Book Description
Based on the assumption that invertebrates as well as vertebrates possess factors regulating hematopoiesis, response to infection or wounding, studies dealing with the evolution of immunity have focused on the isolation and characterization of putative cytokine-related molecules from invertebrates. Until recently, most of our knowledge of cytokine- and cytokine receptor-like molecules in invertebrates has relied on functional assays and similarities at the physicochemical level. As such, a phylogenetic relationship between invertebrate cytokine-like molecules and invertebrate counterparts could not be convincingly demonstrated.
In the present book, recent studies demonstrating cytokine-like activities and related signaling pathways in invertebrates are critically reviewed, focusing on findings from molecular biology and taking advantage of the completion of the genome from the fly Drosophila and the worm Caenorhabditis elegans.

Book Description
This book on phylogeny and immunity reconstructs the history and evolutionary pathways of immunity among the various forms of life. The authors argue that the immunity could have evolved different adequately successful patterns in the animal sub-regnum which are strictly determined by the morpho-physiological possibilities of the animals. They state that the vertebrate type of immunity evolved only in the chordate branch. The publication devotes special attention to the arthropods and molluscs, as they have attracted more investigative efforts than any other invertebrate taxa. The authors selected Agnatha, Chondrichthyes, and Osteichthyes from the vertebrate taxa in order to show where and how the morphofunctional basis of the truly adapative immunity of the endothermic tetrapods gradually evolved. Each chapter gives the description of the origin and interrelationships of the representatives of the taxon in question. Also given are the main biological, morphological, non-morphological and immune attributes. Emphasized throughout the book is the central idea that immunological reactions are a part of the overall biological phenomena and should be studied only from this aspect. The authors express that the fields of comparative and evolutionary immunology will provide inspiration for further investigations in biomedicine in the near future.

Book Description
Immunology of Annelids provides a state-of-the-art review of the biological and biochemical processes involved in defense reactions of annelids. The book covers phylogeny, taxonomy, and fundamental body structure to provide basic information essential to developing a full understanding of the defense system of an organism. Physiological aspects of the relationship between the immune systems and cells and their limitations are discussed in detail, and the role of cells in cellular defense, transplantation, and humoral defenses is explained. The importance of annelids and their defense reaction from the phylogenetic standpoint is examined in a chapter comparing vertebrate and invertebrate defense strategies. Immunology of Annelids is a practical reference for cell biologists, immunologists, evolutionary and developmental biologists, and other researchers who need insight into the development and hierarchy of immune reactions.

Book Description
This book is aimed at two audiences. First, it will present evidence for the earthworm's immune system. Second, the results strongly suggest that certain molecules of the earthworm's immune system may be exploited as natural antibiotics--thus the biomedical applications. There are two advantages for using earthworms. First, they are an inexpensive, non-controversial invertebrate model. Second, in contrast to other invertebrates (e.g. Drosophila, C elegans) they are essential for maintaining the integrity of soil. Earthworms have a highly effective immune system since cancer cannot be induced in them nor does it seem to occur in natural populations. Cytotoxicity of cancer cells has been examined in relation to two earthworm leukocytes based upon: structure; cell differentiation antigens; function revealed by FACS and mAbs. These cells are SMALL (8-11 µm) electron dense (SC), positive for human cell adhesion molecules (CD11a, CD45RA, CD45RO, CDw49b, CD54, for ?2-microglobulin and for Thy-1; LARGE (12-15 µm) electron lucent cells (LC), negative for these same markers. Leukocytes synthesize and secrete lytic molecules (fetidins, CCF-1, lysenin, eiseniapore) participate in recognition of, binding to, killing and sequestration of cancer cells in vitro. Earthworm lytic levels are significantly higher than those of human NK cells. Earthworms possess a highly evolved, unique and efficient immune system that has facilitated long-term survival.

Customer Reviews:
A must!.......2006-01-10
We found Fodor's and Frommer's travel books to possess the best of information on Aruba. My husband Alan stated he didn't feel like a novice coming into this lovely tropical paradise thanks to these guides.
The books were pretty right on when it came to restaurant prices, only a few had varied their charges. One restaurant was a nice surprise as we were expecting to pay twice as much.
To add to the information, besides the buses running to the capital city of Oranjestad, they also have $1.00 taxis and these vans function well when you don't want to wait for the next bus. Oranjestad is a must visit for shopping, eating and touring.
The books also didn't include the native poverty that exists beyond the resorts and touring areas. Few Arubans own a decent hacienda. This was a shock to my husband and me as we were expecting to see average living styles.
Compact, Concise, and Helpful.......2003-12-24
This book is short and to the point of helpful information. My family has used it multiple times for vacations to Aruba and it has been helpful for each vacation. The information is accurate and concise in its description of the island.

