The Florida Panther: Life And Death Of A Vanishing Carnivore
David Maehr Manufacturer: Island Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 155963507X |
Book Description
When the first field study of the Florida panther took place in 1973, so little was known about the animal that many scientists believed it was already extinct. During more extensive research conducted from 1981 to 1986, panthers were proven to exist, but the handful of senile, anemic, and parasite-infested specimens that were captured indicated a grim future. During those early years a remarkably enduring image of the panther was born, and despite voluminous data gathered over the next decade that showed the panther to be healthy, long-lived, and reproducing, that earlier image has yet to be dispelled.
For nine years, biologist David S. Maehr served as project leader of the Florida Panther Study Project, helping to gather much of the later, surprisingly positive data. In The Florida Panther , he presents the first detailed portrait of the animal-its biology, natural history, and current status-and a realistic assessment of its prospects for survival.
Maehr also provides an intriguing look at the life and work of a field biologist: how captures are made, the intricacies of radio-telemetry tracking, the roles of various team members. He describes the devastating intrusion of politics into scientific work, as he discusses the widespread problems caused by the failure of remote and ill-informed managers to provide needed support and to communicate effectively to the public the goals and accomplishments of the scientists. He examines controversial efforts to establish a captive breeding program and to manipulate the Florida panther's genetic stock with the introduction of relatives from west Texas.
Protection of high-quality habitat, much of it in the hands of private landowners, is the key to the long-term survival of the Florida panther. Unless agency decision makers and the public are aware of the panther's true situation, little can be done to save it. This book will play a vital role in correcting widespread misconceptions about the panther's current condition and threats to its survival.

This book is a must for any amature wild life enthusiast.......1999-11-17
Today morning before leaving for work i happen to watch National geographic channel wherein there was one hour programe on Florida panther. It's survival seems to be highly endangered due to the fact that their genetic poll being limited and in-breeding among the cats inevitable it gives a very tragic case of survival. I being an avid wildlife enthsiast from India hope that American people will defenitely do something for the survival of Florida panther.
Thanks

The most comprehensive and updated of all Tibet guidebooks.......2005-02-07
An indispensable guidebook with great scope for improvement.......1999-11-25
The greatest strength of this book is that it is the only guidebook to give a substantial account of all parts of the Tibetan plateau, both inside and outside the so-called Tibetan Autonomous Region. For that reason it is, despite its conspicuous faults, indispensable for the traveller to Tibet whose itinerary extends beyond the familiar lands of central Tibet. The book is not to be confused with "Tibet Handbook" by Victor Chan.
"Tibet Handbook with Bhutan" is a guide to all Tibetan regions governed by the People's Republic of China, with additional chapters on Bhutan and the Kathmandu valley of Nepal. It would have been useful to include the Tibetan borderlands in Nepal and north-west India Ä although it is no doubt expedient politically to imply that no part of Tibet lies outside the territory China governs.
At 650 grams, the new edition (paperback) is almost twice the weight of the first, hardback, edition - a curious development for a travel guidebook.
The book includes useful background information about Tibetan religion, iconography and history. The bulk of the book deals with the regions of the Tibetan plateau by devoting a section to each one of the 158 counties into which the People's Republic of China divides it. This approach turns out to be surprisingly intelligible.
There is extensive information about religious places, and buildings and their contents. There is much less information about other matters such as topography, agriculture, educational facilities, military establishments, and political structures. It is as though, in a way, those things belong to a different Tibet.
The book enjoys the benefit of the author's experience as a scholar and tour guide. It also suffers the limitations of that experience, and is often short on practical details for the independent traveller. It is written in a concise style that betrays no trace of personality.
The second edition has been expanded considerably, mainly with valuable information about counties where information in the first edition was inadequate. Unfortunately, the author has not taken the opportunity to check the much more extensive material carried over from the first edition. If he would make time to do that, he would find innumerable internal contradictions within the text and between the text and the often wildly inaccurate small county maps. Almost any numeral, particularly distances, should be treated with suspicion. The relationship between the county population figures and those in the 1996 edition show impossible fluctuations; they go unremarked, but indicate that at least one of the sets of figures is worthless, and perhaps both. The inherent confusion in the existence of both Tibetan and Chinese names for the same places demands a consistency of usage in a guidebook which this one does not quite manage to attain.
An indispensable book, with the scope to become much better.

Book Description
In the mid-nineteenth century, little was known of the west coast and waterways. The ships that sailed those waters did so at a considerable risk, sometimes depending on only a school atlas to navigate and all too often crashing into the rocks. So the U.S. Coast Survey, whose purpose was to map every mile of American shoreline, commissioned George Davidson to chart all of the major points on the coast and all of the waterways in between. In this beautifully illustrated book, Taylor Morrison chronicles the challenges and adventures Davidson and his team faced and the methods they used to accomplish this monumental, and essential, task.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
Archer B. Gilfillan was an anomaly. An Ivy League scholar with a broad knowledge of classical literature and a talent for writing, he nonetheless chose to herd sheep from 1916 to 1934 in a lonely, isolated part of the West. Out of this strange juxtaposition of expertise and experience, Gilfillan produced the classic narrative of American sheep-herding.Customer Reviews:

Bob Flowerdew's Organic Bible: Successful Gardening the Natural Way
Bob Flowerdew Manufacturer: Kyle Cathie Limited ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 1856265951 |
Book Description
The aim of organic gardening is simply to achieve the right balance between ecologically sound and environmentally friendly practice. If we create a healthy soil in which a wide variety of plants can flourish, we also establish a food chain in which predators and prey maintain a natural balance-and do much of the pest control for us. Plants want to grow-the organic gardener's task is to remove obstacles from their path. This means choosing the right plant for the right place; providing the right type of soil, the right temperature, and the right amount of moisture; and protecting those plants that need it in early life or in adverse conditions. In this comprehensive, easy-to-use guide-abundantly illustrated with color photos of his own garden-Bob Flowerdew shows you how to work with nature to make a garden that's both beautiful and bountiful. Among the author's previous books are The Companion Garden and The Complete Fruit Book.

Provincial Taxation in the Ur III State (Cuneiform Monographs, 26)
Tonia M. Sharlach Manufacturer: Brill Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9004135812 |
Book Description
This volume investigates the relationship between the central government and the provinces during the Ur III period (2112-2004 B.C.). Specifically, the book focuses on one system of taxation known as "bala," or "rotation," so called as provinces' payments rotated month by month throughout the year. This work is the first to take an interarchival approach, discussing Sumerian tablets from Umma, Lagash and Puzri-Dagan, and is the first major synthesis of what has long been recognized as a fundamental institution. The book contains six chapters and detailed appendices (including charts, the edition of approximately 150 previously unpublished tablets and bibliographical material).

Spiked Snow.......2003-03-07
I can relate to Kevin because when I first started to mountain bike I did not know what to do. I have not felt or done anything like the characters in the story. I like this book because it is about my favorite sport; mountian biking.
My favorite part of the book is when they get stuck in a man-made avalanche inside a small house. I did not have any least favorite parts in the book. If I could change anything in the book it would be for Kevin to not almost get buried in the avalanche.
I would recommed this book to a person who likes mountain biking. The age range should be 10-13.
It was awsome.......1999-10-18
