Texas Past.......2000-09-09
Del Weniger used 360 journal entries from whites who explored what would be Texas from the late 17th Century to 1860 to find out what the fauna of the region once was. He used only observation notes to avoid the distortions that can arise from reminiscences, and what he found is awe-inspiring: vast numbers of plains animals, comparable to the African savanna and not limited to buffalo. There were pronghorns and White-tailed Deer in herds of hundreds on the prairies - yes, deer in the open in giant herds. His research indicates they became shy forest creatures after whites with their mass slaughter and land destruction entered the scene. With them were attendant wolf packs, also hundreds strong. Peccaries, jackrabbits, coyotes, and elk (in north and south Texas!) joined them for what must have been an awesome spectacle to the European settlers. Jaguar roamed to the Red River. Ocelots lived wherever there was shrub cover, even in what's now the Panhandle. Mountain lions were encountered on a daily basis and said to be relatively harmless and even tamable. Immense prairie dog towns extended for miles with populations in the hundreds of millions. Beavers, otters, ringtails, black bears, and gray foxes were abundant, but armadillos hadn't yet moved north of the Valley and porcupines hadn't moved south of the Panhandle before 1860. Weniger uses etymology and range records to validate his arguments and clarify his points. The only irritating thing about this book is his ignorance of Native Americans. Names from American languages (like jaguar, opossum, and cougar) he says came from "the Indian word for...", implying there's only one Indian language. And for opossum, he says that the first syllable is a white approximation of the "peculiar grunt common to Indian speech". No linguistic research past Hollywood Westerns? That aside, this is a fascinating, enlightening book.

Customer Reviews:
Inaccurate. A waste of money........2004-09-05
My overall impression is that this guide is poorly researched, inaccurate and, worst of all, may be disguised advertising.
For example, the authors devote a page-and-a-half to describing the Gaylord Opyrlyand Resort & Convention Center. The description is not only fawning, but inaccurate: they say (twice)the facility has a "1,500-foot-high roof," which is totally untrue. Clearly the authors have never visited the property.
Other properties get two or three paragraph descriptions, all of which sound as if they were lifted from press releases or property brochures.
Overall, there doesn't seem to be any evidence that the authors are actually familiar with any of the places they describe or recommend. Certainly the book doesn't discriminate between worthwhile attractions and the souvenir shops that pretend to be "museums."
There is also a notable absence of maps --- unusual for a tourist guide, I'd say.
This work has soured me on everything in the "Insider's Guide" series. It is a waste of money. Frommer's offers far more and far more accurate information for less money

Great Book.......2003-01-23
This book, with great velocity, pulls the readers through the "must know" aspects of one of the most exciting cities in the US. Very well written and highly recommended.
This book rocks!.......2000-04-05
I got a truly "inside" perspective with Q&A's from some Nashville natives including singers and songwriters --- where they like to eat, where they like to spend free time, etc. The guide gives quite a view of all that Nashville has to offer including annual festivals and events (for example, I live here and I never even heard about 'mule day'! ) and all kinds of recreational activities. not to mention the sections on real estate and education --- essential for anyone moving into the area. all of this in incredible detail. i say "y'all go out and buy yourself a copy".
INSIDERS GUIDE TO NASHVILLE, 1999.......2000-04-04
I HAVE THE NEW INSIDERS GUIDE AND I HAVE ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH. I WORK WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO THE AREA AND THIS BOOK IS A GREAT SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO KNOW RESTAURANTS, SITES,TRIPS,SHOPPING, ETC.
New things to do.......2000-04-04
Having experienced the obvious many times, this book helped me to find new, fun things to do on my frequent weekend trips to Nashville. I love all the background info, too.

