Not a bad introduction........2006-05-23

This is a child's book on Alexander. For a 32 page book, it does a pretty good job covering the Great King's history, with the usual caveats that apply to Alexander (very little actual primary sourcing and the secondary sources are written >150 years after his death).

I'm somewhat of an Alexandrophile, and I liked what I saw (although I didn't agree with everything such as not actually mentioning Beucepholos).

The pictures were cool, too.

All-in-all: Not a bad book at all.

I had to read this for a class. This is not for anyone unless you are searching for strict information. Camille manages to give countless astute observations that would be very helpful in building up a paper. But as historical book unto itself that guises itself as text interpreting Medieval Europe through rebellious artwork, it just doesn't hold much water. The confines here are soooooo narrow that unless you have already a great passion for artwork of this period you will be left quite numb.

Fascinating Exploration of the Margins of Medieval Culture.......1999-12-07

For readers unfamiliar with the culture of the Middle Ages, it is surprising, and perhaps even disconcerting, to learn that a medieval manuscript of a prayer-book could contain marginal images of human excrement, or that medieval churches were frequently adorned with gargoyles depicting diabolic and uncanny figures. This book by Michael Camille, professor of art history at the University of Chicago, is devoted to explaining these strange "margins" of medieval culture. Camille essentially argues that, while such marginal images could on the face of it be interpreted as subverting the conventions of the dominating center of culture, they ultimately served to reinforce it. As the author puts it on page 127, "the edges of discourse...always return us to the rules of the center." In other words, medieval artists toyed with the margins of culture, with "otherness" and difference, yet ultimately sided with the "good" and the "normal." Interestingly enough, the marginal images which were so typical of the high Middle Ages disappeared at the beginning of the modern age. Camille suggests that the margins lost their function of hinting at the ugly reverse of mainstream culture in an age where the mainstream both asserted itself more strongly, rigorously demarcating "low" from "high" culture, and at the same time dissolved difference in the medium of bourgeois taste. Peasants and drunkards, for example, became the explicit object of a genre called the "grotesque." At the end of this fine book, Camille writes: "art collapsed inwards, to create a more literal and myopic dead-center [devoid of the medieval playfulness], taking with it edges and all" (p. 160).

Fifties Glass.......2000-06-27

This is an excellent book for the beginning collector of "fities" glass. This book covers a wide range of manufacturers; with the primary emphasis being on Italian glass. The book contains excellent pictures that make identification of individual pieces an easy task. This book also includes a section that talks about the designers; another that shows the labeling and/or signatures on the glass; and the glossary which I still find very helpful. It is regretable that this book is now out of print--however, I recommend it highly to anyone. Look for it, if you find it, keep it, as it is truly a treasure trove of useful information

I just finished reading the Engineer's Guide to Hustle and it gave me a whole new perspective on dancing. I have been able to use this dance notation system effectively for the dance moves that I learn in class. It works for all the dances that I study. Great Stuff, nicely written.

This is the biography of an American slave who was born in Africa. His adventures brought him to Rio de Janeiro, New York, Boston, Canada, and Britain; he knew Arabic, Dendi, probably Hausa, Portuguese, English, and French. In recent times scholars raised the doubt that such biographies of slaves born in Africa were only partially true, the editors traveled to Diougou and Brazil and followed the traces of Baquaqua, collection, documents, oral hisrtory and written reports. They photographed the sites described by Baquaqua and included them in the book. They have also added several letters and other documents to the 1854 original edition. Baquaqua was enslaved in northern Benin in the early 1840s when he was about 20. At the time he was a bodyguard for the ruler of a subordinate town. He was abducted, taken south through Togo to Ouidah, a port in Dahomey, shipped to Pernambuco in Brazil, and sold to a merchant from Rio, who sold him to another Rio merchant, who took him by ship to New York City, where a little-known black group, the New York Vigilance Society, convinced him to jump ship. He escaped to Boston and traveled to Haiti, the only free Black state, where he was picked up by the Free Baptist Mission. Here Baquaqua converted to Christianity. He later returned to the U.S. and attended college, and traveled extensively. Robin Law, University of Stirling, Scotland, is the author of The Slave Coast of West Africa. Paul E. Lovejoy, York University, is the editor of Transformations in Slavery: A History of Slavery in Africa.

