Mr. Ben-Shahar does a great job at presenting his research and personal experiences in various Southafrican bush areas. In addition to his interesting narratives, Ben-Shahar provides us with the opportunity to enjoy some of his outstanding photographs. A must read if planning a trip to a Southafrican destination.

"On the Trail of the Wild..." captures the essence of a land that is a curiosity to so many and yet known to so few. The author has brought to life some of the more spectacular regions of Southern Africa, with detailed descriptions of the topography, ecology, and it's wildlife inhabitants. From the smallest beetle to the massive elephants, he describes their interactions and the important role each plays in this complex society. And into all this he has woven some incredible personal experiences that the average urban dweller can not begin to imagine.
Rather than painting a glamorous picture of life in the bush, Mr. Ben-Shahar has presented a realistic description of the harsh conditions he experienced and the unpredictability of the wildlife. The fact that he survived an elephant attack, endured the long and painful recovery, and still returned to the bush speaks well for his deep love and respect for this wonderful land.
If you've ever been to Southern Africa or thought about going, this book is definitely one you will enjoy.

One comes across many books on the African wilds both in the coffee table category and the more informative data and detail-type. This book combines the best elements of both, and is one of the most outstanding books I have ever come across on this subject. The photographs are exceptionally good. They are enhanced through the knowledge and sensitivity of the author towards his subject, and this unique combination of understanding and ability provides for a photographic view of the wilds that few photographers, let alone authors, could emulate. The author's experiences and knowledge of both wild creatures and wild places is ably shared with the reader, and together with the magnificent photographs, the reader is able to enjoy the best of the Southern African wilds through the medium of a book - this is a rare achievement!

A very good guide.......2001-07-18
I was traveling in Corsica summer 2001. I had bought this guide and the Insight guide about Corsica. Together they was a very good match.
LP's book have a good diving and walking section. The walking section covers the famous GR20 route in particular. The diving section contains a lot about the diving possibilities and where the best dives are.
There are a lot of small villages in Corsica. Many of them is not mentioned in LP. So don't forget to explore.

Somewhat disappointing.......2007-04-04
Compared to other lonely planet guides, this one is somewhat lacking in information. There are almost no pictures, and very little about what's interesting to see in the various locations.
It gives pretty good information about hotels, but not about what is interesting to see there.
For Corsica, the rough guide is better.
Good Travel Guide!.......2007-02-19
I bought the Lonely Planet book after I fell for a different guide to Corsica that had pretty maps and colorful pictures but was disappointing. This other guide really wasn't giving me the kind of information I wanted. I read the whole thing and was still unclear about which towns in Corsica I wanted to visit. The Lonely Planet guide gave better details and after reading it, I knew clearly where to go. So, fall for the books with color pictures! The Lonely Planet book has great suggestions for restaurants, hotels, and easy hikes. I could only find information on the GR20 in the other book, but the Lonely Planet guide had suggestions for less hard core hikers.

Recent (post-WWII) American history is a highly interesting and frequently-overlooked genre under the overall umbrella of American history study. Many tend to simply forget about it -- after all, it's hard to step back from the times in which one lives and analyze them objectively -- or shrug it off as not important. After all, we LIVED that, right? -- How can it possibly stand up as history? This overlooks the self-evident but rarely-ackwnoledged fact that merely living through something does not mean you understand it -- or, as with one aspect of contemporary American history covered in this book, the counterculture, if you remember it, the saying goes, you weren't there. Certainly, recent history is as interesting and vital as any other era to the objective historian -- and it is certainly the most applicable to our current social and political climate. One can read ancient Greek texts and see how that great society laid the foundation for what is going on at the moment -- but it is much more cognizable, not to mention jolting, when reading about something that happened much more recently, which we can clearly discern as sowing the seeds for the present day. What one often forgets when reading histories of the days of yore is that all histories are inherently prejudiced -- and even, as Oscar Wilde pointed out, autobiographical. When reading about events that one has actually lived through, this oft-forgotten fact becomes apparent.
Though individual parts of post-1945 American history have inspired volumes upon volumes, and even mini cottage industries, general, overarching texts of the period are not abundant. In Our Times is one of the most prevalent. Though this book is often used as a college textbook, it works better as a single reading than as a textbook or a reference. Certainly, it contains a wealth of good information -- but it is presented in the driest, most unimaginable way possible. Chapters are long, with little to no break in text: no captions, graphics, or eye-catching features whatsoever, and very few pictures (none in color) or graphs. Chapters are broken up only by bold typeheadings, and quite rarely at that, making it very difficult to look things up or search for something quickly; this renders the book almost useless as a reference and quite limited as a textbook. As a sit-through read, though, it is quite adequate. This book lends itself more to the historically-curious individual reader than to the student or scholar.

