5 out of 5 stars Just Returned From Chile.......2007-10-01

I just returned from a month of living in Santiago, Chile, learning Spanish, and living with my Footprint guide to Chile. I read a lot of the book before arriving and everything it had said and recommended was right. I was living in Santiago and it gave tons of things to do, stay, eat, and see in the city. I was also traveling on weekend. Things like, skiing in the Andes, visiting Valparaiso and Vina del Mar, Cajon del Maipo, and taking a trip to the island of Chiloe in the south. Everywhere I went I would read the guide book beforehand and I would arrive and walk around and really have a strong grasp of where things were as well as what to do and what to avoid. There are good detailed maps of all the main cities/towns as well as some of the more popular smaller towns too. The descriptions of places like hostels and restaurants are 100% accurate. I was able to look at other guide books in Chile when I would bump into another traveler. Many times, when someone else had little or no information on something, we would look it up in my book and there would be plenty of information on it. I took this book with me every morning I left my apartment in Santiago and everywhere I traveled. If you are thinking about buying this I strongly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars I didn't like the guide.......2007-05-02

I do not recommend this guide, the info its not accurate and not updated. The places recommended in the guide often do not exist (specially hostels and vegeterian restaurants mencioned). Also prices can be really different than those mentioned.
An important detail is that some hostels and pensiones said to be "clean" are definitely not, be aware specially if you are in Puerto Montt.
If you travel off season you may experience difficulties finding travel guides and tours in chiloe. There is only one tourist agent working off season in castro, if you ask you'll get to him, but his agency, he owns an hostel and a simple hotel as well, are not pointed in the guide even though he is the only opcion one can get to visit the chiloe national park during winter-fall months.
About travelling into southern Chile without passing through Argentina the guide offers almost no information about bus schedules and local bus companies or ferries which are more than scarce off season (sometimes there are busses and ferries schedules only once a week. During the summer (dec-jan-feb)its different and won't be an issue.

4 out of 5 stars Just like a "Frommer's" for Chile ..........2006-01-14

This is the detail "travel agenda and planning guide" you want to determine hotel, transportation and other location detail. It is very much similar to a Frommer's Guide.

It is sorely missing color and story. Therfore it is boring to read. That's why I only gave it four stars. But Chile guides are not plentiful. This is designed to be more of a reference guide and it is good at that. Don't expect to get enough info on geography, history, politics and the people of Chile.

The good news!! For the information missing in this guide, you should definitly get the "Insight Guide" "Chile & Ester Island" (Discovery Channel). This book has the color and information to give a Chile novice all they need to know about Chile's geography, history, people and politics. I could not put it down until I read all the way through it.

These two books are the absolut perfect combo for the first-time Chile traveller or Chile novice and really should be sold in a package. In tandem they cannot be beat.
Get these two and you have the perfect travel guide package.

5 out of 5 stars Bar none, the best guide to Chile.......2005-04-26

Definitely the best guide to Chile. More accurate, enthusiastic, and useful than Rough Guides or Lonely (this bar closed 3 years ago) Planet. Janak also runs a darn nice hostel.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide.......2003-04-22

Prior to my trip to Chile last year, I checked available guide books in a local bookstore. I chose Footprint for the content and maps, and also because it had a section about Patagonian Argentina that would be useful. I wasn't disappointed, the guide was most helpful. When talking to another traveller in Chile who had an Italian version of Lonely Planet guide, I could see that some information in the Footprint guide was more accurate. I liked it so much that I'm ordering new Footprint guides for my upcoming trips.

Book Description

From nights dancing the tango in Buenos Aires to gaucho riding in the grasslands of the Pampas to celebrity spotting on the ski slopes of Bariloche, Argentina offers visitors a vast array of entertainment and adventure. Footprint Argentina covers all the basics with current, critical listings of where to eat, stay, and play. Loaded with information on feasts and festivals, food, fashion, fads, and folklore, it details the history, politics, and culture of Argentina - the birthplace of the Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara, stomping ground of Madonna, and source of Evita worship. Redesigned for accessibility and easy navigation, this edition includes a double-page color highlight map, basic Spanish for visitors, a planning guide, and detailed information on Patagonia and the adventure travel scene.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This 2007 / 4th Edition is a great guide for Argentina and an excellent guide for Patagonia. .......2007-02-27

There was a day when Rough Guide and Lonely Planet were the best guides for travelers that sought to leave the tour groups behind and explore on their own. But slowly, year by year, Footprint has improved, and now this 4th edition is one of the best guides for Argentina that you can buy. *Note that this review is for the the 4th edition, other reviews below are probably refering to the 3rd Edition.

