    Book Description

INTRODUCTION Andalucía is the southernmost territory of Spain and the part of the Iberian peninsula that is most quintessentially Spanish. The popular image of Spain as a land of bullfights, flamenco, sherry and ruined castles derives from this spectacularly beautiful region. The influences that have washed over Andalucía since the first paintings were etched on cave walls here more than twenty-five thousand years ago are many - Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Vandals all came and left their mark. And the most influential invaders of all, the Moors, who ruled the region for seven centuries and named it al-Andalus, have left an enduring imprint on Andalucian culture and customs.

The heartland of Andalucía is the fertile valley of the mighty Río Guadalquivir, flowing across the region from its source in the Cazorla mountains in the northeast through the magnificent cities of Córdoba and Sevilla, before draining into the marshes and wetlands of the Doñana national park and the Gulf of Cádiz. North of this great artery rise the undulating hills of the Sierra Morena, from where was gouged the mineral wealth - silver, lead and tin - sought by successive waves of invaders from Phoenicians to Romans. The Moors, who arrived in the eighth century, were more interested in harvesting Andalucía's natural wealth and turned the region into an orchard rich in olives, citrus fruits, almonds, saffron, figs and vines - still the major products of the land today. In 1492 the Christian reconquest, after centuries of struggle, finally succeeded in wresting Spain from its Moorish occupiers, the victors symbolically planting their flags on the towers of the Alhambra, the emblematic monument of Andalucía.

The Moorish legacy is the most striking feature of Andalucía today, not only in the dazzling historical monuments such as those of Sevilla, Córdoba and Granada but also in the whitewashed houses of many of its smaller medieval towns such as Ronda or the flat-roofed villages of Las Alpujarras. The Moorish love of water is to be seen in the pleasure gardens of the Alhambra, and the typical Andalucian patio - tiled plant-bedecked courtyards often with a central fountain - is another Arab legacy as are the ubiquitous wrought-iron window grilles which lend character to any village street. The dances and music of flamenco, whilst probably not of Moorish origin, display the soul of Andalucía and can be an electrifying spectacle when dancers in brilliantly coloured dresses drill their heels into the floorboards in a frenzy of emotion or, in cante jondo (deep song), turn the art form into a blues-style lament. The Muslim influence on speech and vocabulary, a stoical fatalism in the face of adversity, and an obsession with the drama of death - publicly displayed in the spectacle of the bullfight - are also facets of the modern Andalucian character. Contrastingly, the andaluzes also love nothing more than a party, and the colour and sheer energy of the region's countless and legendary fiestas - always in traditional flamenco costume worn with pride - make them among the most exciting in the world. The romerías, wild and semi-religious pilgrimages to honour local saints at country shrines, are yet another excuse for a jamboree.

Despite the region's abundant natural wealth poverty is widespread, a legacy of the repressive latifundia landholding system of large estates with absentee landlords. The Christian monarchs who ousted the Moorish farmers doled out the conquered land to the Church, the military orders and individual nobles. These new proprietors often had little interest in the land nor personal contact with those who worked their estates, often leaving an overseer in charge, and an atmosphere of resentment built up towards the wretched pay and miserable conditions that this system entailed. It is perhaps not surprising that many inhabitants emigrated to find work in northern Spain or abroad or that anarchism found many converts among the desperate braceros (farmhands) of Andalucía before the Spanish Civil War. Two percent of the landowners still possess fifty percent of the land today, and in the 1960s alone a million Andalucians left their native region to seek a better life elsewhere.

Whilst life for many in the countryside remains hard, new industries, particularly tourism, have had a major impact on the region's economy. Apart from the petrochemical industry around Algeciras, mining in Huelva and aircraft manufacture in Sevilla, Andalucía has little heavy industry and those not employed in agriculture are usually working in fishing or tourism. One growth industry of recent years is servicing the population of mainly northern European emigrants who have come to the south of Spain to live, retire or do business. Now numbering a third of a million these expatriates have funded much building and development particularly along the coastal strip of the Costa del Sol, earning this zone its new nickname, the "California of Spain".

