5 out of 5 stars Best single guide to Chicago.......2006-01-30

NFT - Chicago is the one book to carry around in your backpack as you cruise the city - but pay attention to the title. It really is not for tourists.

The first thing to do with this book when you get it is to spend the time to walk through it, particularly through the chapters beyond the maps, and most particularly through the "Arts and Entertainment" sections. Once you've done that, then get acquainted with how the maps work by looking at a map of a neighborhood you know well. Never mind that it might not include your favorite corner bar or hot dog stand. Just get to understand how it works with an area you know.

Once you've made friends with the book, then start using it as you walk, ride the "L", or drive in the city. The street maps are very good and each map identifies key places in the neighborhood.

Each neighborhood map has a listing next to the map tells you about neighborhood Banks, Car Washes, Gas Sations, Hospitals, Landmarks, Libraries, Parking, Pharmacies, Pizza places, Post Offices, Schools, Supermarkets, Coffee Shops, Gyms, Hardware Stores, Liquor Stores, Nightlife Spots, Pet Shops, Restaurants, Shopping Locations and Video Rental Stores - but, of course, only if the neighborhood has, say, a bank in it.

I have two minor complaints about this volume. The first is that I wish the North/South/East/West location markers ("3200W," "4000N") were more bolded and more frequent. Second, I would love to have an overall index of places so that, for example, if I could not remember which neighborhood Hopleaf is in, I could go to the general index and locate its map reference.

But I'm just whining. It's a very well organized, well informed, and surprisingly complete piece of work for a list price of $16.95.

By the way - be sure you're buying the most recent version, since it's published each year. If you buy one of the older ones, places like Millennium Park won't be in it. And, as the book itself points out, "The Chicago restaurant scene has exploded in recent years. . . .Lately it seems that trendy new hotspots are popping up by the minute." This, of course, cuts both ways, and the book is careful to point out some of what's closed and gone as well as what's new and hot; but the moral here is that last year's book might be very much out of date.

Finally, while this book on its own will get you where you need to go, I would recommend, if you need something to supplement it, that you get the latest Zagat for Chicago.

5 out of 5 stars great book for new people to chicago.......2005-08-29

uptown, oldtown, gold coast, north side.....sometimes it seems like Chicagoland has another name for every area. This book is great. Just what I needed to explore the areas of Chicago. It's organised by areas and lists all of the different things from restaurants to theatres to laundry mats in the area. The maps are very clear and easy to read. Excellent book for people who've just moved to Chicago (and aren't after the touristy things). I think it's equally useful for people who live in the 'burbs and downtown dwellers. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars scale bar, PLEASE.......2005-06-11

I am a former Chicago resident, planning to move back with my boyfriend who has never lived there. We bought this book so I could show him in more detail neighborhoods, etc. The detailed neighborhood info and many maps are great - BUT they need a scale bar. We like to walk or bike everywhere, and there's no sense of distance on these maps.

4 out of 5 stars Really useful book...but too darn big!.......2005-03-04

Explain this to me: why is the actual size of the Chicago NFT larger than the NYC one? The one I have for NYC is small enough to fit in my pocket; but the Chicago version is just larger...too big to easily carry in a pocket (but it fits in a bag just fine).

If for no other reason that the map of the downtown Pedway, this book is a must-purchase.

4 out of 5 stars essential for move to Chicago.......2004-12-30

This was my bible when I moved to Chicago 2 years ago. It has both practical information (such as video stores, post offices, bus and train routes) on detailed neighborhood maps, as well as shopping and cuisine listings. I used it, and recommend it, constantly. It was far more helpful than any other city guide I tried, and over time, I knew the city well enough to put it away! And THAT's when you're REALLY not a tourist anymore.

As a person just starting to design letterheads and business cards, this book provided a feast for both my eyes and imagination. It also left me satisfied that I too have the ability to design letterhead and business cards that are as attractive and distinctive as those in the book.

The designs in the book range from the comic to the sophisticated. While many of the designs are for graphic artists and are therefore more graphically adventurous, there are also examples of work for: a dentist, neurosurgeon, glassblower, realtor, shopping mall, communications firm, and photographer among others.

In addition to having a plethora of design ideas, the book also has information on design and production costs. The only drawback to the book is that some of the papers used for the letterheads do not photograph well.

In conclusion, this book helps the designer by providing a starting point for the imagination. It also helps the designer work with the client by giving the client examples of work to look at. The client can then show the designer both what he/she likes and what he/she does not, aiding the design process for both client and designer.