Book Description
In the late 1920s, "streamlined" became the term businessmen used to described new models that were easier to produce as well as those that met with less sales resistance than older products. Illustrating this concept with streamlined objects from soup cans to the Chrysler building, Jeffrey Meikle's classic book, Twentieth Century Limited, celebrates the birth of the industrial design profession from 1925-1939. This second edition includes a new preface and improved photographic reproduction.
Commercial artists who answered the call of businessWalter Dorwin Teague, Norman Bel Geddes, Henry Dreyfuss, and Raymond Loewy the best known among themwere pioneers who envisioned a coherent machine-age environment in which life would be clean, efficient, and harmonious. Working with new materialschrome, stainless steel, Bakelite plasticthey created a streamlined expressionist style which reflected the desire of the Depression-era public for a frictionless, static society.
Appliances such as Loewy's Coldspot refrigerator "set a new standard" (according to the advertisements), and its usefulness extended to the way it improved the middle-class consumer's taste for sleek new products.
Profusely illustrated with 150 photographs, Twentieth Century Limited pays tribute to the industrial designers and the way they transformed American culture; a generation after its initial publication, this book remains the best introduction to the subject. The new edition will fascinate anyone interested in art, architecture, technology, and American culture of the 1930s.
Customer Reviews:
Great example of life in the depression years.......2007-03-12
The author does an excellent job of showing how industrial design grew in the United States and diffused throughout the economy. The idea of making products and buildings consumer friendly began growing in the 1920's and hit its peak in the 1930's. The depression spurred a need for consumers to have their preferences swayed by what industrial designers would create. Geddes and others would create a pantheon of designs that revolutionized America. The sky scrappers and offices that would look remarkable were the products of mostly four men (Walter Dorwin Teague, Norman Bel Geddes, Henry Dreyfuss, and Raymond Loewy). The pictures in this book do an excellent job of illustrating all the authors' main points and provide a unique insight into an older world. The final part of the book and the best in my opinion is the coverage of the two world fairs. The worlds fairs were a great example of how the country could look forward and embrace consumerism even in the heart of the depression. This is an interesting topic covered very well here. Highly recommend.

streamlined.......2000-10-25
No, a history of industrial design doesn't sound sexy, does it. But 20th Century Ltd. is a thoroughly cool (and thoughtful) exploration of the careers of the three designers who became famous in the 40's -- Loewy, Dreyfuss and Bel Geddes -- and how they changed the 'look and feel' of daily American life, from the black, clunky electromechanical armatures of the 20's to the streamlined, chopped-and-channelled sleek aluminum cowlings of the 40's. This aesthetic language was the secret basis for the giddy cosmetic futurism of Buck Rogers, the 1939 NY Worlds Fair, and Harley Earl's tailfins. There's a good deal of material here, too, about design integrity, a simple principle that can give you a new skepticism about on the products you live with. Is a car's primary function to get the passenger safely from place to place, or is it to get itself sold? If cars are designed aerodynamically, why isn't there an optimal design? Why aren't houses mass-produced like cars are? Just because you were born knowing what toilets and telephone handsets and staplers 'should' look like, doesn't make them God-given and unchangable. . . . 20th Century is a history of how and why the basic consumer-goods design decisions in this century, and after reading it, I was amazed at how many more new alternatives seem possible.
streamlined future.......2000-04-23
this book is a great history of the first industrial designers in America during the thirties Meickle describes the characters their motivations and the meaningfulness of the STREAMLINED aesthetic very good and useful

