Book Description

Called "perhaps the finest artist Montana has produced since Charlie Russell," sheepman Bill Stockton of Grass Range has written a wise, humorous, and sometimes shocking book about-in Stockton's words-"the problems of being a sheep and a few of the problems of the people who care for them." But, as one critic has written, "this book will do more than amuse you or give you moments of enjoyment or teach you about sheep. It will teach you something about yourself." Illustrated throughout with Stockton's masterful drawings, Today I Baled Some Hay to Feed the Sheep the Coyotes Eat is a classic of Montana literature.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Terse and Compelling.......2001-02-06

It seems that this title (oh, so appropriate!) is almost as long as the text of this pensive, perceptive book. Stockton condenses experiences gained through living in close association with the land, livestock, predators, and economic pressures into this extremely readable and informative book. I am recommending it to my family and friends who just can't understand what I'm doing in this very different land.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to add some humor to your day........1999-08-03

Great book to add some humor to your day especially if you are a farmer or rancher. Might even help you appreciate your food if you are not a farmer or rancher.

3 out of 5 stars Some useful information, but severely lacking in many areas.......2006-05-29

I bought this book after accepting a job in London in 2005. After living in London for several months, I can now reflect on my relocation experience and say that this book only provided me with limited guidance.

This book attempts to provide a grand overview on the challenges that expatriates will face when they relocate to London. The book does present a broad overview of the many things expatriates need to do when relocating to London. For example, it does thoroughly explain the work permit and visa process, and it gives plenty of information on setting up utilities in a new home. It also provides some warnings about situations unique to London, such as the viscious, unregulated real estate market, and it provides some tourism information as well.

Additionally, the book provides multiple comparisons of the London boroughs, and the first section of the book provides summary information on each one. However, the summaries are frequently too short to provide a good overview of some of the more diverse boroughs, and some of the criticisms are overly harsh (as they were for Hammersmith and Fulham).

The book has a few major faults. The greatest major fault is that it fails to provide vital information needed for relocation. It does not explain how to solve the permanent housing / bank account / job paradox (where, to acquire one of these things, an individual must already have the other two). This alone significantly weakens the book. However, the book also does not provide information on other things as well. For example, it explains nothing about acquiring a credit card or building up a credit rating in the United Kingdom (which can be frustratingly difficult for a U.S. citizen). It provided some information on dentists, but it did not explain how to sign up with a dentist. It also does not explain U.K. taxes, which are very different from U.S. taxes. While this book does provide information on shopping, the shopping information is oriented towards tourists with high incomes, not residents with low or mid-level incomes.

Aside from the lack of information on important topics in this book, I also dislike it for already being out-of-date (or unfairly biased), even though it was published in 2004. Some of the criticisms of some boroughs are already out-of-date, possibly biased by older impressions from the last century. Many websites suggested by the book either have not been updated for months or are not functional. Also, the transportation information is woefully obsolete, as the Underground in particular has changed (and improved) significantly since the book's publication. I can only imagine that many sections of the book that I have not examined closely also provide dated information.

In conclusion, I would only recommend this book as a supplement to London relocation information rather than as a prime source of information. It simply fails to answer many crucial questions (especially questions about the residence/banking/job paradox), and too much of the information either seems biased or obsolete.

          Book Description

As the leader of one of the most progressive religious sects to emerge from England, William Penn envisioned Pennsylvania as an example of how a God-inspired society could succeed in the wilderness of North America.

However, once in the New World, Quakers pursued both wealth and power, proving that even the most devout could not resist the temptations of the New World. Despite this moral struggle, Pennsylvania , succeeded beyond anyone’s imagination. By Penn’s death in 1718, Pennsylvania was well on its way to becoming the most commercially successful colonial enterprise in English history.

This new addition to the Library of American Biography Series vividly follows Penn from his time in England, the son of a revered war hero, to his controversial conversion to the Quaker faith, to the realization of his dream: the holy experiment, Pennsylvania.

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing and very all-encompassing.......2007-09-17