I found this book to be a great way to learn about public hiking trails in CNY area. It has many details about access, estimated time, and conditions on the trails. One particularly useful feature is that it has a copy of a topographic map of the area with the trail clearly marked. Has a map showing the relative positions of each trail across the region with the table of contents. I like this book because it gives me ideas about new places to explore with lots of specific information.

A Visit To How It Was..........2007-04-30

I liked reading this (though I didn't finish it--as I lost interest half way through) because it took me to a time when people had to write letters. Sir John Gielgud was a famous ACTOR...especially on the London State initially...and it's amazing to read about all of the other actors, friends and family that crossed his paths. It's a reminder that over time...a Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie will be nothing but a distant memory and no one in 100 years will really know of them as readily as they do today. Thank God for books...they take us back to another time...and I do want to go back and finish this book ONE DAY...it's just that a better book came along. I nned to stop myself from getting sidetracked. :(

To Be or Not to Be? Find out about John Gielgud through his letters.......2005-09-08

Sir John Gielgud was born in the reign of Edward in 1904 dying
in 2000 with fame, fortune and a reputation as a great classical
actor as his legacy.
The book is a collection of his letters from from his youth
through the rest of his Methuselah long lifetime. Gieguld was
complex with many aspects to his character.
Gielgud was a superb actor of such great Shakespearean roles
as Hamlet, Romeo and Richard III. In later years he was noted for cameos in films (some of the movies were horrid!) winning a
best supporting actor Oscar for his turn in "Arthur" with Dudly
Moore. Along with such British acting legends as Olivier, Guiness, Olivier and Peggy Ashcroft he has brought culture to
millions. His resonant and musical voice will live as long as
there is recorded sound. No wonder a theatre in London has been
named "The Gielgud Theatre." No wonder he was knighted in 1953.
No wonder the many books he wrote have been bestsellers. He was
witty and well traveled. I was tired after learning of all the
climes, times and theatres upon whose boards this seven league
booted vagabond traveled in his long career (He came from the
great Terry acting family and was a born actor!).
Sir John was openly gay. He had a succession of male lovers
throughout his life. In 1953 he was briefly arrrested for solicitation in a public place causing a minor scandal.
Gielgud was prickly and often condescending to folks from the
provinces. He was wont to make snide remarks about Jews and people of color. He was a narcissist who worship himself and his
career though he was at the same time a good and loyal friend.
While at times catty and meanspirited he could also be generous
to others.
I find Gielgud to be a better actor than a man. This book will be boring to anyone not familiar with the actors of an earlier time. It is revealing of a person a theatre/film buff should be
acquainted with in an understanding of 20th century things thespian.

Wonderful Summertime or Anytime Read.......2004-06-25

I think letters make the best autobiographies. By definition, letters by the subject are first-hand. They are convenient, because they are also by nature episodic, which means you can put them down and pick them up when the mood strikes. And John Gielgud's letters certainly prove wrong those who say he never wrote an autobiogrsphy. (As the Washington Post reviewer says here, he must have written two letters to different people every day of his life.)

So, here's not just a life ideally presented, but a life worth knowing about, since Gielgud was one of the three or four greatest English-speaking actors of the twentieth century.

Also, we have the experience of Gielgud's films, which flesh out for us this man of letters (literally and figuratively, since Gielgud was the first actor to receive an honorary doctorate from Oxford.) As was also pointed out in the Post review, Gielgud was not just a great actor but a gifted writer, so we have the treat of beautiful prose, rendered in the service of a rich history: this man knew and had opinions about almost everything and everyone that mattered in the performing arts, especially the stage and screen.

Through thess letters, we also end up knowing something about the luminaries of the world Gielgud inhabited and moved about in with complete ease. Gielgud writes conversationally, candidly and competently to and about people we only dream of knowing - Shaw, Coward, Gish, Lunt and Fontaine, Olivier and Leigh, Selznick, Richardson, Guinness, Stravinsky, Brando.... Amazing! And in such a natural, unassuming way that there's not even a hint of name dropping or self-promotion, which is so tiresome in today's celebrity interviews and memoirs.

Here is a great actor, director, producer and impresario, who takes his work seriously and has a glorious time doing it, who loves and is loved and who lives into his 90s. If only everyone could be so lucky. On second thought, it wasn't just luck...

One quibble: The picture selection is very poor. If one didn't know better, they might think that Gielgud was born middle-aged. But this is Gielgud's book, and kudos to John Mangan, whose enormous work of collecting, collating and editing has made it so.
