Fantastic Guide-The Real Deal.......2007-06-13
Before purchasing this book, I did a bit of research on the different guides available. One had a lot of advertisements, but was popular. It was more like a Frommers travel book. This one was written by the guy who actually used equipment relied upon by chartmakers for local depth soundings. You could tell by his "local" hints that he really took the time and effort to give you the insider's view. From recomming "Mr.Fantastic" (a local boat vendor who sold us delicious lobster), to recommendations on local restaurants at each of our island stops along the way, this book was fantastic. The black and white pages made it all the more authentic as not being overly commercialized. In each port he gave highly reliable waypoints which I fed into my Garmin GPS, and everything worked like clockwork. His depth soundings in the anchorages were highly reliable as well. Our crew of 6 sailors, all passionate for adventure in the Windward Islands, raved about this book. Other books were aboard, but this one quickly became the one that we relied upon. It was concise and to the point, and we really enjoyed using it. Accolades to Mr. Pavlidis. This is a winner!!
Pretty Good.......2007-01-09
Lots of great info. Unfortunately in Black and White. Good complement to the "Sailors Guide to the Windward Islands".

Book Description
In the nineteenth century the rapidly expanding coal industry was the key to Britainâs industrial growth. The workforce consisted not only of men, but also of thousands of coalmining women, who mined, sorted and transported the coal. Angela John looks at the lives and struggles of these women, and their fight in the 1880s to keep their jobs at the pit. She focuses on the contrasting careers of two women from very different backgrounds: Jane Brown, a Lancashire pit lass; and campaigner Margaret Park, and Mayoress of Wigan. Through the campaign, the author throws new light on Victorian attitudes to working women, and working conditions in general in a major nineteenth-century industry.

The 90's have been called the Decade of Design and to many the Decade of Design as and economic theory is the hope for America to once again surface as the pre-eminent economic leader in the world. Best cat care book I have found........2006-07-21
I have 6 cats and numerous books regarding cat care and management. This book is by far the most useful and readable I have found on the subjest. It is outstanding. I highly recommended for everyone who has a pet cat.
great cat book!.......2003-04-30
Dr. Schwartz has written a real gem! Her insight into cat behavior is presented in a warm, welcoming, and very entertaining way. The book is well organized into specific chapters and is filled with anecdotes about cats she has known in her years of behavior practice, and her own pets, too. This is a lady that writes from the heart with a sense of humor, a great deal of expertise, and a tremendous love for cats. The line drawings are LOVELY, a few are more cartoon like, but clearly this is a talented lady who has studied her subject well! The chapter on pet loss is written with real tenderness. EVERY cat owner should read this book. If you really want to understand cats and learn to Live Happily Ever After With Your Cat, Dr. Cookie's book is one to read over and over, and give as gifts to other cat people you know!
Mandatory Reading!.......2003-04-13
This is book is fabulous and helps explain lots of cat behaviors and how to live (happily ever after) with them. She writes in a sensible, straight forward manner. I think this book should be mandatory reading for all cat "owners", whether they've always had cats, or whether they are first timers. Since shelters are always getting animals because their former owners can't understand or don't want to deal with behaviorial issues, shelters should consider offering the book to people who adopt cats/kittens. As for criticism of the drawings, people need to get off the dot and focus on the extremely helpful info.
Great book.......2003-04-10
This is a great book. I found it full of helpful information and very thorough. It seems Dr. Schwartz has covered everything. The text and format is easily readable and it is illustrated with very cute pictures. I would highly recommend this book.
Written by someone who truly understands cats!.......2003-04-01
I found Dr. Cookie's book to be right on the mark. As I read each page I swear she was writting about my own cats. She really knows what makes cats tick and why. I thought the drawings were cute and comical and her stories were well written and easy to read. It was a refreshing to read a book written by a real Dr. rather than a "self professed expert".