The book reads a lot like an encyclopedia. It contains a lot of good information about social work administration, but is quite dry reading.

Good, but misleading.......2007-04-11
I found A Brush With Disney to be an overall good book. It looks great on the coffee table and shelf, has a beautiful cover, and clear, quality illustrations. That being said, if you think this is a book full of Disney concept art (as I did) you'll be disappointed. The book is not about Disney, but about the artist and his life and work. His work at Disney takes up only about a fourth of the book. I also thought it would feature concept work for different rides, parks, etc. In actuality it only had concept work for the parks and a few of the "lands" in Disneyland (Frontierland, New Orleans Square, Sleeping Beauty's Castle, etc.) I felt a bit cheated after paying $65 because it's as if the artist is selling himself under the Disney name for publicity and name recognition. Anyone heard of Herbert Dickens Ryman before? I sure haven't. I didn't give it a one simply because the content is good, it's just not about what is advertised and promoted on cover.
Not much concept art of early golden Disney animation period.......2005-08-04
It is a great book when you want to learn about collors and style in Disney park design, but not much on the period of Dumbo animation and other early disney design and concept art for animation in the golden period of disney animation. Still great paintings and Aquarels (study the techniques) from traveling and the design paintings, for the disney world themeparks. It gave me the Idear of buying a sketchbook for my world traveling.

Not enough Disney.......2001-12-03
I hate to sound like an ingrate writing this review: Herb Ryman has done some great illustrations. Unfortunately, this book spends too much time showcasing Herb Ryman's non-Disney art--which is pretty mediocre--and not enough space showcasing his Disney work. The highlight of the book--Ryman's first illustration of the soon-to-be-built Disneyland--is spread across two pages, but the page break makes it nearly impossible to decipher what's in the middle of the drawing. (It should have perhaps been on a fold-out, or at least on a single, uninterrupted page.) Other great illustrations, especially early renderings of Tomorrowland, are printed in extremely small 3" images, making them very hard to read. All in all, I'd say don't bother with this book. Ryman's best drawings are already showcased in many other books.
Not so much for Disney historians..........2001-10-15
As a general book about the person Herb Ryman, it is very pretty and well made, and deserves 5 stars.
But as a source of info for the Disney historian, all I can say is: get the public library near you to buy a copy.
Personally, I feel I should have waited to buy it until I had the chance to have a look at the contents... [added later:] I would have bought it, anyway.
A Must Have.......2001-06-19
I will admit that it was strange at first reading this in the first person (I was under the impression that Mr. Ryman had passed away some time ago....If I'm mistaken...Sorry!). Other than that, the book was great.
I think the general public doesn't give a thought to the fact that Imagineers are highly trained/skilled artists. This book really demonstrates this nicely. Who better than Herb Ryman as an example of the fine artistry Disney has cultivated over the years.
Don't expect to see lots of pictures of Mickey and Disney stuff. Sure, it's there, but the book focusses on Ryman, as it should. We can see why Herb was great at his job with Disney because of the wealth of life experiences he had and therefore painted.

