Customer Reviews:
okay but not very in depth.......2006-03-10
This book covers so much territory so quickly, i didn't find it useful for the amalfi coast. there it only covered a few main walks in main towns instead of getting very deep. the Sunflower Landscape series is much more thorough but doesn't have hotel recommendations.
All the details you'll ever need to walk in Italy.......2005-01-23
This book walked us through some great walks in northern Italy. It has all the details you may need. The track is described in a way you can't go wrong. They warn the reader about every possible obstacle, give exact transportaion schedule, recommend maps, seasons and walking gear.
The tracks vary in length and difficulty. The book mentions the length, duration, and difficulty of every walk, so the reader can stay with what suits them.
We even took their recommendation for a hotel, and it turned out to be a good recommendation. It was not fancy, but clean and pleasant, just as the book said.
(I refer to the hotel they recommend in Malcesina, on lake Garda).
All in all - I'm very glad to have bought this book. It brought our trip to a whole different level.
There is a lot of general information about each area. I found it verey interesting, and I think you should read the descriptions carefully before you start your walks.
Have fun!!
Molto Bene!.......2002-09-23
Seeing Italy in all its grand beauty is simply not enough by plane, train or vespa. NO my friend, you must get out and WALK. There is no better way to see the hidden wonders of this wonderful country, and Lonely planet is the only walking partner you need. Tips on the best walking tracks, great food, hidden splendors...they are all in this easy to carry wealth of a paperback. When your trip is over, you will not want to part ways with such a book. I often look over this book to conjure up memories of my trip. If your heading to Italy, get this book, I dont think there are any others that fare better in comparison to Lonely Planet.
Just the book for choosing a walk in wild Italy.......2001-05-10
The emphasis of this useful little handbook is on walking in rural, even wild Italy. It describes walks in nine areas: the western Alps, the Lake District, the Dolomites, Maritime Alps, Liguria, the southern Italian volcanoes, the Amalfi Coast & Sorrento Peninsula, Tuscany and Sardenia. Also, it describes four long-distance walks which traverse the length or, pretty nearly, the width of Italy.
Coverage of each geographic area is uneven, but it's always at least enough for a rapid overview. For example, Liguria gets just 13 pages. However, it has so many wonderful walks that it's worth a book of its own. The volcanoes of southern Italy get 40 pages. And that's just about right.
There are useful chapters about the housekeeping details of taking a walk in Italy. These cover how to get to Italy, finding transport to the site of each walk, health, safety and first aid tips, facts needed for planning a walk and those background details of Italy which may be important to a walker.
very useful book.......1999-04-01
Serious trekkers should add this invaluable guidebook to their travel shelves. In its rapidly growing walking guide series, Lonely Planet very effectively defines its audience and focus. Walking in Italy is aimed at travelers who want to include extensive hiking in their trips or those who plan long-distance trekking journeys. The authors have selected nine areas of walks and organized both regionally and thematically. Sections such as the "Volcanoes of Southern Italy" tempt readers to plan trips that will immerse them in the rich culture and natural history of the regions described.
My wife and I field-tested this guide on a recent trip to Southern Italy and greatly valued its level of detail. We found the maps and trail directions highly accurate and easy to follow, and we particularly appreciated the many sidebars on local culture, history, and the environment. Walk descriptions also include public transportation to trailheads, campgrounds, budget lodgings and restaurants, even local sources for maps and trail guides. The first quarter of this compact book, moreover, is devoted to general travel information, which just could make this single guide all the walker needs to carry on a trip to Italy.
Book Description
Each of the four books in this box set offers a different perspective of immigrating to the United States -- that of an Irish girl sent to work in the Lowell, Massachusetts mills; a Polish girl who comes to live in a western Pennsylvania mining town; a Jewish girl who moves to New York City with her family; and a Finnish boy who settles in Minnesota.
Book Description
Capt. Joshua Slocum's narrative describing his solo voyage around the world in the 37ft sloop SPRAY undoubtedly stands as one of the great sea classics of all time.
Download Description
Already a seasoned old salt when he undertook the challenge, Slocum became the first person to sail around the world alone. In 1895 he left Boston in the 37' "Spray", returning in 1898.
Customer Reviews:
Unbelievable story, a must read if there ever was one.......2007-09-11
This story is the greatest sailing story I have ever heard of. Joshua Slocum is so far out and such an indomitable human being that it is difficult to fathom without reading the story. This book is truly an exercise in understatement.
A large society of Slocum afficianados exists now, largely in response to this one book. I just this past friday saw a replica of the Spray, the vessel on which he made this unprecedented voyage, owned by an old sailor. The replica is named Joshua, and sails from Alameda California. I saw it because it was at the annual wooden boat festival in Port Townsend, Washington.
Spectacular.
Very Disappointing.......2007-08-17
Wish I had been a little more careful before I selected this edition. It's a tiny book with stiff pages and cover which doesn't stay open unless you want to break the spine. Just awful. I'll find a different edition at the library.
no illustrations.......2007-06-27
this edition has no illustrations, a cheap edition, very frustrating because the book is very good. I was forced to buy another edition with the illustrations, but have had problems with the shipping from the vendor, the book has not arrived, so I will have to buy a third edition !! Very frustrating. The first time this has happened to me at Amazon.
Focus, enthusiasm, and dauntless expectation of good fortune.......2007-06-09
That seems to be Slocum's approach to solo circumnavigation -- the narrative tone is so matter-of-fact, he could be describing a walk in a large and unfamiliar park.
The audio CD is a bit curious. The reader's sing-song is maddening at times, seeming to directly contradict the author's clear, no-nonsense intention. I found I had to listen and re-deliver silently, so it was a bit more work than it probably should have been, but still worth it. Ultimately, Slocum's is the story of a true adventurer.
Traveling with a man Sailing Alone Around the World...........2007-04-08
This is a classic. Slocum is a man of great depth and at the same time simplicity. He's a genuine nice guy who does what needs to be done, but as a man who is comfortable with who he is and his place in the world and on the sea. He writes for the reader. He has humility and humor and yet a bold sense of adventure; a man's man. I was just chatting with a friend online in Buenos Aires, where Slocum briefly visited in this tale. I wondered how many men like Slocum there are these days when his polar opposite W, is at the helm. I'll remember this book as being a model for a person's life and as just a damn good read!

