Fantastic Guide-The Real Deal.......2007-06-13

Before purchasing this book, I did a bit of research on the different guides available. One had a lot of advertisements, but was popular. It was more like a Frommers travel book. This one was written by the guy who actually used equipment relied upon by chartmakers for local depth soundings. You could tell by his "local" hints that he really took the time and effort to give you the insider's view. From recomming "Mr.Fantastic" (a local boat vendor who sold us delicious lobster), to recommendations on local restaurants at each of our island stops along the way, this book was fantastic. The black and white pages made it all the more authentic as not being overly commercialized. In each port he gave highly reliable waypoints which I fed into my Garmin GPS, and everything worked like clockwork. His depth soundings in the anchorages were highly reliable as well. Our crew of 6 sailors, all passionate for adventure in the Windward Islands, raved about this book. Other books were aboard, but this one quickly became the one that we relied upon. It was concise and to the point, and we really enjoyed using it. Accolades to Mr. Pavlidis. This is a winner!!

I have 6 cats and numerous books regarding cat care and management. This book is by far the most useful and readable I have found on the subjest. It is outstanding. I highly recommended for everyone who has a pet cat.

Dr. Schwartz has written a real gem! Her insight into cat behavior is presented in a warm, welcoming, and very entertaining way. The book is well organized into specific chapters and is filled with anecdotes about cats she has known in her years of behavior practice, and her own pets, too. This is a lady that writes from the heart with a sense of humor, a great deal of expertise, and a tremendous love for cats. The line drawings are LOVELY, a few are more cartoon like, but clearly this is a talented lady who has studied her subject well! The chapter on pet loss is written with real tenderness. EVERY cat owner should read this book. If you really want to understand cats and learn to Live Happily Ever After With Your Cat, Dr. Cookie's book is one to read over and over, and give as gifts to other cat people you know!

Mandatory Reading!.......2003-04-13

This is book is fabulous and helps explain lots of cat behaviors and how to live (happily ever after) with them. She writes in a sensible, straight forward manner. I think this book should be mandatory reading for all cat "owners", whether they've always had cats, or whether they are first timers. Since shelters are always getting animals because their former owners can't understand or don't want to deal with behaviorial issues, shelters should consider offering the book to people who adopt cats/kittens. As for criticism of the drawings, people need to get off the dot and focus on the extremely helpful info.

I found Dr. Cookie's book to be right on the mark. As I read each page I swear she was writting about my own cats. She really knows what makes cats tick and why. I thought the drawings were cute and comical and her stories were well written and easy to read. It was a refreshing to read a book written by a real Dr. rather than a "self professed expert".

A Poet's Garden.......2004-12-08

The British poet James Fenton has given us here in this slim volume a list of the plants one would grow if one were given a "blank slate of a garden" and "given the stipulation that everything you grow in this garden must be raised by you from seed." Mr. Fenton's definition of a garden is large and encompassing: It "must include a spectacular one that I saw. . . in Manhattan, which consisted of nothing but morning glories grown on a fire escape, high up above the street. . . or a row of hyacinths in glasses" as well as gardens at Versailles. Some of the groups the writer discusses are broken down as to color, size, flowers for cutting, climbers, and what he calls "Flowers That Hop Around." He also lists several books on growing flowers in his "reference library", equipment and the 100 seed list in the end of the book.

This book is obviously not a treatise on growing flowers. You'll need to refer to other books unless you have a lot of experience. (I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by all this information until I'm told that Mr. Fenton has a fulltime gardener.) Additionally, there are no color photographs here of the various varieties. Mr. Fenton's list is highly subjective. He tells us why he eliminates some flowers and includes others; there are no cottage pinks, for example, because they all have been either bought or given to him as plants.

What I was hoping for in this book I didn't find-- that the writer might somehow tie up poetry and flowers. He certainly didn't have to, but he does make interesting asides on occasion. He opines that one can tell from his photographs that Robert Mapplethorpe "loved flowers" but that we wouldn't have expected him to like plants. And in discussing false bishop's weed, Mr. Fenton intimates that all bishops are false!

You have to tip your hat to a poet who gardens. This little book would make an ideal and unusual gift for your favorite gardener.

This is a pleasant little book; basically a series of essays on the writer?s one hundred favourite plants that can quite easily be purchased and grown from seed.

I enjoyed the personal approach to gardening and plants, and also the relaxed random-ness of it. The snobbery of design and planning, of garden bones and vistas, does not hold this writer in thrall. He knows and loves plants, and he wrote these essays about them.

In truth there isn?t much substance here, but it makes a pleasing, quick read, and the book would make a nice little gift for a friend.

Enjoyable approach to gardening annuals.......2003-12-10

James Fenton makes the case for annuals in your garden, which are typically overlooked in gardening writing that concentrates on perennials. This book, which lists 100 of the author's favorite plants to grow from seed, should be read with a plant encyclopedia at hand like as 'Sunset Western Garden', so that you can see what the plants look like and what their care requirements are. Many self-sowing varieties are included, which may convince those looking for a low-maintainence garden that annuals can play a part in it. Color and appeal is emphasized, much like what would have attracted you if you had a chance to garden as a child. The author's garden is in the south of England, which may limit whether his choices are appropriate for your climate.

One of the best overviews of 14th century illumination.......1997-08-10

The era of France's Charles V was a watershed in the art of manuscript illumination. Learning and religion were highly valued, and the court and its nobles were rich, well able to afford to patronize the best calligraphers and artists. In this book, Francois Avril (one of the world's greatest experts on manuscript illumination, especially as practiced in France), presents an overview of the finest manuscripts which were produced for members of the Charles' court. A large number of the manuscripts represented belonged to either Charles, himself, or his younger brother, Jean, Duc de Berry (arguably the greatest book collectors of his time). These books include a large number of books of a religious nature as well as poems, Aristotle's Ethics and books of ceremonial importance. There are forty color plates with excellent descriptions as well as a lengthy introduction which explains the history of this era's illumination. Any person who is interested in the history or art of illumination will enjoy reading and owning this book, and will go back to it often for contemplation of some of the best illumination of the High Middle Ages

Chris Enss's, The Cowboy and the Senorita: A Biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans is one of the most heart-warming and well written biographies about the "King of the Cowboys" and the "Queen of the West." The personal stories of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans are very well crafted, and the author is able to capture the essence and soul of these two wonderful people. Ms. Enss is articulate, animated, and amazing when she read excerpts from her book at a Barnes & Noble store. Fans of her wonderful book should really meet the author in person. I truly hope an audio version of this book gets produced soon.