Out of Danger: Poems
ASIN: 0374528772
Release Date: 2005-03-31 |
Book Description
"An engaging mix of the serious and the playful, and Fenton writes with a lightness of touch perfectly suited to the subject." --Alexander Urquhart, The Times Literary Supplement
Forget structure. Forget trees, shrubs, and perennials. As James Fenton writes, "This is not a book about huge projects. It is about thinking your way toward the essential flower garden, by the most traditional of routes: planting some seeds and seeing how they grow."
In this light hearted, instructive, original "game of lists," Fenton selects one hundred plants he would choose to grow from seed. Flowers for color, size, and exotic interest; herbs and meadow flowers; climbing vines, tropical species--Fenton describes readily available varieties, and tells how to acquire and grow them.
Here is a happy, stylish, unpretentious, and thought-provoking gardening book that will beguile and inspire both novice and expert alike.
Customer Reviews:
A Poet's Garden.......2004-12-08
The British poet James Fenton has given us here in this slim volume a list of the plants one would grow if one were given a "blank slate of a garden" and "given the stipulation that everything you grow in this garden must be raised by you from seed." Mr. Fenton's definition of a garden is large and encompassing: It "must include a spectacular one that I saw. . . in Manhattan, which consisted of nothing but morning glories grown on a fire escape, high up above the street. . . or a row of hyacinths in glasses" as well as gardens at Versailles. Some of the groups the writer discusses are broken down as to color, size, flowers for cutting, climbers, and what he calls "Flowers That Hop Around." He also lists several books on growing flowers in his "reference library", equipment and the 100 seed list in the end of the book.
This book is obviously not a treatise on growing flowers. You'll need to refer to other books unless you have a lot of experience. (I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by all this information until I'm told that Mr. Fenton has a fulltime gardener.) Additionally, there are no color photographs here of the various varieties. Mr. Fenton's list is highly subjective. He tells us why he eliminates some flowers and includes others; there are no cottage pinks, for example, because they all have been either bought or given to him as plants.
What I was hoping for in this book I didn't find-- that the writer might somehow tie up poetry and flowers. He certainly didn't have to, but he does make interesting asides on occasion. He opines that one can tell from his photographs that Robert Mapplethorpe "loved flowers" but that we wouldn't have expected him to like plants. And in discussing false bishop's weed, Mr. Fenton intimates that all bishops are false!
You have to tip your hat to a poet who gardens. This little book would make an ideal and unusual gift for your favorite gardener.
Pleasant.......2004-05-22
This is a pleasant little book; basically a series of essays on the writer?s one hundred favourite plants that can quite easily be purchased and grown from seed.
I enjoyed the personal approach to gardening and plants, and also the relaxed random-ness of it. The snobbery of design and planning, of garden bones and vistas, does not hold this writer in thrall. He knows and loves plants, and he wrote these essays about them.
In truth there isn?t much substance here, but it makes a pleasing, quick read, and the book would make a nice little gift for a friend.

Enjoyable approach to gardening annuals.......2003-12-10
James Fenton makes the case for annuals in your garden, which are typically overlooked in gardening writing that concentrates on perennials. This book, which lists 100 of the author's favorite plants to grow from seed, should be read with a plant encyclopedia at hand like as 'Sunset Western Garden', so that you can see what the plants look like and what their care requirements are. Many self-sowing varieties are included, which may convince those looking for a low-maintainence garden that annuals can play a part in it. Color and appeal is emphasized, much like what would have attracted you if you had a chance to garden as a child. The author's garden is in the south of England, which may limit whether his choices are appropriate for your climate.

Twenty-eight Artists and Two Saints: Essays
ASIN: 1569246319 |
Book Description
Mark Morris' 1988 dance, L'Allegro, il Penseroso, ed il Moderato, set to music by Handel and poems by John Milton, and inspired by watercolors by William Blake, has been called a work of utopian grandeur, a masterpiece of craft, invention, and feeling, and in scale and complexity, in a category by itself. From London to Berkeley to Houston, audiences ecstatically cheer for it. More than 200 photographs capture each of the piece's 32 interconnected dances and are accompanied by the text of Milton's interwoven poems, L'Allegro and Il Penseroso, to which Handel set the music. New Yorker dance critic Joan Acocella provides a new essay; Alastair Macaulay and Wendy Lesser also offer appreciations. An overview of the making of L'Allegro, based on interviews with all of the principal artists and many of Mark Morris's dancers, provides an unprecedented glimpse at the creation of this modern-day masterpiece. A glorious celebration of one of the great dance masterworks of the twentieth century, the book contains over 200 color and black-and-white photographs plus reproductions of the Blake watercolors from which Mark Morris drew inspiration.

ASIN: 1405030089 |
Book Description
Nevis is one of those Caribbean islands of which dreams are made--off the beaten track, little known and untouched by mass tourism. For a small island--a mere 35 square miles --Nevis possesses a rich and colorful history. It was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton (1757); Horatio Nelson met and married Fanny Nisbet there (1787) at a time when the island's beauty, combined with the reputation of its planter and merchant families for social grace and good living, caused it to be known as "the Queen of the Caribees." Today, together with St Kitts, Nevis forms the independent Commonwealth State of St Kitts-Nevis. The fifth edition of this guide has been completely revised and updated and amply demonstrates that the island's claim to be "Queen of the Caribees" is proudly maintained.

