The Wanderings of an Elephant Hunter.......2007-05-21
This is an excellent narration by the premiere elephant hunter of the early 20th Century. This extraordinary man presents adventures as simple matters of fact, as calmly as if he were recounting a normal day's work in some office. There is droll, and I believe "unintended" humor throughout the book. He gives a glimpse into the everyday life and perils of a short-lived profession that became a staple of early Hollywood adventure movies. Karamojo Bell was a master hunter who believed that the size of the bullet was not nearly as important as the placement of the shot. He hunted elephants with calibers that would only seem suitable for deer in today's hunting circles.
A CLASSIC AFRICAN HUNTING BOOK by W.D.M. BELL.......2006-03-22
Walter Dalrymple Maitland (W.D.M.) Bell(1880-1951) roamed Africa for a quarter of a century between 1897 and 1922. His main interest there was to collect ivory, and it was much easier back then, as safaris and safari outfitters were uncommon. The elephants and other African animals had no cause to fear men, and shots from the rifles were rare except those made by slave raiders. The best part was that there were plenty of elephants with tusk weighing 100 lbs or more on each side. Bell took full advantage of the situation.
Armed with low calibre rifles, he ventured into the elephant country on foot, and knowing the vital spots of the elephants, he drove the bullets right into their brain, heart or lungs causing instant death to the animals. The bullets were cheap, perhaps a box of 20 for a shilling. But the ivory collected from one elephant brought a luxury life, and Bell collected virtually tons of ivory during his wanderings in Africa, especially an area known as Karamojo (see Bell's 2nd book 'Karamojo Bell' published in 1949)
According to a biographer, Bell was 'arguably the greatest ivory hunter: Certainly the last'. Wanderings of an Elephant Hunter was Bell's first book, originally published by Macmillan in 1923. It contained several sketches and paintings prepared by Bell 'on the spot'. This reprint by Safari Press also reproduced all the illustrations and art works from the original edition, and to me it is much superior in quality than the ones published by Neville Spearman, London.

favorite italy travel guide.......2006-08-23
my copy is coffee-stained and dog-eared. sure I have the blue guide, the michelin guide, and others (including city secrets Rome), but this book is the star - it's not trying to give you everything, but rather, a selected group of nuggets to experience and enjoy. with good fortune and travel companions over the past few years, I've hit all the places in this book, and if fate smiles on me, perhaps I will get to do them all again.
Excellent Companion for ideas and information.......2006-03-27
I've been to Italy 4 times now and used this book extensively each time. My most recent trip took me to Puglia, Abruzzo and Campagnia which is scantily covered in City Secrets, but the places the book does highlight are truly magical. It does lead one off of the Autostradas and onto incredible country-roads, and out-of-the way corners and villages. This book works great for those driving the country in companion with a good Italy map and lots of time.
Hidden treasures.......2006-02-25
"Florence, Venice & the Towns of Italy" is wonderful companion! Having spent several years in Italy painting and teaching, from Rome to Venice.... via Florence and Urbino... I find the book full of secrets to be be uncovered and treasures to be explored.
Everything except Florence.......2005-12-26
My family used this guide extensively while travelling in northern Italy this past summer. We found it particularly helpful in Bologna, Venice and the Portofino region. Marcella Hazan, the cookbook author, was a major contributor to the Venice section; if you want a great meal off of the beaten path in Venice, she won't lead you wrong.
I've used the NYC City Secrets guide for years so bought this before our trip. Given the large geographic area and many regions that are covered, it isn't surprising that it lacks the comprehensiveness of the NYC and Rome City Secrets guides. Although we didn't use the guide in Florence, I can see why many reviewers found it lacking for that great city. Although smaller than Rome, Florence deserves a City Secrets book of it's own.
disappointment.......2002-06-26
I should have heeded the critique of one of your readers. The complaint was "after Rome the series disappoints".
However, I so loved the Rome book, carrying it about Rome, having people comment on the book when they saw me checking maps or sights, finding kindred spirits who also had the book and so on. It was truly my favorite travel guide/book of Rome.
So, ignoring advice, I ordered the Florence edition, realizing that Florence was just a part of the book...but I would never have dreamt it would be THAT small of a part.
True, Florence is much smaller than Rome, but the city is filled with so much beauty, art and architecture that surely a book dedicated to it's "secrets" would have been worth the effort.

