A comprehensive guide to snakes in the western region of North America.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A first-rate reference and field guide.......2003-03-04

The collaborative effort of veteran herpetologist and herpetoculturist R. D. Bartlett and writer, wildlife lecturer, wilderness guide, and herpetologist Alan Tennant, Snakes Of North America: Western Region is a comprehensive guide to the wide variety of snake species found in the western region of North America. Enhanced with 186 full-color photographs, maps of habitat and range, abundance, size, venom status, prey, and behavior of species, and much, much more, Snakes Of North America: Western Region is confidently recommended as being a first-rate reference and field guide filled from cover to cover with the collective wisdom of two experienced herpetological professionals.

3 out of 5 stars Not as strong as its eastern/central counterpart.......2001-08-29

Together with its companion volume, Snakes of North America: Eastern and Central Regions, this book provides a complete reference to snakes north of the U.S.-Mexico border. It is the weaker of the two volumes, however. It is slimmer, less detailed and lacks the eastern/central volume's bibliography and glossary. It covers snakes on a species-by-species basis (rather than by subspecies, which is the case in the eastern/central volume), which leaves most subspecies with a paragraph of description at most. (Are western subspecies less well-defined than eastern subspecies?) The difference probably results from the fact that the eastern/central book drew upon Tennant's earlier books on Florida and Texas snakes; this book did not have the same advantage. As well, errors in the book suggest that more careful editing was needed. At least one set of range maps was reversed, and there have been reports that some of the garter snake photos were mixed up. Accuracy in a field guide is essential; errors here can compound themselves down the road. Still worth having.

Download Description

Timeshare Vacations For Dummies is new guide to timeshare vacations for the 3 million North Americans who own timeshares around the world and the 210,000 (7%) more who buy them each year. There are 5,425 timeshare resorts in the world, 1,590 of them in the U.S. Timeshares are a natural subject for a Dummies book, because the process can be confusing, even threatening, and people need help steering safely through the shoals. The guide answers questions from both existing timeshare owners and those who are considering buying one; what are the smartest ways to buy and sell; are timeshares a wise investment; how do owners find the best swaps; which resorts and destinations offer the best deal for your money, interests and schedule, both domestically and abroad.

5 out of 5 stars Steve, Venice, Florida.......2007-09-06

It always fascinates me to see how interpretations of the same literature can vary so radically. I too have purchase and read this "Dummies" book. I must emphasize "Dummies" book. In my opinion, Ms Schreier has done exactly what you might expect. She has offered a basic, statistical observation of timeshare that is easily understood by the novice. Lots of information and a thorough explanation of pros and cons of the industry. In fact, I might also add that in my opinion, she has spoken from both sides of the table.....from the salesperson's perspective and equally so from the purchaser's perspective. Hats off to Lisa Anne....a job well done.....nothing boring or dry, just an honest quick reading piece of research that all should benefit from.

For those that are looking for a more in depth study on the subject, this may not be for you however for the rest of us this is a great read.

As for the fellow that seems to be promoting himself and boasting his 25 years of experience in the business....what can be said? Rather than telling publishers of your greatness and using this book as your platform as how not to do it, perhaps you should find a better source of promotion like direct contact and aggressiveness in that direction.

5 out of 5 stars A very good reference.......2007-08-23

This is a very good reference, although it is biased in favor of timeshares because the author sells timeshares. If anyone wants to learn about timeshares outside of a sales presentation, this is a good way to do it.

4 out of 5 stars A good book if you are thinking of purchasing or just curious about time shares.......2006-09-04

I thought some of reviews were harsh and unfair. This book is the best one on the market I could find on this somewhat confusing topic. In addition, the information on buying a time share from an individual (rather than the developer), or on e-bay is probably where the bargains are found. The author points out the wisdom and the pitfalls in trying to do this. The book has a web site from which the author answered some additonal questions that I wrote in to her. Timeshares are a close call from a financial standpoint in my own opinion, however time share units are typically better than a hotel, e.g. kitchen and other amenities.
If you are thinking of purchasing a time share, or just curious to learn more about it, I would recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars More of the same.......2006-07-08

