4 out of 5 stars Birds of a feather.......2000-07-12

My two year old loves this book and it is a frequent bedtime book for her. The pictures and "bio" information on the birds is entertaining as well as informative. The book has gotten her looking up to explore instead of just at her feet.

A good book for learning animal names.

4 out of 5 stars good for certain purposes.......2003-01-18

The book consists of names of North American wild animals. The author apparently laments that many North American children grow up familiar with giraffes and elephants but ignorant of the animals in their very own continent.

                  Book Description

RV Living in the 21st Century; The Essential Reference Guide for ALL RVers will quickly become your best friend as you explore North America. It combines basic timeless RV information new RVers need to know, plus seasoned RVers will value the numerous hints and tips covering everything from packing to stretching dollars to driving their unit. RV Living in the 21st Century also includes a wide overview of updated changes in technologies that were not even thought of pre-9/11. Peggi McDonald freely relays both the good and not so good happenings she and her husband John experienced during two decades of fulltiming. As a Canadian snowbird that spends half the year in the U.S.A., she also readily shares her comprehensive border crossing knowledge.

"What must I know before I buy my first RV?" "How can I learn to drive that new `BIG' RV?" "Can I park without hook-ups?" "Where do I find campgrounds?" "How do you hook up the sewer?" "Is there a secret to packing my cupboards so contents stay where I put them?" "Can I connect to the Internet while on the move?" "Is it difficult to winterize my RV?" "How much does it cost to live on the move?" Questions, questions, questions? No problem, these are only a few of the many situations Peggi discusses, in this interesting tell-it-like-it-is publication. She covers all topics concerning the RV lifestyle including numerous options to staying in touch via voice and calling cards as well as logging onto the `Net from the comfort of your RV using your laptop and cell phone or WiFi or satellites. Technology is continuously changing, but Peggi helps you through the maze to ease the transformation.

The pages of this comprehensive reference guide are jammed with helpful hints that simplify extending space, pet travel, everyday living and so much more. Although a portion is directed to fulltimers, a mega amount of information throughout the 296 pages of RV Living in the 21st Century will assist the new RVer, travelling in any size of RV, to quickly become comfortable in their home on wheels. It also addresses on-going concerns of the part time and seasoned RVer.

Throughout the pages this avid RVer conveys many of the `life-lessons' she learned the hard way so those new to this lifestyle can avoid her pit-falls. Topics listed as titles and sub-titles rather than chapter headings, plus the comprehensive Index makes it easy to quickly find answers to your questions. Personal stories of places her and John visited along with a rendition of the unique experiences of their fascinating life on the move makes this book difficult to put down. Many new RVers read it once for enjoyment and several times more to highlight specific advice. Their dog-eared copy then nestles in an accessible spot in the RV for immediate reference.

Many dealers and RV salesmen stock this informative easy-to-read guide to present as a cherished gift to new buyers. They want their customers to enjoy their RV lifestyle journey to the fullest.

                  3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2007-04-01

The author sounds like a nice enough person, but I did not buy the book to learn about her personal life. I was looking for something of a more technical nature to help me decide on what sort of RV I wanted. This book was not it. This is more of a Travels With Charlie type of book. The author is Canadian and a lot of the information has to do with Canadian laws. The photos are amateur photography in black and white and they are fuzzy and indistinct. At times I could not make out what the photos were attempting to show me. She'd be writing about how cute they had fixed up the interior of the RV and there would be this picture of fuzzy something-or-other.