GORGEOUS GARDEN RAILWAYS
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous Garden Railways by Marc Horovitz.......2006-08-14
Great book of past and present Garden Railways.
excelent photos.
Very disappointing, "washed-out" photo color and detail. Definitely not 'gorgeous' photos. .......2006-07-11
I was quite surprised to be so disappointed by this long-awaited book. This was supposed to be a coffee table book which would appeal aesthetically to everybody. But it doesn't have much aesthetic appeal because the photos aren't gorgeous. The biggest photo shortcoming is that the color printing has a "washed-out" 1970's quality to it. This may be the printer's fault, not the author's. Another serious problem is that many -- perhaps most? -- of the photos look like they're detail shots cropped at a relatively low resolution from a larger photo -- or even shot with a zoom lense? For example, you can't make out individual figurines because they're blurred by the low resolution.
My one-star rating reflects my personal impression that the book failed to achieve its primary stated purpose: Presenting "gorgeous" photos of garden railways. For comparison, the color photos in Garden Railways magazine seem to me to be printed to a somewhat higher and more consistent standard than were many of the photos in this book. My rating also reflects my impression that the marketing of the book was possibly a bit deceptive: The cover art is indeed printed in "gorgeous" color, but the photos within are of much lower quality.
If you're not sensitive to color/resolution quality in photos, you may not notice any problem. If so, my one-star rating would be much lower than your appraisal of the book.
It's a table top book with a softcover. .......2006-07-02
Gorgeous Garden Railways is a new and different type of book about garden railways. This is not just another book on how to install track, or the story of scale and gauge. This is a table top photo book about some very good looking garden railroads.
Gorgeous Garden Railways is like that photo book of whales or on sailing that you might already have sitting on the coffee table at home. There are 144 pages, about 10" x 10" in size, that include over 130 photographs on high quality paper.
This book was compiled by Marc Horovitz who was the creator of Garden Railways magazine over 20 years ago and is still the editor of this magazine. Marc has written several books on the subject of garden railroads, spoken at most major Large Scale events, and is the one viable person that could compete with us for the "most garden railroads ever seen" award.
Marc is not just another person that writes about garden railroads. He is someone that builds them and has a refined definition of what a garden railroad should be. All of his canons are based on many years of practical application in this hobby. Looking at the photographs in this book helps you see what the "text book" definition of a garden railroad is to Marc.
Marc's co-author, Pat Hayward, is very easy to spot at the garden railroad conventions that we attend each year. When most other people are taking photographs of the trains, Pat is taking photographs of how people use plants. Don't just think that the photographs that were selected are here because they are pretty. They can teach you how to use plants on your railroad. Her thirty years experience in horticulture make her the perfect teammate for selecting photographs for this new type of garden railroad book.
What I liked.
I liked that two experts in the field of garden railroads took a long time and looked through thousands of photographs. They used their personal filters and picked a collection of photographs that flow through the pages. They had less than 150 pages for photographs and did not have the luxury we enjoy at LSOL.com to shoot 20 photographs of the same item and show it from a dozen different angles.
I enjoyed the text that acts as the mortar that holds the photographs together. The photograph captions helped me understand a little bit about each photograph and gave me a little insight as to why it was selected for that section of the book.
I really liked looking back on Garden Railroads from the 1930's. This is how the book starts off. I am sure there are many of us that did not even know that garden railroads are that old. The first couple of photographs are in black and white. My son and I spent a long time looking at those images wondering how they did it without Kadee couplers, Wireless Remote Control and sectional track.
How did they get answers to questions when they could not just pop online ask a question at LSOL.com and get an answer the same day. It was like looking at photographs of the pioneers that traveled the Old West. You wonder how they made it and how exciting it must have been during this golden age of garden trains.
I liked that most of the photographs looked like they were taken in a garden setting. I know that it is fun to try and take a photograph of our railroad so that people think they are real trains, but that is not for me. I always like to see a photograph of a garden railroad look like a garden railroad.
There should be some recognizable element in the photograph that lets us know where we are. (My friend Marty is always excluded from this JDK tenet - he is as real as it gets. See if you can find his several photographs in the book. They are just great!)
What I did not like.
I wish this book was available as a hard bound book. It would have been great to have this as a hardcover, stitched bound book sitting on our coffee table for guests that come over. As a hardbound book it would have a level of credibility that it will not get as a paper back.
Shame on the publishers for cheaping out. At least they could have printed some with a hardcover. Maybe in the next print run. They did add outer flaps on the cover to give the illusion, but it still is a softbound book.
A few of the larger photographs were not as clear and a little dark . It is possible that these were 35mm photographs that had to be scanned and needed to have a higher resolution scan or more time in Photoshop.
These two points do not take away from the overall uniqueness of this wonderful book.
So is it worth it?
Like Marc, we have had the opportunity to tour some of the world's best garden railroads. We have taken over 60,000 photographs of hundreds and hundreds of railroads across the United States and have them posted at LSOL.com.
What we see in this book is what we have found across the United States. Each garden railroad is different.
Each railroad offers a unique perspective. When you attend different National Conventions across the country you will find a wide diversity among the railroads that you visit in each region.
There may be one or two that are similar, if they are designed by the same person, but the majority are as different as the people that created them. This book will let you see this diversity for a lot less than a road trip to the next National Convention.
Gorgeous Garden Railways will make a fine addition to your collection of Large Scale Garden Train books.
A Gorgeous Book about Garden Railroads.......2006-06-12
Marc Horovitz has edited Garden Railways magazine forever. He has contributed to or cowritten several books on the subject as well. And despite Marc's ability to "get his hands dirty" with a gardening or railroading project, he never forgets that the best garden railroads are more than the sum of their parts.
Marc and his cowriter Pat Hayward have put together the best "coffeetable book" on Garden Railroading ever. The emphasis is on the many dozens of "gorgeous" photographs, which range from the charming to the awe-inspiring.
But nobody, even the newest beginner, should be intimidated by this book. Rather Marc and Pat hope the book will encourage more and more people to get involved when they see what is possible. When you take a close look, you'll see that to the authors, the word "gorgeous" doesn't mean "unattainable by normal people," but "well-conceived, balanced, and attractive."
Marc's overall concern seems to be that each garden railroad should have integrity, that is, it should be designed, built, and planted in a way that is true, not only to the preferences of the gardener/railroader, but also to itself and to the land it occupies. In other words, Marc looks for a naturalistic setting and a consistent vision that is supported by the accessories and plantings.
True, some of the railroads shown in the book border on spectacular, but majority of them are simply well-conceived and well-executed versions of the garden railroads that many thousands of folks have already put into their back yards. Marc includes the disclaimer: "The railways shown in this book were built by experienced, dedicated hobbyists. But don't let that stop you; they were all beginners once."
In other words, nothing in this book has "Don't try this at home" stamped on it.
The contribution of Marc's coauthor, Pat Hayward, is visible, not only in her descriptions of appropriate garden railroad plants, but also in the choice of photographs that show effective use of plantings for each garden railroad.
Although Pat doesn't call out many of the species illustrated, the vast majority of plants shown in the book are readily available to most gardeners in North America. If you see something you like, chances are that if you take the book to a full-service nursery, they will be able to tell you the name of what you want, and whether it will survive in your region.
In short, Gorgeous Garden Railways allows readers to see many entirely different kinds of railroads and to see what is possible. Again, nothing in this book is labeled "Don't try this at home." The inspirational value alone is worth the investment.
By the way, the recently-added one-star review was by a person whose other reviews show that he hate almost everything but certain camera gadgets. If THAT reviewer would give the garden railroading community an even better book I would be glad to promote it. Sadly we'll have to comfort ourselves with the best book of this sort that has been published, well, ever. . ..
Paul Race - Lead Editor for Family Garden Trains
Highly recommended for all model railway enthusiasts.......2006-06-03
Railway gardening is combination of model railroading and designed gardening. Expertly co-authored by Marc Horovitz and Pat Hayward, Gorgeous Garden Railways is an impressive showcase of beautifully intricate model towns and railroad communities combined with backyard gardening and introduces readers to a short history of the hobby. Gorgeous Garden Rail-ways is a beautifully presented compendium of trains and rolling stock used in garden railways, including miniature buildings, structures and bridges that line the track, horticultural requirements of garden railroads, how to incorporate ponds and water features, and a vivid pictorial tour of some of the world's most beautiful garden railways. Gorgeous Garden Railways is very highly recommended for all model railway enthusiasts, as well as landscapers and gardeners intrigued by the addition of wonderful model railroads as a part of their garden esthetics.