When I discovered that this book was written by the same person who wrote "Surviving a Timeshare Presentation", I really knew I had been taken. This should be "Surviving a Book Sale", because both books are weak with substance and are written by someone who probably couldn't give it away as a sales person. Why do non-producers become Authors? One of the books had a sticker on the front that said "Personally autographed" and on the inside cover, she had scribbled "Lisa". Give me a break. If you want to learn about Timeshare, take a presentation with a reputable company and ask lots of questions. They will answer them for you and they will even do the math correctly when they show you the purchase options.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good primer for beginners.......2006-05-12

I found the book fairly informative and basic for those of us completely new to timeshare. I have to think some of the reviewers here never read this book, because the author indeed goes out of her way to reference informative webpages (including tug2.net mentioned here and others) for further information.

Did a good job of breaking down the "lingo" that I had a hard time slogging through online. A good place to start, but not the be-all and end-all if you really need to learn about time shares, but I don't think it was meant to be. But this book is certainly a good jumping-off place.

This is a pretty good read for the small amount invested. While none of the information is truly groundbreaking, there is still some useful data on breeding Rainbowfish that I have not found in more recent books covering the subject. This was put together by a Rainbowfish enthusiast who spent time living in Australia and New Guinea collecting the fish locally, so it goes without saying that he has some unique insight into the species.

Don't plan on getting a lot accomplished for the first week or so that this book is in your house. It may be a reference, but it behaves like a sponge, sucking up any and all attention you happen to cast its way. Take, for example, the chapter called "Botany for Gardeners." High-school biology was never this interesting. The chapter on "Plant Conservation," which includes sections on plant diversity as well as vanishing plants, is frightening. Ever think you would be frightened by a gardening text?

Reference, however, is the key word here--for this is a reference, and not a final word (should such a thing even exist). With chapters devoted to natural gardening, kitchen gardening, ornamental gardening, indoor and city gardening, and safe pest control, this monster-size book (and undertaking)--more than 800 pages--is the place to start looking for just about any kind of information on gardening and plants. It's the desk version of Think Globally, Act Locally in that it gives a fairly good idea of where to go to flesh out any information. One regret: the short shrift given mushrooms, whose only appearance is among poisonous plants. One can usually expect more of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden than this kind of backhand to the chops.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden couldn't be a better place to launch such a project as the Gardener's Desk Reference. It has been a pioneer in gardening publications for a century, and gardeners everywhere owe it a real debt. --Schuyler Ingle

        Book Description

The ultimate gardening reference work compiled by two dozen of the world's leading plant experts under the auspices of one of the world's greatest botanical gardens. Brooklyn Botanic Garden Gardener's Desk Reference is a milestone in garden publishing, the kind of groundbreaking work that appears once in a lifetime. No gardening reference--ever--has combined this scope of information in a single volume. The coverage in most gardening reference books falls into a few standard horticultural categories. The Gardener's Desk Reference unlocks the door to a vast assortment of plant knowledge from around the world. There is enough information in this single volume to serve any plant enthusiast--beginning and professional alike--over a lifetime. For easy use, the wide-ranging material is divided into twenty different sections--from "Botany for Gardeners" to "Kitchen Gardening" to "The Horticultural Traveler" to "Weights, Measures, and Conversions." The hundreds of indispensable sidebars, graphs, tables, plant lists, maps, and illustrations found throughout the reference make it even more accessible and attractive. To do justice to the continent's breathtaking diversity of climates and plant communities, all plant lists are organized by region, and every recommed species or cultivar has been chosen by an experienced landscaper tested by years of gardening in the area. Never before have gardeners had access to the breadth and quality of information in this authoritative reference.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Adequate, but not the best...........2001-05-21

As much as I admire Janet Marinelli (STALKING THE WILD AMARANTH -- which I highly recommend) and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, I cannot recommend THE BROOKLYN BOTANIC GARDENER'S DESK REFERENCE as THE reference book for the average gardener. A much better buy, though half again as much is AMERICA'S GARDEN BOOK, also from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. AMERICA'S GARDEN BOOK is a true reference which lists plants by type, and recommends plants sure to work in the average garden. Actually, AGB is a stunner. I use it all the time and rarely does it lack some kind of answer to my question.