          Product Description

NATURE / ANIMALS / SPIRITUALITY. This is a natural history story of the life of a river otter and the autobiographical complement of the otterÂ’s researcher. Their unique journey through life transcends two worlds: the real and the spiritual. Travel with them through seasons and years as they discover many remarkable mysteries of the natural world, evoking wonder at its beauty and diversity.

The story of "The Otter Spirit" is based on true accounts of observations the researcher recorded firsthand, and on imagined events that very credibly could be observed, based on reports documented in the referenced literature. The dialogue and expression of feelings among the otters and other animals in this book are admitted anthropomorphic interpretations of events told in the story. However, facts articulated in the book are real and substantiated by direct measurement by the researcher or authenticated in the references.

Hope prevails that, through the tale of the Otter Spirit, a genuine appreciation of these marvelous animals and the environment they call home will be conferred to the reader. For some, a greater passion will drive them to research the literature and, perhaps, go beyond, to find their own Otter Spirit on a river, in a forest, on a mountain yet to be explored and personally realize the sacred gifts that Nature offers those who take the time to hear the Ancient Voices.

          Includes 27 photos/illustrations and index.

          1 out of 5 stars Spiritual Otters.......2006-02-15

Under the assumption that this book would actually tell me something about river otters, I purchased it. In a condescending and prolix style, the author describes her spiritual journey into Native American beliefs using otters as a vehicle for her exploration.

It would be a perfectly lovely gift for a bright child interested in a holistic approach to nature and the world around us.

          5 out of 5 stars Otter's Essence.......2005-07-07

Did you know over 350,000 animal hairs could fit into one square inch? The Otter Spirit will entertain you with facts and fun relating to the playful spirit of a serious wildlife researcher's adventures in the wilds. Berg's original poetry sprinkled throughout the book distills Nature's cycles into an essence of life's personal and universal journeys. The Otter Spirit opens pathways to our own explorations within ourselves and Nature. Read and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A NEW APPRECIATION FOR NATURE!.......2005-06-12

WHILE OTTERS MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN MY FIRST CHOICE FOR READING MATERIAL, I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT ONCE I GOT INTO THE STORY I WAS FASCINATED. IT CERTAINLY OPENED MY EYES TO THE WONDERS OF MOTHER NATURE'S WORLD. ALSO, I AM PARTICULARLY IMPRESSED WITH THE PERSEVERANCE AND DEDICATION OF THE AUTHOR, WHO SACRIFICED 12 YEARS OF HER LIFE WORKING ON THE PROJECT. "OTTER'S" IS JUST A CLASSY AND PROFESSIONALLY WRITTEN BOOK, WHICH ENTERTAINS AS WELL AS EDUCATES. I CAN WHOLEHEARTEDLY RECOMMEND IT TO BOTH "NATURE LOVERS" AND "COUCH POTATOES".

Dance 2wice is a collection of unique photographic essays dedicated to contemporary dance, distilled from the pages of the celebrated interdisciplinary arts journal 2wice. The images explore the dynamic dialogue between performance and photography and bring together the talent of some the world's most respected dancers, choreographers, and photographers. In these carefully conceived collaborations, the transitory art of such key contemporary dance figures as Merce Cunningham, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor, and Karole Armitage is vividly captured: The pages become the stage for beautifully conceived performances, intriguing ideas, and intimate portraits.

Self This issue explores the notion of individuality, identity, and selfhood. Our ideas of self have been challenged in recent years with technological advances such as human cloning, just as the lens of the camera altered our representations of selfhood early in the century. In this issue, we explore how the self is created, represented, and challenged by art and science. 5 out of 5 stars An Enlightening Autobiography.......2006-01-08

This is an inspiring autobiography of one of the most successful African-American educators of his time. From about 1875-1925 Scarborough taught Greeek and Latin, mostly at Wilberforce University, where he eventually became President of the university. Scarborough gives an interesting and heartfelt account of his endeavors in education, classical literature, and the promotion of his race and faith. The book should interest the general reader, as well as professional classicists and historians.

                            Book Description

Outside Books introduces a unique series of international sport/travel guides: your favorite adventure sports, our top picks--worldwide--of where to pursue them.

Follow in the footsteps of early twentieth-century explorers on twenty treks spanning six continents that range from Everest Base Camp to a pilgrimage across the Pyrenees. They include: the mysterious Ruwenzori mountains in the heart of Africa; five classic Himalayan tours, including the Annapurna Circuit and seldom-visited Snow Lake; an adventure to the Tekes River Valley in central Asia, country rarely seen by Westerners since the Soviets sealed off the region in the 1920s; sunset from the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, the highest point in Africa; a hut-to-hut trek in Italy's storied Dolomites; and a llama trek through the surreal redrock desert canyons of southern Utah's Escalante.

