take meticulous care of all their equipment because training and performance depend on it. Of course, the most essential piece of equipment, the body, needs the most care of all, and that is what this book is about: how to take care of the world's greatest machine.
Allegra Kent joined the New York City Ballet at the age of fifteen and was a principal dancer with the company for thirty years, during which time she created a number of starring roles in ballets by Balanchine and Robbins. The mother of two daughters and a son, she is also the author of Allegra Kent's Water Beauty Book.
Customer Reviews:
Very accurate, a great tool for any dancer.......2007-09-28
I must say I had my doubts, but after reading this book, I am very pleased. The book provides effective guidelines for a dancer. As a dancer, eating disorders are unfortunately still an issue in ballet (maybe other dance too). This book, however, gives a safe plan to incorporate into life. I wish I had bought it when I was 10 yrs old! Of course it is geared more towards actual dancers, not just people who take dance classes a few times a week. But, I think most people will be able to use the guidelines and adjust things to fit their own lifestyles.
Outdated.......2007-01-28
This book is pretty outdated and was not written for those of us living in the 21st century. Some of it still applies, but I just find it to be something of the past. Why don't people just go to a nutritionist and follow their simple rules? For example, no white at night (e.g. breads, pastas, etc.) or that the biggest meal of the day should be breakfast or lunch. One can eat well and eat more filling foods and still stay lean and slender.
A Fun Read But I Have Other Recommendations........2006-01-06
For a more scientific approach, purchase "Diet for Dancers" by Chmelar and Fitt. To eat like a ballerina (light & healthy), buy Linda Hymes' "The Dancing Gourmet". These two books together are all you need.
Great book to help you develop anorexia.......2005-02-24
This book should be avoided by young people. My sister was given this book by her teacher and still has problems with anorexia....
read this book with caution.......2004-01-17
I have read this book several times, and as a dancer, it actually encourages me NOT to follow the outrageous diet plans of the dancers featured in the book. Admittedly, i can relate to the desperate measures that these people will take to lose weight perhaps temporarily, for a certain ballet or an important audition. However, these are not measures that I am proud of, and frankly I find it disturbing that Ms. Kent feels free to encourage extreme behavior, especially in young people (and ESPECIALLY young dancers!) The active lifestyle of a dancer needs to be supplemented by proper nutrition; the mere mention of Susan Jaffe's summer of drinking "a lot of iced tea" to help acquire her job with American Ballet Theatre is dangerous information for aspiring, developing young girls to have their hands on. We can only hope that anyone reading this book for the first time will take it with a grain of salt, considering it was written nearly twenty years ago.
Customer Reviews:
This book makes you think, "What is Truth".......1999-09-20
Before you begin reading this book you need to read First & Second Thunder by MSI or you will not be able to fully understand the spiritual message contained within the pages of this book. This book will open your heart and soul to a new level of understanding on your path to spiritual enlightenment.

Book Description
Shaka N'Zinga's powerful memoir reveals the personal and political transformation of an African American youth growing up in the urban poverty of Baltimore. The writing slips between present and past and between poetry and prose, gradually revealing the protagonist's shifts in consciousness. Incarcerated since age sixteen, the author's articles have been influential in prisoner support networks. The book joins such classics as Eldridge Cleaver's Soul on Ice and George Jackson's Soledad Brother.