    3 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed.......2007-05-11

After just spending 10 days in Andalucia, I have to say that I wished I had gotten the Lonely Planet guide. This one just did not have enough truly useful information to justify its considerable weight. For example, it would say "a bus takes you from the train station into town," but did not tell you the number of the line. Or it would say "there's a lively market on thursdays on c/ borroso" in Sevilla, but it did not give you any orientation as to where "c/ borroso" was in the city or on a map...and do you know how many tiny streets there are in Sevilla? Also, while it gave numerous restaurant reviews, it did not give them relative cost ratings (e.g. $, $$, $$$). This would have been really helpful, as I often would seek out a restaurant only to find it out of my price range.

That said, if you're not planning on getting audioguides at the historical sites and have time to read the descriptions, you will undoubtedly get more out of this book than I did. And when they had the necessary details, their recommendations of things to do were spot-on.

After browsing through other travelers' Lonely Planets, I think those guides are arranged much more intuitively.

    5 out of 5 stars Top this........2006-12-08

This high-quality guide is 50% thicker than the Lonely Planet guide to Andalucia, yet it's not too big or heavy for a light packer. (But I wouldn't want one any heavier than this.) There's no filler; it's dense with practical information.

The "Let's Go" guides are written by undergrads and have excellent lists of accommodations and eats, but the rest of it tends to be immature and alarmist purple prose. (I'll never forget this comment on Morocco: "But be careful, camels have been known to carry syphilis." OK, how many people do you know that have caught syphilis from a camel?!) I call it "Let's Not Go" because they always try to scare you. Other travelers I've met had similar comments and once upon a train ride we had some laughs swapping ridiculous citations.

Rick Steves is just too political for me. His "guides" read like tiresome negative campaign commercials or anti-American polemics.

This guide is about Andalucia. It starts off with a section called "34 Things Not To Miss" with a nice color photo of each, includes a good index, clear and legible maps, and a section on Gibraltar. All the opening/closing times were accurate for the places I went. Those who enjoy intelligent historical and background commentary will like this.

There's no logistical info on Madrid but that's OK: those who land there can go to the prominent "i" booth in Barajas airport or Atocha (the main train station) for free maps and friendly information in English.

Accommodation prices are absent because they vary by season, but good values are pointed out. The money section should warn about the blue "EXACT Transfer" exchange booths in train stations which charge exorbitant fees (like 25%!) and refuse to cancel the transaction once they have your money. (They display different rates for three amount ranges, but charge the highest rate regardless of your amount; it would be a crime in most places.) Note that prices on everything have skyrocketed since the advent of the Euro: the Ave ("AHH-vay") fast train between Madrid and Sevilla cost 70 Euros each way (!) and taxi fares were what I would expect to pay in the U.S. (Tapas is still a deal.) I also suggest a free glance at the State Department's consular information sheet online --your tax dollars at work.

4 out of 5 stars Great overall resource.......2005-11-16

I found this book extremely helpful, if a bit bulky. One shortcoming is that the book does not include prices for the accommodation it recommends. Prices are always helpful if you're traveling on a budget; even though they become outdated quickly, they at least give you an idea.

Including the frequency of bus and train routes was very helpful, but they should also include web sites to check current schedules.

    I do recommend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for the Andalucian-bound!!!.......2004-07-19

Keeping in the tradition of the insight, clarity, and usefulness which has made Rough Guide among the best of guide book series, the Rough Guide to Andalucia is the definitive book for any tourist interested in visitng that region.

Uncluttered, with honest facts AND opinions about where to eat, landmarks, hotels, hostels, and more, the Rough Guide is peerless in it's thorough usefulness.

This book does an excellent job of presenting more than your usual tourist traps. Special needs travelers (pets, children, handicapped) can also get a sense of what may and may not be good ideas for your Andalucian odyssey.

All in all, if you're looking for a guide book that presents what you NEED to know without a lot of editorial musings, you will find the Rough Guide to Andalucia not only at the forefront of this genre, but without competition when it comes to giving you all things the "non-touristy tourist" wants to know.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Guide.......2003-11-07

Fantastic resource for the Andalucian paradise! We travelled to Spain with other guides, purchased this one on Gibralter and weren't without it the rest of the visit! We also travelled with a 6 month old, great recommendations for sites and out of the way not- touristy spots. Roman ruins listed in here are incredible and would have been missed if using any other guide.