5 out of 5 stars Great RV Companion Book.......2006-02-01

RV LIVING IN THE 21ST CENTURY by Peggi and John McDonald is an excellent publication and a MUST for ALL RVers - from those new to the RV lifestyle to seasoned RVers. The book is organized by chapters which guide you through buying an RV or camper to where to stay, how to pack, what to purchase for multiple uses, how to add storage and organize, and many many more tips. The authors are well qualified for writing this and their other books listed below. They have spent years living in their RV six months in Canada and six months in the United States each year. They are also authors of 'SPIRIT OF THE OPEN ROAD and RV PACKING TIPS and RV LIFE LESSONS and EASY LIVING HINGS and RV TRAVEL TO CANADA E-BOOK.
Although we have been RV-ers for 30 years, we learned a lot from these EXCELLENT books. A very good investment for life on the road...whether for short or long stints. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, conversational guide.......2005-03-29

For anyone considering or experiencing the RV lifestyle, this book is a wide-ranging tour of things you need to know. Peggi McDonald, a Canadian with extensive (20 years on the road) RV knowledge; been there, done that. She shares the kind of information and advice that enable people to build their competence and confidence as pat-time or full-time RVers.

The book is written in a conversational style, rather than technical. It's easy to understand, appreciate, and absorb. The pages are filled with tips that will reduce ignorance and risk for experienced people, as well as for the newbie. Everyone can learn from the depth and breadth of the insight shared by the author.

This book was written by a Canadian who travels in the United States and Canada. Readers will benefit from the multi-national perspective she brings to the subject. Her writing is seasoned with personal stories that illuminate her points and express the human side of this lifestyle. It's a welcome counterbalance to all the do-this-and-do-that advice that is essential in this kind of a guide.

Readers will gain valuable knowledge about the RV world, life on the road, protection of life and property, full-timing, and communication. If you make a list of all the questions you might have-before you read the book, you'll discover that most of your concerns will be addressed as you work your way through this resource.

Great learning opportunity...and gift for people considering this increasingly popular lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars RV Living in the 21st Century.......2004-10-12

I enjoyed reading this RV book. I found it to be easy reading and presented in an easy to digest format. The security tips for your house while you are away and health & safety tips are just a couple of subjects out of many, that are invaluable and give you peace of mind! I have been RVing for years and even learned things I hadn't come across before. I am really impressed that another woman RVer knows so much about the systems of an RV and among other things knows how to actually dump the holding tanks. After reading this book you will also know how! One of the most important and overlooked subjects about your RV are the weight issues involved. Peggi gives information about where and how to weigh your RV and terminology involved this includes motorized and towables. For new RVers especially, reading this book will put you light years ahead of the game! Good job Peggi Mcdonald!

This excellent book is a very reader friendly book. It is well illustrated and a very valuable resource for your RV libary. This would be a good companion on any journey.

5 out of 5 stars Protect Your Work Easily.......2006-09-14

Tad Crawford has written a whole series of books out of his expertise in the law and creative arts, with a special focus on photography and visual arts. I'd suggest looking at Tad's other books, too, since this one is more action-focused without extensive explanations of the whys and wherefores of it.

"Business and Legal Forms" has the documents you'll need, such as model and property releases, copyright transer forms, publishing contracts and other stock art forms. His descriptions are very helpful. Of greatest practical use, though, is the included media containing MS Word documents of all of the forms.

If you're just getting started in the arts, you need this book!

5 out of 5 stars Most Important Book I've Purchased.......2006-03-09

                    5 out of 5 stars Great value!.......2000-04-16

Not only does this book present a wealth of practical information on the business end of illustration, but the included CD-ROM works for Macintosh users as well as Windows. The electronic versions really *work* and are easily customizable. A very well done and helpful publication.

                    5 out of 5 stars Essential.......1999-07-01

A superb book! When you consider that I downloaded a single "shareware" contract for artists that the author wanted $50 for, you realize the value of this book. And this book comes with a CD-rom with all the forms in electronic format, so you don't even have to go to the trouble to type or scan them in! This is the essential book for all graphic artists.

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for commercial artists!.......1998-12-19

I found this book to be very helpful and well- thought-out. The author has provided an extremely powerful tool. He has thoroughly covered practically every situation a commercial artist is likely to face. This book contains 21 complete tear-out forms appropriately prepared for specific business matters such as estimates, collaboration, illustrator-agent agreement, consignment and sale of artwork just to name a few. This new revised edition conveniently includes forms on a CD-ROM. It also includes a detailed explanation on how to use each form. The legal advice found in this book will surely save you a great deal of time and money which is invaluable to any working artist. Unless you are a ''starving artist'' who works for food only, this informative legal guide will no doubt prove itself very useful and effifcient. This is truly an essential book for commercial artists!