I took five travel guides with me to explore Argentina/Patagonia, and I found myself consistently reaching for Footprint first. It is the most current (2006) and the guide consistently listed quality accommodations and good restaurants, some of which were exemplary. The city maps in the guide are excellent. All the restaurants and hotels are well marked on each map. Kudos.

Footprint Argentina's background section (history, religion, culture etc.) is well written, brief, yet informative. There is an abundance of website references throughout the text and a website listing for almost every accommodation = excellent.

I spent five weeks exploring Patagonia and found Footprint to be the best single guide to have. More than 200 pages in this Argentinean guide are devoted to this region, including a section on Chilean Patagonia. If you purchase "Time Out Patagonia" (see my review) you will have the best two guides possible for Patagonia.

On the downside Footprint uses a cumbersome letter system instead of just telling you the price for accommodations (i.e., LL=$200 plus, L=$150-$200, AL=$101-$150, A,B,C,D,E,F etc. -- putting the legend at the back of the book - a serious hassle). It also fails to tell you what is the price range for the restaurants; so at one eatery you could pay $10 for your meal, then have a $35 bill at another. Not good. The descriptions of the restaurants are insipid and verge on being meaningless: "tasty food", "cosy", "very popular", "delicious food". Whereas, other good guides (Rough Guide - also highly recommended - see my review) give you pointers: "best grilled shrimp ever" / "the steaks here are the best in town" etc.

Bottom line: this is a very good guide for Argentina and the best guide for those that are going to Patagonia. Highly recommended

1 out of 5 stars Totally useless!.......2006-05-26

Everything about this book, from phone numbers to accommodation reviews, has been almost laughably wrong. I've never felt compelled to write a review on amazon before, but this book has been so inaccurate I think I should warn people. The only reason anyone should buy this book is to do the exact OPPOSITE of whatever it says. I doubt this author has even been to the places she writes about, that's how consistently wrong this book is. It is impossible to locate a copyright date, and they probably did that on purpose, considering many places have closed and info is obviously outdated. I understand that some places change over time, but I've given this book a chance in 10 different places throughout Argentina and the advice here has failed miserably.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but...........2005-12-25

I returned from Argentina just two weeks ago, and I used this book exclusively. I usually use the "Let's Go" guides when I travel, and I didn't like this one nearly as much. Too many superlatives throughout the book - unfortunately not everything can be amazing or fantastic - so after a while there was really no way to differenciate the truly fantastic (the falls or Perito Moreno Glacier), from the just so so things. And regardless of what the book says, unless you love to eat beef and pork every meal, the food is terrible. Very mediocre pasta and pizzas everywhere, and vegetarians are highly restricted. The food was definitely the lowlight of our trip. If interested in hiking and the outdoors - plan on spending the majority of your time way down south. El Calafate, El Chalten, and Ushuaia are all truly amazing areas. And if you can fit the Falls in, they are definitely worth the trip. The prices in the book were pretty accurate, although things tended to be a bit higher. But it is still quite inexpensive. We thought the book did a poor job of letting you know just how difficult it would be to get to many of the wilderness areas without your own car or hiring an expensive guide. Another thing to remember when planning your trip is that it is much cheaper in the North, and the buses are nicer and more plentiful. Overall, I thought it was a good book, but the authors could have been a bit more honest about the shortcomings of the country.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended -.......2004-12-03

We travelled around Argentina out of season using this guide and the Rough Guide, and found that we turned time and again to the Footprint Guide for reliable and up-to-date information. I broke my ankle in Salta, but thanks to this guide, we were booked into a fantastic hotel, and later spent a few nights luxuriating in a gorgeous and fantastic value for money estancia in Pumamarca, which went some way towards saving the holiday from disaster. If you're thinking of going to Argentina, go now, and take this guide with you!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book.......2004-12-03

We travelled to Argentina recently and used this as our only guide. The information was accurate, well presented and current. My wife particularly enjoyed the writer's excellent and as she herself said, elegant descriptive prose. We had a marvellous time on the strength of some of her recommendations, most particularly the Lake district and Mendoza where we ate enough meat to see us both through to our pensions. Many thanks Ms Dilks!