Book Description
Insomnia has been a lifetime companion of Louise Bourgeois' night hours. Between November 1994 and June 1995, she has committed to paper whatever thoughts, memories, and images surfaced during her long sleepless nights. The resulting 220 drawings are the quintessence of all the impulses, sources, and motifs inspiring her work. "The Insomnia Drawings" show the artist's mind at work: drawings and sketches alternate with poems and aphorisms in both French and English, interspersed with notes referring to the hustle-bustle of everyday life. The series is a unique mirror of an extraordinary woman's life and work: beautiful, disquieting, passionate, inquiring, and imbued with a quirky sense of humor. As soon as the artist agreed to entrust "The Insomnia Drawings" to the Daros Collection, it was clear that this extraordinary work should be presented as a book. The result is a handsome slipcased two-volume publication, edited by Daros Services, Zurich. The first volume contains facsimiles of both the recto and verso of the 220 drawings. The second volume provides the reader with valuable background information on this complex and exhilaratingly beautiful work of art. Marie-Louise Bernadac, a leading Bourgeois scholar, places "The Insomnia Drawings" in context of Bourgeois' oeuvre, providing biographical references for many notes, and pointing out the leitmotifs of Bourgeois' imaginary universe. In a lucid and beautifully written essay, Elisabeth Bronfen traces the nocturnal mysteries of insomnia and places this work of art in a larger cultural context. Furthermore, the second volume offers a chronology and annotated transcriptions of all texts and notes. This landmark publication is a must for everyone wanting to take part in the imaginative journeys of one of today's most important artists. "The Insomnia Drawings" are part of the Daros Collection. 13 x 10.25 inches, 220 illustrations.
Author Quotes:
"She presents herself as a lady-in-waiting, silent and patient, with the night promising to save her from the array of desires such as love, faith, faithlessness, tenacity, ambition, while here sleeplessness prevents any salvation from her psychic distress. If in these drawings and texts the night is metaphorically conceived of as an expanse of water that might engulf her, while sleep would restore her, insomnia is what prevents any voyage into inundation. (...) Because her insomnia brings states of ambivalence to the fore, she keeps returning to the question of being suspended between two emotions-between plentitude and lack, proximity and absence, agreement and contradiction."-Elisabeth Bronfen
"L'art / ou est / la vie, / toi et vous / inspire / unafraid: Art / est le / contraire / du acting. Les paysages de nuit on / envahi les jours. Water is the / opposite of continuity / water can be the best but it can be worse / / M is for mother / in the water / it is subject / to change / or even to reversal." -Louise Bourgeois

One of the best overviews of 14th century illumination.......1997-08-10
The era of France's Charles V was a watershed in the art of manuscript illumination. Learning and religion were highly valued, and the court and its nobles were rich, well able to afford to patronize the best calligraphers and artists.
In this book, Francois Avril (one of the world's greatest experts on manuscript illumination, especially as practiced in France), presents an overview of the finest manuscripts which were produced for members of the Charles' court. A large number of the manuscripts represented belonged to either Charles, himself, or his younger brother, Jean, Duc de Berry (arguably the greatest book collectors of his time).
These books include a large number of books of a religious nature as well as poems, Aristotle's Ethics and books of ceremonial importance. There are forty color plates with excellent descriptions as well as a lengthy introduction which explains the history of this era's illumination.
Any person who is interested in the history or art of illumination will enjoy reading and owning this book, and will go back to it often for contemplation of some of the best illumination of the High Middle Ages

Time capsule for a generation.......2006-11-05
I loved this little book. Not a Hollywood whitewash, but a real story of two people whose love of family and faith shined for a whole generation because of their earnest values and huge hearts.
One of the best biographies about Roy Rogers & Dale Evans!.......2004-08-06
Chris Enss's, The Cowboy and the Senorita: A Biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans is one of the most heart-warming and well written biographies about the "King of the Cowboys" and the "Queen of the West." The personal stories of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans are very well crafted, and the author is able to capture the essence and soul of these two wonderful people. Ms. Enss is articulate, animated, and amazing when she read excerpts from her book at a Barnes & Noble store. Fans of her wonderful book should really meet the author in person. I truly hope an audio version of this book gets produced soon.
Packs in black and white photos and high drama.......2004-07-14
The Cowboy And The Senorita provides fans of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with a new, authorized biography based on the contributions of the Rogers family, who share their inside story of the two. From Dale's determination to be a singer despite her position as a teen single mother to Roy's first wife's death and his struggles raising three children alone, Cowboy And The Senorita packs in black and white photos and high drama to re-create the special challenges and lives of the two.
This story should be required reading !.......2004-05-14
There is a reason why Roy and Dale were and are national treasures, and The Cowboy And The Senorita reminded me why...their convictions, integrity and humility demanded that they were off screen what they were on screen, and their fans knew it and loved them for it. This was not only a nostalgic, entertaining, and inspiring story, I found it direct and readable and loaded with some wonderful rare photos. This is going to be the gift I give to everyone my age and older who needs a smile and a warm memory, and to everyone my age and younger who needs proven and tested human heroes to look up to and imitate. Happy Trails, y'all.