The biography, William Penn and the Quaker Legacy by John A. Moretta recounts the life of well-known pacifist, Quaker, and creator of Pennsylvania, William Penn. Penn impacted both American and English society by being an outspoken proponent of religious freedom and for reflecting his Quaker ideals in his political decisions. Moretta's biography takes one on a journey through Penn's turbulent political, spiritual, and emotional life.
William Penn was born in 1644, the son of a wealthy English sea captain, and lived a lonely childhood in a home with a father who was rarely present. He was put into both classical and practical schooling, however his true interest was intense reading of the Bible and pondering the Quaker messages of George Fox. As a young boy Penn became enraptured by Quaker practices and much to his father's chagrin, at age 23, he became a devoted follower. While father and son rarely understood each other, the relations his father's status allowed him to develop, like his friendship with King Charles and his brother James, would be how Penn was able to succeed throughout his life.
Penn created a stir in England and Ireland by preaching, debating, and, after being imprisoned, writing pamphlets extolling and validating the Quaker tradition. Some of his main arguments were that one should always live and dress in a plain way, people were naturally good, and that Jesus preached the brotherhood of man, meaning no wars or arms. Penn's family status, money, and his cunning use of words managed to get him out of jail the many times that he was imprisoned by the angry puritans.
As a young man Penn realized Quakers would never be free to worship in England and became fully dedicated to the development of a safe haven for Quakers and all other religious people in the New World. In 1676 Penn began the intense planning and negotiations for the colony which would meet many obstacles in the following decades. The colony was to be built on the idea that all men and women could own land and worship their own religion. While most of Penn's plans did not work out, one of the biggest things he accomplished was a peaceable relation with the Native Americans. Political disputes, personal debt, and constant pressure from the Crown and surrounding colonies kept William and Pennsylvania in a constant state of turmoil, having Pennsylvania's economic prosperity being one of the few things keeping the experiment alive. By 1700 Pennsylvania had become a state of 15,000 people, largely in part to internal emigration by people from other states wanting to worship freely and escape militia duty. Penn died in 1718 at the age of 73 having had two wives, numerous children, and many trials that he overcame using his prestige, support from the Friends, and his intelligence. He left the right to govern Pennsylvania, a state where people of different religions coexisted, with the Crown and gave the land to twelve people in American and England, including his wife.
This book was full of historical detail regarding Penn's life and gave tremendous insight in to William Penn as a person rather than just what he accomplished. Bringing in Penn's attitudes to issues allowed the book to read smoothly and allowed the reader to understand Penn on a deeper level. I particularly enjoyed how Moretta would tie a lot of events back to Penn's relationships with people important to him; his father, mother, wife, children. This put in perspective that Penn was still a human being and not just a machine who was constantly working to accomplish his next great thing. However, occasionally it would quickly skip over key historical events, requiring one to do further research into the time that Penn was living. Also, perhaps to make the book a smooth read, I frequently found myself wondering the date in which something had occurred. Oftentimes I was confused as to whether it was that in one particular year a tremendous number of events occurred or if that the writer was presenting information that spanned over a number of years. Even when I looked back to pages I had already read, this never became clear to me.
In my opinion the book made the key historical developments in Penn's life unclear because it gave a very similar amount of attention to things that seemed to be of varying importance. In that sense I wish the book had been more succinct in clearly elaborating or stating that certain events had a particularly large impact on history or Penn's life. Also, because there was so much detail about trivial events, I found the book could be repetitive and felt that the information could have been condensed.
Moretta's book left me with a deep respect for Penn and appreciation for the fact that he had been a far from perfect person but had still done tremendous good in his life. I was confused regarding certain historical developments that had been glossed over in the book (The Glorious Revolution, the Great Fire of London, the reign of William and Mary) and was curious to research more. In regards to Penn's development of the state of Pennsylvania, I did find myself wondering how much of his endeavor was a desire for religious freedom and how much was a desire to fulfill his need to wander and quest for economic prosperity. William Penn lived a determined life full of a quest for more and attaining a deeper understanding of these has made me have a strong appreciation for his strength to persevere through the tremendous opposition he met along the way.

          4 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Book.......2007-04-21

I am very pleased to find a book on this topic. Although his writing sometimes seems a little more aimed at college/ history students than the general public, John Moretta does a good job of drawing a full, yet succinct, picture of the man and his times. The content and the topic make this book a very worthwhile purchase.
Besides being a valuable lesson on a significant part of our nation's history, there is much to learn from reflection on Penn's life. His journey from being a child of privilege, rejecting that heritage, embracing egalitarianism and eventually returning to a preference for privilege is a good representation of the way many people travel a full circle in their lives. His desire to both profit personally while at the same time helping others with the founding of a colony ended up benefiting others but not himself. The conflict of idealism and financial pragmatism is a dilemna countless individuals with an altruistic bent must confront as well. And there are many other valuable reflections as well.
For more information on the founding of the Quaker movement, see "First Among Friends: George Fox and the Creation of Quakerism" by H. Larry Ingle.

                      5 out of 5 stars My favorite..........2004-10-04

My wife and I are building a new home on 2+ acres. Our current yard is sort of a four seasons approach, mostly by accident though.

So I purchased a dozen or so books here at amazon to plan the new yard. This one is definitely the best. The approach and suggestions are super. I can really see us doing most of our yard using these suggestions. Thank you Susan! Bob.