    5 out of 5 stars Great!!!!.......2004-07-12

I love this! It is perfect for any movie or DVD afficionado, who has so many movies they wanna see or buy, it all needs to be written down. The journal is nicely packaged and very cute, and is divided into different categories.

The "New Releases" section allows space to write which theatrical releases need to be seen, with a space for theater and showtimes and release date. I wasn't too fond of the "Revivals" section, since we don't have many revivals playing nowadays, otherwise it's a nice addition. The "TV/Video" section are for films viewed on television or DVD and The "Film Library" section allows space to write which DVDs you want to purchase, and whether or not it's been aquired.

It's a fun little journal, which definitely comes in handy to write down all the movies to see or buy. Recommended for that and that only.

    2 out of 5 stars BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!.......2004-04-12

This isn't much of a journal. It promises space to write one's own reviews, but offers only a few lines per film. The writers themselves take most of the space showing off their "knowledge" of film and related topics, but their research isn't always reliable.

For instance, after telling us in the Resources section (page numbers are beyond the skills of this publisher) that the Sundance Film Festival is "held in a small, Rocky Mountain town in Utah," the list on the following page states that the Sundance Film Festival is held in "Sundance, Colorado." Actually the festival is held in Park City, Utah with some films also shown in nearby Salt Lake City. This correct information is easily available in any of the books about the Sundance Film Festival recommended by these writers. Checking facts is essential for credibility.

I don't think I'll rely on the information this book supplies about Cannes or Venice, or maybe anything else. A blank notebook would provide better space for keeping a film record than this chatty guide to everything except one's own perception, interpretation and evaluation of the work of countless film artists of our era. A helpful journal would deftly and briefly guide the film enthusiast to develop critical skills. However, these writers seem only to promote themselves.

        Book Description

Frank Lloyd Wright's mammoth contribution to architecture is universally acknowledged, but his graphic work has been largely overlooked in the existing literature about this seminal architect. His designs for typography, books, posters, murals, and magazines have remained relatively obscure, even though they are key components of his oeuvre.

Penny Fowler has thoroughly investigated the artist's innovative graphic work and placed it within the context of various aesthetic movements, from Arts and Crafts to Bauhaus and De Stijl. Wright's publications - including The House Beautiful and An Autobiography - his delineations for the Wasmuth Portfolio, and his mural designs for Midway Gardens and the Imperial Hotel are explored, and one chapter is devoted to the festive covers Wright created for Liberty magazine. (Wright's designs were considered far too radical from the current trends, so Liberty turned them down.)

Now this important part of the artist's work has been succinctly reviewed and amply illustrated. The ten chapters - carefully annotated with endnotes - explore Wright's foray into the world of graphic design, including book design; his influence by international sources; and his visits to Japan and Europe. Exhibitions and publications are included in the last chapter. Frank Lloyd Wright: Graphic Artist suggests that the man's genius simply knew no bounds.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For connoisseurs of Wright's artwork.......2002-08-11

Frank Lloyd Wright: Graphic Artist is an informative and memorable portrayal of Frank Lloyd Wright, the innovations in graphics and the aesthetics of his interior design work that arose out of his pioneering architectural accomplishments. Fine color illustrations and reproductions of his conceptual drawings ornament and enhance this solid, detail-filled, meticulous and "reader friendly" study. Frank Lloyd Wright: Graphic Artist is a welcome contribution to the growing library of American Architectural Studies, and is especially recommended reading for connoisseurs of Wright's artwork created in conjunction with his ground breaking architectural accomplishments.

