Many places provide special programs for families and all the trappings of a classic dude ranch experiece--chuckwagon meals, campfire singalongs, etc.--and many are full-service resorts offering other outdoor activities, such as hiking and cross-country skiing. Whether visitors want to soak in a hot tub and enjoy fine dining after half day of trail riding or have a hard core cattle roundup experience, this book will direct them to the best establishments in all regions of the United States and Canada.
Customer Reviews:
A truly first-rate and highly recommended guide.......2004-04-05
Expertly written by Gavin Ehringer (an award-winning columnist and features writer for "Western Horseman", among several other equine magazines), 100 Best Ranch Vacations In North America is an impressive guide to one hundred different guest ranches and packed with all the information one needs to know about selecting just the right ranch for particular budgets and tastes. Descriptions of the types of riding offered, details on ranch atmosphere and activities, profiles of typical guests, and a great deal more make 100 Best Ranch Vacations In North America a truly first-rate and highly recommended guide for anyone interested in experiencing an authentic taste of the Old West.
Just What You Need to Pick a Vacation, Pardner.......2004-02-19
By Bill Marsano. The lure of the Old West and the Open Range is as powerful for those who want to get back in the saddle again as for those who have never so much as fallen off a horse in the first place. And so the dude ranch was born--a place where city slickers could go to grow saddle-sore and be laughed at, made mock by the few genuine cowboys--sorry, that should be "hands"--still on the ranch. Or spread. Well, that was then. Dude ranches have grown up so much that few use the term any more. These days what we have are ranch vacations.
They're not all the same, and to tell them apart you need a guide like this, which covers 100 ranches in 19 states (including, oddly enough, New York) and two Canadian provinces. Now most anybody can fling together a lot of data--phone numbers, addresses, rates, etc.--but Gavin Ehringer has done a better and more complete job than most (in one entry he notes that a ranch accepts Visa but actually prefers personal checks). Ehringer gives a lot more. Each ranch is introduced by a one-page essay that captures the spirit of the place and helps you tell one from another. Do you want a family vacation, kids and all? A place where you break most of your broncos poolside? Or a real, tall-in-the-saddle spread that will make you earn your memories with a few blisters and sore muscles? Ehgringer helps you sort that out.
And if that's not enough, there's a beautifully shot photo essay of vacation-ranch life that will have you humming "Don't Fence Me In" in no time.--Bill Marsano is an award-winning travel writer.
Book Description

If Jane's is the Who's Who, this is the What's That?.......2003-06-19
This is a great book at the price, if only for the photographs. But this is more than just a freak show--the author approaches the material topically, showing how an outlandish idea might eventually come of age (the flying wing), might be a flash in the pan (the early multiplanes), or might keep turning up like a bad penny (the parasite fighter concept). Other topics include gigantism in passenger planes, the quest for speed in racers, WWII experimental planes (some incredibly ahead of their time, some just incredible), lifting-bodies, the X-planes, tilt-rotors, VTOLs, jet flying boats, and planes built for oversize cargo. A fun read with great photographs not found in most aircraft histories.