2 out of 5 stars As good as I expected........2007-09-23

It's no secret that Titanic: The Long Night has been one of my favorite books since I was young. When I found that there was a sequel, I was a little wary of approaching it, because I didn't feel that Diane Hoh would be able to add on to (in my opinion) an already complete story.

    I wasn't wrong.

Yes, we got to see how each of the original four (Elizabeth, Max, Katie, and Paddy) managed after the disaster and how they started over, but I feel that none of it was really necessary, especially after an Epilogue had already been included in the previous book. And I felt that part of the reason that so many liked the first book was because, as intertwined as their lives were, Elizabeth and Katie never actually spoke to one another. So, when it happened in this book, I felt that it was very anticlimactic and unnecessary.

All in all, even though I purchased this book at a discounted price, I don't feel that it was worth it.

    4 out of 5 stars READ IT!!.......2005-01-25

THough the first book ("Titanic: THe Long NIght") is better, this book is still worth your while, and would definately be one to look into. If you, like me, have precious little reading time, dont worry, its not a waste of time. I read this book in like 6th grade, and am now 15 and very dismayed becayse i cant seem to find it in any bookstores!!!**gasp of horror** I have the first book, and its one of my favorites. If only the movie "Titanic" was as good as these books are....

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to the first.......2004-01-12

You might not expect a sequel to a Titanic book to be a successfull read..but it is! After reading the first, I wanted more and this book left me very content after reading it!
"Remembering the Titanic" begins at a memorial service a year after the sinking and the 4 characters are still struggeling with that night.
Elizabeth is struggeling to regain her independance. Binded by her promise to her father, she has a hard time being able to leave her mother and go to college. Max is losing patience with her, but is also struggeling with his own memories of the sinking.
Katie develops her singing career, but Paddy is becoming distant and desolate, wondering why he survived and not his brother.
The only flaw is that Diane Hoh included an Epilouge in the first book, so we know that everything will turn out a certain way. But this book has its own plot, and there is more to find out.
In the first book I found the Max/Elizabeth romance more exciting that the Irish couple, but this book greatly developed the Katie/Paddy relationship-and I found them equally appealing to Elizabeth and Max. (especially in the last chapter-my favorite part of the book)
I liked the first book so much that it left me wanting more, and thats what I got with this book. I would still say the first book was better, but anyone who read the first book and fell in love with the characters like I did, must read this!

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Sequel.......2003-10-14

This sequal to Titanic: The Long Night hits all the right targets in moving on after a terrible disaster. Since there hasn't been a book on the aftermath of the disaster, this was completely new to me. I was able to read this thanks to my friend who happened to have it.
Summary: It's a year after the sinking. Elizabeth Farr has a constant chill to remind her of the disaster and she's also tiring of obeying her father's promise that she takes care of her mother after the disaster. Max Whittaker is now living on his own as an artist, but he is losing patience with Elizabeth since she is now spending more time with her mother and alomost no time with him. Katie Hanrahan is living her dream of being a singer and is becoming popular with the rich. Paddy Kelleher is given a job to write a book on his experiences of the sinking, but he can't help thinking of how he could've possibly saved his brother's life. As the story goes on, Elizabeth, given determination by Max, is set to go to college, but her mother will do anything to keep her daughter by her side, and she soon stoops so low that Elizabeth is soon fears for her and puts Elizabeth's and Max's relationship in jeopardy. Elizabeth also thinks that Max has moved on, but when she sees his shocking new paintings, she realizes he hasn't put the disaster behind him as well. Meanwhile, Katie is angry at Paddy for spending more time with publishers rather than with her and when she sees Paddy talking with another girl, she no longer wants to see him. Two things to look forward to in this book: Elizabeth and Katie meet face to face, and a fire puts one of the charactor's life on the line. Exciting! Reaction: This book is too short, about half the size of its prequel, otherwise this book is amazing! Its unpredictability will make you hold on to it until it ends. Something worth buying. If you can find it!