Great mariner's thrilling, first-hand account of the wreck of his ship off the coast of South America, the 35-foot "brave little craft" he built from the wreckage, and its remarkable, danger-fraught voyage home. A 19th-century maritime classic brimming with courage, ingenuity, and daring.

After suffering a shipwreck, the Slocums wait for help in Brazil; it doesn't come, so they build the Liberdade, a 35' cross between a dory and sampan. They sail the "canoe," as he calls it, back to America.

A good little book.......2005-08-20
Everything that I have read by Slocum has been an enjoyable glimpse into history. This little book is no exception. It gives a first-hand look at the sailing world in the late 1800's.

Book Description
Joshua Slocum (February 20, 1844 - on or shortly after 14 November 1909) was a Canadian-American seaman and adventurer, a noted writer, and the first man to sail single-handedly around the world. In 1900 he told the story of this in Sailing Alone Around the World. He disappeared in November 1909 while aboard his sloop-rigged fishing boat. Captain Slocum, a highly experienced navigator and ship-owner, rebuilt and refitted the derelict sloop Spray in a seaside pasture at Fairhaven, Massachusetts during a thirteen-month period between early 1893 and 1894. Between April 24, 1895 and June 27, 1898, Slocum, aboard the Spray, crossed the Atlantic twice (to Gibraltar and back to South America), negotiated the Strait of Magellan, and crossed the Pacific. He also visited Australia and South Africa before crossing the Atlantic (for the third time) to reach home after a journey of 46,000 miles.