A Strong Steady Voice for Animals.......2005-09-03
I've read other books by Cynthia Moss, and she's a great combination of passionate animal advocate and scientist. She knows her material and is well connected with other animal experts in the area. Just a great, great book, fascinating information given straight, neither sentimental nor overly gruesome, well interpreted, tempered, but above all an articulate voice for animals. She respects them and describes them exactly as they are and as they struggle to deal with growing human populations. She's done great things for animals and for humans by educating us; see her website and Amboseli National Park information.
Essential reading for travelers to East Africa.......1998-05-04
This is it! The classic!
Moss covers the essentials of the large mammals of East Africa in readable but scientifically accurate descriptions -- describing not only the mammals but their behavior and habitat.
Every future traveler to East Africa would do well to read the sections of this book covering the animals the traveler expects to observe prior to traveling -- the first time and each time. This book is out of print, but widely available in libraries.

I've bought that book 'cause I'm planning to transform a small corner of my garden into a nice patio. But this book is about balconies, sky gardens, decks, pools, back yards, seaside retreats, etc...Nothing about patios!!! A definite must have. This is by far one of the best inspiring books for outdoor designs. If you are looking for something modern, minimalist, different from ordinary, don't look any further and buy this book. I designed my own terrace thanks to the great ideas and inspiration by Jamie Durie.

This is the best of Durie's books and is an excellent companion for the California garden designer. The plans are helpful for understanding the layout of a garden, but the photos are what really make the book. The light modern style, clever detailing, and CA compatible plants give me new ideas every time I open it.
Must-read for garden design.......2004-07-12
I must admit that I wasn't expecting much from Jamie Durie, knowing him mainly for his home renovation shows in Australia.
However, after much searching through countless books on garden design in bookstores, I found his books to be far and away the best I've seen.
His designs are very modern and innovative and the book gives a lot of insight into the design and construction process. Backgrounds and reasoning on particular choices made and goes into detail on subjects such as lighting, plants and materials.
I own quite a few garden design books and I would definately rate this the best I've seen and just about every design in his books I would rate amongst the best I've seen.

Wow! I just cannot say enough good things about this book! When it arrived, before opening it I expected to just see another book with black and white sketches telling me things I already knew. But from cover to cover, I found tons of beautiful, inspiring photos of actual gardens and landscaping which has given me many good ideas to incorporate into my own plans. The text is also easy to follow and understand (even for a beginner), the detailed captions are very helpful, and the overall layout of this book, with its various sections broken down, is to be commended. I would give it 10 stars!

This book is the most comprehensive guide to the physiology of dancing. It answers important questions about what is normal and what can cause problems. It also deals with correcting technique problems and preventing injuries by proper strengthening exercises. It covers the entire body from head to toe. In my opinion every dance teacher should read this book so they can responsibly develop young dancers. This book should be reprinted --- anyone who dances should read it and keep it handy as a valuable resource.

If C.S. Lewis had been a standup comedian, I think he would have written a book like this.
I've heard some people accuse this work as being too simple, but I disagree. It's easy to read, yes, because it's ridiculously funny. I've never laughed out loud so much during a book. But that is no indication of it's depth and rest assured, it gets deep.
Steele writes in a way that reminds me of a good sermon. His anecdotes and musings keep you entertained and interested, but then he brings it all together to show you the point he's making...and it's a wakeup call. One minute you're doubled over in laughter and the next minute you're in deep conviction.
Perhaps the most endearing quality the author possesses is his ability to be real. Steele shares his thoughts with no hint of finger-pointing, high-and-mighty theology. He simply bares his soul and tells his story, and he tells it in such a way that makes it easy for the reader to relate.
If you're looking for literary fluff, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a refreshingly humorous book with true Christian roots, get Flashbang.

I didn't know that this book was a "spiritual" type book. I usually don't read them....honestly, I didn't get the spirtual message....it's that subtle. The writer is awesome. Had me crying and doubled over in laughter with some of his stories. Will probably read this again....it's a quick read!