    5 out of 5 stars sequel.......2003-03-08

this books just tells the story of how they have to put their lives back together after the tragedy. it is hard for all of them to tell their feelings to the person they love and that creates anger and resentment in them. it shows their blossoming or not blossoming careers in America and in Katie, a longing for Ireland. i think this book is a great sequel to the first one, which is prolly one of my favorite books, and i seriously wish she would write another book. recommended for anyone!

      Book Description

This profusely illustrated book is the first full-length study of the Canadian-born sculptor David Rabinowitch. Working in New York since 1972 and extensively in Europe since the early 1980s, Rabinowitch became Professor of Sculpture at the Staatliche Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, in 1984. Whitney Davis closely analyzes six groups of works produced by Rabinowitch between 1963 and the present, comparing their rigorous constructivism with the "minimalism" of American sculptors such as Donald Judd. Davis also explores Rabinowitch's relations to the work of modern painters and sculptors from Cézanne to David Smith, and his involvement with the wider history of art.

This book is pure joy. For those of us who have loved our dogs, the stories tug at your heart strings. Karen Derrico captures each dog's story with a peek into other dog owner's heart and how much they loved their special friend. Thank you for writing a book that has been so long in coming, and so beautifully written. This one is a must for dog lovers, pet lovers, and anyone who has ever had that special bond with their pet.

5 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All.......1999-12-09

The title of this book truly says it all. These dogs are unforgettable. The best thing about this book is the memories it brought back to me of my childhood friend and mutt, Pokey. Since adulthood, I have always owned fullbred dogs, one rescued from a shelter, but still not the adorable mutt. After reading this book, I think of all of the love and devotion Pokey gave my family, and I am proud to say that she was a mutt. For those who own mutts, read the book and celebrate their uniqueness. For those who own pedigrees, read it anyway. It is full with stories of the love and joy only a dog can give. My only criticism is that it is too short. I could have read 100 more stories.

5 out of 5 stars The book is unique, as are the mutts celebrated within it.......1999-08-04

What a book! What a book! What a book! A tribute to the "mutt"-- God's precious gift to us humans! Their love, intelligence, courage, loyalty ; their precious souls, are a shining tribute to the canine kingdom and to our Father's loving creation. So many times a mutt is a combination of the best of each breed.

The stories in this book are a celebration of these wonderful animals and their relationship to those of us humans who have been lucky enough to share one-- or more. Hopefully this book will inspire many people to adopt from animal shelters.

This reviewer has had the joy of four wonderful, dear small mutts, mainly mixed terrier. They are now in Heaven, and the pain of separation cuts deeply.

But in spite of the hurt of this separation, I know that we will be together again when it is my turn to "cross over".

I would like to share with you my recommendation of three books, all of which can do a great deal to assuage the grief one feels at losing a beloved pet/companion/"child":

The first is The Soul of Your Pet-- this book gives solid, credible evidence of animal afterlife; there are many stories of people's interactions with pets that have passed on; many cannot be "explained away"; an example would be of a vet that is called on to treat a sick horse and sees a ghost horse near it- formerly owned by the people who call her out. She has never been there before. Hardly a "grief-induced hallucination" as the owner don't even see it. They recognize it when the vet describes it to them. A mother and daughter are with their cats in a room; their former pet walks in through the wall; both women see it and the living cats chase it out of the room. The recountings in the book are happy ones; the people are brought great comfort by seeing (hearing or feeling) again their departed pets. It is virtually impossible to be skeptical after reading several of these incidents. The idea of animals having souls is backed up biblically, as well.

The second book, For Every Dog an Angel, will melt your heart. Although written for children it is for everyone. The author wrote it after losing her "forever dog", Martha; she has had experiences that would fit with the above-mentioned Pet Souls book.

When a puppy is born we are told an angel comes to be with it throughout its life; when it bonds with its "forever person" it brings the angel much joy; when it is time for it to go to the "Other Side" its angel becomes its bridge. Sometimes it crosses back over the angel bridge to visit; the child is told to listen for pawsteps when going for a walk, or look for covers rumpling on the bed; the children love it! Finally, when it is our turn to "cross over" our forever pet is waiting to greet us and there is a joyeous reunion. I will not likely tire of re-reading its charmingly-illustrated 32 pages, and I'll bet you won't, either! If your child has lost a pet-- or is likely to--please get this book!

The third book, Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates is a Christian book, wonderfully done; it is truly inspired.