        5 out of 5 stars A fabulous book........2006-11-24

In this fascinating book, celebrated author Judith Sumner rescues from the pages of history the practical experience and botanical wisdom of generations of Americans. Crossing the disciplines of history, ethnobotany, and horticulture--and with a flair for the colorful anecdote--Sumner underlines a part of the American story often ignored or forgotten: how European settlers and their descendents made use of the "strange" new plants they found, as well as the select varieties of foods and medicines they brought with them from other continents. From "turkie wheat" (corn) to "tuckahoe" (a Native American source of starch), Sumner describes the transition from wonderment to daily use, as homesteads were built upon and prospered from the plants of the New World.

Virtually no aspect of "practical" botany is ignored in these pages, from dyestuffs to household herbs and from timber harvests to holly wreaths. It is a remarkable story of the interdependence of plants and the American home. Historians, herbalists, home gardeners, and ethnobotanists will find American Household Botany a treasure trove of original research and insight.

2 out of 5 stars Not sure about this.......2006-11-21

This is a book on a fascinating topic, but the book does not really bring the topic to life. The illustrations are quite limited, and certainly are not the strong point of the book: the book relies on its text. The text does cover a lot of ground, touching on many topics, but explains nothing in any depth.

Skimming through the book I notice things which hit me unpleasantly, although it would be an overstatement to say I am noticing serious errors. Maybe somebody will like this style of writing? I am unsure.

The famously taciturn South African president reveals much of himself in Long Walk to Freedom. A good deal of this autobiography was written secretly while Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years on Robben Island by South Africa's apartheid regime. Among the book's interesting revelations is Mandela's ambivalence toward his lifetime of devotion to public works. It cost him two marriages and kept him distant from a family life he might otherwise have cherished. Long Walk to Freedom also discloses a strong and generous spirit that refused to be broken under the most trying circumstances--a spirit in which just about everybody can find something to admire.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating book that should be read by everyone.......2007-07-03

It is not very often that I set to read non-fiction. This book, however, was originally recommended to me by a Rwanda refugee and so I made an exception. What a good decision that was.
Although I was familiar with Mandela's life and South Africa's struggle against the apartheid regime, this book provided me with much more profound understanding of the struggle and the historical events leading to the eventual overthrow of the racist regime. This book, however, is much more than an account of a dark time period in the history of humanity. Above all, this book is an amazing portrayal of a life of a man, an exceptional man who is much too human. We are taken through time, from Mandela's childhood to his presidency, blessed with a unique view of a man marked to die in a secluded prison. His struggle to become a "first-class" citizen and the brutal force with which the then government crushes the hopes of the young men and women is only but a part of the story. Most importantly, we are allowed a unique window into Mandela's psyche and his philosophy, for this book, to me, is mostly about human spirit, its strengths and its weaknesses. Mandela's contemplations regarding the social order, humanity, law, schools and his personal approaches are fascinating and profound. He delves into the depths of human behaviour in a fluid, understandable way; his words flow on the pages from one event onto the next, while maintaining a uniform message. Although he did engage in securing financing for a possible armed conflict, his hopes and faith reside in a non-violent solution. Mandela's life is, after all, one giant wound on the face of mankind. Neglected and abandoned by the superpowers of the world, the people of South Africa never lost hope and Mandela is a fascinating and shining example of a man, stripped of everything, who, no matter what life threw in his way, maintained his dignity and his sight not only on the problems, but also on the solutions. An amazing read I am happy to recommend. This book should be read by everyone.

5 out of 5 stars The story behind legends.......2007-06-15

I had always heard that Nelson Mandela was a living legend, yet I knew so little about him. This book confirmed the legend.

The book takes you through the journey of his life. From his upbringing, to his entering the political life, his 27 years in prison and finally his return from prison to lead the nation. It is very interesting to read his rationale and thought process behind every decision, personal or political. He was a strong-willed man with an exceptionally strong sense of what is right and wrong. He spent 27 years in jail without ever applying for an appeal and rejecting every offer of release. He never lost his resolve even in the most trying of times. He believed that equality and freedom are every human's birthright and he was willing to die for the freedom of his people. The book has countless lessons not only for political leaders who lead nations but for common people for their day to day lives.