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating book, great to add to collection of Lab books........1997-11-06

This is a lavishly illustrated book that is just plain a treat for the eyes. It's also well written; slanted toward the working side of the breed and containing a few digs at the show breeders, it nonetheless offers up some good reading. The most controversial part of the book deals with Mr. Wolter's theory of the history of the Labrador (lost in the mists of time, so open to [wild] speculation), but the theory is interesting whether or not you buy it, and the photographs and supporting documents of interest. I like this book even though I have quibbles with parts of it and recommend it to people seriously interested in Labradors. If you're just looking for basic info on the lab, though, I would start with something else.

4 out of 5 stars Field Guide to Antique Sewing Machines.......2002-01-31

This book, though outdated, gives a tremendous amount of detail on the models, manufacturers, serial numbers for dating a machine, and suggested values. Although two reviewers have stated the prices are out of line, I personally find - both online through EBay and offline in multiple flea markets, junque shops and antique stores - that they are a good rule of thumb, if not a little low on special machines. Featherweight Singers are included, although not as old, they are in heavy demand by crafters and collectors alike.

Author has put absolutely ludicrous prices on these machines. Has no idea what the actual value of any of them are. Must be dreaming!

The values he places on machines are ridiculous and of absolutely no use to any serious collector. Lots of wishful thinking on the author's part as to the scarcity and value of any of these machines!

5 out of 5 stars Book is a wise purchase for collectors or library reference.......1998-03-25

This book is an invaluable referenece for the serious collector of antique American sewing machines. It covers machines manufactured from the late 19th century up to the Singer Featherweight 221. Originally published in 1992, the prices given may be out of date by now. At any rate, the figures given are not precise, but are ballpark amounts, designed to give the would-be purchaser a price range to work within. Another reason to choose this book is the fact that it contains many clear black and white photos of early models, which will help the novice collector in the search for the perfect machine at the right price. I also recommend this book highly for public library reference collections (which is where I found it...in my public library!)

2 out of 5 stars Good book for Southern Nv, not so helpful for Northern Nv........2004-08-04

I recently moved from the central coast of California to Northern Nevada. Being an avid gardener, I was concerned as to what type of gardening I was going to be able to enjoy in my new home. I purchased this book prior to moving and was totally frustrated. This book leads you to believe that nothing grows in northern Nevada. Imagine my surprise when I arrived and found an abundance of plants to choose from. Some of the plants that were suppose to be forbidden for my area were growing heartily! The author's are from the Las Vegas area and really don't know much about gardening in the northern part of the state.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Nevada Gardeners.......2004-07-14

I devoured this book. I'll soon be gardening in the upper desert (cold desert)of Northern Nevada. Gardening books for that particular region have been hard to come by. This book covers all regions of Nevada. It is short on photographs, but it is well-organized and simple to follow. I'm so glad I found this gardener's bible.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Nevada, Arizona Gardeners.......2002-03-16

I just finished reading this book and found it to be an excellent source for desert gardeners. The authors are long time desert gardeners themselves and it shows. The book is easy to use, easy to understand, well-written, and quite comprehensive. A great deal of plant material is covered here.
The sections on growing lawns under hot, desert type conditions are especially good, and are obviously the result of many years of hands-on, practical experience.
Much gardening reading material is not of much use for people living in areas like Las Vegas, Nevada, but this material certainly is.
If I had but one gripe about the book, it is that it does not cover allergies caused by landscape plants very well. But then, not many gardening books do.

                      5 out of 5 stars Gardener's Delight.......2001-12-18

This is one of the most comprehensive books that covers all the geographical areas of Nevada. It has a wonderful cross section of plants suitable for the cold climates as well as the desert of Southern Nevada.

The authors are both respected professionals in this field, and you can trust what they say. Unlike other volumes that have more pictures than text, this one gives information that is usable.