Book Description
The premier predatory animal in the Southwest, and certainly the most controversial, the wolf came to grips with European settlement, particularly the livestock industry, and lost. First in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, and finally in Old Mexico, the southwestern wolf was driven to extirpation; ironically, the last wolves were hunted down not long before the advent of lawsand a conservation ethicthat could have saved them. Drawing on reports of the U.S. government's former Office of Predatory Animal and Rodent Control (PARC), and from accounts of wolf hunters themselves, David E. Brown has compiled the history of the wolf's elimination. Included is a complete documentation of the eradication program, fascinating stories of the last few wolves that eluded hunters, and information on wolf biology from those who best knew its habits.
Since its first publication in 1983, The Wolf in the Southwest has proven itself as the single most valuable and informative reference to Canis lupus of the Mexican borderlands. Now, the descendents of the last wolves captured in Mexico once again roam portions of wilderness in New Mexico and Arizona. With reintroduction, this second edition contains a new Preface and Epilogue by David E. Brown, and a new Foreword by author and biologist Harley Shaw. Once again there are wolves in the woods, and just as in the days of the pioneers, people are taking sides. Love him or hate him, the wolf is again making history, and The Wolf in the Southwest is back in print.
Customer Reviews:
A Dramatic Reminder.......2002-10-20
The distant howl of the wolf seems at home alongside campfires under a brilliant moon. The echoes of those cries ring with loneliness and pain. They are forever linked with the wildest of the wild, nature untouched and pure. The Southwestern U.S. to Mexico is a wild and natural area, but far from untouched and pristine wilderness areas. Moon-filled nights are no longer punctuated by the wolf's plaintive calls due to a century of persecution that eliminated all species of wolf from the South West. With the attempts to reintroduce wild packs and the subsequent controversy regarding this issue a new edition of the David E. Brown's brilliant `The Wolf in the Southwest - The Making of an Endangered Species' has been released by High Lonesome Books. Originally published in 1983, `The Wolf in the Southwest' documents the fervor to rid the wolf from the wilds of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas from the late 19th century until the late 1970's. David E. Brown has painstakingly researched his book from decades of archival records documenting the plight of the southwest cattlemen. These ranchers whose heavy losses to cattle depredation lead to a government sanctioned declaration of war on all predators. It is a grimly fascinating tale of the sad history of the wolf in the southwest. David E. Brown's `The Wolf in the Southwest' is the definitive resource on the various species of southwestern wolf, covering their biology, territory and first hand descriptive accounts of their place within their historical environment. These coincide with various trapper reports, techniques and encounters. Thorough and complete with many historical photos and documents, David E. Brown brings this shortsighted era to life. `The Wolf in the Southwest - The Making of an Endangered Species' is a bitter read for it eulogizes, not celebrates the wolf. A dramatic reminder of how destructive the world was and still is and how once we set foot in pristine natural areas we slowly begin to lose them.
The Wolf In The Southwest.......2002-10-10
As always, David Brown's revised edition of The Wolf In The Southwest, meets the highest standards in wildlife writing! This updated version is the 'cornerstone' of information on the history of the Mexican Gray Wolf in the southwest, and has practical insight included for the wolf's current status in Arizona and New Mexico. It is an unbiased, factual representation of historic gray wolf management and biology, and a valuable resource on this large carnivore, which once again roams the manificently rugged Arizona-New Mexico border country.

Customer Reviews:
Buy this for the Photos only.......2000-04-25
While it's hard to knock anyone who clearly has a passion for the Beatles, the fact remains that this book is only worth it (IMHO) as a reference for its photos of Beatles memorabilia. The pricing is wildly off in many instances. And there are many items that you may argue do not deserve any mention due to their lack of collectibility (would you pay ANYTHING for a Mid-West newspaper announcing John's death? - much less hundreds of dollars! ) It feels like one fan's personal photo tribute to their own Beatles collection. A little more research and checking with other collectors could have significantly increased the value of this effort. Having said that, you may find this book still worth it for the photos.
Useful as a picture book,not a price guide.......1998-06-15
This book has some nice photos of newer Beatle items, but is very weak in its coverage of 1960`s memorabilia. Many of the values listed are wildly high, with newspapers relating to John Lennons death priced at over 100 times their actual $5. value. The items depicted in the book seem to be randomly selected, anyone trying to value their collection will be unable to find numerous licensed items produced in the 70`s,80`s and 90`s,the era this book covers.

