This is not about information graphics.......2007-05-12

I bought this book looking for examples of transmitting useful information graphically. But in the entire book, I can only find one page about that: the map on page 17. The other 207 pages of this book are strictly about traditional graphic design, by which I mean graphics going for emotional impact, not informational. Just look at the chapter headings:

Chapter 1: Publication Identity Systems
Chapter 2: Posters and Other Promotions
Chapter 3: Logos and Stationary
Chapter 4: Illustrations
Chapter 5: Holiday Greetings

Advertising, posters, logos, catalogs. As a book about graphic design, it might be okay. But putting the words "Information Design" is a blatant lie. I recommend you read something by Tufte instead.

"Why A Picture Is Still Worth 1,000 Words".......2003-08-02

Information Graphics is a terrific book, both as inspiration and as resource. I find I keep returning to it every few days, to be reminded of what is at the heart of graphic design: compelling visual ideas and visual organization. Ronnie Lipton has assembled some GREAT examples of clear wordless visuals, examples that help keep me focused on what I want my graphics to be. (BTW, does anyone know the name of that interesting typeface the book designers used for captions?) I highly recommend this book (and while you're at it, check out another Lipton title, "Designing Across Cultures").

Not really "information graphics".......2003-01-12

I bought this book based on the editorial description promise that it would explain how various information graphics "worked". Unfortunately, I found it to be more of an analysis of advertising graphics instead of information graphics.

Too many of the examples consist of various advertising campaigns or promotional material. Nice as they are, I don't classify them as information graphics; i.e., they don't convey information or instruction.

One good example of information graphics from the book would be the Burton Snowboards instruction manual. Here, clear graphics and judicious use of color provide users worldwide with simple, easily understood instructions, regardless of the language of the customer. Unfortunately, this type of example is the exception rather than the rule.

The majority of the examples in the book, while certainly clever and entertaining, are more like the Big Daddy Photography corporate identity project. The logo definitely creates a mood, but I would argue that it doesn't provide the viewer with any additional information about the company.

Comprehensive book w/Great Photos and Information.......2004-02-22

This book has lovely photos and very detailed information about the Bernese Mtn Dog breed.

Newbie Pet Owners will be impressed by the information and photos, but may find about 1/2 of the book to be relatively useless for them.

However, this book should be incredibly useful to serious Berner people wanting a comprehensive study on Berners in the USA, along with top quality breeding information and study.

The sections on USA Berners, breeding and showing information is incredibly nice to have to study and as a ready reference.

This is a wonderful, lovely and very well written book that every Hardcore Berner person should have!

A beautiful book about gorgeous dogs!.......2001-08-10

I had a great Berner as a companion for 10.5 years before she died. This book is a wonderful tribute to the breed with a detailed history of the breed in this country. It will need to be updated to remain current with activities in the breed, especially genetic testing that is ongoing, but is does a great service to pet owner and breeder with its great descriptions of the standard and discussions of other pertinent matters for breeders, owners, and admirers.

A LITTLE DISAPPOINTING.......2006-11-05

I was a little disappointed by "Secret Gardens of Paris". I found the gardens featured in this book to be similar to each other. I was looking for more variations in color and texture. Most of the gardens have very little color. It seems that green and white are the dominant colors. Also, I was hoping to see more architecture than what is shown of the Parisian buildings featured in this book.

Very poor book and among the 20 or so books I have on the subject - this is no doubt the worse. It does not make me the least inspired. Sorry to say - but do not buy it.

Soothing Inspiration from the Asian Tropics.......2006-02-27

This is one of the more beautiful books on Asian style that I own. Unlike many of the style books coming out from one publishing house, which often recycles photos, no matter how gorgeous...one is somehow always left feeling a little cheated. This slender volume is chocker -block full with lush color and serene settings. Each page is an inspiration.
The layout of the book is divided into sections based on elements of living, such as "Spatial Divisions"( which illustrates in great detail the perimeters and accents so unique to Asia, such as wall space, window and door treatment and most of all, the philosophy and aesthetic ) and "Living", "Eating" and "Bathing" . Each of the chapters is separated by 2 page inserts describing a material or craft technique which defines Asian style and living, and which is essential to almost all cultures and social classes. Such as Bamboo, Lacquer, Ceramics, Textiles, etc. These "accents" serve as wonderful highlighters, really useful to those who are seeking to create an Asian feel.
While the photos are rich with atmosphere and detail, the writing has a little to be desired. One feels the auther is more compiling a smattering of history and information and description to fill out and decorate the photography rather than the other way around. However, the overall book is still filled with a lot of information, and I seem to find myself coming back again and again, reading a little here and there rather than straight through.
One other oversight is that while the title is quite vague, I did not find it much of a source book, but rather an illlustrated variety of asian elements, which ofcourse may be inspiring, but hardly practical. There is however, included in the back a Directory, with an extensive list of Hotels, Museums, Shops, and Suppliers , mostly in Asia and the UK. (None in America). It is also almost wholly focused on tropical asia, with a few rare shots of Japan or India. Though this does not bother me in the least, as the book is so beautiful and intoxicating as it is, that might be a disappointing factor for those expecting a more general overview.

As parting remark, I have to re-emphasize the Beauty, and incredible good taste revealed and celebrated in each shot on every page and of the gracious home owners and businesses who opened their doors to their down-right sublime and breathtaking creations for us to dream and be inspired.

If you are seeking a gorgeous, illustrated book that really celebrates and reveals (tropical southeast) Asian style, this book is the leader of the pack.

To make our bodies do all of the incredible things that we ask of them we use images, and since our bodies are always changing and feeling different sensations, we often need to find new images to keep pushing our performance further and further. This book is a collection of hundreds of interesting suggestions for images that all dancers should find useful. Some you may already be familiar with and some will be new to you. In dance class, images are constantly being taught to dancers, so this is also an excellent resource for teachers as well as students and seasoned professionals. Maybe you will find just the right image for that tricky pirouette or jump here! This book is recommended for dancers of all levels, from beginner to professional.

As a dancer and a beginner I was struggling with jazz technique for a long time. The imagery approach has helped me greatly to improve my plies and turns, posture and interaction with space. The essence of the imagery approach is to identify yourself with an image. As an example the one that inspired me was "a growing root". I keep coming to this book again and again, when I need to recupirate and find inspiration. It also developed my imagery and gave me another prospective on relationships, energy and dancing.