Unforgettable Mutts will bring much pleasure to its readers and will touch the heart deeply; the other three books will bring much comfort and happy anticipation.

A few years ago, there was practically nothing to help those of us grieving over pet loss; now we are finally beginning to get what we need; understanding of how deeply-bonded we can become to our canine (and other companion animal) friends.

Heartfelt Stories About Beanie Babies and Those Who Collect Them

Heartfelt Stories warms the hearts and souls of its readers. It's a "collection" of stories from "collectors" of beanie babies, people young and old from all walks of life, who help remind us through their tales that it is the small things that come in little packages that have a biggest impact on peoples' quality of life. Some stories are sad, some are funny, some are nail biting, some are hip, some are quirky, all are inspirational. It's a true page-turner, one to enjoy during the comfort of your own private time or to share with your children as bedtime stories.

What I really loved about this book too is that it illustrates how beanie babies became the phenomenon that they are today and will be for years to come. It amazed me when I'd be driving past a store that was expecting a shipment of beanie babies and there'd be a line a mile long of people waiting to be the first inside. I don't have children of my own so I never had the occasion to purchase a beanie baby. Or so I thought. After read ing Heartfelt Stories, I came to understand why people love them so much. The good news is I may not have beanie babies, but I have Heartfelt Stories, so in some way, I feel connected to the phenomenon and to the magic.

I hope Pamela Knapp writes a second edition. I'd ask to be a contributor this time. I'd tell her about the time I was coming home from a business trip and my flight was delayed for three hours. I sat in the gate next to these two little sisters who filled their world for three hours playing with their beanie babies. That was two years before Heartfelt Stories came out. But I remember at that time wishing I was young again and being so creative. See, beanie babies do that to you. They pull at your heartstrings and make you reflect why it's so great to be alive.

The ubiquitous For Dummies series, while not known for pretty illustrations or lush photography, does manage to pack the maximum amount of information into an easy-to-read format--something that gardeners with an eye on the financial bottom line love. For vegetable gardeners, the right information is especially important, because if you don't end up with edible food on the table, you've failed. Charlie Nardozzi and the National Gardening Association editors seem comfortingly aware of this fact, but they also want to make vegetable gardening fun and interesting, and to that end there's a lot more here than just the standard tomatoes and zucchini. Bok choy, fingerling potatoes, kabocha squash, daikon radishes--they've included just about every vegetable you might be able to think of, with pithy recommendations of the tastiest and easiest-to-grow varieties.

The book's first three chapters deal with deciding what to plant, where to plant it, and when. Nardozzi then turns the bulk of the book--nine chapters--over to the vegetables themselves: the tomato (the most popular vegetable for the home gardener); the pepper and eggplant; root crops; legumes; vine crops; cole crops, such as broccoli and cabbage; greens; and sweet corn and unusual vegetables. A special chapter goes to nonvegetables like herbs and berries. The book's third section is devoted to gardening techniques, which more experienced gardeners may want to turn to immediately. There's good, solid information here on irrigation, mulching, reading a fertilizer label, companion and secession planting, and much more. As with all For Dummies titles, the resources listed in the appendix are comprehensive and up to date, and the index (without which any reader might be lost) is complete and useful.

A comprehensive guide to the art of belly dancing

            • Covers the origins, mythology, and history of the Middle Eastern dance, including its physical and mental health benefits

            • Contains practical instructions with easy-to-follow photographs

            • Includes recipes for perfumes, cosmetic creams, and food from the Middle East

Belly dance is pure sensuousness and has enchanted humans since ancient times. Yet beyond its erotic aspects, belly dancing offers many physical and emotional benefits. On the physical level it helps with muscle stiffness, autonomic nervous system disturbances, mobility of the abdominal region, and strengthening the back, which in turn enhances the body’s overall posture. Belly dancing also relieves menstrual problems and has been shown to be extremely useful during pregnancy and childbirth. On the emotional side belly dancing increases the libido and has enabled women to overcome self-esteem issues and regain healthy feelings of sensuality and sexuality.Belly Dancing covers all aspects of this ancient art, beginning with its origins and mythical connections to the moon goddess. The authors provide practical instructions and easy-to-follow photographs for the most important dance movements as well as guidance in costuming and related accoutrements. Additional information on foot reflexology and Indian chakras aid the further understanding of the art. The book also contains recipes for Middle Eastern perfumes, cosmetic creams, and food as well as suggestions for musical accompaniment.

