Just the Facts about Norway.......2006-05-01
Fodor's latest tour guide to Norway is, like other editions in this series, heavy on facts for planning and light on wow factor. This edition, a compact 200 pages, provides plenty of information for planning a trip to Norway, especially for the traveler who has already made the decision to go.
The guide provides a useful summary of Norway's many attractions, lots of information on traveling to and around Norway, and breakdowns by region of the principal attractions. Oslo gets lots of coverage as the major city, principal point of entry, and home of the best shopping and museum hopping. The guide also provides lots of information about the spectacular west coast of Norway, the fjord country, based on its status as a major tourist destination. Interior Norway gets rather less coverage but can be just as rewarding for the traveler looking for quiet forests and mountains. Each section typically includes suggestions for accomodations and dining. Each section also includes sketch maps that might be used as the basis of a tour itinerary.
Norway has a somewhat limited road network, but compensates with excellent internal air and rail systems. Travelers may wish to consider these options in planning their movement around Norway, a surprisingly large country.
Fodor's Norway does not have any photographs or other illustrations beyond maps; visitors seeking a sense of place and scale will have to consult elsewhere. The level of detail in such a compact guide is also limited. Travelers with particular interests such as hiking are advised to consult more detailed guides on Norway's trail and hut system.
This guide is recommended to the traveler planning a first trip to Norway and needing lots of basic facts with which to plan.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK IF: .......2006-03-28
If you expect any pictures to give you a feel for the place, then don't buy this book. The picture on the cover is the only thing you'll get.
Where I'm coming from: I don't travel to shop, eat, meet the locals or absorb new culture: I go to see beautiful man-made and natural wonders. An hour spent at a sidewalk cafe absorbing the "atmosphere" is an hour that could be spent seeing more of a castle, cathedral, museum, mountain, lake etc.
Perhaps if you already know what you want to see, what's worth seeing in Norway, then the information in the book might be useful. But if you've never been to the place before, BUY THE EYEWITNESS SERIES books, they have pictures and 3D perspective drawings of specific neighborhoods give a nice feel for what one might want to see.

Annie Moore New York City Girl
ASIN: 1842624466 |
Book Description
Fifteen year-old Irish-born Annie Moore was the very first immigrant to land at the now historic handling station at Ellis Island in New York on the day it opened in 1892. Here is her story, told as historical fiction for juvenile readers.
Book Description
In this, the only up-to-date critical work on still life painting in any language, Norman Bryson analyses the origins, history and logic of 'still life', one of the most enduring forms of Western painting. The first essay is devoted to Roman wall-painting while in the second the author surveys a major segment in the history of still life, from seventeenth-century Spanish painting to Cubism. The third essay tackles the controversial field of seventeenth-century Dutch still life. Bryson concludes in the final essay that the persisting tendency to downgrade the genre of still life is profoundly rooted in the historical oppression of women. In Looking at the Overlooked, Norman Bryson is at his most brilliant to date. These superbly written essays will stimulate us to look at the entire tradition of still life with new and critical eyes.
Customer Reviews:
brilliant.......2007-04-11
If you're wavering on your decision to purchase this work, just go for it. I took a seminar from Professor Bryson one semester, and let me tell you, this man simply exists on a whole different intellectual level. He constantly confronts and re-perceives art and artistic theory, pushing your mind to process visual information in radically different ways.
Looking at the Overlooked, The first critical book I have read on Still Life painting.......2005-09-17
There is not much literature available on the subject of still life painting that goes beyond the obvious surface information. This is the first review of the history of still life painting which reexamines the human implications of different still life ideas throughout history. The four essays are in depth explorations of the challenging questions asked by seemingly ordinary subject matter and the formal ways in which artists engage these concepts. I wish I would have known about this book years ago.
range and richness .......2005-08-10
In many american universities there is a sharp division between the classic art historians and the linguistics-inclined post modernists. Bryson's range encompasses both.
A sensitive, intimate book on the virtues of still lifes.......1999-09-05
This small and highly accessible book reflects on the significance of the slighted area of still life painting. It is a gentle and reflective reminder of the significance of domesticity and the interior in painting.
Book Description
Loaded with color photos, tip boxes, and check lists, The Simple Guide to Bird Care & Training provides the tools needed to select the right bird, welcome it into a home, and then keep it happy and healthy. With chapters on feeding, housing, health care, and training, this handbook covers all there is to know about caring for an avian companion. The book also includes helpful tips and expert solutions to the most common situations faced by owners - from problem behaviors, such as feather picking and biting, to training issues, such as wing clipping and talking. Most importantly, the book uses compassion and humor to help owners transform a new pet into a cherished and well-adjusted member of the family.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book!.......2004-09-03
I absolutely love this book. I work with parrots on a full time basis in an all-bird store. This book is right on target for beginnner bird owners. What I like about it is that it is comprehensive. It breaks down the different types of birds and discusses their personality traits, size, life span, talking ability (not a definite in any bird, but always a plus, and every bird is different), whether a bird is ok for an apartment or a house, and of course, everything from health and grooming to training. I have not found a book yet that does as much comparing between the species and makes it easy for beginner birders. A must have for all beginners!!!
Good Basic Info on Bird Selection, Care, and Training.......2003-08-18
This book is an up to date book providing a general overview of bird care and training. This book is good for the beginner who is considering a bird or has just acquired their first bird. It is reasonably priced and packed with lots of information. You'll need to move on to more specialized books about bird care and training after reading this, but this book is an excellent start!
Great advice in an easy to use format........2003-04-09
This is a great book. It has easy to read and understand information on the most popular pet birds. There are 19 species covered individually. It gives step by step advice on how to set up and mantain a happy home for you and your bird. It also contains color photographs on almost every page.