Book Description
This volume is the first edition of Petrus de Alvernia's Sententia super librum 'De vegetabilibus et plantis'. The treatise 'De vegetabilibus et plantis', which goes back to the Peripatetic Nicolaus of Damascus and has an interesting tradition (from Greek into Syrian, from Syrian into Arabic, from Arabic into Latin), was considered to be a work of Aristotle's and was among the subjects prescribed for study in the Facultas Artium in Paris. Petrus de Alvernia's Sententia should primarily be regarded as an exposition of this often problematic work for the students of this faculty.
The Introduction discusses the tradition of 'De vegetabilibus et plantis', the authenticity of the ascription of the commentary to Petrus de Alvernia, the characteristiscs of the commentary, and its relation to the commentary by Albertus Magnus. The Text is followed by indices nominum, locorum, plantarum, and verborum potiorum.

Customer Reviews:
Invaluable resource for therapists working with dancers.......2003-09-23
This is an indispensable resource for the physical therapist or Pilates instructor who works with dancers. It covers functional anatomy as it relates to the dancer, teaches the analysis of posture and movement as it relates to the classical dancer, the typical injuries sustained by dancers and their management and rehabilitation.
This text, combined with Sally Fitt's, Dance Kinesiology, should be in every therapist's library. If the book has one fault, it is that is focuses almost exclusively on classical dancers.
If you teach Dance , you must have this !.......1999-07-23
This book written by Justin Howse, Consultant Orthepaedic Surgeon to the Royal Ballet Schools, The Royal Academy of Dancing and the Remedial Dance Clinic, London , and also by Shirley Hancock, Principal Physiotherapist to the Royal Ballet Schools, the Royal Academy of Dancing and the Remedial Dance Clinic ,London.
This book is a study reading requirement for the Royal Academy of Dancing Anatomy paper.
The foreward by Dame Ninette de Valois, says it all really. "This book gives us the opportunity to indulge in some serious reflection. It is full of highly technical observations on movement as related to the world of ballet and is accompanied by helpful instructions. A great deal of it should be rewarding to students, dancers, teachers, repetiteurs and ballet staff in general. I dare to add that in my opionion, it is also food for thought for choreographers. Today it is not customary for choreographers to give either scientific or practical thought to their choreographic demands. Let us recall that a composer has to remember to keep within the range of a singer's voice. It therefore seems right for a choreographer to study more carefully not only the limitation of dancer's limbs but also the limitation of their general stamina ."
You will never regret spending the money on this book.I refer to this book often. It has excellent photographs also.
I am fortunate in that one of my friends is a physiotherapist who works at the local medical centre. This book provides excellent back up.