                      5 out of 5 stars A truly helpful reference.......2002-09-10

This book is arranged seasonally; each season has its own chapter. Within each of these chapters are various charts suggesting trees, shrubs, perennials, etc. that offer interesting features during that season. Some of the chapters break it down further: for instance, the "Spring" chapter has different charts for early spring, mid-spring and late spring.

Near the beginning of the book is a wonderful section on how to put together a "planting pyramid" for four-season interest. (Hint: You don't start with annuals or even perennials, as so many beginning gardeners do.) Additional design principles and suggestions are found after the "season" chapters.

Finally, the book closes with a limited "encyclopedia" of four-season plants which includes some suggested cultivars, cultural details for the plants, what seasons the plant holds particular interest, etc. This section is divided into deciduous trees, evergreen trees, deciduous shrubs, evergreen shrubs, perennials, etc.

In all, even if you don't have time to read all of the text, which is a pleasure in and of itself...this author is a good writer...there is still a wealth of helpful information to be found in this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Approach to Landscaping.......1999-06-18

This book has a great approach to landscaping your property. Susan Roth shows how to make the most of your space by creating mixed borders--mixing trees, shrubs, perennials ans bulbs for year-round color and beauty. The idea is to start with a garden's "bones," to create the necessary structure that will make all seasons beautiful. Her plant selection is very good--only plants that provide more than one season make her list. For example a shrub that flowers in the summer, has good fall color, and interesting branches or berries in winter. I have many garden books, but I like Roth's approach and already the view from my kitchen window makes me feel good just to look at it.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide for beginners........1999-04-16

I'm a first time gardener and Susan's book has inspired me to use many of her ideas in my landscape. The book is very informative and the illustrations are great. I recommend the book to all who seek a colorful year in their garden.

                      5 out of 5 stars inspirational.......1998-10-26

This book is not only filled with great information, it is also a pleasure to read. The Four Season Landscape changed my whole approach to gardening.

Ellen and William Craft were a young (mid-20's) slave couple who made a daring escape to freedom. Light-skinned Ellen cut her hair short and dressed in the suit and tophat of a white planter. Since she was illiterate, her husband William made a sling for her arm, so she had an excuse not to sign hotel registers. And since she had a womanly voice, the couple devised a poultice tied around her jaw indicating she had a bad toothache and could not speak. William played the role of his white massa's slave. And the couple traveled by train, steamship, and wagon to their destination in the north. They soon became popular lecturers in the United States and Europe. This is a remarkable story of daring and bravery and should be read by everyone. Anyone who wants to introduce their children to good historical fiction should get them The Journal of Darien Duff, an Emancipated Slave, The Diary of a Slave Girl, Ruby Jo, and The Journal of Leroy Jones, a Fugitive Slave.

I read this for a college history survey course before it was mistakenly announced that the book was out of print. The book was dropped from the syllabus, but I am glad I read it anyway.

The first and shortest part of the book is William Craft's powerful account of how he and his wife Ellen executed a daring escape from servitude in Georgia. Their plan was remarkable in its ingenuity: The almost white Ellen, outfitted with a master's clothes and a poultice on her face to prevent incriminating speech with strangers, and her husband William, disguised as a servant, escaped to freedom in the north. Travelling by rail, the pair exultantly crossed over into Canada and from thence headed for England.

The second part of the book is a third person summary of the couple's travels after their ambitious escape. It follows them from Georgia through the slave and free states, in which they were well received and protected (especially in Boston), up to Halifax and across the water to England. I found the final two thirds of the book the most enjoyable, as it treated of foreign travel, in which I have a keen interest. Both portions of the book are beautifully written and often gripping. I hope a few of my classmates read this before that announcement. This book is both pleasurable to read and historically vital.

5 out of 5 stars The Freedom you will get when you read this book........2000-10-31

This book is a captivating account of the injustices of slavery and a amazing story of two fugitives running for there freedom. This book is a great story that should be taught in schools and should not be ignored in American History classes. It opened my mind to the horrors slavery actually caused. It represents a part of our history that should never be repeated. 5 plus stars.

While taking an African American literature course in college I was introduced to this novella written by William Craft. It is a must-read for American and African American history classes. The novella is a quick and easy read, with the capacity for great discussion and in-depth analysis. Humor, suspense, mystery and action is all provided in this wonderful tale of escape and hypocrisey.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for American history students.......1999-11-24

Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom is a must read for all American history students and should be required reading at least at the high school level. This book gives the reader a first-person view of that "Peculiar Instition" known as slavery and to what lengths one will go to achieve personal freedom. This book will change your view of slavery forever.