This would be the best gifts you could give to someone that wants to enjoy getting thier hands dirty and their yards beautiful.

                      Book Description

This pioneering study has been meticulously assembled through extensive fieldwork throughout Tennessee. Lifestyles of Tennesseans prior to 1850 ranged from mountain cabins to plantation mansions and the furnishings were designed to accommodate either setting. Here is a variety of desks, bookcases, and secretaries; sideboards, presses, cupboards, dressers, wardrobes, bureaus and bedsteads; sugar chests and cellarets; candlestands and shaving stands and washstands; cradles, bed steps, chairs, benches, sofas, and tables in dozens of sizes, uses, and names. Featuring many pieces from private collections never before documented, "The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture" chronicles the originality of design and decoration, the choices of woods, and the simplicity and sophistication that signifies "made in Tennessee." The authors consider sources of labor, location of shops, volume of production, and marketing techniques. Just as important, the authors have conducted exhaustive research into the identities of Tennessee artisans and the furniture industry, and the book includes a checklist of 1,400 furniture makers working in Tennessee prior to 1850. This will be the definitive study for years to come.

This is a splendid book, originally published by the Tennessee Historical Society, and sold at the Tennessee State Museum. Photographs and descriptions are excellent, as are the examples. The book is not engaged in "price guessing" and the like. Rather, it is designed for the person who is familiar with the construction of period furniture and who is cognizant of the terminology. It is highly recommended for collectors, dealers and anyone else interested in ways and furnishings of the past.

                        Book Description

Kazuo Ohno is one of the founders of the Japanese modern dance form, Butoh, which had a large influence on contemporary American modern and postmodern dance. Now for the first time, Ohno's words and insights are available in English. This book brings together two distinct but related works: the first, Food for the Soul, is an interview with Yoshito Ohno about his father and his father's dances. With the help of some 100 photographs, he reveals a compelling and complex figure. The second, Workshop Words, is a collection of talks given by Kazuo Ohno to his students during workshops, complemented by photographs of Ohno in intimate settings. Lavishly illustrated and beautifully designed, this book is a finely nuanced portrait of one of the most distinctive contemporary performers to emerge from Japan in the 20th century. It is an indispensable manual for the aspiring performer in any field.

The Kagero Diary precedes the most famous of Japanese literary creations the Genji monogatari by a few decades. This is the second full translation of the Kagero Diary, the first was by Edward Seidensticker, and I believe this one to be the superior. Dr. Arntzen begins with a 50 page introduction that informs the reader of both the historical and the literary realam in which the Diary was created, and she gives a basic description of the poetry, religion, and politic of the time, so the reader can easily understand what is taking place. Instead of footnotes the author puts the footnotes parallel to the diary itself making for very easy reference. The Diary itself is a staright forward memoir of Michitsuna's mother telling of her marriage woes. A wonderful book.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating and a must for Tale of Genji fans!.......1999-03-06

This book (same as the Gossamer Years tr. Seidensticker) is a series of fairly short passages written by "Michinaga's Mother," describing her life in the last quarter of the 10th c., starting with her marriage to a Fujiwara who would become one of the most powerful lords in the country. She is particularly interested in recording the poems she wrote and those written to reply to them by her husband and others. She also gives a vivid picture of her moral struggle with the Buddhist rejection of human loves and the cultural pleasures she is so deeply involved in.

I am just getting interested in Heian Japan after reading the Tale of Genji, and the Kagero Diary is a wonderful source of information and understanding. As a memoir it is much more powerful (IMHO) than Murasaki's own diary or Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book. You can see and feel the author coming to terms with who she is and the life she has lived as she narrates the events that were most important for her.

The text of the translation is set on the right-hand pages and the notes on the facing page. The poems are all transcribed so that one can see the words in them, and Arntzen, the translator, comments on the puns, etc. The notes and introduction are in some places personal, describing a modern woman scholar's changing understanding of the author. They are also smart and scholarly. I am not sure whether this translation would be satisfactory all by itself, but with the notes one feels one is getting in touch with the original. Unfortunately, there are many irritating typos.