Book Description
It is a great irony that garden books are filled with sunny, colorful photos taken at midday, while the gardeners who tend them are usually away at work. Peter Loewer's The Evening Garden is an exciting revelation of the delights to be found in a garden that is planned and planted for evening enjoyment, from night-bloomers to fragrant orchids and wildflowers. This book runs the gamut from technical considerations, like how the eye sees color at night, to essential discussions of plants with night-time value, whether it be fragrance, bloom, or the ability to attract moths. There are chapters dedicated to night-blooming daylilies, evening primroses and other nocturnal wildflowers, water gardens of the evening, moonlight gardens, and fireflies and glowworms. All are made eminently readable with quotes from past botanical writings, and the elegant text is graced with 160 beautiful line drawings. This is an indispensable book for any gardener who plans to venture out to the garden after sundown - or who just likes to read about it.
Customer Reviews:
Very fine book -.......2005-08-02
This book has excellent information, it just didn't fit my needs. However, the information was excellent, and I am glad I purchased the book. It would have been nice to have color plates of the flowers, since the black and white line drawings were a little inadequate.
The Evening Garden.......2005-07-02
Seller didn't inform me the book had a great deal of highlighting. I purchased it primarily for the illustrations, but was disappointed by the highlighting.
Excellent!!.......2003-09-08
After taking an insect class which had as part of it a night class I decided to set up a night garden. This book is great - it has some neat poems sprinkled in which is an extra bonus. The book starts out with a chapter called "The Beauty ofthe Night" which talks to the moon, colors at night, stars/brightness. The next chapter is an overview of a niht garden - fragrances, pollinators, and plants. Then there is a chapter on orchids, another on bromelaids, another on annuals and perrenials for the night garden, night blooming daylillies, primroses and water gardens. Cactuses are also covered as well as trees and vines. There's also a chapter on fireflies, glow worms and moths. A very complete book - I'm really happy with it.
Fantastic!!.......2000-09-09
No need for many words: if you see that book someplace, buy it!!!!

Amazing, Well-Written Cultural History.......2001-03-17
What an amazing find this book was! The authors artfully unveil the little-known world of drag clubs in the Fourties - and let me tell you it's NOTHING like the drag world today. Full of artists who sang for themselves (no lip-sync here!) and took their art form very seriously, it really opens up your perspective on what it must have been like to be a gay person in that era. You get both a feel for the times and a perspective that makes you appreciate today.
Told as a series of short biographies of people and places of the day, it is very readable, accessible, and educational at the same time.
I highly recommend this book, and hope the authors are working on a sequel that covers the next era in Seattle's rich history!

Enlightenment for the Soul.......2004-06-03
Beloved is a book unlike any other to date. It reads like a beautiful religious inspirational poem with very in depth meaning and insight. It is not a "conversation" with God, but a very pure communication between a child and her Divine Father through beautiful verses. The book is trying to touch all the souls and enlighten them of who they are and where they come from. It reaches each soul with a feeling of understanding and really trying to connect with "the one above all else", who is our creator and most benevolent Father. Celeste's honesty and purity come through in her writings. She is as she says "only a scribe", however, she has done an excellent job of explaining His divine words for the ordinary laymen.
I found the book not only lovely to look at but a very heart wrenching and touching read. This book is a must for all who really want to feel and understand God and his Divinity and what He really wants and feels about his creation.

Old fashioned uplift.......2004-05-13
As a person who has memories of quiet times with thoughts about God from early childhood church experiences, I feel that same sense of uplift and connection to the holy from this book. I later took up an Eastern pathway; but the author does not exclude anyone who is able to feel inspired from gaining her message. Or, rather His message, because as these things come in their own special ways so it has apparently come through the author/scribe. I recommend the book for the reason that it is a quiet uplifting message all throughout its pages. Yes, it is Christian, but the author has a comparative background. Her pathway is Jesus', but she wants everyone to know about a special message that has God reaching out to humanity--once again.
It is a gentle message of God's love and desire to commune with us. I firmly believe that this work could become a classic work of devotion. It could stand well on a shelf of books on mysticism, devotion, spirituality, and metaphysics.