A must read for everybody. I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela.......2007-05-07

An excellent autobio by one of the few truly great men of the 20th century. Details his boyhood, early adulthood, and 27 (?) years in prison as a political prisoner of the apartheid government of South
Africa, followed by release and eventual President of the country. The amazing part is how, as President, he avoided revenge and eventually brought re conciliation to the races.

          5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring.......2007-04-10

There are all kinds of inspiring biographies and autobiographies. This one is unique. Most biographies lean toward the spiritual and base their inspiration on some divine energy or God. This is the most grounded in life biography that you can read. Not much about God, just about his own passion for equal rights. Even mindedness, even in the face of incredible pain.

          5 out of 5 stars Polit thriller.......2007-01-17

Despite due respect for a great leader, I did not really expect to like this autobiography very much. Mandela is no great speaker, his TV presence is rather flat, his English apparently not masterful. The life story in summary does not seem to have that much interest either, considering the long jail time and the fact that most of the "hot action" of the anti-apartheid movement happened while he was on Robben Island.
All wrong. The writing is surprisingly fluent, the story telling surprisingly efficient and free of waste as well as redundancies. Also free of sentimentality and exaggerated pathos.
If there is anything that I wished to be more detailed it is the period of his childhood and youth. This period is described in a rather remote way and with a sometimes irritating lack of explanation or reflection. I realized that may have happened due to the conditions under which the book was written: in jail. Also I could imagine that editors suggested some shortening: after all the book is still quite hefty.
If there is one negative comment that I have to make, it refers to NM's insistence that all trouble between black groups, such as the Inkatha violence problems, or tribal conflicts, have been caused by the perfidy of the whites. As much as I can understand the psychology behind this wishful thinking, I do not think it is a realistic approach.
Despite this comment and despite the book's size, it is never boring. Highly recommendable.

3 out of 5 stars Prison account is interesting but rest is dull.......2007-01-01

I only found half the book interesting, the half where he talks about life in prison. The rest is just too much factual information that one can get by reading a history book or reading wikipedia. There is also a lot of political mumbo jumbo that tries to simplify a very complex political problem.

One really gains little insight into Mandela the human being . If you want to learn about Mandela the politician then this book is for you. I also did not like the narration by Glover. It was difficult to understand his accent and he spoke in a very unusual manner. I have a collection of over a hundred audio books, mostly non-fiction and this narration ranks among the least 'listenable'.

4 out of 5 stars Audio - Long Walk to Freedom.......2005-08-27

I had to read the book for a class so I purchased the audio to go along with it to help speed things up. The audio follows the book's order, but skips over sections here and there. As a stand alone audio, it flows just nicely and was very enlightening.

          5 out of 5 stars Interesting narrative.......2005-04-08

Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and the first democratically elected president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela began his autobiography during the course of his 27 years in prison. This audio offers a biography of Mandela's life from his birth in 1918 to his inauguration as president of South Africa in 1994. A large part of the audio is a description of his 27 years in prison, an account that could stand alone as a prison narrative. Long Walk to Freedom also explores Mandela's strong spirit that refused to be broken under very difficult circumstances. It ends with a call for everyone to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. From AudioColumn.com

4 out of 5 stars Good Book - But be open minded.......2005-06-22

INTRO: This is the first book of this size that I have read about S. Africa. Having many relatives from S. Africa , I've heard the white side of the story about post-apartheid atrocities and unfairness, but this is the first history I've read of the history before 1994. This book really is fascinating in seeing the black perspective of the problem as well as chronologically laying out the evolution of the struggle.

BODY: An important thing to keep in mind is that this book is written by Nelson Mandela himself who is not a partial bystander. Many times in fact, the book reads like a training manual for aspiring revolutionaries. While the history of the book is not in question, you need to understand that he paints them in a very specific light. At the end of the book, you hear nothing about any killings on behalf of the ANC only about the killings which were done to them. Another example of the political agenda of this book is near the beginning when Nelson Mandela makes the statement that the tribal politics that existed before the white man was "democracy in it's purest form".

CONCLUSION: You should enjoy this book and admire Nelson Mandela for his lifetime of sacrifice and devotion to racial equality. However, don't place all your eggs in one basket and realize that there is more to the story than that of the radical revolutionary Mandela's. This book has inspired me to look further into S. Africa's present and past history.