For nearly thirty years, award-winning Outside magazine has been bringing together the best in adventure travel, sports, nature writing, and photography. Now, W.W. Norton and Outside come together to bring that same excellence to an exciting new line of books.

The first three Outside Adventure Travel Guides describe the planet's finest trekking, sea kayaking, and mountain biking destinations. Each is an invitation to join a seasoned traveler and sports enthusiast as he walks, paddles, or pedals his way from continent to continent in a worldwide quest for the best. A search for isolated places where sunrise and sunset still count, and every hour between is spent outdoors. Outside Adventure Travel Guides are travelogues to the world of adventure sports written, designed, and illustrated to inspire readers to take the first steps toward an active vacation of exploration. The authors rate each expedition in terms of its difficulty, required skills, comfort, and cost. Specific routes are described in detail, as are reliable tour operators, outfitters, and local guides. Vital statistics and maps to each trip are provided, along with total trip time including airline, bus, and Jeep conveyance to remote jumping-off points. Best seasons to visit are given, including prime off-season months in which to avoid an overabundance of like-minded adventurers. Whether readers are looking for top-flight outfitters or want to outfit themselves, whether they're on a budget or on a binge, Outside Adventure Travel Guides will inspire them to get underway.

                            4 out of 5 stars Concise reviews of world's top 20 treks.......2007-09-08

Since retirement, a friend and I have been doing 14er's in Colorado and hiking the best trails in the U.S., such as the Grand Canyon and Glacier NP. I got this book as a gift, and it caused us to look seriously at hiking outside the U.S. The book provides a general outline of the 20 best treks in the world. Beautiful photos accompany inspiring text. The treks are rated for difficulty and cost. References to specific outfitters and to other resources are provided, but these references are getting dated. Since getting the book, we have trekked in the Everest region of Nepal, done the Milford Track in New Zealand, and hiked hut-to-hut in the Dolomites. Thanks to the inspiration in this book, we are now off to Patagonia to do the Torres del Paine Circuit.

                                          Book Description

This is the first comprehensive study in English about the medieval imperial abbey of Farfa, which played a key role in the period of ecclesiastical reform, beginning in the mid-eleventh century. Its main sources are the Register and Chronicle, compiled by Gregory of Catino, a partisan monk. Controlling strategic property in central Rome and along the coast of Latium, Farfa functioned as a quasi-imperial embassy, supporting the empire in its struggle with the papacy for hegemony. Imperial ties and internal conflicts led to Farfa's loss of liberties and dependency upon the papacy. The book both depicts the competition between the empire and the papacy, and charts Farfa's losing struggle to maintain Benedictine standards and its independence from an expansive papacy.

This is a wonderful book. I'm writing a historical romance and I used this book for reference on the food and times of France and Europe in 1815. It's marvelous.

In addition to telling the story of the great chef, this book also provides a lot of insight into the history of food and its evolution, and some of the "dark" side of being a chef during the days of Careme. His health suffered mightily from the fumes from the poorly ventilated kitchens during the time, and the long hours that he worked pushed him into exhaustion, further compromising his health.

I found this full of detailed research and interesting anecdotes. The recipes included were also very insightful, and well chosen. It was also written with a good pace and narrative style. Would highly recommend. I've moved on to "Escoffier: The King of Chefs."

For an excellent blend of biography and cookbook, choose Cooking For Kings: The Life Of Antonin Careme, The First Celebrity Chef, a survey of the life of the first known celebrity chef Antonin Careme and his recipes. The cook's own memoirs are used to trace his rise from an abandoned child to becoming one of the greatest cooks in Paris. Careme was more than a chef: he invited chef's tools, he cooked for kings and noblemen, and he even made Napoleon's wedding cake. His marriage of food with glamour made him a notable figure - as well as the first chef to become rich by publishing cookbooks. This is a lively history recommended for food fans.

The review before me explains well the contents of this book. I would only add that you learn how Careme pulled together the skills of speciality cooks to create grand meals and, in turn, earned the title of chef. Sadly, the very process or cooking (carbon monoxide and partilate matter in the lungs from charcoal-fuled stoves and ovens) killed him while only in his 40s but he was dedicated to writing about his skills as much as he used them, thus codifying what we know as Haute' cuisine and creating the first modern cookbooks.

Fortunately Kelly's writing style does not bog down in detail and he is quite readable. The parallel social history of the upper classes is enjoyable reading as well.

Although the book can get boring at times, this man is the real deal. He is well rounded and this book shows how it's not ALL about the money. He is so intuitive it's scary at times. To come from almost nothing and become one of the richest men in Ireland is quite a feat..