The best book I've read this year-.......1999-06-10
This is the best book I've read this year. It talks about the exciting days of the Old West when cowboys rounded up cows and horses, when outlaws roamed the range, and when Indians hunted buffalo. The conflicts come between the cowboys and the Indians about the hunting of the buffalo (almost to extinction), which brings starvation to the Indian. The gunfighter still lives in the chapters about such famous ones as Bat Masterson, Doc Holliday, Virgil and Morgan Earp, and the best gunfighter of all time, Wyatt Earp.
If you're a fan of the old west, you will probably enjoy this book.

Customer Reviews:
Great for all around pet lovers.......2000-10-25
I was very impressed with this book. It lists 300 great web sites for pet lovers separating them into very helpful categories. From dogs, cats, rabbits, iguanas to rats and gerbils. The dog section is big, listing great sites from dog breeds to vet info to card making. It has got a pretty big cat section too. My thoughts are, if you can think of a pet subject, this book probably has it listed. If you love surfing out pet sites, you will love this book. It is a great reference book to have on your shelf. It comes in handy when you have a quick thing you want to look up regarding pets but are not sure where to start looking.
Incredibly Useful!.......2000-10-13
Where pets and information intersect! This book is incredibly useful in spotlighting sites for pet lovers of all ages. If you have pets, need advice on care or medical issues, want information on pets before you acquire them, or just want to find some fun sites, "300 Incredible Things For Pet Lovers on the Internet" is a book you must have!

Useful info.......2004-02-29
The book contains spelling errors and is marred by pictures overlaying other pictures. The paper used is so-so and will yellow like it's previous versions. As a resource to the custom knife industry, it is valuable however.
A good source to find basic info on knife makers.......1999-06-21
I use this book for one reason. If I find a custom knife I am interested it I use the directory in the book to find out where the maker lives, their contact info and price range. That alone is worth the price of the book though Ken could improve upon it by providing page numbers in the directory that would show you examples of a maker's work instead of flipping through the book trying to find them. I would recommend for next year Ken try to get at least one photo per maker.
Annual release of trends in cutlery.......1999-04-13
This book is a review of trends happening in the past year for the cutlery enthusiast. Pictures are B&W but the paper this book uses is so-so.
This particular issue lacks the maker photo index and is marred with misspellings. Also pictures were overlayed on each other which makes seeing some of these fine handmade knives difficult. Articles are informative.

Customer Reviews:
Useful for Basics........2006-12-30
Let me begin by saying I know very little about ballroom dancing, but like so many others, my wife and I have gotten somewhat interested thanks to the Dancing With the Stars craze that has become so popular. She has insisted that we take dance lessons and, not being one eager to embarrass myself publicly, I wanted to at least know some of the basics before going in. DANCE CLASS by Paul Bottomer seemed a good starting point.
The book is broken into three different styles of dance; club dances which include the tango, the salsa and even line dancing (yuck), International Latin-American Dances which include such dances as the mamba and the paso doble, and finally International Standard Partner Dances such as the waltz and foxtrot. The lessons of each dance begins with an historical overview of the dance, its origin, evolution and intended flavor.
For the sake of brevity, I will follow the outline of the Salsa. After the historical review is given, next you will find the Musical Count. This area is one of, what I feel are the books short comings. The rhythm is described quite well, but for me, the musical backdrop would have been better illustrated with simply giving me some popular song titles in that particular genre that I could reference to acquire the proper musical "feel". Again, I know very little about ballroom dancing, and some specific mucical scores would have helped.
Next, the basic moves of the Salsa are explained as well as the proper holds. In the specific case of the Salsa, seventeen varying Salsa moves are explained both verbally and with detailed photos. In some cases, though not all, as not with the Salsa, there are accompanying foot diagrams. These are not always easy to follow, but should have been included with every dance.
In summary, I'm not dissappointed with this book. It accomplished what I ment for it to and that is to move me to the next level where I feel comfortable enough to begin basic ballroom lessons, but there are some areas that could have been improved upon and there may be other books in this field that are superior to this one.