DESK REFERENCE is geared to the middle-to-advanced gardener. Different sections of the book deal with ecologically sound gardening practices whether one is dealing with a backyard bog or the desert edge. All gardeners should undertake organic gardening as soon as possible (get rid of your lawn to begin with) as it makes for a better planet and you're less likely to poison yourself, but generally, Rodale's offerings are much more practical and detailed and therefore easier for the novice organic gardener to follow.

DESK REFERENCE is printed on pulp paper, contains some drawings but is devoid of photographs. AMERICA'S GARDENING BOOK is printed on top grade slick paper and loaded with photos. If you can afford both go for it, but if you can afford only one book buy the latter.

4 out of 5 stars a good reference, but not for quick lookups.......1999-07-27

A novice gardener, I bought this book when I needed to get some plants in the ground in my new house; for that it was a disappointment. Don't expect to use it to look up "clematis" and find out how to plant it or how often it needs watering. However, it is a good overall reference.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, one-stop referencing for all gardening questions!.......1999-01-26

It was with great joy that I opened this book for the first time. The book is a marvelous compendium of knowledge for all gardeners, no matter the level of skill. The writing is clear and concise. Subject matter is well planned and pleasing to read. Perhaps the most outstanding feature of this book is the index. The references and cross-references are so complete. I give this book my highest recommendation.

              Book Description

This book presents a powerful view of the history of dance, contrasting its role in Western civilization with its significance in other cultures. Highwater--a renowned critic, author, and lecturer on art, theater, music, and dance--links the history of dance to cultural forces as diverse as Karl Marx and Elvis Presley. Beginning with the original, ritualistic, and primal forms of dance, he traces its decline into empty ceremonial forms while all along insisting that dance is a fundamental life impulse made visible in motion--a spontaneous transformation of experience into metaphoric meaning. Considering the historical and creative context from which dance emerged, Highwater goes on to point out the specific contributions and cultural influences of such 20th-century dance giants as Isadora Duncan, Twyla Tharp, Robert Wilson, George Balanchine, Martha Graham, Alwin Nikolais, Erick Hawkins, Jose Limon, Merce Cunningham, Meredith Monk, and Garth Fagan. Also examined are many newer artists, such as Bebe Miller and the Urban Bush Women.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A passionate and knowledgeable treatment of dance.......1998-08-25

We know no other book on dance with the same passion and deep understanding that Highwater brings to this one. Even the fantastic illustrations give a sense of the movement and development of the power of this great art, and the text just as vividly explores dance's ritual, mythic, and subconscious elements, showing us at every juncture how, through the movement of the dance, our inner and outer lives meet.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Dance.......1998-03-31

Most dance books are pretty lightweight. This one is a knockout. Highwater has this way of connecting things, and here he seems to be connecting the history of the human body with the social attitudes of different times and different places. The way we dance is the way we are. On the jacket choreographer Erick Hawkins tells us that this is "the most important book on dance ever published in America." He should know.

                      Book Description

Dr. Dickerson, His Dissertation, And God, is an autobiographical study of the life and times of one black man and his struggle to overcome poverty, racism and eventually alcohol and drug addiction. Millions suffer from some form of addiction. Dr. Dickerson's life story depicts the feelings, situations, and conditions of many. It portrays the spectrum of human affliction and anxieties, fears and frustrations, desires, degradation, hatred, hopes and utopian dreams. Finally the story ends with the exercise of apocalyptic faith in the ultimate triumph of good over evil. Dr. Dickerson's doctoral dissertation consist of a research project enhanced by fifteen years of clinical experience in the field of chemical dependency, and his own first-hand knowledge of substance abuse acquired through his own addiction and recovery from alcohol and drugs. This section also includes a Psycho-Educational Work Book that will provide topics and exercises for the Specialized Training and Educational Program System (S.T.E.P.S.) developed by Dr. Dickerson. Spirituality also plays a major role in finding and maintaining sobriety. The book section titled DNA, Life, and God is a depiction of Jesus Christ, who Dr. Dickerson acknowledges as his Higher Power. The term "Higher Power" is mentioned nine different times, in one form or another in the Twelve-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The founders of Alcoholics Anonymous were Christians who realized that the program could also work as long as members acknowledge that the Higher Power of their choice is greater than themselves.
