Book Description
The Rough Guide to Thailand is the most discerning and accessible handbook to this intriguing country. A 24-page full colour section introduces the country, its climate, regions and culture and full colour spreads highlight the best of the activities, events and sights. There is evocative coverage of all the sights in opinionated write-ups, including the best beaches and islands, and critical reviews of places to stay, eat and drink. The authors give expert advice on activities ranging from trekking to spa treatments, and from scuba-diving to cookery courses. For every region and town, there are detailed maps, pin-pointing the accommodation and restaurant listings. Finally, in the Contexts section, there is an in-depth discussion of Thailand''s history, religion, wildlife, music and cinema.
Customer Reviews:
Solid travel guide.......2007-04-01
Full of great and relevant information. Some prices have already gone up, despite how recently the book came out, but that's par for the course in Asia. It would have been nice if there were place names spelled out in Thai a bit more, so you could point them out to taxi drivers. They rarely spoke English and my pronunciation of the romanized Thai words wasn't up to snuff. It's also not as handy as a reference guide for looking up phone numbers or addresses to hotels, restaurants, etc. as say the Lonely Planet. It does provide a bit better context though and reads more comfortably. All in all, a good book. I bought it because it was so recent, but think I may go back to Lonely Planet for most future travel guides.
Good Guide except for the Bangkok section..........2005-02-28
I just returned from Thailand and I took four guides: Thomas Cook's, Lonely Planet, Let's Go, and this guide (see my reviews on the others guides, and do seriously consider Lonely Planet Islands & Beaches IF you are only going to spend time as a sun lizard).
`Thomas Cook Thailand' is a special niche guide, best suited for those with tour groups and `Let's Go Thailand' is the guide for those backpackers that are `on the cheap'. This leaves Rough Guide to face off with Lonely Planet and in some areas it is superior to L.P and in one big area it is not.
Rough Guide's restaurant recommendations are by far the best of any guide I reviewed; they are both reliable and informative, giving great descriptions and dish recommendations, "the grilled river prawns with chili, the matsaman curry and the delicious durian cheese-cake." The restaurant prices are listed as: Expensive, Moderate and Inexpensive.
The hotel accommodations recommendations are also descriptive, very reliable and most have either webpage addresses or email. Sadly, Rough Guide still uses the user 'unfriendly' price codes, instead of just saying in dollars (or Bahts) what the cost for the hotel is. Thus you need to memorize the table where the number 4=400-600B and 5=600-900B etc., then you can convert to either dollars or euros to get the price. Also, since the Guide is published in 2004 (thus the information is from 2003) you add 10-20% for inflation. Both Lonely Planet and Let's Go just tell you what the price is. "Duh".
The Guide has excellent information that tells you the nitty-gritty that prepairs you for your trip. It also has great history, religion (Buddhism of course), environmental and cultural sections. Not to be missed is the additional reading recommendations (six pages).
Where it bombs is BANGKOK. The Guide says that Bangkok is "sprawling, chaotic and exhausting" and that is exactly how I experienced the 115 pages that covered this mega-city. The layout is dysfunctional. It has no logical consistency between any two points. Bangkok is the home of 11 million people; it is huge and spreads out like greater Los Angeles. It needs to be broken down into regions and then sections and those need to be logically kept together. But, this guide will give you information on one area, like Thanon Sukhumvit, then 60 pages later the accommodations for that area, then 20 pages back will be the Thanon Sukhumvit map; but wait, the restaurants for that area... you guessed it, will be located some where else. Hello! Who laid this out? What herb, pray tell, were they using? So, if you plan to spend any significant time in Bangkok, then Lonely Planet is a better guide.
Maybe the 6th edition Rough Guide will improve the Bangkok section and hopefully increased the guides paltry index (8 pages for all of Thailand - Bangkok alone could be 8 pages) and make this an outstanding guide. Bangkok aside this is still a strongly recommended guide.
Very inaccurate! Wrecked my Vacation!.......2003-09-06
I bought this book and relied on it to plan my
vacation for 30 days in Thailand with my family.
This book is very, very inaccurate! The
information is so inaccurate that I think the
authors just made up things to fill up pages.
It was worthless when I was visiting cities in
Thailand because each time I found the
information incorrect and misleading. I cursed
this book many times when I was on vacation in
Thailand for being so useless and deceptive and
inaccurate. I really hate to give a book such
a terrible review and I usually would never
comment but because this book let me down so
much in Thailand I decided to tell other readers
to warn them to look elsewhere for "reliable"
information. Have a good trip to Thailand is my
wish to you but buy some other book than this one.
It is DANGEROUS to print untruths and misinformation
and wrong address and wrong prices and wrong
everything else. This book was dead wrong so many
times it made me vomit. The authors now have no
credibility with me and I will never buy another
Rough Guide to anywhere because of it. It's
expecially dangerous when you are traveling with a
young child as I was and relied on the book and it
let me down again and again putting my family in
a bad way really fast. It's not fun when this happens
especially in a foreign country with your kid.
Rough Guide to Thailand.......2000-04-03
Fed up with the traditional Lonely Planet I turned to the Rough Guide for an alternative view. While this guide gives detailed historical/background knowledge it severely lacks in the essentials, notably transport prices and detailed maps.@There were just too many times when this book became a more of a frustration than a help. This book is best read before you go and left at home.
outstanding and thoughtful thailand guidebook.......1999-02-09
This is the first rough guide that I have used. I found it to be easy to use and very thorough in all regards. I would say that this book is a must for all visitors to Thailand.