Book Description
Tough Plants for Florida Gardens is for gardeners who want low care, no care, tried and true plants for their gardens. This is the book for gardeners who want plants they can plant and forget!
Tough Plants for Florida Gardens is written for novice and accomplished Florida gardeners alike, for all gardeners who value their leisure time. They also value the appearance of their home and appreciate the benefits of well-placed landscaping…however; they do not want to devote too much time to keeping it beautiful.
Tough Plants for Florida Gardens includes over 180 of the toughest plants for Florida gardens, including annuals, perennials, shrubs and small trees, ornamental vines, and grasses. Each featured plant is noted for its ability to thrive with minimal care. Many of the selections can withstand drought, poor soils, and minimal (or no) pruning, while providing beauty and charm in the Florida landscape.
Each selection provides specific information on the plant's use in the landscape, mature size, flowering characteristics (if applicable), varieties, soil preference, and propagation. Each chapter also contains informative essays covering topics such as: companion planting tips, pest avoidance, and handling invasive plants.
Customer Reviews:
Makes the best housewarming gift.......2006-05-30
This is the book that I would write if I could manage to string together more than two intelligible sentences. I have been a fan of Felder Rushing since being given a signed copy of "Passalong Plants" back in 1993, and this book certainly did not let me down. The style of writing reminds me of a casual conversation with a friendly neighborhood gardener who knows more about plants than I will ever hope to. The casual style can be deceiving, however, because the advice is right on target with just enough storytelling to make it interesting. Growing things in "paradise" is not as easy as one might expect, especially if you come from an area that has real dirt and not this playground sand stuff. We won't even mention the heat, humidity, insects, and occasional hurricane.
"Tough Plants for Florida Gardens" makes the best gift for the first time homeowner, inexperienced gardener, or the new arrival in Florida. This book can really save one from making the inevitable mistake of thinking that what grows somewhere else will surely thrive under the Florida sunshine.

Book Description
The fifteen papers presented here examine three centuries of close, if sometimes ambiguous, links between Christian mission and medicine. The authors, who include theologians, historians, sociologists, physicians and representatives of major international health-care organisations, address themselves to such questions as: How is one to assess the results of past missionary health-care effort? How are modern-day Christian organisations to cope with the burden of institutions set up in the past? What links should the Churches maintain with official medical organisations? What position should the Churches take on the `faith v. healing' debate begun by certain religious groups? And how is one to lay the groundwork of a theology of health and healing? The complexity of the issues outlined here can - alas - provide no easy answers.

Book Description
Ghetto Passport addresses pertinent issues that many current and former disadvantaged black Americans face or faced. Ghetto Passport sends a message: Although an individual has left the mental and physical confines of the ghetto, one should never be ashamed of having dwelled in such a predicament. It also suggests that one should use those firsthand ghetto experiences didactically to help those that are left back. Ghetto Passport promotes self-perseverance, resiliency, applied education, and the need for intercultural philanthropy as opposed to a heavy reliance on government as a panacea to African American poverty. Unlike many literary sophisms that address issues surrounding the black community, Ghetto Passport facilitates the psyche of desperate, young, and forlorn African Americans from a first-person perspective and from a now vicarious stance. If you never lived it, how can you truly write about it? Michael McKenzie has lived it. He's written about it.
Customer Reviews:
Big Ups to Mike Mike!.......2005-10-28
Do you have your passport out of the ghetto? If the answer is no then maybe you need to grab a copy of Ghetto Passport. McKenzie, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana proves that you don't have to become a product of your environment if your burning desire in life is to succeed. A motivating autobiography, Ghetto Passport takes a look at life in the ghetto; the good, the bad and the inspiring. An easy read, I often found myself relating to many of the authors life experiences. Don't get it twisted, McKenzie keeps it real with his hard language, but manages to slip in a little humor here and there to lighten the mood just when you start to feel down. Big ups to Mike Mike. Can't wait until you release the next one.