The author and their publishing/public relations people, whoever, needed to have re-thought this choice of review. I wonder how many people are turned away by it. I for one am. Are the Bellydance Superstars skinny little sticks??? -- Excuse me if I don't understand the specific dimensions of what constitutes a stick. I think I'll try another bellydance book.

1 out of 5 stars wouldnt buy it either.......2006-11-17

            Your friend Tom.
i agree with holly. the review of a book is chosen by the author or publisher to represent the contents of a book. choosing an offensive critique of women in general as either "skinny little stick women" or "regular women" does say a lot about the contents of the book or it shouldnt of been chosen. i think its disgusting. reviews are listed by authors and publishers to represent the contents of a book, period. toned and fit women are attractive as belly dancers as watching the body and muscles moving is more interesting than watching a bowl of jello bouncing. describing overweight women as regular only enforces are cultures chronic obesity and all the associtated health problems as diabetis and heart disease etc. this isnt at all necessary and very offensive.

            1 out of 5 stars Boo!.......2006-02-13

I was looking for a nice book on bellydance, but just from the review, I can tell this isn't a very nice book. According to the review: "Skinny little stick women look funny doing this dance but regular sized women suddenly look graceful, elegant, and confidently sexy."

So I guess only the minority of women who are "regular size" can do this dance. That leaves out the 60 percent of American's who are overweight and whatever percentage are underweight. Or if "regular" means overweight here, then that leaves out the 40 percent who aren't.

Whatever it is, it's not nice to be dissing women that way! Bellydance is a dance for women by women and should be supportive of ALL women, not critical like that. There's enough of that out there already!

And, by the way, Rachel Brice could be described as one of those skinny stick women and she looks AWESOME and is an amazing dancer. The same could be said for Sonia (from Sonia and Issam Bellydance: The Art of the Drum Solo) and Adore, currently touring with Bellydance Superstars.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant taster of oriental dance!.......2005-06-11

Belly Dancing: The Sensual Art of Energy and Spirit by P. Coluccia, A. Paffrath and J. Putz: While still wondering, should I try oriental dance perhaps? ... I came across this book, and I found it a very encouraging and easy-to-understand introduction for beginners or those who consider taking up belly dance. It gives you a lot of background and history and has great photos. There are very interesting chapters on oriental dance for children, and how it can be helpful for women with painful periods. Next, the movements are explained and illustrated with photos so that even a complete beginner can try them with some success! But the book doesn't stop there, it also has interesting chapters on Eastern music, scents and, yummy!, some great recipes. The book certainly won't replace a good class, but if you want a taster of oriental dance, why not start here! It certainly got me started.

5 out of 5 stars A clear examination of belly dance routines and meaning.......2005-06-08

How can a book possibly describe belly dancing? If you think it just can't be done, turn to Belly Dancing: The Sensual Art Of Energy And Spirit by Pina Coluccia, Anette Paffrath and Jean Putz to see just how the dance can be embodied into a book form. A history of belly dance moves from artistic and spiritual insights to physical movement, with chapters focusing on both health benefits and routines. Chapters covering the basic stances and their meanings are also included. Beginners will welcome this clear examination of belly dance routines and meaning.

This book was about the life of a hero, Martin Luther King, Jr. It tells us how he served his community. There were interesting pictures. Our fifth grade class learned a lot about African-American history through this book.

4 out of 5 stars I very much enjoyed this factual book.......1997-12-12

I feel that this book was written very thoroughly. It included indepth facts that really let the reader know what happened. This book was obviously researched heavily, and I congradulate the author on writing such a magnificent book. Although it was not really my choice in reading this book, I am glad that I had, for it has greatly enhanced my knowledge of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. I, being a fifteen year old sophomore student of Penn High School, find this a great book to use in researching Dr. King's past events, assassination, murder(s), and conspiracy theories. It was well written, and could be easily understood by young readers. I would highly recommend this book to readers of all ages. -Thank You