A quick reference for aquatic plants' lovers.......2001-06-29
If you are like me that loves a lushly planted aquarium, this book is helpful as a quick reference guide. It describes the most common species, the origin and their basic care (temperatura, ideal water parameters, etc.) However, note that the info is limited on each species but, as a quick fix source is good enough.

A great reference for fish care.......2000-06-21
Dr. Carrington has created a short reference book to help aquarists along.
He covers setting up the tank and equipment, aquatic plants, breeding, avoiding disease, identification of disease, and treatment of diseases.
Don't be put off by the small size of this book, it's the best reference I've seen for fish diseases.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good.......2007-07-29
This book is good as a basic reference. It has pictures of most of the popular aquarium plants and a basic how to guide for planted tanks. Definitely good for anyone just starting out or wanting pictures of basic aquarium plants. The care guide in this book is slightly vague on the water parameters/light preferences/nutrient needs for some of the plants.
Good Solid Concise Information on Aquarium Plants.......2000-08-25
I purchased this book because of the other reviews. I have not been disappointed. Even though I just started reading it last night, I can already recommend it. It's not overly technical, but technical enough to answer all my questions (and I love technical info). For me it offers exactly the right mix of useful info, presented in a concise manner, and is enjoyable to read. After only 20 pages, I really feel like I understand plants better and know the inportant factors/variables under my control to help them grow better! Very useful, and inexpensive!
Great book and good price!.......2000-06-22
It is a very good book for beginners and a handy reference manual. When I read some reviews, I thought that the photos were microscopic, but they aren't. Very useful, includes 4 types of biotopes for aquascaping.
Fish Keeper's guide to aquariem plants.......2000-03-18
The comments from others hold true but I would like to add one more thing and that is that the book is very small. Although very informative and with good photography (it shows you what plants look like brought up under poor light conditions) I will not reference it often due to its size. The print is tiny and hard to read and the photographs would have been splendid in a larger book. For the budget minded, this book is really worth it.
A great plant reference for all levels........1999-03-29
This is a great book for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike. Nice photos, good explanations, descriptions, and care instructions for common and uncommon plants you might encounter. A very handy reference that you will certainly get much use out of.

Book Description
Weeds have been associated with mankind throughout the history of civilization, and humans, by the nature of their travel, have transported with them whole floras. Many of Kentucky's weeds are immigrants that came to the New World from the Old and were brought to Kentucky by travelers, explorers, and settlers.
Because of its central location and geographical diversity, Kentucky is home today to perhaps the richest diversity of non-native plants east of the Rocky Mountains, and weeds make up a large component of the state's flora and vegetation.
Weeds of Kentucky and Adjacent States is a beautifully illustrated, easy-to-use guide to the identification of 160 weeds commonly found in crops, pastures, and turf, and along roadsides. Ecological, geographical, and ethnobotanical information is provided with each species description. This guide is the most extensive reference on weeds in the botanically unique area. A must for agriculturalists, naturalists, and botanists.
Customer Reviews:
LOTS OF WEEDS.......2000-04-06
I DID NOT REALIZE THAT THERE ARE SO MANY WEEDS. THIS BOOK IS GREAT FOR ANYONE THAT HAS A VEG. GARDEN OR FLOWER GARDEN. I HAVE SEEN SOME OF THESE IN MY BACK YARD, AND JUST DIDN'T KNOW THE NAMES OF THEM. I BELIEVE THIS IS A GOOD BOOK FOR SCHOOLS TO HAVE IF THEY DON'T ALREADY. I WOULD THINK THAT THE FULTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA (FFA) WOULD BENIFIT THE FROM THIS BOOK. FARMERS WOULD SEE THESE PLANTS IN THERE FIELDS.

A Very Good Introduction to an Important but Little-Known Topic.......2007-09-20
The most famous Roman mosaics are probably those of Pompeii and Herculaneum; in the Roman Empire at large, the mosaics of the Byzantine Empire and Near East (e.g., modern-day Syria) come to mind. However, the the artistic and cultural influences of Rome and the Near East extend to the western reaches of the Empire as well. In face, the cover photograph of the magnificent Orpheus Mosaic at Littlecote Park (Wiltshire) well illustrates these Near Eastern influences.
As with other titles in the venerable Shire Archaeology series, this book offers the general reader a short but reasonably detailed introduction to the many beautiful mosaics that have been found and preserved in England. Author Peter Johnson starts out with the design and construction of mosaics, as well as the materials used. Subsequent chapters discuss the First Century beginnings, Second Century expansion, Third Century collapse, and Fourth Century revival (when many villas were decorated with beautifully crafted mosaics), followed by a listing of important collections of or individual mosaics throughout Britain.
As an introduction to the subject of Romano-British mosaics, Dr. Johnson does a remarkable job in just highly readable 64 pages. Anyone wishing to find further information might wish to consult one of the more detailed books on the subject, most notably "Roman Mosaics in Britain" by David S. Neal Roman Mosaics in Britain, or the works of Patricia Witts Mosaics in Roman Britain: Stories in Stone (Revealing History), Margaret Rule Floor Mosaics in Roman Britain, or Anne Rainey Mosaics in Roman Britain.

Sociological.......2006-05-14
This book gives an interpretation first hand of what life for the aboriginies was like under the pressure of white society. Also, it tells its readers about the Aboriginies' explainations for how the world was created and what different things like the Southern Cross are. Have some respect.
This book was very informative yet interesting.......1999-05-17
I didn't like how it was so vivid in discribing the rituals of the dreamtime it was not for weak tummies.