Customer Reviews:
A+++ Reference Book...and fun to read!.......1999-05-18
I've used the Samuelian book countless times as a reference when purchasing lamps for my business. All lamps are easily located by company name, or subject of the lamp. Prices are accurate, information is A+++, care and repair section is outstanding, and the photos make for quick and easy identification. I recommend this book to my customers and I can to you as well.
Finally an informative book on a long, overlooked subject!.......1999-04-15
My interest in Motion Lamps was aroused when I saw one in a movie several years ago. I searched in vain to find any information on what they were or where to find them. I finally came upon the Montgomery Book on Motion Lamps which was a start; at least I knew what I was looking for. I took the book around to antique stores and flea markets only to hear "oh yeah, I had a few of those once but we don't see them to often." I live in the mid west region where it just seems that motion lamps are very elusive. With a bit of looking through ads for collectables in magazines I was able to find a few people who knew about and sold these lamps. I was able to purchase a few lamps here and there, but I never realized just how many different lamps existed, or what they looked like until this book was published. It seems that there were just a small "cult" of serious collectors and very little knowlege available to the "masses"; this book changes that. The text, pictures, and motion description of each lamp are excellent. I think that experienced, knowlegable collectors should find this book interesting; for the other 95% of the world, INCREDIBLE! I would like to thank the authors for sharing their "secret" with the rest of us,and for taking the time and effort obviously required to produce this book!!
Professional Reviews of Collector's Guide to Motion Lamp.......1999-04-15
As the proud parents of the authors, we wanted to share reviews we have saved from recent publications. All are complete as released and unedited. They are below: From the Antique Trader, a leader in the field of collectibles publications: "They are fun, quirky, novel and collectible; they are motion lamps and this book is a tribute and resource that novice and experienced lamp collectors will want to add to their own libraries. The authors focus on lamp scenes in motion caused by heat from a light bulb as opposed to motion created by a motor (the subject for another book, they say). More than 500 colorful lamps are evaluated and discussed. Sam and Anna Samuelian also provide invaluable advice about maintaining, troubleshooting, collecting, and repairing these appealing lamps." From The Old Times: "We're familiar with the cylinder type motion lamps...who isn't? But we weren't aware of the many types unearthed by the Samuelians, collectors and purveyors of "motion sickness". Besides the rotating cylinders with waterfalls and smoky fires and such--the kind we remember from Grandma's house--there are flat "picture frame" lamps, little carousels, revolving Christmas trees, facsimiles of little fireplaces and campfires, pagodas and Christmas ornaments that spin when lighted, psychedelic and op art brain-twisters, and a big variety of advertising gimickry. This survey is organized by manufacturer, primarily, but there are separate sections on psychedelia and advertising lamps. There's also a long chapter on repair and restoration, and even a chapter on making your own motion lamp. The photographs mostly do justice to these colorful lamps, and make the book fun to browse. Since these lamps are getting awfully hard to find, this book will provide collectors a "fix" until the next one comes along. This is a much-needed book for lighting buffs, since the last book on this subject from L-W is now out of print." From AntiqueWeek: "Color photos are the emphasis of this book, making it useful as a picture price guide. However, captions provide interesting details that go beyond just providing a value. Readers will also find several pages of background information on the topic." Finally, from Bookwatch: "Collectors of motion lamps will relish Sam and Anna Samuelian's "Collector's Guide to Motion Lamps", packed with color photos of the lamps and spiced with identification tips and current values. It's the clear, small photos which make the book so simple to use." If anyone out there can send us other reviews, we welcome them. Email us at arpsam@webtv.net. Thanks!
Exceptional quality, exquisite photos, lots of information.......1999-04-14
This book is a must for collectors! Not only is this book fun to read but it is informative as well. As a collector of motion lamps myself, this book has proved over and over again to be an invaluable resource for both my collection and my business. The photography is exquisite and the information that is contained in this book is not available anywhere else. It is obvious that the Samuelians have expended an extraordinary effort in producing this book and it sure shows!!!! This is a large sized book and is a real bargain. This would make a great gift for any collector, dealer, or just a person who likes anything fun! This book is one of the best collector books around and is tops on my list. I can't wait until their next book!
Cute book, not very informative.......1999-01-14
While I enjoyed the idea of a book dedicated solely to motion lamps, of which I am an avid collector, I found the book to be somewhat childish in content. I didn't learn anything I didn't know about the lamps already. If you want to look at some pictures, and like to buy every possible book about antiques you can get your hands on, then the book may be a good purchase for you.
If not, look elsewhere.
Book Description
Climate change, the need to conserve water, the desire for more exotic and dramatic plants — all of these are prompting gardeners to seek out interesting new plants that thrive in subtropical or dry climates and microclimates. This book offers expert guidance and sensible advice on a wide range of plants — native to California, Florida, Australasia, South America, South Africa, Turkey, and the Mediterranean region — that can be successfully cultivated in many regions of North America and Europe. A general introduction offers advice on choosing and designing with these plants, with particular emphasis on hardiness and overwintering in cooler climates. An A–Z plant directory profiles over 1000 plants, and there are useful lists of plants for different situations.
Customer Reviews:
Let's garden the mediterranean way and more........2007-01-12
In this book you can find a large selection of all purpose plants, for subtropical (Mediterranean in my case) garden, presented in good quality photos. If someone is looking for new plants for his subtropical garden or wants to create its own, this is a good option. The only problem i find, is that the descriptions of the growing tips of each species are quite brief, and sometimes is necessary to search in another placer for more information.
Very Informative.......2006-12-29
This book is fabulous! Martyn has detailed descriptions on cultivation, watering & hardiness. Not to mention the beautiful photographs of over 700 plants. This book is a must for anyone who loves to 'surround oneself with beauty in their garden'
Very good resource.......2006-11-10
Fantastic book--Rix begins the book by summarizing the various subtropical climates and their characteristics. He then lists plants according to a logic that is not hard to follow (e.g. succulents, trees of the fabacae, cool climate orchids, etc). He notes the climatalogical preferences of the plants (e.g. warm wet summer, dry cool winter)--which is very helpful, as well as water and USDA zones (this could be more specific).
He includes some not too obvious genera / species and peppers the book with lusciuos photographs.
For me the merits of the book are: a. its discussion of different sub-tropical climates b. its inclusion of less-than-garden variety / "exotic" species c. its beautiful photography.
The downside is that not more species / cultivars are included--but this is something remedied by a more quotidian companion book (e.g. sunset western garden book).
Book Description
Illustrated with 200 color photos, this book offers practical guidance to gardening with the increasingly popular subtropical and tropical plants. The authors describe and provide cultivation information for a wide selection of plants, including palms, orchids, cacti, and bromeliads.

100 Ways For A Dog To Train Its Human.......2005-03-28
I was given this book as a Christmas present last year. It's a non-serious, tongue in cheek book written from the perspective of the family dog. This in no way is meant to be a serious insight into a dogs mind, nor a training tool. It will cause dog owners a chuckle as they recognise errant patterns of behaviour in their own dog - and the seemingly cunning reasons behind the pooch's actions.