This book was incredible. I can be quite picky about some of these new Christian auto biographys that are just "this is why Christianity is hard for me...I'm being real and vulnerable...I am lion...hear me roar." This book however, was real in content, lasting in impression, and fully captivating. The way Mark pulls his story lines together to create the point and thought process that he wants to stick with the reader is unlike anything I have ever read. His writing method definitly breaks the mold and maybe I just have an odd sense of humor, but I can honestly say that while reading it on an airplane in between two business men reading the DaVinci code and Business Weekly, I had to physically close the book at page five due to uncontroled bodily sounds as I was shaking violently. I had the church giggles, no doubt about it. Read this book. Be entertained, and be challenged.

In 1931, Gertrude Murphy Ward was pressing clothes in a Philadelphia dry cleaning establishment when a voice said to her, "Go sing my Gospel and help save dying and lost men and women." With her two daughters, Clara and Willa, she went on to found the group that became the world-famous Ward Singers. By 1970, it took fifty police officers to control the crowds that greeted the Ward Singers at one of their concerts.
Lavishly illustrated with photographs from the author's collection, this book chronicles the world-famous Ward Singers' story from rural Anderson, South Carolina, to the streets of North Philadelphia and beyond. Told by Clara Ward's older sister, Willa, with the assistance of musician and writer Toni Rose, the Wards' story ranges over the joys and frustrations, triumphs and agonies of what it means to be simultaneously a family, an entertainment business enterprise, and a group with a mission to spread God's word.
Like many other gospel singers, the Wards grew up in poverty. Willa remembers living in twenty-four different homes before she was nineteen. This was especially true after Gertrude quit her job to sing for goodwill offerings. By the time of Clara's death in 1973, however, the group was performing all over the world. They appeared on television with Dinah Shore, Steve Allen, Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, and many others and recorded the first million-seller hit by a gospel group, "Surely God Is Able."
From Ma Hannah, matriarch of the Murphy family, to Marion Williams, Mahalia Jackson, and C. L. Franklin, How I Got Over brings to life an unforgettable group of people, some famous, some unknown, as they are vividly recollected by a woman who was there. Couldn't Put It Down.......2007-01-13
I read this because Clara Ward was a supporting character in the excellent biography of the legendary preacher, C. L. Franklin, "Singing in a Strange Land". I agree with other readers that Gertrude Ward was in serious need of extended psychiatric counseling and, very likely, an exorcism. It is beyond doubt that this dreadful woman worked her prodigously gifted daughter Clara to death and labored to deny her access to most human joys. "How I Got Over" is a real page-turner (I finished it in about 24 hours!). It gives the gospel world a bad image, but agrees with my experience (as a Christian) that the shameful private deeds of most pious Bible quoters could teach Hell's minions a few tricks. On the positive side, it (1) gives wonderful insight to the diabolical hardships Jim Crow imposed on Blacks (information most compelling in personal narratives), and (2) shows the magnitude of the debt owed to the Black church by lovers of 20th-century popular music. Despite the book's many virtues, it is obvious that Willa's depiction of Gertrude (and, perhaps, of Clara) is expurgated. For example, the unconscionably low compensation paid to the various Ward groups' supporting singers (and Willa herself) make one conjecture what those group members would have written about Gertrude and Clara.

The original Ward Singers are three strong, Black women who show the true integrity, fortitude, and legacy that belies the woman of color in America. For the understanding of my people I thank God that Willa Ward-Royster had the fortitude to persevere and complete this book. The Ward Singers fought, clawed, and starved to pave the way for our current gospel calvacade of stars today. Mama Gertrude was a fundamentalist steamroller who did wonders with the simple understandings that she grew up with. Clara was a prolific song writer/arranger and a tireless singer/work-aholic who had to work at fever pitch throughout her life to make even a small step away from that fundamentalist prison that she was born victim. Despite the slights from her own mother, Willarene remained selflessly loyal to the memory of her sister. As a sister Willa does protect the reader from much of Clara's activities and stories that do not directly intersect her performances. (You have to get those stories verbally from her contemporaries!) Clara should be proud that she liberated a generation. To deny her sexuality would be tantamount to denying her race. Look at her lyrics and her speeches: Clara still remains a Psalmist and a Prophet.