What an Amazing Book!.......2003-04-24
"NYC Pet Project" is a phenomenal book, published by a great company. The fact that 25% of the proceeds of all sales of this book benefits NYC Pet Shelters with "no-kill" policies is awesome! Combine that with touching letters to pets from their "mommies and daddies", and beautiful photography and you've got an all-around winner!

The book covers such an amazing range of people -- from celebrities to everyday families to the homeless guys with their pet rat -- their letter is particularly touching... Amazongly informative resource jam-packed w/ critical info.......2004-12-29
This book focussing on a period of time which the authors state is known at America's First Great Depression, is one of the most well-constructed and well-thought out numismatic books I own. It has loads of great photos (1000) accompanied by important information (relative rarity, size, metal, production year, 2000-01 auction results where applicable, and fascinating commentary that helps to identify or place the token in the genre). According to the authors in their rather opaque and fuzzy introduction, these Hard Times Tokens took the place of circulating change because of a shortage resulting from the peculiar Jacksonian economic politics of the time (including the fight over a Federal banking system). Hence their artwork and slogans often trenchantly reflected the contemporary politics prevailing (either in the form of satire or pure political sentiment). In recognition of this, the authors dedicate an entire section of this book to the Satirical Hard Times Token genre, in addition to cataloguing the token issues along individual State lines. Additionally, there are sections concerning Hard Times related Ephemera/Paraphernalia/Notes, so-called 'Store Cards,' and even Slave Tags. The appendices contain information on the ever-expanding numbering system; an examination of the methodology used for identifying coin states and iterations; discussions on token designers and producers; and wonderful photographic blow-ups as examples. As I said, this reference is jam packed with essential information. As such, I highly recommend this book to seasoned collector and novice alike. It rates 4 stars only because, for the price, it should be hardbound. A new stand alone edition of this text has been released approximately every 5 years so this 9th Edition should remain current until the next prospective update in the year 2006/7.

Book Description
This work proposes a reconstruction of the thought world underlying the Holiness Code (Leviticus 17-26). It focuses on the notions of people and land, which are central to the way the law is presented in this corpus. Important themes treated include the sons of Israel, the resident alien, the call to holiness, the camp in the desert and the land as the property of the Lord. The conceptual universe of the Holiness Code is entirely dominated by the notion of the presence of the Lord in his sanctuary, in the midst of his people. It is this presence which requires the Israelites to observe holiness and confers upon the land its particular status. The priestly conception of the relationship between God, people and land finds interesting parallels in the ideology of holy places evidenced in writings from the Ancient Near East.

it is a good book and for its size, 30 something pages of actual content, it is very enlightening and contains surprising amount of information in its small size. it is a must read for any and all Gandhi followers, critics, or anyone looking for information about his non-violent ways.
Insightful and Enlightening.......2005-07-23
This is a short but powerful story that clears the air of many common misconceptions surrounding Mahatma Gandhi and Satyagraha. Even if you have done some prior study as I have about Gandhi, this book will still clarify many major areas of his work and give some insight into his own actions and works which seemingly run counter to his own professions of ideology. The mysteries are revealed in this jewel of a book.

excellent developmental composition text.......2005-10-27
This is the best developmental composition textbook I've seen or used. It opens with chapters exploring each step of the writing process, including exercises for students to do on their own or in class. Next are several chapters covering different genres of essay-writing. Each chapter includes three examples of the genre, one each from school, work, and everyday life contexts. 9 or 10 genres are included (including several types of arguement) so that the instructor can pick and choose which ones to focus on. Another section briefly introduces the research process. The final section, which takes up half of the book, covers grammar topics. It's organized according to frequency and severity of error, beginning with "The four most serious errors," (fragments, run-one, subject-verb agreement, and other verb problems). Each chapter includes a real-life example showing why it's important, in the real world, to understand these grammar concepts. Everything is explained in clear, simple language, with as little specialized terminology as possible. This is a terrific textbook, particularly for a community-college developmental writing class.