Yes! Finally after looking for Highways and Hedges to no avail, I found How I Got Over! Never got to meet the lady, but was deeply moved and influenced by her. Met Gertrude, however and one of the Ward Singers. I'm afraid what Willa says about Gert is true and not bias!
Nonetheless, my questions were answered as to why I always sensed a sadness in Clara's incredible delivery. My heart broke for her, and I understand what I'd been told and what I read about the alcoholism!!!! Yes, she was the greatest gospel singer ever, and lives on in my heart, memory and music.

Firstly to all who judge! You are not God. Clara Ward, her mother Mrs. Gertrude Ward, her sister and the other memembers of the Ward Singers were Christians yes. And who are we to say otherwise. But we seem to be forgetting that they are humans also. No man, or child is infallible. Christ was the only perfect creature to walk this earth. And in daily living we are to be like Him the best we can. This biography on Clara Ward was similar to "Got To Tell It: Mahalia Jackson The Queen of Gospel" in that it was out to soil the character of women who work on the Lord's behalf. We forget that. These woman were doing the Lord's work...the disciples had their faults to did they not...Jesus himself was tempted. I think that Willa Ward should be ashamed of herself that her jealousy towards her sister or her grudges against her mother should cause her to paint such a picture of them. If they were indeed like that you should have left that to God to review. I offer the same advice to Jules Schwerin and Brother John Sellers who did a fine job at creating a story that has a whole lot of misinformation (on the part of the author, Schwerin) and makes you believe that Mahalia Jackson was one of the cruelest people that ever walked the face of the earth. Both books make no mention of the fact that both women aided younger gospel singers with their careers and took care of young mother less children. Or the fact that Mahalia helped to send 50 black kids to school. Clara Ward was a mother to Aretha Franklin and her siblings after their mother passed in 1952 and was deeply admired by youngsters like Diana Ross. Or that Mahalia was a good role model and the idol and godmother-like figure to Della Reese, Shirley Caeser, Dorothy Love Coates, Mavis Staples, James Cleveland and Aretha Franklin. I find that both books tend to be biased and unbalanced...one sided and unfare and not worth your money.
herstory: a balm in gilead.......2000-08-22
i truly enjoyed reading the ward sister story. telling the story including the good, the bad and the ugly is an effective catharsis tool for the reader as well as the storyteller.
the book tells the behind the scenes story of many gospel music greats. psychologist tell us that secrets left untold can create unhealthy manifestations. i applaud ward for telling her truth. let us remember that all families and business associates have disagreements and challenges. however, may we never forget that the ward sisters were also pioneering business women, fashion trend setters, and civil rights advocates - activities unheard of in the early 20th century for women of color. though staying behind as administrator of the company may seem unglamorous, it can now be seen as a blessing because ms. ward is still alive to receive all of the accolades bestowed upon the ward singers!
i honor their courage. may we learn from their humanness in all its joy and pain. it is my prayer that this book can be a balm in gilead to heal the gospel herstory/history that we seek to hide, and strengthens the stories behind the music that we find great pride in sharing.

I was born John Westly Burts on March 20, 1942, in Hurtsboro, Alabama. I was reared by my grandmother from the age of two months until I joined the U.S.A.F. in 1960 at the age of 18. My formal education from kindergarten to high school graduation (Roosevelt High) was in the school system of East Chicago, Indiana. Twice married, I am the father of seven (Cyd, Ben, Fonda, Ava, Wanda, Dale, and Vicki). I am now single. My work record includes: steel worker, personnel specialist, U.S.A.F., autoworker, and textile worker. I opted for early retirement in 2002. After retirement, I enrolled at Chattahoochee Valley Community College and received an associate of art's degree. I have been a member of Faith Worship Center International, Full Gospel Church, since March 2000. I now reside in Russell County, Alabama.
